Most likely plug and play... only thing that worries me is I have read about some performance issues, but I also read there has been a fix in the firmware for this so make sure you flash the new firmware on it once you receive it.

Ok, I just completed the screen replacement with the LTN156HL01-102 (pics to be uploaded soon) and all I can say is WOW what a difference! It's so much more colorful - even the dark gray that I chose as my Windows color now looks like an actual deliberate warm gray rather than just a black with poor contrast and light bleed! Viewing angles aren't even a consideration now - while it does get a bit darker if I tilt the screen towards me, the colors still stay the same, with no inversion or fade. No dead pixels, thankfully, even though the board did have a few signs of being used (adhesive residue and a bent corner of the eDP socket/connector). I also didn't have any of the "burn-in" or warm-up time reported by others who've installed the LTN156HL01. There's a very small amount of light bleed at the corners, but I think that's due to bezel pressure. I'll have to see if there's anything I can do about that, but it's extremely minor and not noticeable during normal use, only when I view an extremely dark picture fullscreen.
No word on gaming performance yet - I'm still trying to figure out the Optimus settings and EA's Origin client. Crysis keeps running with the Intel HD rather than the 970M, and thus forces everything to medium settings.
A few other observations:
1. The keys on the keyboard are delightfully springy, with a solid click feel, not too much force required, not mushy at all. The keyboard itself is rock solid, no flex unless I'm really trying to push down hard on it.
2. The network performance seems quite slow. I'm not sure if that's the laptop, my router, or my service - but as it's Verizon FIOS 50/50, and no other computers seem to have the problem, I'm leaning towards it being this laptop. I'll look into that more tomorrow.
3. Fingerprints galore! I'm a greasy individual anyway, unfortunately, but even so, fingerprints show up all over this thing, even on the keyboard.
So far, though, I do like it.
Edit: Pictures!
First, my test image, downloaded from the internet because I can't get Optimus working.
The default TN screen, AUO B156HTN03.6:
And the replacement PLS screen, Samsung LTN156HL01-102:
Pics were taken with a crappy Canon Powershot SX200IS on Manual settings: 1/80 sec exposure, F4.0, ISO 1600, autofocus, no flash. Oddly enough, the TN didn't look quite that bright, nor did the PLS look that dark to my eyes. The TN was definitely more washed out and faded, while the PLS is definitely more saturated. All pics were taken at 100% screen brightness. I've since turned it down to about 40% and it is quite comfortable and looks very good.Last edited: Nov 29, 2014HTWingNut, Splintah, flamy and 1 other person like this. -

I'd HIGHLY recommend to anyone considering the NP8651 - upgrade to an IPS screen, even if it's not the LTN156HL01. It's well worth it, even if your budget is tight.
Edit: Just played a bit of Far Cry 1 on maxed out settings, and it looks nice, but more importantly, I didn't notice any ghosting issues, suggesting that the 16ms response time is just fine for gaming.
Edit 2: It just occurred to me that the fan that's on, and the source of the current mild heat that I'm experiencing, is the CPU fan - the 970m fans are still ice cold. Far Cry must have been running on the Intel HD, not the 970m. It's still cooler than my old M4400 would have been, but still... I need to figure out how to get that 970m running!Last edited: Nov 30, 2014 -

I'm still curious if anyone has any info on the new 30x50mm mSATA version of the 1TB Evo 840. It's on-sale and only $90 more, a consideration for anyone with an older system with a 30x50mm mSATA slot.
I'm well past the price match dates for either Amazon (who only does for TVs and Cell Phones within 14 days) and TigerDirect (my purchase was in-store, as I tested the unit beforehand, and sometimes they match in-store).
EDIT: Amazon has ropped the price to $479 as well. I'm going to see if they'll credit me the difference, since I bought one unit from them. I just noticed I'm still within the 30 day period for a return, and even with shipping/restocking, it's an $80 savings.Last edited: Nov 30, 2014 -
Hey guys, ordered my p650se a week ago, should arrive soon.
Does every one suffers from the 970m issues?(unable to active it).
It would be a problem for me sending it back after recieving.
I guess I should hope it would be fine on my machine? -
Could you guys please expand a little on that optimus problem ?
Only dx9 games are running on intel only ? crysis/farcry 1 for instance ?
Because BF4 and recent games seem to work just fine on the 970M -
59 degrees in the GPU and 68 in the CPU after a 3dmark11 run. More than 10.000 gpu points, that's great.
So... seems that the samsung PLS screen replacement is the best option for a vivid image quality. -

i think now, that it will be ok to use icd, BUT as i am travelling a lot, I will not use it.
my fear is that when i put my laptop bag done, there will be some little hits, and MAYBE the heatsink will slide a bit, and will do some deeper scratches
after a year or so... but this is just MY fear on itLast edited: Nov 30, 2014danisrael likes this. -
You would have to give it a good smashing to move the heatsink. Probably to the point of damage to the laptop itself. The heatsink isn't going to move a couple of millimeters on its own or with a tiny hits. There is multiple screws holding it down the heatsink.
So yes, it is your fear and you are over thinking this way to much.jaybee83 likes this. -

After an 1 hour Farcry 4 maxed out run the GPU reached 66 degrees while the CPU stayed cold with 62 ridiculous degrees.

I just bought an Samsung 840 EVO 500gb SSD. It says it's "bulk" and doesn't come with any power/data cables. Do I need to order them aswell, or is it not necessary? Fast answer would be great.. In case I have to change my order.
I will replace this with the HD that's already inside the laptop, so maybe I can use those cables? -
I'm having low CPU bench scores. Maybe that's the main reason of my low CPU temps.
It seems it cannot reach more than 3.09 GHz when the 4 cores are running, instead of the stock 3.29 GHz for 4 cores.
What could it be? Does the power cable have something to do with that? Just installed Throttlestop with no luck.
About 6000 points in 3dmark11 physics bench, while it must score about 7500. The same with XTU bench, I'm scoring 400 points instead of the 650 normal score.Last edited: Nov 30, 2014 -

How could it be possible to score the same with 2.5 and 3.5 clock?? -
Hey everyone. I'm new around here. I've spent a lot of time the last few days reading this and other threads dedicated to new, high-end laptops, as I've decided I want to upgrade from my W350STQ/ GTX 765M.
The P650 seems to not have too many issues, especially compared to the Gigabyte P35 v3. For all of you out there that have gotten a P650/ P651, would you agree? I'd like to know before pulling the trigger on a purchase. I know that this laptop isn't perfect, but it seems to be the best purchase for what I'm looking for: a reasonably sized and reliable high performance laptop.
So would you recommend that I go ahead and buy it, or is there a better high-end, sub 6 pound laptop on the market that's not got throttling/ heat problems?
EDIT: Forget to mention that I'll probably be getting the XMG P505 with a 1080p IPS screen and a GTX 980M.Last edited: Nov 30, 2014 -
Ok, something is not right with this Optimus technology... I'm trying to run Far Cry 1, an old school DX9 game, and it should run on the 970m without it even getting warm - and yet my CPU is pegged at 78 C while the GPU is idle at 50 C.
This is with farcry.exe configured to use the 970m in NVidia Control Panel, and launching it with the right-click run with high performance graphics processor. -
-
This is restricted to old games.
Far cry 4 is out y'know :hi2: -
-
Have you managed to get games to use the 970M at all? Optimus usually works fine with all those games you mentioned.

And this method:
Download the latest Video drivers for both Intel and Nvidia from the Notebook manufacturers website. Uninstall what you have for both Intel and Nvidia. Install the Intel first followed by the Nvidia. Next, go to Nvidia site and download the latest driver you wish to use. Start the installer to allow it to unpack and cancel after the Compatibility check. Go to Start, right click MY Computer and select properties. In the popup window on the top left, select Device Manager. Unstack the display adapters and right click the Nvidia to select Update Driver Software. When asked, select let me choose and then have disk, browse to Nvidia unpacked folder (default C:/Nvidia) and keep going deeper until you get to the Display adapter folder. In this folder it will automatically see the .inf so just select open and it will fall back to the original window where your driver is listed, select next and allow it to install, reboot and you are done without breaking the Optimus controller and have the lastest Nvidia driver. There is no way to update the Optimus or intel without breaking the controller and updating PhysX will break it as well.

For those of you wondering whether or not the dGPU of this laptop is being used or not: according to the User's Manual, the first LED indicator (speed gauge icon) is meant to indicate the usage of the dGPU. Off = iGPU. On = dGPU. Here's a screen cap of the page for lazy folks like myself:
Can the owners confirm this? Does the LED indicator function as intended? -
-
Think I might benefit from a repaste - my CPU is routinely at 80C+. -
-
Also, idle temps for the 970m are around 40C, so 50C after playing for a while seems appropriate. -
So would you P650/ P651 owners recommend this laptop model overall? It seems like CPU/ GPU temps are good, although some people are having a few problems? -
-
Edit: I'd HIGHLY recommend getting an upgraded screen, though. Either an IPS from the manufacturer, or if you can, install a LTN156HL01-102 yourself (I love this panel, have I said that yet?)tfast500 likes this. -

Totally with you on the IPS panel. I'll be going for the XMG P505, which comes with oneDabeer likes this. -
Hi guys, my p651se came with an unsightly logo silkscreened on the lid. I really want to remove this, has anyone tried with their's?
One question though, does anyone know if the lid anodized aluminum or powder coated? -
My new laptop arrived days ago. It run well until today. I took it to my school and then when I came home the slot for the earphone does not work. I do not know what happened. Just a few hours, without any collision or something that may cause trouble. I checked it for several earphones and no sound came out. Is it due to software or hardware?

You can check your playback settings from the sound settings. -
Actually it worked before and I fix it now but I am still a little worried. First I reboot the system and it still did not work. Then I got the laptop upside down and open the bottom to check the inside. And after I opened it, I did not know what to do, so I just touched some part of the hardware and then put it back. Then after rebooting, my earphone worked well. I am worried that my hardware may have bad connection which should not be happen in such a new laptop.
Oh,no. It went wrong again. I just pull of my earphones and took a shower. Then sound was just gone.Last edited: Dec 1, 2014 -

Guys can anyone give or point me towards some advice on the 3K Matte vs. 4K Glossy displays available for the P650SG? I've heard some varying opinions on other sites so a bit of clarification would be good. I'll be using the laptop between home and work for graphic design. Most of my work is printed if it's relevant.
Also, here's where I'll be purchasing from in Australia: Metabox Prime P650SG Laptop
Apologies if it's been covered earlier in this thread. -
What's the difference between P650SE and P651SE?
-
Brushed finish (P650) seems to be the only thing available in the US, unfortunately - but it still looks quite nice. -
Is there any way to turn on this frequency boost without messing with gpu bios/voltages/etc?
Also,is it just my laptop or speakers on this one are crappy in general? -
The 3K model offered by Metabox is the same one as found in the GS60 3K and new P35X 3k. That is to say an RGBW sub pixel arrangement with decent colours and very high brightness, but slight graininess if you look closely.
EDIT: The Panasonic 3K is actually RGB. My mistake.
The 4K model with Metabox is the crappy 48Hz IPS display as found in the Lenovo Y50. Not bad otherwise but I demand at least 60Hz in a screen.Last edited: Dec 2, 2014 -

its probably the latter, since msi is known for their superior speaker systems compared to pretty much everything else in the notebook market
