no need, tons of user reports out there that say the 347.xx driver series prevent any overclocking. that and prema himself cautioning people to avoid these drivers due to that exact issue...

In case anybody's wondering. I saw 3 versions of these today.

GTX 970 and 4720 cpu with IGZO 4K screen ( glossy ) Looks best

GTX 980 and 4720 cpu with IGZO 4K screen ( matte ) Looks good, but I can see some grain on the screen, Not sure if it would bother me if I actually bought it, it's not much, but it's there

GTX 970 and i7-4790K CPU ( 4.00GHz - 4.40GHz turbo ) with regular 1080 screen, looks like crap next to IGZO screens, now why would you use a screen like that on a machine like that?
That version is like putting a Ferrari engine inside a BMW then taking a dump on the hood. Doesn't make sense.

Can't mix and match, those are the configurations at that place.

If I finally decide to buy, I'm pretty sure I'm going with the glossy 4K IGZO screen, first option above.

no surprise if the 1080 screen is a TN panel vs. the high-res IPS panels right next to it. also, that machine with the 4790K is a ZM series Clevo, totally different model than the other two :)

@Darkinstar: thus far, all of them... at least havent seen or heard any incompatible pairs yet

I got the Sharp 4K panel from Sager, it is quite grainy. Is it supposed to be glossy or grainy? Or maybe I have received a wrong panel?

Also, since I joined the forums late, I have only got bits and bobs on the information regarding the Intel XTU and seen little about the 70v undervolt.

@jaybee83 could you please explain to me what people have been doing on the intel xtu? is it just the 70v undervolt? or have some tried oc and other things?

Also, I'm sort of unclear at what exactly the 70mv does, as of what I know, it has helped reduce temps and helped with the thermal throttle?

The screen is glossy when I look at it with the screen off.

XTU is pretty versatile, you can oc and undervolt according to your mood. undervolting is a software way to optimize Temps and power consumption.

using 1.5v ram in this machine is a bit of a lottery, since the mobo is gonna undervolt those sticks and u cant be sure if theyre gonna run stable at that lower voltage. some sticks do, others do not.

Since people are talking about ram....I can see 99% of the people that bought this laptop went with 16gb of RAM.

    Any special teason for that?

I thought 8gb is more than enough

yeah, mainstream is going straight towards 8GB these days, and im not recommending anyone who asks to go below that. so it only makes sense for power users to have at least 16 GB :) only reason i didnt go for 32 was better overclocking ability with 2 sticks vs. 4 :p :D

also, lets say that @LunaP is like 5 levels above your average power-user here on NBR  :D you should go and check out her rig, haha, its insane!

I went for 32gb straight out the gate. Now I'm figuring out how to fill it up. Most usage I've seen is 12gb but mostly kicking at 8-10gb usage.

there's no reason to get 16gb unless you run a lot of VMs, which people. going with 16gb just so you can get the power user feeling is pretty pointless to me. you already have a 970m to prove that, no need for 16gb of ram

Does anyone have a photo or description on how to tell if my laptop came with the upgraded:
High performance, high quality copper VGA and CPU heatsinks to keep your system running cool.
I just openned up my laptop to install a new HDD and noticed nothing different from the photos i see online of "stock" cooling heatsinks.

Damn that's an expensive upgrade... And it looks the same? I'd be pretty upset. Maybe they forgot to include it like they forgot my IPS :p
So far their solution is ship me the laptop (takes a week) then we ship you replacement (takes a week). This leaves me with no laptop for 2 weeks. As a computer science student this is unacceptable... They refuse to express ship.

Video editing in Premiere Pro or re-muxing Blu Rays is the only time I've topped 16GB. Those are large files to work with from the get go so that probably why.

Meh... numerical analysis is the answer. When you work with a matrix of some hundred million entries you start wondering why 64 GB are not supported on laptops. My 16 GBs are so easily filled up when working with large matrices of data that I'm wondering why I didn't immediately buy 32 gigs.

I cannot believe these temperatures... On a cooling pad playing bf4 on ultra, max GPU was 55 and max CPU was 70 without any undervolting. I was super skeptical but man this thing is awesome! Can not wait to OC it! Once Prema comes with BIOS/EC 306, its on! > :)

Depends on what you ordered. That's why I posted my last post so people know. Sharp 4K comes in 2 versions, Matte and Glossy. Matte is grainy, glossy one is not. I wouldn't say it's quite grainy, at least not the one I saw, but it is definitely noticeable.

Yes, but luckily we have nifty people around here such as prema or fox to cook us nice ways to get around those limitations for a beer. And we should keep it up, because it is indeed nonsense to limit that much such high-end components.

Yeah. And then people are going "why you OC for like 3fps better performance and such heat".
    I was like http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...nvidia-mobile-gpus.771169/page-5#post-9924962

That doesn't work. If your chip is locked on a driver level, it's LOCKED. Same with if it's locked below BIOS level. The HQ chips are TDP limited/locked below BIOS level; nothing you ever do on a notebook EVER will let them draw enough power like the MQ chips do.

As for the GPUs, you could bake in OCs with a vBIOS flash, but then you'd be stuck at that OC unless you wanted to change it, and what if you couldn't boot into windows one day? How'd you adjust your vBIOS back etc? Unless you have a dedicated flash drive JUST for nVflashing which you never touch, ever, just in case?

Hi, noob question here. When the laptop is turned off at 100% battery and the AC adapter is still plugged in, is it still charging or the power goes directly to the motherboard?

Well....IMO if NVIDIA doesn't cut this out I can see 2 ways that this thing will play out:

-Utilities that will allow you to modify vBios in a simple user friendly way and then flash it
-more modded drivers...it's not like there aren't people out there already doing this

yup yup. for now: use pre-347 driver to find your sweet spot for overclocking / modify vbios with those clocks and flash / underclock & undervolt to stock for every day usage with newest drivers
