Most have some form of tamper detection on them however.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I think I'm gonna return the 850 Evo SSD and purchase an 850 Evo M.2.

Too bad though, I got the SSD for $45 less on Black Friday. Doesn't look like the M.2 ever goes on sale.

I'm gonna skip the 950 Pro for now as it seems like there are a lot of issues with it on this machine and it's sold out almost everywhere in Canada anyway.

The M.2 drive is very nice, fast and very light.

I thought about doing raid with dual 2.5" SSDs. It is technically cheaper and about half the speed of nvme. The real question is beyond games, what else would you use it for? I prefer to use m2 for games and a larger non-SSD drive for other data such as media, software ( nothing heavy like Adobe though) or virtual machines.

    It's really up to you.

P.S. - I bought this to be used as a cover for my laptop: Kamor 15 15.6 16 inch Water-resistant Neoprene Laptop Sleeve Case Bag/Notebook Computer Case/Briefcase Carrying Bag/Skin Cover for Acer/Asus/Dell/Fujitsu/Lenovo/HP/Samsung/Sony/Toshiba(Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H4OWPF8/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_ygWEwbP9YTVMJ

It's not completely snug. Maybe about half an inch of extra space. Overall it feels like it's pretty well protected but it may move around slightly. The material feels a bit cheap but we'll padded.

Considering the price, it's good enough for me as I will be putting it into a backpack while it's in the cover. I just didn't want it to get wet when it rains.

Edit: if you can spend a little extra, it might be worth it, otherwise, this is ok.

Is there any speed advantage of the 850 Evo M.2 over the 850 Evo SSD? They're both Sata III, so I assume if there is, would be small?

According to Newegg's product page the stats are the same, but the MTBF ( mean time between failure) on the m2 is 1,500,000 where the 2.5" is 2,000,000.

Interesting, I never realized the 2.5" lasts longer. Keep in mind though that it means 228 years vs 181 years. I'm pretty sure the silicon will fail way before that due to read / writes.

Due to the slightly different NAND packaging I think they trade blows slightly depending on the task with the 500GB m.2 coming out on top. It's a small difference though.

I just bought a new p650re3 and I'm debating if the ic diamond does anything. I get that on an old machine, repaste is a good idea, but a new machine? Is it a waste of money?

I think somewhere deep in this thread someone tried it and the difference was minimal. A few degrees.

If you have just a regular thermal paste, and not like IC Diamond, CLU, or something similar, you could maybe get a few degrees improvement by using a better thermal paste. But if you did get IC Diamond or something similar, if you repaste it, you might only see a couple degrees difference if there wasn't enough applied the first time typically.

Unless you need to repaste because of age, or if you suspect that the retailer has done a terrible job with it, I wouldn't bother. And anyways, the temps on these machines are excellent. In my 651RE6 they are, anyway. The coolest laptop I've ever had. The processor turbos are in action even under severe stresstesting, for chrissakes ... that's a first for me.

Personally I think it's not worth paying the extra to have the reseller repaste... In Clevo's it's really easy to repaste so open it up and do it yourself! Eventually you need to learn how to open it up anyways to clean out the fans etc... It will save you like $15-20 to do it yourself... I suggest getting some Gelid GC Extreme and repasting your laptop!

    Excuse me if this has been answered already but I can't seem to find it;

I recently got my P650RG, coming from an Asus N76VB.
I want to use an external subwoofer to improve the sound a bit since I got spoiled with the Asus (which also had an external sub).
Now, the Asus had a seperate jack for the sub, the Clevo does not. However, when you plug in something in the mic jack, realtek asks whether it is a central/subwoofer output or mic in you just plugged in. So it seems like there is an option for it.
Before I buy a subwoofer, has anyone confirmed a setup like the following works?:
-External subwoofer in mic jack, sub might require extra power from an USB port.
-Middle and high freq sound from internal laptop speakers.

    Thanks!

As long as you're adding a external sub anyway, you might as well go for a full 2.1 system, surely?

But would the sound play via the bluetooth speaker (sub) and the laptop speakers at the same time?
If so, that would be ideal :)

No, the set would take over and provide better sound quality than a shared setup.

Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster!!

Recently acquired the P650RE-G from Metabox. (equivalent to the P650RE6).

Developed a problem the other day after 2 weeks of ownership.

When the Nvidia 970M card is active, after a few seconds, the NUM, CAPS and SCROLL LOCK LED's begin to flash, the computer beeps and the fan is on full throttle.
If I close the program using the 970M, things will return to normal, otherwise the PC will shut down after about 30 seconds.

Also, if I boot straight into BIOS, the same thing occurs, and computer shuts down about 30 seconds too.

I've got it booked to be returned to Metabox next week. My guess its a faulty nvidia graphics chip?

Thought I'll share on this forum if any one else has had a similar issue?

Try reinstalling your NVIDIA and Intel drivers... Uninstall both of them using Display Driver Uninstaller, then reinstall the Intel and then NVIDIA one.. If your still having these issues, your 970M is dead...

Hey so I'm trying to see where to install the M.2 Sata (not PCIe) and it appears that there are some wires taped down where I should be putting the chip. Are those supposed to be there?

Thanks for the reply TomJGX... do you think this would make any difference considering the issue exists in BIOS setup?

Yes, I have rma'd. I was thinking too it was overheating...when monitoring sensor temps with HWINFO and they were quite normal.
Oh well, guess I've just been unlucky. Looks like I will have bring out the W110ER out of retirement for a week!!

I don't know.. It could be your bad luck that you got a bad motherboard... Honestly the above is what I would try before RMAing.. It could be a bad driver install! Use DDU... I hope you haven't shipped it off yet!

Desktop vs notebook CPU, size + weight, socket vs soldered parts and battery life along with cost.

    So a lot basically.

Was all set to try out your suggestion.

Booted into Safe Mode and the same problem started straight away and computer shut down. Insufficient time to do any remove/install.

I have booked in the RMA, sending it back first working day in New Year. Works fine on the Intel graphics.

    Thanks for your help.

Excuse me Firon, which model is the one you got?

    ----------------------- For everyone
I'm interested in the P650RE6 and was wondering about battery life.. I do know it will be about 1 hour or so in heavy use but with low brightness and maybe just browsing... anyone knows? I've read lot of pages already but couldnt get an straight answer that could clear up my doubts.

Is there something I should know before buying it? Generic problems and things like that.

    Thanks and Greetings.

So I should remove the tape, install the SSD and tape the wires elsewhere? (do I need a special kind of tape?) I think the company I bought the laptop from put those there on purpose because I decided not to buy an M.2 drive from them at the last minute. They didn't seem happy about that. Wouldn't put it past them to try to make installing my own drive more difficult.

I don't think they were trying make it hard on you. Most likely it came from Clevo that way.

I assume you can tape it anywhere as long as your tape isn't conductive and doesn't cause anything to overheat (i.e. don't tape it to any chips/drives/ block vents). Electrical tape is probably your best bet.

I got my machine yesterday and install win10 on it. However, when I plugged it to a external monitor in discrete Nvidia mode, the external monitor refreshes every 5 minutes or so when I switched to performance mode in Clevo Control Center, it refreshes less frequently in quiet mode. The driver version is the latest 10.18.13.5900. I am wondering if this is the problem with the GPU or the Windows 10 system. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi guys,

I am looking for an alternative to Alienware 15 w/6820HK and 980M which unfortunately arrived with 4GB instead of 8GB VRAM as ordered. Dell are absolutely pathetic at handling this situation (there is a "980M 8GB" thread in the Alienware forum, if Clevo people would like to have a good laugh), so I started looking for alternatives and found this:

    http://mysn.co.uk/xmg-p506-gaminglaptop

The machine is very similar to AW15, however, there are a few differences:

+ Supports 64GB which is a big plus for me
    + Lighter
    + Aluminium case
+ Good 300 nits FHD LG panel, the same I miraculously won in the Dell lottery
+ Full keyboard looks better for work purposes (is it?)
+ Excellent configuration transparency (e.g. the FHD screen model is specified)

    - Anecdotally Temp management slightly worse (my CPU temp is 45C withoverclocking)
    - 60 instead 92 Whr battery
    - Anecdotally worse build quality (some issues with the bezel?)
    - No GA (don't care that much)
    - Just one NVMe SSD M.2 supported (that's fine)

    http://www.panelook.com/LP156WF6-SPB1_LG Display_15.6_LCM_overview_24180.html

My main concern regards general build quality etc. The AW15 build is really quite solid, albeit plastic - can I expect matching quality from XMG? Any other issues to be aware of?

The reseller themselves look solid, I expect the customer support will wipe the floor with Dell's - not a huge challenge anyway ;)

Any comments would be much appreciated.

    Hello, first post here.
Thanks to all for the nice information shared.

Been reading for some days and was just about to order A P651RG from CEG in Germany. I am new to the Clevo movement...
The thing is that just came across the P751DM, which can get to the same cost if I get one step down the GPU.
I found some reference regarding both models on the thread, but not considering the dispair GPUs.
I don´t mind the extra size and weight, but wanted to hear what you think about it.

The two setups would roughtly be:
    -P651RG, i7-6820HK 8mb, 980M 8gb, 16gb ram
    -P751DM, i7-6700K 8mb, 970M 6gb, 16gb ram

Both with some medium SSD m.2 and an hibrid sshd.
Will likely increase ram to 32 in any case soon, but I am already extending my cash to the max I can for now.

My intuition is that the difference in CPU will largely counteract for overall use the difference on GPUs. Benchmarks show some 20% advantage on the desktop processor.
Heat is also a concern in the desktop version, but i think that should be properly adressed, right?

I will also use it for working in 3d , having to produce realtime (hence the GPU doubt) and offline heavy renderings (hence my CPU inclination).

Unfortunately I can´t economically extend to get the 980M for the P751DM now, so was wondering if someone would like to share some thought about it.
Thanks in advance and nice hollidays

@etern4l : Clevo build quality is excellent. The laptop looks feels and works great. I just got my P650RG last week from RJTech, no complaints at all.
Also, I read somewhere that back in the glory days of Alienware, it was manufactured by Clevo. I'm not a fan of Dell, the new maker of alienware, never was.
PS: I felt all the re-brands - Sager, Eurocom, XMG were more expensive than original clevo, at no real benefit.

@titopte : Get the Clevo P651RG. That's really a no brainer decision. Especially since you are working in 3D - 980M over 970M - the difference is significant.

Thanks Xtriptix. I picked XMG just by going through the list of local resellers. mysn.co.uk seem to be well regarded. yes, they are more expensive that an unbranded Clevo, but that seems to be translating to improved customer service. After going through the Dell CS pain, improved customer service is a tangible value I would look forward to receiving for my money :)

Hey Xriptix, thanks for your insight.
I would have thought that the inverse would be the first instinctive call. You get me thinking now...

Do you think both GPUs have that great difference in performance? Overpassing their processors difference, for the complete experience?

Take into account that working with 3d design is more heavily CPU biased than normally thought from a gamer standpoint. But even with that in mind, bigger GPUs are needed for realtime raytraced rendering.

    Cheers

@titopte GPU performance difference 980M over 970M is significant -20-30% (benchmarks & gaming). That difference is enough to justify paying 200-300 extra for 980M.

Also having the overclockable i7-6820HK is a bonus for you (3d work) - as long as you get some extra cooling while doing it.

Both these options at the same price point. I wouldn't think twice

@etern4l I like to think I will never need to contact any customer service dept. Has worked so far!

It really depends on the program and what exactly it's doing as to which would be better.
