Hello! I'm thinking about buying this laptop with the hd 7970m's in crossfire, but how long will it last before it will start struggeling with games? Is it worth to buy this one instead of buying a p150em, with a gtx 670mx? I know this one would be faster, but would it last long enough to be worth it?

    Thanks! :D

Its always hard to predict this since it really depends on how demanding the new games will be as they come out. Typically 2-3yrs should be no problem. You may not be able to run the newest games then on max settings but should still be ok when knocking the settings down a little.

Well each of the 7970M cards is about 60% faster than a 670MX.

I replaced a 256GB 2.5" Crucial M4 (on Clevo's SATAIII port) with a 240GB Intel 525 mSATA (on Clevo's SATAII port) and it's not as slow as I expected on the Clevo's SATAII mSATA port. In benchmarks, writes are about the same, but reads are about half as fast with the Intel mSATA on the Clevo's SATAII port. No real-world difference though, Windows 7 boot takes about 3 seconds longer and apps take slightly longer to load, but overall still extremely fast and not noticeable.

Also replaced two new 1TB Seagate Solid State Hybrid drives (SATAIII 5400RPM 8GB MLC 64MB Cache) with two 1TB Hitachi 7K1000 HDDs (SATAIII 7200RPM 32MB Cache), and the Hitachis are faster as data drives, with very little noise and vibration. The 2 HDDs are directly below your left hand, and the vibration with the Seagates was annoying me, even though they spin slower. Strange.

Nice info about the drives. The Hybrid drives only help if you have your OS installed on them so you probably were never taking advantage of the SSD on them and just getting the 5400RPM performance, 7200RPM does give a nice improvement if you've got large files on there.

Well my computer was delivered yesterday as promised. Can't believe I got it as fast as I did so just want to say Thank You to the people at Xotic for expediting it as quickly as they did. I'm loving it so far. The screen looks amazing on this. I went through starting to set it up and make sure everything was ok and so far so good. But reading through the owners manual, I came across the part to set up TPM and IRST. I'm not sure what that is so if you guys could help me here, I would appreciate it. Do I need to set these up and activate it?

You're welcome! Shoot me your order details or paste them in here and it'll be a little easier to help out as it's possible you don't even have the need to do RST. TPM is also not really necessary outside of corporate environments or security oriented folks.

Yeah, I'd forget about Intel SRT entirely. Really only useful if you have a small SSD and want to use it for caching the HDD. It's limited to 64gb for the size of the SRT partition and really won't speed up much to do with file access unless you're installing programs to the HDD you want to open fast. Using the SSD standalone as an OS and install drive is going to be your best bet.

For TPM, unless you were concerned about the data on your machine falling into the wrong hands and causing corporate espionage I wouldn't worry to much about it. Basically makes it tough to access your data without permission.

Just about everything should be good. Probably wouldn't hurt to check the display driver version to see if the latest is installed and if not get that going for yourself. Other than that, sit back and enjoy the machine!

My bad for not resonding sooner. I've been traveling for work. Anyway, so I actually had a little scare last night. Before I left my house I got the huge 98 updates from Windows when I shut down. Got to the hotel hours later and turned it on and that message "preparing to configure windows, dont turn off computer" pops up but I'm not sure if it was because I wasn't connected to the hotel wifi yet or not but it just kept spinning at 0 % and finally shut off after a few minutes. I decided not to touch it again until I got to work this morning and connect it to a hard line just in case and it seems to be running ok now. Hope nothing got screwed up. So Derek, where would I check for the disply driver update? Oh and a little indicator popped up also saying an update was available for nvidia driver version 314.22. Should I update to that also or will my version be ok for now? I think mine is like 304...

Thanks again in advance for all your help also. I have to say one of the main reasons I choose to go not only with Sager but also with Xotic is because of all the help and support there is on this forum. You guys are really awesome and it makes me , someone who's not all comp savvy, feel comfortable knowing that I can always reach out on here if I have any problems.

Exactly what we're here for, we're always glad to help.

I'd definitely jump over to Nvidia's site and download the latest GPU drivers. Just as simple as finding your GPU (make sure you're looking at the mobile cards) and downloading them. When installing them you'll see a button that says "advanced" or something along those lines. Clicking that allows you to select "clean install" and that should work for you just fine.

I believe it is manufacturer dependent and must be enabled by them to work. Sagers as far as I'm aware do not support TPM. I'm not too familiar with the intricacies of whether you can flash a Clevo BIOS and have it enabled though, maybe Prema can chime in on that as well.

So I see the Sager website no longer has the AMD cards available. Now the base model is dual 670MX's, and only $100 for the 680M upgrade. I'm trying to remember, but that's a big discount on the 680, right?

The whole TPM chip was missing from the Sager board we tested it on, so there was nothing the BIOS could do about it...

    Hi all,

My first post here. This is a great thread! At somepoint I will take time to read the whole lot.

After much "should I? Yes you should, no you can't. Sod it yes you can" I bought myself a clevo in January. I am totally hooked on it!

    p370em
    120hz 3d matte screen
    i7-3840qm
    16gb kingston hyper-x ram
    2 x 680m sli
    240gb intel 520 ssd
    750gb wd scorpio hdd
    killer 1103 (arrrggh!!!)
    and the nvidia steroscopic kit

I loves it! (apart from the 1103.. grrr) It is a great investment. Never had a machine that was even half as powerfull as this beast! Bought for gaming, 3d lighting vizualizers, video editing and DAWS.

Very new to the world of top end machines and was looking for advice on things like hardware maintaince and software tools that I should get or any tips of any sort.

Also wanted to see if anyone knew a way of controlling the fans manually? Mine seems to run a bit hot sometimes when I play mechwarrior online. It would be great to have them running at a set speed whilst gaming, some where between medium and max speed and off or very very low whilst not being used. I use this machine in theaters and for music editing so it's it really needs to be silent running (ish). I have tried to search it but sometimes it feels like looking for a needle in a needley haystack.

MWO temps sit at around 85c+ and can sometimes reach a max of 92c which is about when the fans kick in to high gear. Room temp is currently about 26c I have the nvidia experience installed and I am using there recommended settings.

One last thing is that my cpu can get up to temps of around the same at about 40% load and idles at around 40c. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or not?

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

    Gary

Your CPU definitely shouldn't be seeing 85+C. Mine typically idles around 36-40C or so and won't even crack 70C under load (fans don't even max out). All-time low for my CPU is 27C. Might need to re-paste, especially if you're using the factory sillyputty paste.

MWO can get sort of demanding on the GPU at times so the fan may occasionally turn on, though with a good pasting job it should be minimal. I've got to play a solid 30 minutes or so before my fan kicks on when I play it. Even then, it runs a while and turns off. It'll be another 10 or 15 mins before it has to spin back up.

    Hi Laptop aficionados,
Haven't been on this site much since my problems with my G73 all finally got sorted. Now I'm expecting to be trolling through this thread in about a week when my:

    Metabox (Clevo) P370EM3
    i7-3630QM
    120Hz 3D 17.3"
    SLi 2xGTX-680M
    2x8GB 1600Mhz RAM
    Win7 Pro
    6235 wifi
No HDD or SSD or mSATA drives o_O
    External BluRay USB
    Turns up.

I will sort out the HDDs/SSD/mSATA stuff later on :/

So I was on the computer last night and had it resting on my lap and when I got up for a second, I lifted the laptop to put it on the table and it just turned off. Not a shutdown or anything, it just went from being on to being off. Is this something I should be concerned about? I've only had the computer for a week now and haven't had this happen before.

Was it plugged in? Are both battery catchs set in the locked position? One catch does this when you put the battery in and the other you have to do yourself.

No it wasn't plugged in but I checked the catchs after I saw your post and sure enough only one was locked in position. I opened it when I first unboxed it to make sure the battery was there but didn't realize that I needed to snap the second one in place. I heard the click and thought I was good you know. I guess that was the problem so thanks for helping me out. I wouldn't think that something like that would cause it

    Hi there,

Hmmm so it is high and it could be the grease. I had the arctic mx-4 grease added to my order when I placed it. Any idea if this a good product to use or suggest another? Never even knew this stuff exsisted till about 5 months ago! Steep learning curve getting this machine!

I also cleaned the fans and heatsinks today. I have done this twice since I got it but never realized you had to take the fans out and clean the heatsinks from the inside. Bit of a build of dust! Gpu temps have dropped a fair bit (not yet had time to test properly yet) which is nice. No change to the cpu though it is still getting upto 85c+. Also I am using open hardware monitor to get these readings. Is this a reliable program?

Thank you for your response, I am glad I asked.

Did you remove the heatsink from the CPU/GPU to clean it? That is good if you're going to repaste it but you must clean off the existing thermal compound and apply new. If you remove it and put it on without doing that you're creating a lot of air gaps which will cause high temp. I'd stop using the computer until you get then thermal compound on there

I only removed the fan units and nothing else. There was a bit of a collection of dust around the heatsinks so I used compressed air and a fine brush to remove it. It should have arctic mx-4 grease on there already and is only 4 months old. Could you tell me how often I should re-paste and also if the grease I have on there is ok to use?

    Thank you for your help.

Definitely should see some improvement from popping the fans off for a "deep cleaning." That alone fixed the temperature problems I was having personally.

As for the thermal compound, the type of compound used is far less important than how well it is applied. Personally, I flat out don't trust any retailer pasting my computer for 2 reasons:

    A) I have no way of knowing whether or not they put it on. If I take the heatsink off to check, then I've got to re-paste anyway even if they did put it on there. Also...
    B) Even if they did put it on there, it's pretty likely that it wasn't an optimal job given that retailers have to err on the side of "too much" paste Vs. "not enough" to avoid damaging components. Too much isn't optimal, and not enough fries parts, so it's a catch 22.

Though, if you absolutely have no clue how to do it yourself and don't want to learn how to do it, you're probably better off leaving whatever job they did on it in place, as it will indeed at least be functional however they applied it. If not... well... then they're the ones who have to pay for it if something goes wrong. Or at least they should be :)

With that said, although I have no personal experience with Arctic MX-4, I have used Arctic Silver 5 and presently use IC Diamond. I can tell you that they both work well, but IC Diamond does work a bit better. I've used a few other pastes for "professional" reasons and I've never really come across a "bad" paste. Like I said, it's always pretty much down to the application.

As for re-pasting, if you use some of the supposedly "higher quality" stuff, the paste ought to outlast your laptop. Some folks are paranoid and do it yearly or every 6 months or so, but honestly until you can be certain it's causing a problem, it's better off left alone. I'm pseudo-paranoid, so I do mine every 2 years. That is of course after verifying its properly applied in the first place, which can only be assured if you know what you're doing and paste it yourself or you have a trusted third party do it and watch them.

The more important thing to do here I'd say it to keep check on your fans. I've never had a laptop fan collect dust in the way that the ones in these units do. For some reason the way the fan and heatsinks are designed leads to a significant amount of dust getting trapped in pretty much the worst possible place it could be (that little area you likely found wads of dust in). If I figure out something suitable to replace them with, rest assured, I'm going to. Also if I find something with neon lighting that I can have controlled by my keyboard's backlight on/off switch, I'm definitely going that route :p

As for the CPU still literally frying itself, something is wrong there.

First things first, verify that the CPU fan is actually running. Given that the thing has 3 fans, it can be hard to tell by listening, so put your hand back there, FN+9 your fans to make them spin full tilt, and actually FEEL that air is coming out of the center and right (left if the rear of the laptop is facing you) fans.

Secondly, after verifying that the fans are spinning properly, get yourself a set of tools and make sure that the heatsinks are properly seated and that the screws are properly tightened. Don't strong-arm it, just make sure the screws are actually reasonably tightened. They shouldn't be "easy" nor difficult to unscrew.

If those are in check, then personally, I'd have to think the pasting job is the problem. Now, you could send it in and have them re-paste it, but understand that as I mentioned earlier they have to err on the side of "too much," which could very well be causing high temps. They shouldn't quite be THAT high, but they will be higher nontheless. Not to mention you'd be without your computer for likely a few weeks. I'd say either take it to a local shop to have it re-pasted, or research the hell out of it and do it yourself.

If none of that works, your CPU's temp sensor could just be borked, in which case you'd need to have it replaced.

Also, my favorite little quick-use CPU temp monitoring program is Core Temp, but I use a few others depending on what I'm doing at the time. I've literally got a folder of toys dedicated to monitoring/testing various elements of my computer lol. You'll definitely want to have at least two temp monitoring programs on hand just in case something is screwy with one program or the other.

I think Bad Teddy summed up everything and a whole lot more. I am currently waiting for a processor to come in for my white book/barebone 9370 then I will make a quick video for tear down and repasting the GPU/CPU.

Everyone has different beliefs on when to repaste, but if you do no overclocking, and use the the system in a climate-controlled environment, then I do not believe any repasting should be necessary (for the life of your machine) under normal operating conditions. However, I believe your symptoms are abnormal and therefore warrant a look. Is your unit still under warranty? I would suggest contacting the retailer who sold you the unit prior attempting anything you are not readily familiar with.

It's true that most people can get away with not repasting for quite some time, but I'd definitely not recommend going the life of the machine without repasting. If you do, it's likely the fact that you're not repasting that has caused it to last not as long. The compound will eventually turn into a dried out mass that is just terrible at thermal transfer. Helped out a buddy on his ~5 year old asus and it took me about 6 applications of Arcticlean before I could get the stuff mostly off. Definitely try to repaste once or twice a year, at the minimum though I wouldn't go more than two years. Thermal compound is relatively inexpensive when buying a tube yourself and so there really isn't a reason not to.

Hi everyone - I'm hoping someone can give me a straightforward answer to this question:

I have a NP9370 (purchased last November from Xotic) with crossfire 7970m's, and I am itching to figure out a solution to get a 120Hz screen in this laptop. I've read many claims of yes and no, with claims regarding:

    - 40pin LVDS vs required 50pin eDP for 120hz
    - AMD non-compatibility for 120hz

    etc...

Then I read this comment today: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...ger-np9370-owners-lounge-123.html#post9117277

However 2 posts down claim that only nvidia will be compatible.

Could someone please clarify this once and for all??? Is it actually possible to get 120Hz screen in my NP9370 non-3d CFX 7970m lappy?

    FYI I am able to choose 17.3" Sager FHD 16:9 120Hz "MatteType" 72% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080) (SKU - S1S556) ( + 150 ) along with CrossfireX ENABLED DUAL (2) 2048MB PCI-Express AMD Radeon 7970M's (4096MB Total) w/GDDR5 DX11 Video Cards [User Upgradeable] (SKU - S3R706) ( + 250 ) AND ADD TO CART on xoticpc's customization page for the NON-3D np9370.

    Please help!

Note: I really don't care for any 3D at all. I just want a 120Hz screen to play counterstrike.

You can run 120hz with the AMD GPU but 3D is not supported

Thanks Hutsady! Could you please reference me as to what panel I need to purchase, and if I might need any additional components (a different cable for connecting the panel to mobo)?

    Please let me know!
Is this something Xotic could offer me?

I ordered back in November, and a couple weeks after receiving my laptop I had called you guys asking if 120hz was at all possible internally or via displayport1.2 to a 120hz montior, eventually getting an answer of no.

Glad to hear it is possible now!

We dont have them for sale and unfortuenatly i dont have a model number to suggest either. Sager installs those directly at their place. I know we can get it set up to be sent in and have one installed for you, not sure what the cost would be but our service dept can set that up. If you'd like to do that you can send me an email (click on my name in my signature) and i can let you know how to set that up.

You should be OK as I have heard of other people installing ubuntu before. You wont find any drivers for it via Clevo or Sager though as there in no Linux support, they just support Windows.

I know there will be many laptops but what will be with np9370? What will weget as a "rebranded" np9370? I know haswell and new gen of gpu, but when, what specs or... Do u have any news? Does it worth to wait for the new generation? I would like to play on this laptop for a long time (at least 4-5 years) and not on low graphic...
