Being happy with your purchase is the main thing no matter how much time you spent going over every decision.
Good to hear about the CL11. I wanted CL9 too in 8GB sticks and low voltage 1.35V before Mythlogic talked about the issues they saw with 8GB Lovos. I wasn't sure about regular CL9 1.5V, 8GB. The bonus for going with a builder shows.

Hi guys, how is Enduro performance and quality on this laptop!? Can anybody explain in details if it works or still has issues!?
I remember on last generation (P170EM) had lots of issues. I mean comparing to Optimus.
If somebody got this with 8970m please share your experience.
    Thanks in advance

Is there an Intel XTU guide on these forums? I haven't found it and I've never used it. I used Throttlestop on my old W700 with its Qx9300 Quad, but I've never tried anything with turbo and this chip is not unlocked. I'm a heavy Lightroom user, and LR is a CPU hog. Pretty much the only thing that speeds it up is CPU speed. I barely use the GPU. I'm finding the 4900QM on my Nyx 1713 to be about twice as fast as my old machine, which is great and I'm happy with it, but for large 14bit raw files we're still talking about some waiting. Things that took 8 or 9 seconds on the old machine still take around 3 or 4 seconds, and I'm wondering if I can speed it up even a little further. The stock setup from Mythlogic in performance power mode is that the CPU runs at about 3.5-3.6 at idle. Doing the core stress test in XTU brings the steady speed down to about 3.4-3.5 for the duration of the test. After a bit of reading on various threads here and a couple of watchdog shutdowns, I've figured a few things out, but I could be way off.

So I've boosted the Turbo Boost Power Max from 47-95, same with the Short Power Max, and increased the Turbo time limit to the max of 128 seconds and then I've boosted the Turbo to 42, 42, 41, 41, and now it runs at about 4.2 at idle and passes the stress test with average temp of around 82-83, but during the stress test it comes down to the same 3.4-3.5 speed for the duration. Shouldn't it run faster for at least the first 128 seconds?

In real world usage, it appears that LR really only utilizes 4 threads. It would max out the old Qx9300 when rendering a large batch of raw images, whereas now the cores seem to max out at around 60% and I assume this is hyperthreading at work, turning 4 cores into 8. I imported a batch of 600 images, rendering 1:1 previews and watched. This is the sort of thing you setup and walk away from. The old machine would take probably 3 hrs, while the 4900 did it in about 1:10. While it's rendering the cpu load spikes up and down and I believe at the end it averaged about 3.7Mhz and the temps averaged about 83. Speeding this process up is not my primary concern as it's going to take a while no matter what, although the huge reduction in time required is welcome. It's when going through the images 1 by 1 in developer mode that I need little bursts of CPU load and here I am interested in maxing out my speed. I know the gains won't be big or perhaps even noticeable, but the machine is a new toy and I'm interested in tinkering, but I'm also wondering why the CPU speed drops so precipitously under load. I thought the point of turbo was these short bursts of speed, and with the multiplyer for 4 cores set at 41, why do I see the speed drop down to 3.5-3.6 for a couple seconds when opening a new image in developer mode. Shouldn't it remain at 4.0? Thanks in advance to anyone who waded through this long post.

    regarding temps
i noticed my 170sm gpu reaches 89c on heavy load ( cpu hits 85 ).
if put it on a cushioned chair it the gpu reach 94c.

this during the 3dmark2011 benchmark. what are your temps like?

Don't put it on a soft surface! Quickest way to overheat it because you're blocking the vents for the fans, stopping air circulation! Always a hard surface, for any laptop.

I get mine Monday so I'll be able to comment on temperature soon!

Hi all. I just bought a Sager 8270S with the AMD 8970M GPU. However, I cant seem to get it to use the 8970. Any tricks I may be missing to make it primary device?

    Thanks

    Hey guys!

I'm new here and I'm looking for a mobile beast.
I checked Alienware but they seem too overpriced for the hardware, for me.

So I'm looking in to the Clevo P170SM . Can you tell if it's a good choice ?
I'm currently in the US but I'm going home to Europe, do you know if I'll have warranty there ?

I think I'll pick the AMD GPU option, how are the drivers, endure and stuff ?

Is the build solid, I see that's all plastic, but still is it good ?

Can I change the color of the keyboard light ?

    Thanks for your time!/

    George

Mine gets delivered tomorrow so I can't comment on build quality yet. But I do know that the keyboard definitely has colour changing backlight. For the warranty, you'd have to send it back to the country from where you bought it if it needed an RMA.

Build quality is quite high IMO. I'm coming from a thinkpad,W700 and I don't feel any qualitative difference. Seams are tight, everything lines up properly. Mine is a Mythlogic Nyx1713, and I'm very satisfied with the build quality.

As to noise, when the machine is under maximum load for a period and the CPU temps rise to near 90, the high speed fan kicks in and it can be loud, but the tempd do come down fast.

Don't have the AMD GPU so can't comment, but Optimus/Nividea works very well.

Is there an AMD control panel? With Optimus, you can go into the control panel and set Global GPU settings or for specific programs.

Hi, I'm new to the Clevo club as of today! :D

    1) Where can I download Clevo Control Centre? It's missing from my laptop for some reason.

    2) When I press the key combination to bring up the keyboard backlit control application (according to the manual) nothing happens?

EDIT: OK I installed the hotkey driver and it all works now. Phew!

So my fans just won't shut up. They're always audible, even when the CPU/GPU are both idling at 35°C. Is this normal for Clevo's? I'm new to the Clevo club, only had mine since yesterday! Is there a way to control fans at all, or a silent mode of any kind? The fans are loud even when on power saving mode! Bless them, you've gotta admire their work ethic, but it is a tad bit distracting when they're always on. Will I have to wait for Prema's BIOS mod?

Just ordered a new Clevo/Sager from LPC Digital, fairly minimal features:

    4700qm
    gtx 770m
    8gb ram (2x4)
    default 7200 RPM 750GB HDD
    intel wireless 802.11ac
No OS or frills, no upgrades besides the wifi

I've got a Momentus that's going to serve as the primary HDD so the new one will be relegated to storage. I have to say that it was a very tough call between this and a MSI GT70-2OC based build with almost the exact same specs for about the same price. In the end the subdued, classy looks of the Clevo and a couple extra ports won me over (though I would've had a 2 year warranty with the MSI). I don't think I would've felt bad about either purchase, so instead I'm hoping I'll be quite happy with this one. It should be a serious upgrade over my current old MSI.

    I eagerly await its arrival.

    Oh hi folks

I bought this: Multicom Kunshan P170S 17.3" Full-HD Matt Intel Core i7-4700MQ, 16GB, 240GB SSD + 750GB Hdd, GeForce GTX 780M 4GB, DVDRW, Uten operativsystem / MULTICOM (P170SM) a little while ago, and have been very happy with it. The fans do make noise, but I'm not very bothered by that.

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 i'm getting an error on first boot though:

Your PC ran into an error and needs to restart blabla, ACPI_BIOS_ERROR.. Something like that.

I've looked at the minidump files from windows, and they say the problem is from acpi.sys.

I've looked in the BIOS for settings related to ACPI, but there's nothing. In fact there's very very few settings I can alter in my BIOS. I dunno if it's the stock Clevo BIOS, or if Multicom has made their own crappy one or what, but the BIOS is pretty much next to useless.

So my question: Can anyone point me to a good, safe, reliable BIOS for the P170SM? I'm assuming they all have the same motherboard and I can use BIOS'es for other brands (Sager, etc) right?

    Thanks

    hi folks,

as of today i collected all items i know of to bring a p170sm to live: got the barebone (with pre-installed wifi and gfx770), an i7 4800mq and some corsair cl9 4gb 1600MHz ram. everything was installed and now i´m expecting at least a sign of life but i´ve got no luck. the box just shows the two led in steady orange in the front. if i try to power it up, the right led flashes green twice and goes back to orange. no fan going up, screen remains dark and no beeping.

does any of you system integrators know what it means, when the led flashes green twice after power on? the manual i found in an earlier post in here is of no help. i also know *now* the board doesn´t arrange too well with cl9 ram, but at least the bios should come up right?

last to say, i´m about to be happy to join the clevo p17x club :)

    ps: how´s hardware support of the p170 with debian/ubuntu ? ^^

    big up

    edit:
the battery led switched to green after a while so the orange led i mentioned before is the ac/power led. i learnt that it does not matter if i have the cpu and or ram installed, the ac/power led just blinks green twice, when i press the power button, going back to orange and no POST or something. the dGPU icon near the power button flashes white for half a second as well, when i push the power button. i hope, this does not mean that the nvidia card makes trouble... hoping for a hint here

Damn, cant edit my post, sorry for double post, but i wanted to ask you handsome anglo-americans owners:

If i wanted the latest drivers for my clevo P177SM, does it really matter whether i get them from Sager, Pro-Star, Eurocom, Schenker, Pwn PCS? What i mean to say in my best English football manager speak: isnt all the same at the end of the day? As long as the component is the same e.g. a factory touchpad or a graphics card, is there really any difference?

I just got my new Sager NP8270, and I'm trying to install both Linux and Windows 7 in UEFI mode (for dual boot). Linux seems fairly happy with the UEFI (I don't have a true bootloader installed for it quite yet, but running the kernel directly as a .efi executable from shellx64.efi works just fine). However, when attempting to install Windows 7 in UEFI mode, the laptop hangs during the "Starting Windows" animation. Does anyone know how to work around this? (Note: installing in legacy mode is not an option, as I want GPT partitioning for Linux and Windows 7 does not support that in legacy BIOS mode).

Hi, you may find something helpful in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/416916-clevo-bios-thread.html

But I am really wondering if Multicom is flashing their own BIOS, because I am going to purchase P170SM from them too. And I wouldn't like to have some lousy BIOS with few options.

Can you possibly find this out for sure? (I assume you have full support as a customer)

Sure, you can remove them. But when the time comes to repaste, you're going to regret removing them.

That's because you have to use those stickers to pull up the heatsink.

Frickin' computers. So I innocently click the update driver software on device manager for 'Atheros Killer Wireless Bluetooth' and it updates etc. Then I see that it disappears from device manager upon restart and is broken. So I try and locate driver from disk. Nope. Apparently no device can be found. So I try and download drivers from Atheros Killer Wireless website. Nope. Website server is down. So I try and download drivers from elsewhere and install those. Nope. Cannot install as device already detected. So I try and perform a system restore. Nope. Doesn't work. Anti-virus installed. So I uninstall anti-virus and try again. Nope. Does not restore driver. So I try and undo system restore. Nope. Anti-virus blocks it. So I try and uninstall anti-virus. Nope. Nothing happens, anti-virus installation is now corrupt. So I try and refresh Windows 8. Nope. Files missing, please install recovery media. So I install recovery media. Nope. Files missing, please install recovery media. So I perform system reset. Nope. Files missing, please install recovery media. So I try and boot from recovery disk and reset or refresh. Nope. Files missing, please install recovery media. So I locate Windows 8 install disk that came with laptop. Clean reinstall of Windows 8. God damn it. Computers can be so damn annoying sometimes!

And I still want to do a repaste today. But first I'll have to reinstall everything all over again. Ugh.

OK got a little issue when trying to install Clevo drivers. Insert disk and try and install WLAN driver and bluetooth driver but each one says that device can't be detected :(

EDIT: OK located them after a long search online. Wow. Last time I update anything through device manager! :p

    P.S. FN+1 works! Thank you!

How did you get the FN+1 to work? Also is there any other fan controls?

I believe you have to install Hotkey driver from Clevo for it to function.

I notice that maxing out the fans doesn't seem to change temps as the GPU fan was already running at full power in games due to my GPU approaching 90C. I need to repaste. I'll see if I can do it tonight. Hope it won't take long, though I'm not going to rush it.

Is it possible to turn off the volume LEDs above the keyboard? I know it isn't tied to the keyboard backlight, I was having issues finding a way to shut them off.

Are there any custom BIOS' available for the 170SM yet?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that you could overclock the Clevo laptops but can't seem to find any news regarding the 170SM

Anyone know the answer? I'm trying to decide between the stock NP8295 and the stock NP 8275-S. Any comments/suggestions?

I'm also curious if someone can advise me if this is true or not. I read somewhere that the P177SM sounds like a hairdryer when the fans kick in when playing a game...is this true?

I just got a new P177SM and its great!
About the led soundbar, I don't know how I did it but it doesn't work any more; the keyboard and touchpad are still backlighted. It worked right after Windows 7 install but after I installed the drivers it stopped working (a good thing IMO).
I can't install the Clevo hotkey drivers on windows 7, any suggestions ?

Hi, I just ordered Sager NP8275 (170SM) from xoticpc, a couple of questions for the owners, are accessing the fans when I want to clean it easy or difficult, and does it void your warranty? And I never had a Sager before... do they do a good job with the thermal paste? My last laptop had the thermal paste so thick it wasn't even funny, it's like the person that did it didn't even know how to apply it. Does applying a new thermal paste void warranty?

    Thanks :)

No, accessing components does not void warranty. Sager/Clevo acknowledges proactive maintenance as a good thing. That includes reapplying thermal paste and regular cleaning for dust and particulates. Only if you physically damage a component will your warranty be voided (i.e., careless handling or static discharge). If you have any worries, simply contact your reseller/dealer. They will tell you the same thing. :)

After a clean reinstallation of Windows 8 my Bluetooth device is not functioning. I have installed latest drivers for Windows 8 from the relevant website. I had disabled anti-virus throughout installation. I have also tried uninstalling, registry clean and reinstalling said driver software but nothing seems to work.

I have Killer Atheros Wireless-N 1202. The adapter is functional as it worked before clean reinstall.

The above are images detailing my issue. Device manager will not install the device. This is a nightmare. Any help very much appreciated!
