Your university might have cheaper windows as mentioned below (twice)... My school gives 1 free office, 1 free win 7 pro, 1 free win 7 ultimate, and my department (EECS) gives a ton of free software from MS (VS2010, win 7, visio, etc) so if your school doesn't have free software, check out your department too.

this is what MS has to offer: Student - Microsoft Store Online

I'd go through ms to save $20 and get pro (for XP backwards compatibility)

I've looked through my schools websites and it doesn't seem as if I'm going to get that lucky, ah well. I'll probably just get my own copy of windows 7 just in case xotic preloads it.

My laptop arrived today, and I'm a bit disappointed. My 'm' button doesn't register half the strokes I make, and the fans are much louder, under load, than I thought they would be. Aside from those issues, everything else seems okay. It stayed cool throughout a three hour long Diablo 3 session, the 95% NTSC screen is very nice, and I managed to install my OCZ msata without any problems. meh.

If your "m" key doesn't register I would send it back for a replacement keyboard. That is a pretty major issue lol.

I also ordered using a credit card and had to wait 10 days for my order to get confirmed, but i saw this one guy that ordered after me and got his confirmed 3 days after he ordered his laptop. I'm still confused on how xoticpc's order confirmation works. I also saw that 6/8 ---> 6/24 order and got kind of mad because I ordered at around 8:30 am on that same date !!

    We'll just have to wait.

    [OFFTOPIC]
i almost went to berkeley for eecs but didnt qualify for in state tuition as i only recently moved here and it was going to be too expensive almost 40k a year on just tuition.... got a nice scholarship package at wisc tho and very happy to be going there :) but yea my friend is going there for eecs next year that program at berkeley is great [/OFFTOPIC]

    back OT

any1 have an idea how long it takes to ship from clevo to xoticpc in nebraska? just so i can get a rough estimate on when mine will come...

in the meantime my laptop i was using keeled over yesterday (i think its a issue with the power input as it wont charge at all even borrowing a friends charger which works on his machine fine)
right now im on old desktop my parents use with a whopping 768mb of ram no video games for atleast a week :(

Haha yeah. Although I'n kinda glad. This laptop not being here is making it easier for me to study for my exams :p

And if we are both are on the end of the list, then Sager might slow down w/ laptop production. That means less faults that people are getting and whatnot.

    Let's hope for the best!

My fan is alternating between very loud and very quiet about every minute...and it's only when I'm plugged into my external monitor, hub, and speakers. Extremely annoying. Anyone else having this problem?

If there is still no official 7970m driver from AMD by the end of the month, I might as well exchange my laptop to a 680m one. True story.

Guys I just got this laptop a couple of days ago (7970m, i7-3610QM). I tried it out on Crysis and I managed to stay above 30fps with a lot of settings on very high, and some on high. I tried it again now, and it's now staying at around 25fps with settings on a mixture of medium and high. I don't really understand this.

I just ran 3DMark 11, and I'm wondering if these are the kind of results you'd expect for a laptop of this spec.

    AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3610QM Processor,CLEVO P15xEMx score: P5740 3DMarks

    Thanks!

awaken, do you know the gamut on that stock matte screen?

do others agree that there's no significant performance difference between the 1333 and 1600? eg. 8gb 1600 vs 12gb 1333

    1. It's usually 72% or sometimes 66%.. mostly 72% (as far as I can remember, correct me if I am wrong)

    2. I agree, there isn't a difference unless you need those blazing fast RAM speeds :).. you can always overclock them later on

It's been confirmed by resellers that it's 66%.

Yeah, 5740 is sort of around the range, although it could score a little higher (up to 5800)

For the screen.... you have to remove it and look at the sticker on the rear!

The 7.9GB of ram out of 8 is because some has been reserved for system functions - Don't worry about this as it perfectly normal.

I have a question as far as ram goes, to save money I am going with the downgrade, so I was wondering if I decided to upgrade later would all the ram stick speeds have to match each other or could I do 2x4 at 1333 and 2x4 at 1600 without any problems? Thanks

Why do I experience a bit of stuttering on doablo 3 when maxed, the only other program opened is HWMonitor

I have the 7970m And I set it to high performance so I'm pretty sure it's being used over the intel 4000

My is "out for delivery" this morning from a Fedex location that is only 18 miles from my house! It should be arriving today because from what I hear the "Ground" shipping switches to "Home Delivery" once it is local and that means they will deliver on a Saturday :p

Hope it shows up today; need to set up 64 bit win 7 Ultimate, BF3, D3, Skyrim and maybe Tribes Ascension or Blacklight Retribution along with Photoshop and the other regular stuff.

Need to set it up for my SSD properly too :p

I think thats correct as my ASUS used to borrow system RAM to boost its onboard graphics card memory. I'd consider those a system resourse as opposed to user resourses for software. I just realised that I've used bad terminology...

Yeah I thought so thanks redpop200.

I'm hyped! Have my windows 7 disk ready and my external hard drive w/ my games and stuff on it ready to go with USB 3.0 enclosure :p

Setting up the SSD should take under an hour to fully optimize and install windows then maybe a few hours to get my games/photoshop and system the way I like it :p hah.

Can't wait to try BF3 ultra and maybe Skyrim w/ high res textures haha. And D3 with some Maxed settings + SMAA injector? haha.

@ birdsonbat, they said it takes 4 days. I also asked my rep if it really takes 4-7 business days to install the steelseries keyboard and he told me that the 4-7 business days includes the shipping from sager to xoticpc and that the installation of the keyboard should only take about 20 mins.

    @Dan1107, agree :D

Killer is WAY, WAY, WAY better in 5 GHz frequency. It is pretty clearly a much better card in all cases. If you are really going to use wifi and may not always be near good quality signals (like anywhere but your desk?) then get it. compared to the cost of the pc, why would you cheap out on networking? Do the 1600->1333 downgrade and use $50 towards the $60 upgrade. (yeah, I have an opinion on this topic)

Was it the 500G (Version 1 of the design) or the 750G (version 2)? I read up on these, and they had problems with the firmware initially, and many said that the 750G (version 2) integrated fixes to the hardware design that the 500G had.

I'd be more lenient with Xotic, they are simply a reseller of sager so they send the orders to sager and then Sager does whatever the hell they want with them. That's why I expected more from Malibal, being the actual builder they should be able to tell me exactly what day and hour the laptop will be built, not give me some generic "It will go into production by the end of the week."

Xotic does seem to have some issues with processing payments, but in their defense they do hate credit cards, and I do feel for them. Credit fraud is so easy to do but for a small company can be devastating, so they have to go through all these hoops to guarantee its your credit card (otherwise the credit card company won't give them their money and the person who committed fraud gets a free $1500 laptop). That's why they give a 3% discount if you DONT pay with a credit card lol.

In my anger I ended up talking to an agent and telling him that his company sucks 0.o. But I don't think they're dumb enough to mess with an angry customer's laptop, as said angry customer may go on some other forum and talk bad about their company :p Plus I got the square trade 3 year warranty, so it doesn't really matter what they do, I'll get my money back someway or another if it breaks.

Yeah, I guess I'm kinda bitter for the excessively long wait times I'm experiencing, especially when other people have already gotten their laptops. Sometimes I forget that XoticPC is just the middle man who saves me a little money, and that I shouldn't get mad at them for taking to long to make sure nothing bad happens on both ends of the deal.

I'm just waiting for my laptop now, I ordered on 5/28, and at this rate hopefully i might see my laptop by 7/16. :D

For those people who are ordering from XoticPC, If you did not order the operating system, how did you get about installing everything including software for the keyboard and stuff.

Did you just boot up the laptop, put in the OS cd and install, then you added the other CD right? Does that have an installer or what?

I guess my question is to how you would install the keyboard ETC software, If you have to boot from the CD, or if there is an installer, or what?

I was also wondering as to what to expect when I actually receive this laptop. Do i just plug it in, wait for the battery to charge. Then turn it on? Or do i just turn it on immediately?

And where are the stock drivers for the 7970m? Also, did AMD come out with official drivers yet?

    Thanks in advance!

Not true, I had a delivery "out for delivery" one day from FedEx... the driver didnt make it to my apartment because he was too busy and because it was only a "home" delivery, he put business deliveries over mines... I gave the rep a piece of my mind. That's a rare case though. I hope... although FedEx ground has HORRIBLE tracking... it just say when it ships out... and then it's totally silent until it arrives at the local station.

I surf slickdeals, and the better price if you're not in CA is at Buy.com for $337. I'd suggest you guys use slickdeals, if anything, just set up deal alerts and instant e-mail notification and use your mobile phone's email (in the format yournumber@carrier).

Lol, so much for Malibal being first out of the gate. Just the simple fact that they had to leave these forums and start their own plus their snotty remarks and comments are enough to make sure I would never buy from them. I am pretty set on Mythlogic. Those guys seem to know their stuff and are also really nice. Two birds with one stone there.

Yeah dude when it says out for delivery that means it going to come today unless some issue happens. I would expect it today.

Although your battery life won't be that good even using the iGPU as these laptops seem to have low batt life even using only the iGPU... maybe it's the screen? who knows. the HD4000 is more than capable for a casual gamer, if that's the case, you shouldn't need to get this laptop, get one with better battery life.

what are the typical wait times for build on this thing from sager? I bought using xotic. I ordered mine on May 13th.. But the check didnt get sent and processed until june 6th. anyways it went into the build process i believe on the 18th. Is there anyway i can expect it to be built in the minimum 9 days? I am going on a vacation on the 7th and want it by then :( it would be probably more than 2 months after my order has been sent in! This is getting ridiculous about people getting their orders within a week or two after their order.

Call FedEx... and I fear you *might* be experiencing what happened to me (driver couldn't complete all his deliveries). Sadly they really can't do anything (ie. reimburse money, etc). There might be hope, i remember getting a package at 8:30 p.m. once...
