Well that makes sense. Actually sounds like a pretty cool idea; I also bought this laptop for Vm performance because I prefer Windows for usability and applications for school, but I have a love affair with linux for the terminal.

At the moment my i3 380m is just barely enough to handle 2 virtual machines and a slim Win7 install. I was thinking of doing something like your setup but with a usb wifi dongle. Hopefully I can get Windows and Vmware to pass it through, but I have to wait for the dongle to come in. I didn't think the setup I was planning would be made a lot easier by Vt-d, but it could benefit.

Sadly though my planned laptop has the base processor. The $1500 limit I set myself so I still have money for my university transfer was all used up by the 95% gamut screen, 6300n, and other small boosts like the 750gb hdd. Anyway if I can get the usb setup working or if I am forced to use Nat, the speed will be more than enough seeing as I do all of my downloading in the host os.

If the card supports it and the guest os supports the card you should be able to.

Damn talking to McDave and thinking about vm access to my wifi card is making me regret I didn't upgrade the processor. I guess I can upgrade later or dualboot/livecd.

It can show up as Lenovo's etc. because windows automatically searches for drivers and the drivers for the AUO are the same. Google and download a monitor info app or something; its pretty simple.

I don't think they use the same screens, just the drivers are recognized as the same for some reason. It came up in a topic on NBR before. I'm almost positive the 15.6 thinkpad doesn't have a screen this good though; I read that the newest model only has 215cdm brightness, even if it does have a 95% gamut and 1080p that is about 100cdm short :/ lol

Hello everyone I a, new to this forum and am looking for a college laptop for high power "cad" ;) (and gaming) after a lot of research I've decided on the 9150. I dont have the money for a ssd right now with my other upgrades (7970) and I was wondering if I got the 750gb hdd and wanted to get a ssd further down the line could I move the hdd into the optical drive and put the ssd where the hdd was without to much trouble? And also how difficult is it to install the bracket in the drive space? Thanks for the help in advance.

Yes you could do this easily; installing the bracket takes less than 10 minutes and you can find guides online. This is a good strategy I'd say go for it and buy an SSD when the prices drop; you will probably be able to get a 256GB SSD for $150 or so in a few months. Currently the lows are about $180 for a crucial M4.

Okay great thank you! Another question is I will have a tv set up in my dorm room on my desk for my ps3 but once I get this beast I will probably convert to pc gaming because in all honesty it is the best and always will be. So my question is it as simple as just plugging in the hdmi cord betweent the tv and computer or is there a program to be run along side, sorry for the stupid question and what is the stock gamut for the basic matte screen? Thanks again.

It is that simple you jjust plug in the HDMI to the TV and the other side in the laptop. And the stock gamut is 72% usually, some resellers have used a 60% version though. the 72 is more common now i think.

Also wow my laptop left New York on the 20th and last night at 7:15 on the 21st it was already in Salt Lake city Utah, about 3/4 of the way over here to California where I am near Los Angeles :) At this rate I'm hoping it arrives today [22nd], would be pretty awesome; I'm staying home today and tomorrow in case Fedex comes because I have to sign for it ha :p

Crossing my fingers for it to arrive today! Want to try Skyrim w/ maxed out texture mods / FXAA and BF3 also. Grrr.

Okay great thanks again. I believe I will be ordering through xoticoc as I've heard nothing but great reviews of them. On the wireless cards I would like to upgrade to one of the Intels either the 235 or 300 sorry if those numbers are off I know the cheaper one has Bluetooth which I won't really need so on the more expensive one does it just receive a better signal or longer range or does it actually increase Internet performance? Thanks

I'm pretty sure the 6300 gets slightly longer range, and faster max bandwidth, up to 300mb/s.

If you don't use bluetooth the 6300 is awesome.

I plan on getting a 6300 or killer wireless in a few months if my stock one doesn't seem legit. It's not hard to swap them out.

Haha yup I'm excited!!! One last question, Im a bit of a battery freak not that they have to last a long time but I'm all for the proper care of them and since I know this has to be plugged in to function with the beast of a gpu does it charge and then run off battery thus screwing with my charge cycles or could I just say remove the battery while playing games and run directly off the power brick as if it was a desktop? Thanks hopefully that made sense lol

So I haven't played with Workstation (only fusion on my old Mac). In fusion, the networks (all of em) can be set up in "routed" or "bridged" mode, and essentially are a multinet for the VM on the host network adapter. This works without VT-d. BUT, peripherals like DVD or mouse and keyboard, or whatnot are enabled for the vm by clicking an icon in the windowed guest os (using VMWare tools). Anyhow, the VT-D allows things like RAM and disk to have DIRECT access to the devices without going through the host os. Not going to make you not work without it (and the damn speed of i7 IB and 1333 RAM (and ssd?) is going to smoke even if passed through the host OS) but if you are wanting the guest os to perform as if it were a host os, VT-d is necessary. Make sense?

Please define the "event" that crashed the Momentus. I am getting the 750G as a data store (for VMs, so the cache should be a big benefit over spinning only) and I am pretty gentle on the machine in general, but would like to know how easy it is to crash it. I was thinking that MAYBE the fact that the drive has the caching going on makes software like "drop detection" that quickly parks the heads fail. Not sure. Thoughts?

Right. So I'm about to pull the trigger on a NP9150. But I've come up with two configurations, one from Malibal, on from XoticPC, and would like to know what you guys think of it.

Here are the full specs, though I'll list the differences below -

    XoticPC:

    Branding: MALIBAL
Build Time: 5-7 Business Days (Estimated Time)
Warranty: LIFETIME Ltd. Labor and 1 Year Parts Warranty with 24/7 Support (USA)
    Extras: Standard Black Carrying Case
Both are $1529 untouched. Both have 3% cash discounts. Both have $50 off configurations over $1500 (NBR deal at XoticPC). I can get another $50 off Malibal for being a forum member there and another $50 off XoticPC if I downgrade the RAM from 1600MHz to 1333MHz.

So here are the differences -

    XoticPC:
-1333MHz 8GB RAM (gets me another $50 off for downgrading from 1600MHz)
    +Steelseries Keyboard
    ~GTX 670m
    +Free shipping

    Malibal:
    +1600 MHz 12GB RAM
    -Stock Keyboard
    ~GTX 660m
~Black Carrying Case (doesn't really matter to me since I'm getting a new backpack anyway)
-NOT free shipping (a $50 value QQ)

Now here's the thing. I actually prefer to get the 660m because I am OK with compromising 10-15% on graphics performance if it means cooler temps and slightly better battery life, not to mention newer architecture. There is a possibility I will upgrade the GPU myself a couple years down the line anyway. The stock keyboard I can live with as well, but of course the Steelseries is definitely something I would like. And of course, there's the 8GB vs 12GB difference. Also I've heard that people like XoticPC better.

So what say you, learned denizens of Notebook Review? Do I opt for the better GPU and keyboard now or go for the newer GPU and more RAM instead?

I have an upgraded wireless card as well and my ping is fine. It's gotta be the driver. I don't see how they release a video card but not an official driver supporting it.

I did not get the high gamut, I got the stock matte screen and it is by LG. I guess the P170EM high gamut's are made by AUO.

I would put a big -1 against ordering from Malibal. http://forum.notebookreview.com/reseller-feedback-forum/670809-malibal-my-review.html#post8639362

Their reps are extremely miserable and not entirely helpful, just trust me and call Xotic's sales team. They actually sound happy to help. I've just got all these freebies from Malibal because of the delay that I still am going to stay with them. I'll just make myself happy by hopefully turning everyone who is on the fence away from Malibal.

Oh yea, and there forum is down due to mysterious causes that just happened to show up when people started receiving their laptops horribly out of order. One of the first to receive their laptop ordered a week into June.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll stick to XoticPC then. I can always upgrade the RAM myself and GPU as well. But the keyboard is probably something I can't do without more knowledge.

Don't expect to upgrade the GPU... it's doable, and probably easier then the keyboard, but still is quite complicated unless you have experience in stuff like that. Ram though is a joke to install, so are hard drives.

Honestly the 7970m is worth the cost, just go and look at a benchmark comparison of the 660 vs it. Its more than double I believe. $200 for being able to absolutely whatever you want the best for the next 2 years, and still viable for years after that.

Oh and I have heard good things about that keyboard, its supposed to have better button placement and simply just have a good feel to it. I forget where I read that though, but I'm sure someone has reviewed it somewhere

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone has experience with both keyboards? The steel series vs the stock. Do either have different key arrangements and if they do which is a better set up?

One was on the floor of a van which was being driven over a not so good road... when I came to open it up from sleep it blue screened and wouldnt boot... I tried to reload windows which worked then when it started to transfer often used files to the SSD cache it just blue screened again.

One was in my laptop bag when I knocked it off a chair on the train. Turned the laptop on and drive error please insert drive type message.

Never had a problem with my standard non-hybrid momentus disk and I fell off my bike with that in my laptop in my backpack.

I dont think the heads parking were a problem... I think that the SSD circuitry in this drive is delicate and doesnt like shock. I did notice a label on the last drive with a shock warning. I'm sure it wasn't there on the first 2.

My ASUS F3Sv took one hell of a beating in 5 years! Still semi works which is a shock when I look at the miles it did in my car, on my back, on bike, plane etc.

Ok most hard drives don't take well to being dropped off couches or knocked off a chair....

I thought it was basic knowledge that you put your laptop in a safe place and don't drop it or let it bump around like crazy.

Easier said than done when a large portion of your time is spent travelling or in places where somewhere to sit would be nice lol!

I know, however accidents happen and you would expect that as a primarily portable application that this type of drive would be a bit more resiliant to shock. My still functional non-hybrid Seagate momentus drive went through a lot worse accidents and a lot more bumps and never had any issues. 3 consecutive times took out a Momentus XT hybrid and they werent really bad drops.

Do you mind explaining as to what happened? I feel that I am of victim of this.
I ordered 5/28 and my credit card was not processed and my order put into phase 2 (XoticPc BTW) until 6/20. Almost a month to process a freaking order (Although an Xotic Sales Rep told me they could not charge cards until the new 7970m's came in, i still don't know as to why my order wasn't processed until 8 days after the cards arrived)

Anyway, earlier in this forum someone had said that they ordered 6/8, and their order was expected to arrive at their doorstep by 6/24 (i think)

I was kinda angry because this person had ordered after me, yet gets their laptop waaay faster than I did.
Just telling my side of the story, PM me if you'd like.

What are you all running for RAM? I'm speccing out NP9150s and was wondering if you guys were running 1600mhz ram or saving money with the 1333mhz ram? Does the (slight?) speed increase outweigh the money savings?

Thanks birdsonbat. Anyone have any whims on their screen choice? Glare or matte?

go matte unless you promise to work without any light around you.

I don't know why people prefer glossy (except tempered glass, as it's also aesthetics and protection)

Thanks birdsonbat, I would ask XoticPc to hurry with my order, but i feel like they might spit on it before they ship it (haha, jokes), or even the increase rate of production would cause more faults to be in the laptop (dead pixels, non responsive keys, who knows?)

Glare: Works best in a dimly lit cave with no light WHATSOEVER (or at least close to that). Like seriously man, I currently use a glare type screen right now, and every time i use the screen I usually close the blinds so that i can see better, but then my eyes tend to hurt after longer periods of time.

Matte: I believe that it diffuses light as it hits the screen(correct me if i'm wrong) so that it would be easier to work in conditions where there might be light directly on your screen, or just brighter light conditions. I haven't used this type of screen for a while, but i would say it's worth the extra bank.

Super Matt + Super Glare: These are for the photoshop-peoples, i know that they have 'advanced' colors that are great for color correcting or something or other. But to the average and maybe heavy gamer, i don't believe that it will make much of a difference.

BTW I went w/ the normal Matte screen.
    Hope this helps!

If you buy an operating system from xotic when creating your build does it come preloaded or do you install it yourself? Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit (64&32-Bit CD Included) + MS Office Starter 2010 for 80 bucks seems to be a decent deal considering Microsoft itself sells its cheapest student version with out MS Office Starter for 65, but since I want to add SSD myself and run the OS off that would I be better off downloading and installing myself or getting it from xotic?

I have a question about the two USB 3.0 ports on the left hand side, could you plug in USB 2.0 devices to them or is there only one USB 2.0 port?

USB 3.0 is backward compatible so you can use the USB 3.0 ports for 1.0 & 2.0 devices.

Lucky... Although I can get office and windows 7 for free through my uni, the windows disk is an upgrade only. :(

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible, so you should be able to plug a USB 2.0 device into all the USB ports.

Hey guys I'm finishing the configuration of my order. My last question is on RAM. Do you guys think I should get:

    1) 8GB 1333MHz RAM and $50 off (-50)
    2) 8GB 1600MHz RAM at no extra cost (stock)
    3) 12GB 1333MHz RAM at no extra cost (+0)

@penguin: Not option 3 unless you are going to be doing heavy video/photo editing.

Personally, I went with option 2. But many people have opted for the downgrade and say it works just as well. Either one should work fine.

You can install windows with an Upgrade disk. Don't activate the key when you are prompted to. Then restart and install Windows over the Windows trial that installs when you activate the key. This time do activate the key. I tried this and it worked like a charm.

Where do I look to see the type of screen I got in my laptop? I looked under the system devices > monitor but it doesn't say.

Also, why does it say that I have 8gb installed ram but only 7.9gb usable? My desktop just states 8gb
