Unless you have experience and a chip burner i would not try that route.
Removing the CPU and soldering a new one? It´s a lot easier to return or sell the laptop and buy a used one that supports Windows 7.
And you should make peace with Windows 10, or you´ll be limited to old hardware and lack of support in the years to come.
Also about this:
- I speak for the community who were scammed by the manufacturers (did not tell us Win 7 is incompatible) - This is not true, manufacturers have no obligation with you, they do not sell or report to you, manufacturers build orders for brands/stores. The point of purchase is the one who should inform you about Windows support. If Windows 7 support is something that important to anyone they should inquire before making the purchase. It´s 2018, do you honestly believe it´s a "scam" to sell a laptop which does not run Windows 7?
- N870HK1's fan speed is very slow and never turns on automatically - this can lead to overheating problems if unresolved. Does anyone know how to configure it so it's compatible with NoteBook FanControl? - Fans are controlled by the EC Firmware, unless you modify it you wont be able to tune the fans as you want. Make sure you are running the latest EC, CLEVO usually updates the fan profile. From the testing we do, the automatic fan profile is working very good, just like it is expected. Latest is: 1.05.13 -
The software available to control fan speed has minimal settings.
@Prema - interested in looking into writing a bios compatible with WIn 7 (if possible) for the N870HK1?
I would happily donate to anyone able to help me solve this issue, it's either that or sell the laptop. In my opinion, the N870HK1 could be a perfect laptop, it's sleek, slim and beautiful. The main issues I'm having are as follows; bios acpi incompatible with Windows 7, backlight keyboard is permanently enabled by default unless software is installed - full backlight keyboard rgb zones should be managed through BIOS. Fan speed control is very poor, also, only accessible through installing software (again, needs to be accessible through bios). As said above, I'd happily financially contribute to someone who's willing to dedicate some time into fixing these issues.
Anyone have any ideas? -
Scammed is a harsh word, although my nephew might have been when he bought this model on special offer!
Needless to say, this thread has been a second home the last day or two.
I have a new problem now. I noticed on the website that his laptop had the Samsung SM961 512gb M.2 SSD as an upgrade for £300. As luck would have it I found a Samsung SM951 to put in.
It is recognised by Windows 10 installer, it is recognised by Windows 10 Desktop but the stock BIOS won't let me use it. It turns up under NVMe but is completely greyed out. It's a pretty basic with no CSM options that I can see.
I'm guessing this is a BIOS problem, and if so, would the OBSIDIAN PC Bios help (Laptop brand is Novatech but happy to pay for the app) -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Is it an AHCI or NVMe SM951?
-
It’s a Samsung 512gb PCI express PCI Gen 3 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD MZVPV512HDGL, removed from a 2017 Dell XPS laptop which was upgraded after purchase. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Did you download the latest installer for windows?
-
Windows installer recognises the drive, Windows 10 recognises it as a storage drive but BIOS does not allow me to recognise it as a boot drive. -
I've been using the n870hk1 branded from Novatech for like 5 months now. There are good stuff and bad stuff about this laptop.
The best part for me it's the looks. Elegant , not a bulky flashy thing like the competitors. Also it's pretty light for a 17''.
My main concern is actually the cooling , those heatpipes on cpu and gpu are way too long and way too small, definately not the best for sure. Also , there is so much wasted space inside the chassis , the actual fans are kinda small and there is no direct vent facing them , just the big one above the cpu/gpu heatpipes/heatplate area. The odd thing in my opinion is that there is no heatsink on the chipset , nothing, just a bare dye.
With Arctic mx-4 paste , a cooler pad , a slight undervolt in throttle stop (-.115v) and no turbo boost ,in a ~22C degree room I'm getting about 75C on cpu and 84-85C on the gpu while gaming. That's a little high in my opinion. And I'm not talking about heavy load games , I'm mainly playing Fortnite , and esport games. Not even going to get into synth benchmarks values.
The fans curve is slightly off in my opinion, they don't spin too much untill it's like too late , and even then i think they are not spinning fast enough. I've been trying to enable the overclock fan profile in Control Center , but with no succes. Anyone knows how to do it ? Tried the mtlanguage line adding , and the xtufantable in oem.ini . Did anyone manage to get better temps in any way? Been thinking about the liquid metal thermal compound , apparently it's doing miracles , but im worried about it leaking during transport in a backpack. -

Overclock the cpu or gpu ? Does it require a specific program or I can do it with throttle stop for example ?
Well , apparently I can't overclock the Cpu at all , tried throttle stop and intel xtu but i can't change the multiplier. Got the stock Bios , can I unlock it somehow?Last edited: Feb 27, 2018 -

Did anyone know how to fix problem "can't adjust display brightness using hotkey" (fn + f8, f9). My n850hk1 got that problem. I already tried 2 methods:
1. Disable graphic card driver then uninstall monitor ...
2. add "KMD_Enable ..."
None of those works. The other hotkeys work fine, except the brightness hotkey. I even tried clean install the windows, still no luck. I can change the brightness through slider only. -

5.0001.1.17 is the version I'm currently using. It has no flaws , except the fact that i can't manage to get the overclock fan profile to show up.

I have been getting a VERY loud BEEPING from the MB.
Sometimes this happens under very little load at all (eg Chrome). Sometimes this freezes my system.
Sometimes hitting the key for fan fully on fixes it - sometimes it doesn't.
The system can completely shut down. However, sometimes it will happen again right after finished booting - other times it won't happen again for a few days.
I have returned the system and they replaced the MB, CPU, and GPU.
But it is STILL happening!
Any ideas?
I have seen other control centers, such as 5.0001.1.76 and 5.0001.1.88 on Clevo's other model's support pages - should I try one of those?
I have disabled throttling (if may never even been enabled) by going into windows power options and changing Max Processor State to '99%' - I don't know if this will do anything however.
I have had one BSOD with s 'HKKbdFltr.sys' error code. This is about Hotkey, which is the Control Center, isn't it?
System:
Metabox N850HJ
W10
Latest Control Center: 5.0001.1.74
Thanks in advance!
Any ideas @John@OBSIDIAN-PC ?

Take a picture and post here.
If you have an antenna cable going above/touching motherboard components it might be it.
Basically it touches the hot cooler and transfers heat to the mbo... Seen some cases where the beeping was caused by that.
Weird I know...

WOW! Ok - will do. Happy to try anything!
As you can imagine - format and reinstall, and replacing the CPU, GPU and MB and it still happening - it is driving me (and Metabox) crazy!
They just shipped me out a new Fan (which hasn't arrived, because they said that that is the only original part, and the RAM), and asked me to run MemTes86 to rule out whether it is the RAM. I have just run Memtest and it passed 100%. However, it was the Free version which doesn't allow me to disable CPU caching - do you think I should bother with the PRO version?
Am going to take bottom off now..... -
Notebook review will not let me upload images, so I have put the photos I took in a shared dropbox folder.

The only things i can think is a fan reporting the wrong rpm and the EC thinks its not spinning.
Thats a N850HK right? Can you check the BIOS and EC version? -
John@OBSIDIAN-PC
Its the N850HJ.
From the Bios screen:
ME FW: 11.6.25.1229
BIOS: 1.05.14 TMB
EC: 1.05.10
MB SERIES: N85_N87, HJ, HJ1, HK1
I've now replaced the fan.
While the back was off I noticed that the antenna wires had been resting on the cmos battery (visible in the pics in my previous post). Given what you suggested about unintended heating through touching other components, I wondered if perhaps this could be heating up the MB through contact the with battery (?). So I insulated them fully in thick duct tape and also put some on the battery itself to eliminate any contact. I don't know what else to do...Last edited: Jul 14, 2018 -
Edit! - I've located and flashed a BIOS update.
NOW:
ME FW Version 11.6.25.1229
BIOS: 1.05.22TMB
KBC/EC Firmware Revision: 1.05.10
I'm not sure if this is the latest? -

So far (less than 1 week) I haven't had the problem - But it is an intermittent problem that can happen randomly even when not under heavy usage.
Before replacing the MB, CPU, and GPU the problem started happening more and more regularly (from 1x every 14 days, to 3x a day!)
Before posting, I had started to experience the problem (again) for a few weeks, at a rate of about 1 in every 10 days.
By posting here I am acting preemptively - The down time and lost work due to freeze/shutdowns over the entire history of the problem (and all of the replacing parts and retuning it to metabox's service department) would shock you.
I have now also found and flashed an update for the EC, update: EC515_EFI
Re the EC and bios versions I am using -
Do you know of any newer bios or EC updates ?
I'm away end of this week for a week and so unfortunately will not be using the laptop to continue with testing - else I am otherwise using it 2-3hrs (minimum) 7 days a week...Last edited: Jul 18, 2018 -

If it's needed for work you should have a backup that can keep you running no matter what machine you buy. First rule of business IT. It sounds like an EC panic, some value out of range which is why they are replacing the fan.

Hi
I been struggling to find the bios for clevo n870HL, could you facultate it ? on their site they ask for administrator privileges. Im new here, was trying to message you but now I see I must have at least five posts.
By the way, Im from Portugal too, cheers -

Your reseller is the usual source for BIOS updates.

@John@OBSIDIAN-PC I bought Clevo N870HK1 from Dream Machines and I want to do some tweaks in BIOS, but it fully locked for voltages, clocks and multipliers and 1050Ti still at max 72°C barrier, can't go higher to achive at least stable 1,5 GHz GPU clock. Can you help me with bios unlocking or it's doomed to be a Dead Machines in a way of perfomance?

Hi!
I stated before that I'm not happy with the temps I'm getting on my 870hk.
I recently stumbled across a video on youtube with a guy that simply changed the thermal paste on his laptop and bent a bit those little clips that put pressure on the heat spreader itself when you screw them down. It made an incredible difference. I couldn't even use the cpu with turbo boost on before, because it would heat so much untill it was starting to throttle. Now with turbo boost on it doesn't go above 74 degree while gaming, and tops at 80 in stress test. Same for the gpu, the 1050ti just caps at 75degrees no matter how long I run furmark!
This is the clip I'm talking about :
I hope it helps !
*the miracle only lasted for about 1 day before going back to normal.Last edited: Aug 6, 2019 -

Hey guys, my escape key broke off (my three-year-old's fault ). Is there a way to replace that particular key? To be more specific, it's the retainer that broke. I've been trying to look online but I'm not seeing anything particular to this laptop, and I'm not sure if I can just get a key for another laptop (and if so, how similar does it have to be). Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Not any individual keys as they are not designed to be removed. A new keyboard should not be silly expensive.

The only place I'm seeing right now is a single one on ebay for $76, which although isn't "breaking the bank", is a lot more than I want to spend to replace a single key when everything else is working fine. -

Again, a single key cap outside of your seller is going to be difficult to source (regardless of lighting option). If they can't help you, you might get away with installing the less expensive white backlit keyboard from the same N85x/7x series, but no guarantees on how it will behave. Maybe @Meaker@Sager can confirm or advise.
