kevin, sorry we're all bombarding you with questions but i have one too - is the finish on the laptop, like the stuff surrounding the keyboard a rough surface? it looks like if you ran your fingernail down it it would make a buzzing sound. sorry i couldnt phrase that better

This is my first post from my M860, and I'll say that the keys have a nice feel to them, and they're pretty much noiseless; the spacebar, however, does click when pressed; it's not bad, but in comparison to the silent keys, it's a stark contrast. I'm experiencing no lag during rapid keypresses, and there's no flex in the keyboard. Man this thing feels solid. I also have it sitting on my lap right now, and the bottom is cool to the touch. Now to your questions:
I don't mind questions at all guys and gals. -
i know you must be dying to put your new laptop to work so thanks for sticking around and answering our questions!
-
Kevin, some more qns since u do not mind at all..
1) Any stuck / dead pixels?
2) Temp at the right side of touchpad? - this seems to be a concern..
3) The powerbrick actually has a fan???? -
hey dont judge. it may not be your cup of tea, but i love it, so its a problem for me. -
Thanks for responding Kevin! Keep it up!
-
2) It's warm. That's all. For me, I don't even consider it "warm", more like warmer than everywhere else. I have the 160/5400 hdd, btw.
3) I haven't heard it yet. I'm downloading 3dmark06 right now, so we'll see what happens while that runs. -
Two hours of Mass Effect; right palm rest is still barely warm, despite the temps. -
Did/can you take the temps while Mass Effect is in Windowed mode?
-
It's got a min max feature, so he don`t need to play windowed dude.
77C is about what I get with 8800M GTX SLI, so it`s pretty good actually.
However, try Crysis or UT3 and max details and possible resolution...and then we`ll see -
Ah, never mind then. Glad you're running below 80.

Well, if you're referring to Ad@m, that person's (singular) hard drive was making a beeping sound. As some mentioned on the forum, a bearing's probably loose. With recent reports of lower temperatures, it really does look like Ad@m's hard drive is defective.
-
Well... you HDD also gets quite high max temperatures (65ºC) and I'm unsure whether that is healthy.
The GPU looks great though.
Another thing that worries me a bit... CPU temperatures. If I'm not mistaken, the ACPI area is somehow related with the CPU. It would be interesting to have someone doing some Prime95 CPU stress tests to see how the M860TU handles it. Pretty much, those temps are the same I was experiencing on my M15x's CPU during gameplay. While stressing the computer with Prime95, the CPU temperature would rise and the CPU eventually downclock. This would happen because the fan was not able to cool down the CPU properly.
So... tests would be really appreciated. -
The GPU handles the temperature really well. The CPU is also OK. But the hard drive seems really hot but this doesn't surprise me when you look at the mobo temp. What's the verdict on the HDD temp?
-
Any questions? -
Wherever the ACPI region is, HDD is a bit high and CPU cores should be stressed with Prime95 to check how the fan keeps the CPU's temp down.
GPU's temp is surprisingly good.~
I wish I had one in my hands to make it a proper testing! -
I just took a look at HP dv5t benchmark+temp ( http://www.notebookreview.com/picture.asp?f=35709) and compared to this, the NP8660 does the job pretty well.

The CPU temperature is good is because the heat sink is closer to the fans. And the GPU heat sink is further away.
-
hey all... im a bit confused, wonder if any of you could help me out
how do i configure the hotkeys? i have no idea how to do this..
what is indeed the quiet mode and normal mode? is it only relevant for the fan? it only activates or disables this component? Battery last way longer right but probably it will overheat no?
by the way i read somewhere that there is a way to minimize the use of the components, specially the graphics card, how do i really do this? thankx -
Supposedly it doesn't. The fan'll just kick back into high gear if it's under stress.
-
I got my Sager NP8660 today and boy am I impressed. This laptop is amazing. Good news so far. The laptop had zero dead/stuck/owned pixels, and the hard drive is running at 52C while the GPU is running at 49C idle. I hope everyone who receives their laptops tomorrow is as amazed as I am!!
-
Gah apparently its arriving at my uncles in Montreal on Friday. I shoulda just ate the taxes what am i going to do this weekend . Prolly will hit up The Ex.

oh my!! seems there have already been a lot of people owned the NP8860!! i really cant wait for mine!! but i heard there were issue about heat?? on the right of the touchpad as stated in the thread review by Ad@m!! im really worried about how my version of NP8860!! 8/21/08, 7:58 a.m., idle temps while web surfing:
Very, very nice. It was 78 degrees in my house yesterday, which probably affected my readings; it's ~55 right now. -
Hi guys,
Congratulations to everyone who have received their laptops so far, I'm still waiting on the backorder on Blue ray and WUXGA issues. Hoping it will ship in early September *sigh* -
oh yeah, same here.. im also ordering mine with the Blu-ray... i wonder why the xoticpc site remove the Blue-ray option??
Im so jealous of you guys owning it so early~~~
but seriously, does the palm heat issue that serious??? i heard it is depend on the HD... im getting mine with the 500GB HD...hope it doesnt have any problem at all -
Received mine this morning. Frieslandcomputers is pretty **** fast, +rep to them!

I'm 39 minutes away from walking out of the UPS facility with my brand new one of a kind( OK, not) NP8660. sucky than i got to drive 24.5 minutes to home before I cane unbox it. but still beats waiting all day for the UPS guy, who usually doesn't get to my neighborhood till at least after 5:00 PM.
-
When did you order yours, Steve?
-
Lol.
Totally hyped on the forums here, guys -
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
I order it on July 24th.
and haha eleron, we all have reason to celebrate, a lot of people are getting their machines today. -
Hmm. I ordered mine from the same place on the 25th and it apparently hasn't even shipped yet.
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
I'm 2 states away from the Sager shipping office.
BTW, i just replied on my new lappy, -
grrrrrrr
i ordered mine on the 8th and they told me it would be here before the 26th... looks doubtful
has anybody tested the battery life with all the power saver things yet? oh and are there any more reviews out? -
-
No but it takes longer to travel further, so it's conceivable that someone after you in the line will receive theirs first because they're closer...
So... if you're in Afghanistan... You could've been the first in line and probably still wait until after most people have received them. -
I understand that. I'm just a little surprised mine apparently hasn't even shipped yet.
-
That's weird. Not waiting on BRD/WUXGA?
-
That's a negative.
-
steveninspokane John 14:6 - Only ONE Way!
Maybe they like me more, haha
-
Maybe they need to get clearance from HSD before they're allowed to ship it out?
Meh. -
-
What? I thought it was solely decided by payment order...
Maybe Sager reorders them... -
question: if I order the laptop without the wifi card, will the antenna cables still be there so I can put my own wifi card in?
-
entenna cables usually come with the card dont they?
-
yea, but they're run through the laptop's chassis, usually up along the sides of the screen: that seems like something that would be done when the laptop is initially being assembled at the factory so the reseller wouldn't have to worry about taking the chassis apart.... anyone?
-
Surely the Wi-Fi card is also put in at the factory at the same time?
Ask Eurocom. -
youdontneedtoknow Notebook Evangelist
that's how it looks like in the service manual, but I have no clue whether the antenas should be there or not if you didn't buy a wireless card.
