will do; i'm assuming there will be covers though, not just an empty hole.

Has anyone experienced a squeaking sound when using the arrow keys? I play tetris a lot so it might be because of that, but just checking.
-
One thing I do notice about the keyboard is that it is generally a bit louder than my previous laptops so can't quite work in stealth mode while the boss is sleeping -
It's really a minor flaw but there is some flex around the arrow keys specifcally the right arrow. This kinda bugs me and yeh it is kinda loud what a silly complaint. Im sure whoever designed this wasn't expecting hte laptop to be criticised for having a "loud" keyboard.

Hey guys, just thought I'd share a few details on my Eurocom M860TU that I received a few weeks ago.
My upgrades from the default config was:
T9400
9800M GT
Wifi 5300
Total price before tax was $1989 CDN.
I decided not to get the camera, fingerprint scanner, and blue tooth as I didn't need them and they were pricey. I also stuck with the default 160GB hard drive as hard drive prices on Eurocom are crazy! An extra 180 bucks to UPGRADE to a 320 GB 7200 drive. So What I did was order a WD Scorpio Black 320GB off NCIX for 100 bucks and I still have the 160GB drive that I may put in my PS3! Makes sense eh. Also, I had the default 2 x 1GB DDR3 ram. I was going to get the P9500 instead of the T9400 but it was $95 more on Eurocom . I use CrystalCPUID to undervolt my T9400 that probably makes it more power efficient than the P9500 haha! I use 6x multiplier at 1.063v (lowest voltage the cpu can physically go I think) for normal tasks, and 9.5x multiplier at 1.075v for games, video encoding, etc. Temps are usually high 30's or low 40's with basic tasks, and low-mid 60's full load. I bought some Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound (better than AS5 ) that I may apply and see if it the temps go down even more. I dunno what Eurocom put on there for TIM.
When I received my unit, I had a number of pleasant surprises. First thing I noticed was that I had a nice fingerprint reader-less trackpad. I expected the slot to be there even though I didn't get the scanner but it wasn't and it looks nice and doesn't remind me of being a cheapskate!
So before turning on the rig, I decided to take off the bottom panel and have a look. When I got it off I saw something peculiar.... most of the vent slots were actually sealed by black plastic covers! Only the small section in front of the hard drive bay was open, and another off to the side near the processor. Now I emailed Eurocom about this and they said they were confused too when they saw it so it must have come from Clevo like it. Since my Scorpio Black 320 is usually idle at 43 and rarely hits 50, I think it helps. My other temps are decent as well. I can always take the plastic off if I want to. I also bought a Zalman NC2000 cooler for this rig, but I haven't used it yet and I'm not sure how the sealed vents will effect the cooler's performance.
So my next item of interest was that instead of 2 x 1GB of ram, I actually had 1 x 2GB of Crucial DDR3. As 1 2GB stick was an extra 30 bucks over 2 1GB sticks, I decided the cheaper route and get a 4GB kit later, but now I only have to get one more 2GB stick. So that saves me a bit of money down the road.
After installing XP Pro, which works great on this system, I went into the device manager and discovered that I actually had a webcam! Free of charge! I dunno if it was too much trouble for the techs to remove or if they just didn't realize it. Even though I will hardly use it, I can't complain about getting free stuff!
So far things have been great with this system. The only average thing about it is the screen. The viewing angles could be better and the response time could be quicker but it's still decent and there's no dead pixels. I actually requested to John Shore at Eurocom to have it checked for dead pixels before shipping and he assured me it would be free of dead pixels. Didn't cost me anything extra either! So aside from the high prices of upgrades, I've been pleased with my Eurocom purchase so far. -
about the hard disk temperatures - I was wondering since there is a through discussion being done on the hdd temp has any one tried a laptop cooler that has a fan directly below the hdd holes given in the chasis. The single fan exceptionally manages all the heat comming from both the cpu and the gpu but some how the hdd is not covered by it.
So if we try pumping some air into the hdd area through a external laptop cooling pad that might improve things. I think it is woth a try!
If i am posting this in the wrong thread some one please guide me to the relavent one. -

Ill go buy a laptop cooler this summer lol for now if im gaming ill just open my window and let the Canadian winter cool down the laptop when I am gaming
-
But I'm planning to buy the cooler this winter because its Christmas!!! -
Quite awful pic of my bottom panel :

This that electrical tape supposed to keep it cool?
-
That tape was not inside mine; I'm guessing they forgot to take it out during asembly.
What kind of temps are you seeing? -
Going to have to bust mine open too, just out of curiosity. Never been inclined to though since it's always run great at reasonable temps.
-
Thes are my idle/light task temps without a cooler. The material is a type of plastic film and I think it's stuck on with some glue or something. I could peel it off pretty easily if I want to it seems. Eurocom knows this is on there and didn't remove it when they assembled the system. They said it's there to help draw air from other parts of the system to even out airflow over the mainboard. So it must have come from Clevo like that. Perhaps Clevo used it as a fix for the HDD heat concerns.
- Added temps after a 3dmark run. The CPU and GPU may run a little hotter with most of the vents sealed, but it could also be a lower quality thermal paste on the heat sinks. Also during the test, the fans rarely hit full load. If I had em maxed, max temps prolly would have been lower.Attached Files:

anyone run sisoft sandra on their NP8660 yet to see how much memory the mainboard can accomodate? is it 4GB or 8GB? I've seen different companies listing the max installable ram differently for variations of this M860TU model...thanks!

Sladeviper: your temps look great. Interesting about the black tape. Maybe this notebook has TOO MANY slots
-
Hey guys.
Really quick, could you guys (owners of it) rate this notebook from 1 to 10 for me?
Thinking of buying one soon.
Thanks. -
Ok guys. Since none of you could answer to me about the conflict of the M860tu with linux (Ubuntu , Mandriva ) , i send an email to clevo and they replied to me this : " We regret to inform you that the CLEVO all products not support Linux OS. Therefore we can not help you something''. So i send them another email and asked them to come up with a solution(lets say o Bios update). When i have an answer i will inform you.

I would give it a 9.5 compared to the perfect laptop and a 10 for the ratio between portability and power.
-
I'd personally rate mine a 9 as well. Would have gotten 10 from me if I can get a battery for it that can last say 4 hours.
-
hummm....interesting. I'm waiting for my laptop to arrive from Eurocom, and i'm curious if mines will have the black tape. I'm not going to lie, it is kind of worrisome to hear of this black tape which could potentially have not been removed when it was built seeing as how nobody else has reported the black tape. Atleast Eurocom has reassured you that it's supposed to be there.
Anyone else with the black tape?? -
is it better to have the same manufactur ram for my laptop?
because i have one Crucial and the other one Patriot,
same specs just different brand? -
-
Thanks to the ones that answered.
Hmm 9.5s and a 9.
Looks like i'm getting one of these babies this christmas !
P9500
9800 GTS
4GB RAM
320GB 7200RPM HDD
Vista 64bit.
^^^Best I can config with my budget.
Oh by the way. When I order it I'm just going to get the 2GB 1SODIMM option.
And put another 2GB stick in myself.
But what I'm not sure of. Is the NP8660's RAM 204-pin or something else?
Thanks again guys. -
-
Eurocom rocks!!
Saturday, November 8th, 2008: Ordered online
Monday, November 10th, 2008: Order processed
Wednesday, November 13th, 2008: Order received!!!
This is just incredible! I wasn't expecting them to be so ridiculously fast!
Eurocom +1!!! -
Thanks Livesoft.
Yeah I'm going to go with the one 2GB one stick in it.
In the options of RAM it says 2GB 1SODIMM and 2GB 2SODIMMs.
I choose the 1SODIMM right? a sodimm is a "stick" of ram?
Thanks.
Congrats AlyH. That is really fast. -
I'd rate this thing a solid 9.
The only problem I have with it is that the exterior is a fingerprint magnet, and I actually have a semi-permanent spot where my palm rests on it now (yeah, I don't type properly, and no, I don't have carpal tunnel, screw you guys xD).
Btw, anyone know if there's a way to remove that? It's pretty unsightly actually >_>... -
Haha, are you sure you didn't wear away the paint and what not?
Throw a sexy sticker over it and you'll be good! -
-
Anyone want to confirm that with us? (I don't underestimate you're thought at all Livesoft, and appreciate you're help a bunch, but you said I Think So, so just want it confirmed so I don't end up having 1 slot for RAM or something in the system lol) -
Well I never ordered a laptop with that choice so I don't want to say anything wrong. But it seems obvious an SO-DIMM is one stick of RAM ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SO-DIMM). Simply notice that you spell 1 SODIMM (no S), 2 SODIMM S
-
And I did spell it without an S, lol? -
I actually took all the stickers off it xD.
I've been thinking of trying household cleaners... but yeah, abrasive stuff, don't really want to use it on a $2500 laptop. -
I have a spot on my palm rest too , stupid friend came over and played crysis all night because his desktop couldn't handle it . Now there's an annoying stain and I can't get rid of it .
One SODIMM = one stick of ram.
Might be a bit late but I would rate this notebook a nine. There are a few small problems I have/had but they don't take away from my enjoyment of this notebook. I took off a point because of the screen; my glossy 1680x1050 is painfully reflective out in the sun. If there is a way to change the screen, I'd gladly start saving up for a matte one. -
I use a damp microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints and clean the laptop exterior and screen. Works rly well.
-
I can finally say i'm a proud Clevo M860TU owner
I Have the black tape over the bottom over my bottom panel too....I had to install my wireless card as the resellers forgot to put it in lol! I decided not to remove it just in case it protected the laptop from dust and what not.
Could anyone point me a good laptop sleeve for this beast, as I know its thicker than many other 15" lappys and it barely fits into my friends XPS M1530 sleeve. Also would I be best going for a 17" laptop bag/backpack?
Overall I think I would rate this a 9, amazing machine, but slightly heavy for my punitive arms
Oh yes and for the sleeve preferrably somewhere in the UK as I don't want to bother with international shipping, thanks in advance -
Don't know about the sleeve, I though someone else already talked about this, saying that this fits in a 15'' sleeve. For the backpack, the laptop fits perfectly in my Targus Corporate backpack, which is a 15'' laptop backpack.
-
AlyH so do you have a piece of plastic at the webcam and fingerprint? lol
-
Can any1 post a link to the most recent realtek drivers? Been on their website but not sure which one i should dl'd and install.
Thanks
DK -
Thanks theriko!
-
I had it shipped to my parents in Montreal so I could take advantage of the 5% taxes only, as opposed to 13% to have it sent to me here in Waterloo. I should be seeing them next weekend so I will let you know! Stay tuned, i'm going to be putting a Eurocom m860tu review together. -
Thank's.
Gosh it's a pain waiting, and waiting, and waiting more.
And for the marks on the palmrest, pretty soon everyones gonna have to start wearing the cloth like gloves using this beast! -
Can someone provide me a guide link on how to overclock GPU via VBIOS like this guy done with his 9800M GTS here : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=318688
Also any CPU overclocking possible as for now for M860TU? I've got P8600. Thanks! -
What are the temps for the people with the black tape? And where did you guys buy them?
-
I know this had been asked a million times, can you point me to the best post on the best apps to install (monitoring etc..)
