    ***... wow thats hot.

After undervolting my CPU, mine has peaked at around 55 degrees while playing Crysis, no higher. GPU is hitting temps of about 75-80, and HDD is topping out at 60.

edit: just had Orthos running for a little bit, peaked at 57 degrees after about 20 minutes

Yeah funny that nothing actually happened. And I have no idea when it hit that temp but it couldn't have been for very long. I'm wondering if it was because of the main vent being blocked up.

Going to have to try and game again. Harddrive hasn't gone above 57'C in over a day though. And I've been doing some pretty data intensive tasks. Just need to get back into more gaming now.

But... what's your CPU normal temps? Even 91ºC is way too hot for the CPU. It should be downclocking around that temperature to keep the CPU's temp low. Have you run any CPU stress test with Prime95 or Orthos? (try monitoring your CPU clock speed with RMclock, which gives you a graphical view of your CPU speed and voltage over time).

I myself tried blocking the main vent, but not enough air was going to the heatsinks and thus the cpu and gpu were being stressed to hell, I wouldn't recommend that in my opinion.

Another thing I tried was placing aluminium foil on the undercover of the laptop where the hard drive would be directly above it and kept it down with some electrical tape. So far under stress my HDD has not gone over 50 C and I feel less heat (so that's less heat than warm) since then under stress.

I do not neccessarily have to do these modifications but I am trying them to see if something works for me, may just work wonders for whoever is having HDD problems.

I finally got around to installing that chipset driver update that was posted a little while ago; my HDD is now idling between 51-53c, a marked decrease of about 5-7 degrees.

Congrats, I'll have to try blocking the vents on mine.

For anyone else trying the chipset drivers, be careful if you're running Vista x64 because there are some issues with BSODs. Just FYI.

    Blue Screen of Death...

So...its likely to have a problem? Because a lot of the NP8660 have x64 running.

I've already installed that fix, and haven't had a single BSOD. x64 is stable as a rock for me.

Most Core 2 Duos are topped at 105C , at which point they should either downclock severely or shutdown.
I`ve never heard of any CPU hitting that temp so far. GPU yes, CPU...no. Unless the fan was off for some reason or the vents were blocked...

You just restart the computer and it should be OK. If it keeps doing it, go in safe mode and rollback the drivers. If you can't, try booting from an external device. If that doesn't work, reinstall everything :p

Actually force restart could make you lose data so back up and then play around :p. I lost a pair of HDDs like that and recovering from a broken ntfs partition is not much fun :).

I know, it happened to me also :( But when there's a BSOD, the computer should turn off or restart by itself eh? I don't really remember, I never have BSOD after Vista :p

the desgin of the notebook was satisfying guarantee, and it looks cool and sleek and to me is very sexy!!! Starting it up the first time was a bit slow, but after awhile it runs very smooth. i really like the front notebook design where it stated the SAGER brand.

The notebook looks and front design are also low-profile and very simple indeed. I thought of getting the m15x and the asus G50v but both were quite flashy with their design and i dont like that, which is why i have fallen in love with this NP8860... a simple looking notebook with a monstrous spec!! DO NOT JUDGE THE NOTEBOOK BY ITS COVER!!

At 1st i was worried about the HD heat issue but there were none to begin with!!! NONE!!! AT ALL!!!! even with the newly installed 500GB heat was only ever so slightly... or maybe i just dont notice it since i dont really care about it though... only a little worried :p

Every game i have installed are playing sooo smooth that it touch my heart that i was able to see my games in a much higher graphic :D

It was a good thing that i knew xoticpc or else i will get the price slightly higher at other places... they have helped my order for a great deal of time and i really like their CS, very friendly indeed (its like a pal!!)

my only disappointment is that i wasnt able to order it with the Blu-ray option since i dont have one on my desktop CPU, but after playing a few games and pwning a few noobs in TF2 Local server with high graphic... i got over it pretty quick :p !!

i thought i should do a new threads for mine but im not much of a poster at this forum and only leech to get support and latest info on this notebook, thanks guys!!...

I just like to say that if you want a good, no, BEST and future-proof notebook then get the NP8860 where it will satisfy every bits of your needs!! and if you want some support then post here on this forum!!!

Happy Holiday people!!! I know i would ;)

Except for that turbo memory is riddled with bugs.

Does anyone have it running smoothly with user pinning? If so: do you have 2 gigs or 4?

I received my Sager NP8660 from XoticPC today..!

But, I got the blue screen of death twice while trying to install Windows XP. I got the same error twice (a 'STOP' error)... my copy of Windows Home XP with service pack 2 is legit so that isn't the issue, but a copy I had of Windows XP Professional (which is not legit) had the exact same error when I tried to install windows the second time.

Edit = Stupid me, it was set to look for a Vista install.

Actually Turbo Memory V 1.0 was not buggy, it just didn't help much if you had 2GB or more system memory.

Now, Turbo Memory V 2.0 is altogether different. See my post at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3786667&postcount=12 for details on the big differences between the two versions.

Can you explain what this means for me?

    "Intel® Turbo Memory Technology Cards
Designed for easy integration into systems, the PCIe* full-minicard and
half-mini interface card are available in 2 GB and 4 GB capacities. The
PCIe card features: one Intel® Flash Cache Logic chip, two Intel® NAND
Flash memory chips in parallel, and supports Microsoft Windows Vista*
ReadyDrive* and ReadyBoost* technologies for the 2 GB card. The
2 GB card, with a one-time OEM configurable option, can substitute
ReadyBoost for “User Pinning”; while, the 4 GB card supports
    ReadyDrive and User Pinning only."

    available here: www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/turbomemory/316979.pdf

Also, why, when installing the drivers for the stuff, does it not include the installation of the dashboard? These are the drivers you get from the Clevo or Intel site.

And when you do force the installation of the dashboard(with the -UP command), the thing runs like crap.. the cursor moves extremely slowly, at least for me and a few other forum members that I've read.

For those who thought the brightness of the screens were too dark.

Right click on your wallpaper, go to Nvidia Control Panel, then go to adjust desktop colour settings.

You can increase the brightness and gamma, which by default are set to 50%, so have fun reaching your limits. :D

Woohoo! Finally got mine! Freaking slow-*** military mail...

The thing that sucks is, as soon as I got it back to my room the power went out. So I can't really play with it or look it over or anything, now that it's finally right here.

PowerNotebooks included like powerbars and healthbars and whatnot. I mean, I appreciate the notion but I would have just preferred they had Sager ship it straight to me instead. Might have gotten it 4 days ago. Still though, glad to have it!

Now if only I could get some light to look at it...

Sager does not do US Postal Service very well, particularly Priority Registered mail to APO addresses, and they only make 2-3 trips to the Post Office a month...so you would not have received it any sooner.

    I hope that helps :)

HDD temps seem in line with everyone else's so far. Haven't applied that fix yet though.

I think I remember seeing an option in the BIOS for the battery alarm. Hit F2 during the power on/POST stuff.

There's also a Vista alarm about power levels. If you go to the Power Options and get into the advanced settings by changing one of your plans and clicking on the advanced settings link near the bottom, at the bottom of the list is stuff related to Battery and alarms.

I just e-mailed XoticPC about mine... I'm quite discouraged.

The laptop has turned out to be a real lemon, and I haven't even got around to checking how well it runs games and the hardware temps. It started off with a dead pixel in the centre of the display and has been locking up far too often (all in very different situations).

It freezes completely: mid-installation, and while defragmenting (..?)
It freezes and shuts down: in-game, and then the prompt to send the error or don't send comes up before it logs me out and shuts off the screen. I can waive the mouse and log back in but it runs very sluggishly afterwards.

I ran chkdsk and it took a long while but nothing came up..?

Do you guys have any recommendations on what I should try next? I'm wondering if I should just cut my losses instead of paying the taxes and shipping fees again for a new one to be shipped back to me in Canada.

Left click the battery icon in the taskbar, click more power options, click change plan settings, click advanced options, go down to battery and find notifications.

You ship the laptop back to Xotic for repairs or you try to do a cross-ship for like, maybe the hard drive cause it seems to be the cause of the problem. When they ship it back, you shouldn't have to pay taxes as you already paid them. The package should be declared correctly, eg "Return to Manufacture (RMA)" or "Exchange". If you want to refund it, you can get your taxes back by filling the back of the invoice of taxes you received with your laptop.

    I there, guys.

First of all, let me introduce myself: I'm a Portuguese Computer Science and Computer Engineering student. In Portugal, there only two stores selling "M860TU based models".

I'm thinking on buying a new notebook based on M860TU model. Although, I have some questions I would like to get answered to get the whole picture about the "pros" and "cons" of this model...

The model I'm willing to buy has this specs:
Here's my first question: I would like to know if it is possible to change, somewhere in the future, the graphics card of the notebook for a new one. In example, making an "upgrade" to a 8800GTX or other. I've contacted technicians from both stores that sell "M860TU based models" in Portugal and both of them said it isn't possible, as it would demand to change also the motherboard of the notebook. Even knowing that the graphics card is introduced into an MXM slot. I would like someone to confirm it, as I'm not sure about this.

Second, I would like to know more about that "overheating" problem with the HDD. I've read several "posts" around here, noticing that problem with different HDD models, capacities and rotations. Can someone please tell if there's already a solution for this issue or if it specific for a certain brand or model list?

Thanks in advance for your help. I'll appreciate your answers ;)

    Então pá... Essa vida?

You can upgrade, those "technicians" know nothing. But the "thumbs up" rule is: Buy the best GPU you can as that is one of the most difficult things to upgrade.

The HDD's overheating was a bit hyped. Most of the people do not have a real problem.

I would also advise you to have a look around other European Clevo Resellers.
You have Kobalt (UK), MyCizmo (or something like this) in Italy, etc...
Have a look on the Clevo Resellers guide around the forum, for a vast list of resellers in Europe.

Most of this resellers will ship to Portugal and will pay for shipping in case you have a problem with your laptop. I think it would be better for you, as those guys over there do not seem to know that much about "customized laptops".

PM me if you need any more info.
    Ah... Benvindo! ;)

What?? they have some 9600GS in that beast? Doesn't worth it in my opinion, get a Dell XPS m1530 in that case or Sager NP2096 exept if its cheaper.

About the hard drive, it really depends on how your reseller puts the hard drive, whetever he separate the HDD from the mobo. Also, from what I have been going on lately, it seems that Seagate or WD hard drive are more reliable and have less tendency to run hot. The 5400rpm is safer but its not guarantee to not run hot. To solve this, people have changed a bit the back panel or made some holes and undervolt the CPU, which seems a priori to give some good results. The hard drive doesn't really overheat, it just runs hot, hotter than most of the laptops. There's no solution now because there's not really a problem.

About the GPU upgrade, I don't know, you should be able to upgrade but I'm really not sure. Get the 9800M GT and you'll be happy with that. :)

Download the driver update from this Link, and you shouldn't have any temperature issues.
