I've been using this machine for the majority of the past semester and will continue to use it throughout the next two semesters, or three. I find it just as mobile as my two older laptops. When configured correctly, you can get around 150 minutes of battery time with a QX9300 and an undervolted GTX 280M. You can imagine how much longer if the CPU was undervolted too. Just make sure you activate silent mode when you are in a smaller class since that CPU fan can really p*ss some people off.

Having a machine that can swallow all my MATLAB arrays and all my other engineering apps is a godsend. The WUXGA screen gives you plenty of desktop real estate for tiling up multiple windows. It is a true mobile workstation. Though if you still want similar capabilities but in a more portable package, the M860TU would be your next choice.

I am going to go to college as an electrical engineering major and been trying to decide between the M570ETU and M860TU for some time now. I've been having doubts about buying the M570 for school but this post drove most of it away.

Also have you been taking this to class regularly? Did you have any difficulties at all?

And theres no heating problem with m570etu right? I heard about HDD getting hot in M860etu and I don't want any heating problems while gaming or using the laptop for a long time.

When I used to live on campus, I frequently brought my notebook with me as I did not need to take along any of my engineering books. For the times that I did not need it, I guess I could say that I would go with a more portable solution, which is why I am waiting for Clevo to release their M811L netbook. From this semester on, I won't be living on campus anymore since I bought a condo and will most likely be taking the bus to school. I'm not saying that the M570TU is clunky or anything; I'd still pick it again over the M860TU for school. But the M570TU is sometimes too much cowbell for those days when I only need to type up notes or a few papers, you know what I mean? However, when it's crunch time during midterms of finals, I'd take my M570TU along with me as nothing can beat having a large workstation while studying at your favorite spot such as a coffeeshop.

Both the M570TU and M860TU do not have heating problems when used for schoolwork. On both systems, as long as you properly install the drivers, there is nothing to worry about. It is ~80*F right now and I am only using a passive notebook cooler. My HDD never exceeds 48*C and I have been thrashing my hard drive with torrents since last night.

For M860TU users, a good remedy is to install a heatsink onto the hard drive as it does not have one like the M570TU. Purchase a 2mm thick aluminium or copper sheet and cut it to the size of the underside of the hard drive. Stick it on with thermal tape and you got yourself a cooler hard drive. It probably won't cost you more than $10 to get the sheet metal and metal shears. Or if you want it cut professionally, you can always take it to The Home Depot and have them cut the metal to the size you want. I would do this with my own hard drive, but it already has an aluminium heatsink on it and runs cool enough already.

    Thanks for all your help

Now I am pretty much sold on NP5797 but I would like to ask you couple more things.
Do you have any suggestions for notebook backpack? and I was thinking about getting the NC2000 cooler but is there something better out there?
Lastly, do you have any tips on not having your laptop stolen in dorms? I'll probably pick up a Kensington lock so in addition to that is there other precaution i can take? I'd really hate to lose my laptop to some thief and I heard that its not that uncommon.

I use a Wenger Ibex. I think I bought mine for about $40 on eBay before. It sure beats out paying the $70 retail at Best Buy. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=wenger+ibex&_sacat=See-All-Categories

The Zalman NC2000 and NZXT Cryo LX are the top picks for larger notebooks such as the M570TU. Either one will do the job. However, if you want to stay portable, go with the NC2000.

The biggest tip for not having your laptop stolen is to use common sense and responsibility. When you dorm with your roommate, go over basic stuff like closing and locking the door before heading out. My past roommates never had a problem with that, rather it was me that was the problem, haha. Nothing bad happened though, I can assure you. I've studied martial arts for over a decade and people know not to mess me and my roommate's dorm. Though that is mainly because I still have a short temper that I am trying my best to overcome, and that I won't stop until I find them. But you still must treat your dorm with respect. If you're going to resort to a lock as a solution, I would suggest you hide the notebook instead of locking it down.

I was comparing the new MSI GT729's pricing to the NP5797, and noticed something lame... you can no longer option for the WSXGA+ screen, it's only WUXGA. I like the WSXGA screen for gaming because I prefer having the extra performance for AA. Oh well, just makes my rig even more valuable, hah...

Will there ever be another mobile Core 2 Quad released or is the QX9300 the end of the line for us?

    I hate intel.

No, there will not be another C2D or C2Q release. The QX9300 is the last Penryn mobile quad core.

    Why do you hate Intel?

Well, after all that they had pulled for "montevina" just to lead us like lemmings off of a cliff, I'd say its warranted.
I mean, getting rid of the fsb for a new line isn't any reason to cut everyone else with an fsb off from future cpu innovations 'period' - every current Nehalem 'perk' not concerned with the DMI could reasonably have featured on future core 2 products. Hyperthreading could have found a nice home on my own machine...
And to end the line so harshly, with a complete change in architecture is horrendous. They should have done it in a modular fashion - so that we could have replaced the fsb and some parts and moved on. Now, our best and only upgrade is and will be to an already year-old CPU...

Congratulations and very nice pick, lovetap. Be sure to get plenty of sleep the night before UPS delivers the notebook. I can guarantee you aren't going to be sleeping the next day.

I will be asking you a small favor the day you receive your notebook.

    Evening All,

I have been lurking the forums for the last few weeks and have decided to purchase an NP5797 with the below config.

Sager NP5797 Custom Sager Notebook (Built on Clevo M570ETU) Sager NP5797 Custom Sager Notebook (Built on Clevo M570ETU)

    - ~Combo 8x8x6x4x Dual Layer DVD +/-R/RW 5x DVD-RAM 24x CD-R/RW Drive w/Softwares

    - 3 Year Labor* 1 Year Parts Warranty Lifetime 24/7 DOMESTIC Based Toll Free Telephone Tech Support (Labor Warranty through Xotic PC)

I've read through the whole damn thread, with a few remaining questions :)

    1. Best processor for this system? T9900 v q9100 or even q9000; same old quad v duo question... the way I figure, the 5797 is compatible up to q9300, so if i want to upgrade i can, and hopefully on the cheap at a later date. I plan on using this laptop for 2-3 years, at which time I'll be ready to build my own desktop... Is there significant reason I should abandon this logic and go for broke now?

    2. If i don't go with the qx9300 right now, should I upgrade to SSD first, then qx9300? Which is more important?

    3. Any final suggestions? Comments? With the current config, would it be worth it to get the BRD? I'm concerned that I'd spend the money, only to have some aspect of the laptop (eg. sound) bottleneck the experience...Do i need to blow $99 on a sound card?

You all did a great job with the optimization info in this thread as well. I'm looking forward to getting at it.

Yeah, I saw your thread. I don't let a single post go by my eyes in this forum. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5175003

You have made a very good decision by choosing silver trim. Very nice choice.

Could you tell us a little bit about what you plan to be doing with your notebook so that we can recommend you a CPU?

If you like watching Blu-ray movies, then get the BR readable ODD.

Here is my stance on Intel Turbo Memory. You're already getting a snappy hard drive anyway, so I don't know if you will see much benefit from the memory card. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5146190&postcount=17

Silver wasnt an option over here tbh but I wouldve chosen orange trim over it I think the silver tries to hard to look like metal but fails horribly ;)

Soviet - I play Darkfall online, RA3, FPS like CoD, crysis, HL 2, L4D, etc., and would be using the system predominantly as a gaming system. I am not involved in any heavy 3d modeling, so that's why i've been reticent about dropping 900 bones on the Qx 9300. This is really my first foray into high-end gaming systems; I currently run an intel 2.4ghz inspiron 5100, 1GB Ram. It's about 6 years old, and runs just god awful. I've become a bit of an enthusiast and want a system I can tinker with as I work up to building a desktop from scratch.

As I said above, I am hoping this machine gives me 1-2 years. I do want to play the newest games (hint SC2, D2), but not sure how necessary a quad core is yet.

I can afford to upgrade, just not sure if i should. If someone can sell me on a good reason to go with the qx9300 now, I will :)...

Oh i should mention that I came from an HP HDx 18t, that I had for a few days. I think that rig is more multimedia focused, so it made sense with the screen and the altec lansing speakers that Blue Ray would have been a good investment... I've heard that the 5797 has tinny, average sound quality like we've come to expect from laptops...

Now that I think of it, my bro as a ps3... :) it's settled, i'll save myself the cash.

Also, with the silver/silver trim, is the entire computer covered? Is it glossy, or more buffered looking? I saw your pics Soviet, and your computer looks really nice... is that your own mod?

One last question - I have a WD Caviar black 1tb 7200 installed in a Rosewill RX385 enclosure - I've read some places that people get system lag when they plug/unplug their sata drives... Does anyone know if this is a consistent issue? I plan on putting all of my music, movies on my external and just running my OS/ 1-2 installed games on the internal.

The problem isn't the speaker quality, it's that they fire to the sides. If I cup my hands around the speakers facing forward, they sound infinitely better...

The majority of the computer is matte. The aluminum back cover is anodized, and will smudge a bit, and there's a thin glossy strip on the latch side of the screen cover that will smudge. Otherwise it's a fairly tough laptop with more of a business feel, it will feel like luxury compared to the HP.

For the CPU, I would take the stock CPU and upgrade to a QX9300 yourself. And that's it, anything else doesn't really make sense anymore.

Thanks for all the advice. I've decided to just go ahead with the qx9300, only because it should extend the lifetime of my rig. I figure it's an investment :).

I was torn for a second between the np9280 and the np5797 because the np9280 is pretty comparative to what I would do if I was going with a desktop right now. Decided I'm staying with a functional laptop config.

Is anyone familiar with esata lag issues with the np5797? Also, I'm looking to read up on partitioning, in laymen's terms preferably. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

As soon as the phones open Monday...Hope to join you all soon..

Who are you buying your M570TU from?

You can always buy the cheapest CPU and buy the QX9300 separate from another seller for around $500.

There are no latency issues with eSATA on this system.

Soviet - I've looked at both xoticpc and pctorque, which appear to have the lowest prices for this particular configuration... Do you have a preference or advise one over the other? RJtech for some reason appears to run about $100 more on average.

Also, i'm a pretty new to hardware, and have not installed a processor before... getting around bios is still a new experience for me... cpus pretty easy to install?

    I'm learning as I go :)

RJTech is a bit on the expensive side compared to others if you purchase a complete notebook. But if you buy the barebones and the main components seperately, you can end up saving a bit of cash, especially with the CPU. But if this is all new to you, I would suggest going with XoticPC, PowerNotebooks, or PCTorque. All of them have good customer relations and they all dropship from Sager in California straight to your doorstep.

Installing a CPU is like putting together a puzzle, atleast through my eyes. Your M570TU will most likely ship with the latest BIOS, so it would have quad core support from day one. If you want to make sure that it ships with the latest BIOS, you can always ask your vendor to double check for you.

Essentially, replacing a CPU involves removing the heatsink, removing the old CPU, installing the new CPU, cleaning the heatsink and the CPU die, properly applying thermal paste onto the CPU die, and installing the heatsink. Just make sure you're not wearing any fleece when you're handling exposed computer parts.

I assume that the BIOS will recognize the new cpu when it boots and take me through the motions?

I went over to HP and it looks like the sale on the qx9300's is done for now. Soviet is there any way to assume when prices might come down on quad cores? I'm now debating which dual core I should go with for the time being. If it's 2-3 months, I'd probably go with the p8700. If it's gong to be more like 6-1 year, I could justify dropping the extra $200 on the t9900.

What processor would you advise me to use, with the assumption that I will eventually replace it with the qx9300? Would I really be hurting myself if I go with a dual?

Keep in mind... I've never gamed or worked on a dual core. My only experience w/ quad core was the hdx18t w/ qx9300, which I had and returned after 7 days. I'm not sure what to expect :).

The price of the QX9300 isn't going to go down anytime soon with the new Alienware M15x around the corner. I would suggest buying an ES QX9300 at around $500.

But if you insist on getting a lower CPU first before you upgrade later, then I'd go with the base P8700.

Hi all...new here but I've had my NP5797 for almost a year and a half now. It seems something is really screwed up with my power jack. I noticed that lately, when the laptop is on and more so if I am gaming, that it gets extremely hot. To the point that it is melting the surrounding area.

What the hell is going on with it and how do I fix it?

I have a Sager 5796 that I bought from XoticPC last year. Can someone please link me to the latest BIOS update?

Also, is it possible to upgrade the 5796's motherboard to a 5797 motherboard?

Thanks for the super fast response, Soviet Sunrise. I wonder why the Clevo BIOS files don't all use the same naming convention?

Dang, reading the M570RU to M570ETU mod thread, the operation does look prohibitively difficult. I can follow a detailed guide exactly, but since there isn't one, it probably wouldn't be a good idea. Then again, my motherboard is an M570TU, not the RU, so maybe it'd be easier?

Yes, being that your chassis is the M570TU, the upgrade won't be as difficult as the M570RU chassis is different enough to pose problems that need a bit of handywork to get around. But the process of swapping the motherboard will still be very tedious.

I may have the cash in the fall, so I'll definitely consider it.

Last questions for today... Are the next generation of NVidia mobile video cards likely to be compatible with the 5796 or just the 5797? I have a 9800M GTX right now and would like to upgrade. Since the GTX 280M doesn't offer a huge performance boost from what I've got, I was hoping that I could skip to the next generation.

Also, where can I buy mobile video cards by themselves? I don't see them listed anywhere on XoticPC's site.

As Clevo is releasing a new notebook to replace the M570-series, called W870CU, I doubt we will see any next generation cards in the good old M570-series.

The QX9300 and 280M GTX will probably be the best hardware you can ever put in a M570-chassis.

I think that for the qx9300 that's right, but not for the graphics... a lot of clevo are compatible with the GPU of the successor.

The GTX 280M in the W870CU will use the new MXM 3.0 socket. The W870CU can accept future released MXM 3.0 cards. The M570TU cannot.

That pretty much sums up what happened in the past few hours. Nevertheless, the real reason I'm posting again is to show you what I did.

The additional heatsinks brings the total weight added to my machine to 465g (1.025lbs). I have yet to test out the revision as I feel like I am about to pass out from sleep deprivation. See you all in a few hours.

    Hi Guys,

I am using Vista 64 and when I went to instal Java for IE it told me that I was using IE 32 bit, not IE 64 bit. As I use the hot keys to get to IE does anyone know to reset these?

In general, you probably want to use IE32 for web browsing, as there is no 64bit version of flash, so any site that uses that will be broken until flash 64 is released (whenever that happens...)
