at this point, i would settle for a bios revision. since no one has yet to see the full potential of the sli-9800m gtx's and with an over clocked cpu...i think we could actually start to see that.... mighty big if's though....

and as for the i7's if you get one of them mid to low range ones...your still in the same boat. new technology, but not quite the better performance as persay the 1200 to 1500 i7's (speculation of course)

well.. don't go into the future again.. if not we'll be talking about teleporting capabilities in a laptop! =0

but anyways, still the most powerful in the world and i'm contented.

I tried reading threw this thread to obtain some answerers to my question, but gave up after page 45..LOL...anyways, I am looking into upgrading GPU's from current 7950GTX SLi to 9X series. I know that my M/B needs to be D06 V6.x..where do I find that printed on the M/B? I ran CPU-Z and it reports
    Model: D900C
    Rev: D
    Chipset: Intel P965/G965 Rev: C2

Im in the same boat as you guy.. i've been in that boat since the 8x series... I forget where its printed, but as you stated it doesnt matter. you NEED a new motherboard if you want a new processor or a new video card. Honestly, do you RELE need to do this yet? What game are you playin that needs a better card. I know CoD4 and Orange box and Bioshock type games work fine as well as most newer generation games. if you DONT need to do this rite away, I would also at least wait to see wat the deal is with i7. Its POSSIBLE, altho not likely, the d901 will get a crazy new mobo to support that. By then the GT200 cards will be out too. Just relax a bit.

Core i7 chips use a new socket called LGA1366 and for now you can only use the chips on MOBO's that support the new socket and Intel's X58 chipset. Also they are only compatible with DDR3 RAM,but it also supports SLI. :)
From all the reviews I have read they do offer a significant upgrade in performance, up to a 15 to 50 percent than the highest-end Core 2 CPU, the 3.2GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9770! :D According to PC Gamer magazine anyway.
But like any new tech. be ready to break the bank for the unlocked Core i7 965 Extreme Edition probably well over $1000 right now.
I guess we can all dream about it for now.....sigh.........

I can care less about the i7 for my laptop, I am already running it on desktop. I just need to know where to find printed on the M/B the version so that I will know if I can upgrade to 9X GPU's without having to replace M/B.

I replied to their email asking how do I verify my current M/B version, but they have not replied yet. I took the fan shroud off and could not see any version info printed on the M/B, and I removed the memory fan and did not see anything there either.

If I'm not mistaken, that revision entailed soldering a new chip onto the motherboard in order to provide the display unit's EDID to the GPUs in the way that NVidia insisted upon.

FYI: to locate M/B version can be found on sticker located under the top DIMM. (Must remove top DIMM)
So no GPU upgrade for me. Guess I will be selling my D901C then.

So my 9262 just got here. Initial impression

    This thing is ginormous.

Startup seemed a little slower than expected, but that might have been the untweaked Vista.

    Configuration is
    E8300
    8800M GTX SLI
    4 GB RAM
320 GB 5400 RPM (switching to 320 GB 7200 once I have time)
    Wireless/Bluetooth/Webcam and all that jazz
    Vista Ultimate

Nah, next week. Don't think it's the HDD, feels slower than my 320 GB 5400 in my Gateway FX though. Did you fix your PSU?

Not yet. I have a bunch of games here though, but currently working on recovering files from my FX after the HDD died on me with my final projects in there. :(

    Edit: I'm d/ling 3dmark06 just for you John. :p

Did you give PC dreams a shot?

Find out how much it would cost to mail it to you, vs a new one at PC dreams?

I'm good. Somehow a bunch of files, system and otherwise got corrupted, including my projects. Thankfully I got an extension on them.

Definitely. The Sager models they have is more of "when customers demand" sort of thing, but they mentioned to me that they keep some Clevo spares, so they may have what you need.

Just done D/Ling 3dmark06, will post scores. Anything I need to do to enable SLI or is that already done?

    SLI noob. :D

Hmm, I also notice a tendency to get stuck on a black screen while booting up. So far that has happened 3/8 times. I don't think that's normal.

Good luck with it. How are you using your 9262 now if your adapter is broken anyway?

Edit: The viewing angles on the screen are really impressive compared to my FX's and D630's.

and you wonderd why i switched... the fx was a teaser and i wanted more... :)

as for the black screen. you can disable your hd's and let it keep booting and sitting for about 30 seconds to see if it gets stuck anywhere. or leave the os cd in and boot from it and run through the beginning install but stop when it gets to wanting to install anything. we are just looking to see if the os is the culprit...

so you have a fun trip. pulling out a different laptop when the battery runs down. also..get a 3 prong extension cord with a 3 or 6 socket surge protector. you will make lots of new friends at the airport waiting on your next flight. and guarantee your self a charging outlet every time!!

Yep. I'm thinking my Clevo will go into the laptop pouch, the FX into my Belkin sleeve and in the pouch. My D630 will probably be in my sling bag in its neoprene sleeve.

With the amount of stuff in the backpack, the laptops shouldn't be shifting much, if at all. Hmm, looks like it just black screened again.

By the way, do you get into trouble with the TSA with that many laptops?

Hmm, I guess I should be alright then. All the TSA stories aren't exactly reassuring me. ;)

The black screens really seem to be happening with reboots, but not shutting down and booting again.

Any place for updated D901C drivers aside from Clevo? They didn't seem to that many 32 bit drivers when I checked.

we really need to know if it's your os or not.

on your next shut down or shut downs. try to just click shutdown and let it turn itself off. then power back on and see if it still happens.

    Did 4 of each type.
Of the 4 restarts, 2 worked, the other two black screened and failed to load Vista.

Of the 4 shut downs and boot, all four worked flawlessly.

Just ran a set of 3 3dmark06 tests and got CPU temps of 67, GPU temps of 85/80 and HDD 40.

This was at normal fans, not full.

Incidentally, full is pretty loud (Fn+1, correct?).

then it's a software problem. meaning it's trying to reload the faulty software first. and a shut down reverts the system to a normal start up state.

edit, i have been waiting like 10 minutes for that to go through..lol

    also, yes..fn+1 for full fans

with vista the install is pretty easy.. and finding the drivers are even easier.

    they will be stored in
    c:\windows.old\inf
    c:\windows.old\system32
    c:\windows.old\system32\drivers

also if you have the motherboard cd then you can copy all the drivers to the drive. and do your install. wont take more than an hour. should you get the time...

and of course dtwn83, no problem at all!
