Guys, I just placed my order via my school's discount program with Dell.

Getting it through my school is so much cheaper that its hard to believe. I got a $649 up front discount plus 3 yr warranty, a laser printer and carrying case for free. I am not sure why didn't they include the tax though.

In fact, its so cheap I suspect they made some pricing error so I will just have to wait for their confirmation.

Thats a really good price! I can't manage to get one that cheap through the student discount. Maybe its better for specific school discounts...

The only way I have found to get an M1330 the way its supposed to be (T7300, 2GB, 8400M, LED) for under $1600 is to get it in Malaysia or India

Oh, I figured out how you get those prices. Go to www.delluniversity.com, enter in your school and .edu email ID. I was using the EPP program, which nets you an 8% discount, not the massive $650 it gives on the M1330 (still $1299 for the base one, but it comes with 2GB memory, 8400M, 3 year warranty with accident coverage and lojack). If these prices hold until September, this will definitely be my next notebook.

Well, Dell India had it with the T7100, 2GB, 8400M, LED screen and 160GB hard drive for 63k rupees, which is just over $1500. Dell Malay had the same thing for 4600 ringits, just over $1300. In the US, it costs almost $1900, so its a pretty significant difference.

wait, what? You're saying that the $1299 comes with 2GB, 8400M, 3 year warranty with accidental/lojack?

What's the cheapest price you can get? Mine was around $1750 for T7300, LED, 1GB, 120GB HDD, 3year cc and lojack.

You're telling me you can get something cheaper than that?

    Thanks

Just specced it close enough to that and it came out at just over £1300 so around $2600 US

EDIT: can be done for around £1150 just by choosing a more expensive one to configure to start with...confused lol

The jokers at Dell India changed the pricing again...
    a T5250/LED/8400GS/160GB comes to 62K (1500USD)

Do remember that the base config on Dell India includes the LED display and a 1 year complete cover and you can't take them off (though why would you want to?)
The T7100 upgrade is a whopping 8.1K (200 USD) and not worth it IMHO while the RAM upgrade is 9.3 K :err:
An aftermarket upgrade would be 1/4th of that

What kills me is how dell prices 'upgrades' like processor, memory and drives.

The T7700 'upgrade' from dell is $675, I can buy the freekin thing RETAIL for $540
They want $1000 for $200 worth of ram
God knows how much they are jacking the price on the 200GB drive.

They have always been stupid high on Ram, but now it's other areas too.
Dell needs to stop this pirating of upgrades and make these items much more reasonable.

No way in hell I'm paying $2800 for this thing. Nice try Dell, NOT HAPPENING

OH, shoit, inconsistent too! The machine that was $2800 yesterday is $3000 today! FU2 Dell.

32bit windows would only show about 3GB, 64bit would show all 4GB.

u need 64-bit version of windows if u want to go with more than 4 GB of memory so 32-bit will recognize all of 4GB (2^32/1024/1024)

You have to register with the Dell University site, they send you the $200 coupon code (inspiron only) in an email. So the cheapest you can get an M1330 from Dell University is $1299 - Complete Care (119) = 1180  The config I'm looking at (essentially, its the base model+LED+bluetooth) is coming out to $1469. And you get a free printer (normally $100) with this, you get to pick between a Laserjet and a Color inkjet. Its really an insane price :D

I don't see these bundles and also I can't apply my $200 dollar coupon to an M1330. Isn't it Inspiron only?

    How're you making this work?

Oh wait, yea it is for Inspiron only  guess I wasn't paying attention to it. I couldn't figure out where to enter the coupon, so I figured it was later on in the order process. Still, its a lot better pricing than at Home/Office.

For the better bundle prices, go to the email, click "Click here to shop now", click on the top "Start Shopping" button (its the one recommended by Dell for University students, not the 12% member discount one), and under special offers scroll down until you see this:

Click customize, and go from there. The cheapest you can get it is actually $1180 and I'm looking at one for $1469.

Some rich buyers will just select the best of everything and damn the price - so it makes sense to put a premium on the fastest cpu, the biggest RAM etc. The price conscious customers can go for a cheaper option.

Not to mention buyers in-the-know also realize that they can upgrade things like RAM later, so it's sorta a win-win for Dell that they rip off ignorant (but cash-heavy) buyers for their money.

I very much doubt it. On the Chinese site all Vista versions listed are 32 bit whether you toggle to 4GB RAM or not. As far as I could tell XP never really made use of more than about 1.2GB of the 2GB I have on this D610 but I think the full 2GB of memory was still useful when running Linux under VMware so I guess that the 4GB might be useful to people running virtual machines.
... and do people still create Ramdisks? What happens if you create a RAMDISK and then tell Windows to put a swapfile on it?

just wondering, if you buy a laptop pre-loaded with Vista and you want to upgrade the HD yourself does that require you to go out and purchase your own copy of Vista again?

Contemplating with upgrading OG 5400 rpm to 7200 rpm on my own but not sure what costs will be incurred etc.

You should be able to install your dell copy of vista to any hard drive..it's the motherboard (ie different laptop) it won't like you changing.

    Might be wrong though.

i have the exact same config BUT 160GB 7200RPM - did the same thing as you - however i canceled a 2nd time for this simple reason:

i called and said i went to drake university and they gave me the school's bundle package and look at this beautiful final price:

    .

and its not available at drake anymore incase people were wondering - too many orders

went from retail with 7% discount - $2380 to a much more reasonable $1762

What do you guys think about a 9 cell vs a 6 cell...is the extra battery life worth it sticking out.

And does anyone know if the screen can bend much more than 90 degrees backwards; from all the video I have seen of it, it looks like it has the same problem as the macbook pros; and this problem would be worse with the angle the 9 cell battery creates.

O, and does anyone know how I can just buy a single battery...in case I want to get a 6-cell and a 9-cell?

That's a personal preference. Personally, I'd get the 9-cell in a heartbeat because I want that 1/3 extra battery life. Even if it is heavier, an extended 9-cell is still easier to carry around with the notebook than two six-cells.
