Wow, that is an excellent deal, but I'm done canceling and reordering and dealing with them. ;) I mean, $1949 for a very nice laptop with all that stuff, that's a deal I'm willing to take anyday. :D

Nice deal. I got a pretty good one too.

    T7500 2.2Ghz
    1GB DDR2-667*
    200GB 7200rpm
    bluetooth
    wifi a/b/g*
    4 cell & 9 cell battery*
    8400M
    LED display + VGA
    Fingerprint reader
    3 year warranty + 3 year accidental

$1896 including tax and delivery. Went with 1GB because Dell wants $120 (or thereabouts) for the upgrade to 2GB, and I just ordered 4GB DDR-2 for $169 from outpost.com.

4 cell will be nice around the house, with the 9 cell for trips.

Didn't bother with wireless (DRAFT) N since it's a total con right now. I have a wireless N card in my M1210 and M1710 and they give totally crappy transfer rates. The spec won't be finalized till mid-summer, so I'll pick up a Wifi certified N card later. No point buying a Draft-N card only to replace it in a month with a REAL N card!

All in all I think I did well. Decided to go with the 2.2Ghz since this is a new laptop, and I figured I should have a "new" (never before released before Santa Rosa) processor. Psychologically it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Also that 200GB 7200rpm is VERY fast, so it's not just a storage upgrade, it's also a system speed upgrade in my opinion, and very pricey to buy separately.

How are you guys getting these discounts ?_?

Is it just the academic purchase program that Dell has? Or are you coordinating with your college?

I just called Dell, told them I'm going to be a student in college and I want the 12% student discount (because I got the 3 year warranty). It's basically the exact same discounts as the Employee Purchase Program.

I've searched through the forums/google, trying to see if there was information in the following regards...

Has anyone asked a dell representative the following:
Will the LED monitor receive higher resolution at any point in the near future?
    When will Blu-Ray be offered?
Will they offer a higher powered Videocard?
When will the c2d 7700 be offered?

This is entirely dependent on the LCD manufacturers. No LCD manufacturer currently produces 13.3" screens at higher resolutions. So basically the M1330 will only ever be 1280x800, just the same as every other 13.3" notebook.

I asked my Dell account rep about this earlier in the week and he had no information on when it would be available.

Everything I've read points to no. If they do put in an option for a higher powered GPU it will not be any time soon.

    Don't know.

I really can't see why you would want higher res than that. I used 1680 x 1050 on a 15.4" the other day and it was so horrible to read off...i cant imagine why people need them that high unless its for CAD and modelling etc..for which you wouldnt use an ultra portable anyway..

the xps is a good compromise between detail and real estate imo.

    I have a 14 inch 4:3 thinkpad T42p with SXGA+ and i wish it was bigger...

I'm a developer, and Visual Studio does well with having large spaces to work on. Still, I can live with just using an external monitor when needed.

Is the student discount specific to certain universities? Or could I get the 12% discount too, regardless of which school I am attending.

Hmm.. Nice notebook. I probably am going to order one this week. BTW, is switching from a WSXGA+ 15.4" to WXGA 13.3 going to be tough? I personally prefer high res screens.

Discounts on Dell elsewhere (other than US) are managed by haggling with the rep over the phone :p
    LOL

I managed a 10% discount on my XPS1210 that way ( and if you would remember, there were no discounts anywhere on the 1210 when it first came out..and mine was ordered right after its release)

Maybe that is the price for all these student discounts etc. in the US - higher prices for those who don't manage to get them.

It is super nice EXCEPT for the screen resolution... I ordered a Vostro 1400 yesterday after a too long wait for the 1420 to show up in Sweden.

It is indeed a very nice looking laptop but 13.3" and only WXGA does not do it for me. I hate scrolling and moving things around all the time. The screen is the most important thing for me, then performance and then looks. I now got the 1440x900 res screen for the vostro.

Haha, I like how the 3DMark tests are where the 8M series outperforms the most - just goes to show that 3DMark is not as indicative of real world performance as some believe it to be.

Here's the laptop I just ordered on 7-26-07.

    XPS M1330, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.2GHz/800MhzFSB, 4M L2 Cache)
Soft Touch Red Casing XPS M1330
    4GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm, for XPS M1330
Slim and Light LCD with Soft Touch Red Casing and Camera XPS M1330
128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS, for XPS M1330
160GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive for XPS M1330
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
Dell Travel ExpressCard Remote Control, IR. Creative Earbud EP630. Dell Support Center 1.0
    External Dell USB Modem
    8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive for XPSM1330
    Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card
Norton Internet Security 2007 15 Month
9 cell Primary Battery and 9 cell additional Lithium Ion Battery
    Fingerprint Reader
CompleteCare Accidental DamageService, Inspiron, 1 Year
Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)

I'll pick up a Logitech Bluetooth mouse later off of Newegg.

Okay, are you sitting down before I tell you the price. :D

Free S&H. Total is $1658! Depending what division of Dell you are pricing this thu, I think the specs above could get up to a price of around $4000.

I can't believe the discount I got off of list. Bumping the ram from 2gigs to 4gigs was going to be over an additional $800 list price. I don't know why Dell is charging so much for a little extra ram. A 2 gig stick of ram for this laptop lists on memman.com for $144. But, Dell will not sell this laptop with only 1 stick of ram; they only sell as 2 sticks of ram, therefore filling both expansion slots. So, I just ordered all 4gigs with the laptop after I found out what good deal I was getting.

I can't wait to get my new baby!!! But, it doesn't ship until 9-12-07! What's the long ship wait for? I can only guess these are sooo popular that it's causing this kind of wait time?...

I'll try to pull myself away from my new computer when I get it to post what I think of it. :)

Dell will not negotiate there ram prices....which means you paid 700 for everything else?

I work for a school and it was a school purchase. It's my new laptop for work. I just got a new account rep and I've never received a deal that good before. Plus, I only quoted and ordered one laptop, not 50 or 100. So, who knows, but I wasn't going to ask why I got such a good deal. I just ordered it as quickly as I could. :)

Flamenko, I didn't negotiate any ram prices. I just requested a quote with the specs I wanted and that was the price I got. I'm not sure what you mean by "which means you paid 700 for everything else"? The "Total is $1658".

Sorry to interrupt. Each time I have customized (for Cdn buyers), I have had a price of $1700 which is a bit steep but maybe doable. I am wondering if the Vostro 1310 (which is cheaper) is almost as good. I need the machine to be as Linux compatible as possible. I am assuming, I am safe if I have a fast cpu, nvidia graphics chip (8400GS is good enough?) and the Intel 4965agn wireless card. I don't need to game but would like the graphics chip to be Nvidia.

Do I have to worry about who is manufacturing the sound card? Should I gear which Dell based on that at all? What is the difference between the XPS and Vostro and is it worth the extra $600 to go with the XPS? I customized a Vostro 1310 with almost exact specs although I am wondering what the difference is between the LCD display. I think that might be the biggest difference besides price? Perhaps, there's a difference in sound as well? I hope to have most or all of the components working OTB in Linux and prefer Debian-based distros such as Ubuntu although I'll use whatever distro works best with the laptop. I can choose my preferred distro on the desktop but I just want to be able to use any component on the laptop.
