I'm sure it'll have some thickness to it :)

The image angles might be misleading.

    Derek's post reads.

First of its kind, MSI's GT80 Titan ushers the future of gaming by integrating a SteelSeries gaming keyboard with Cherry switches into the 18-inch gaming beast. The GT80 also features dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M GPUs in SLI, Intel's latest mobile CPU and a variety of other high-end gaming technologies.

    So, here's hoping.

Do you think it'll be available with the 4940 CPU?

Note: I do not know if its BGA or socket CPU. I have only seen benchmarks of it running a 4710HQ which will be too weak for 980M SLI for sure. But those benchies could be from testing purposes only. We shall see once MSI gives us the full detail. After all MSI calls it "Worlds first" real gaming notebook so they better deliver.
PSU is of course also very interesting for sure

Yeah, it's definitely interesting, but I don't care one iota about anything else unless it has socketed fully unlocked Extreme CPU with unlimited TDP/overclock support and 980M SLI MXM modules. The keyboard, display, and everything else could be utterly amazing and it won't make up the difference. I still wouldn't give it even a moment of consideration. I'm really hoping to find out that it meets my minimum system requirements. Extreme overclocking performance, serviceability of all components and future upgradeability are supremely important, to the exclusion of everything else.

This is obviously not for you then. I seriously doubt they will use a socketed CPU and it doesn't matter to me. It seems that most manufacturers are shifting to HQ processors, and this probably means that the decision does not lie with them, but most likely intel.

I am looking forward very much for more info on this amazing looking machine :)

As long as they have a SKU with 4980HQ that doesn't bottleneck the GPUs I don't care either. I will be using this machine for gaming, not being number 1 in CPU benchmarks :)

    Now:
What is beneath the big plate above the keyboard?
    How big is the PSU?
    How is the cooling?
What display does it have? IPS like AW18? 1600p? 4k?
    What sound system?
Does it have MUX like AW18?

Hold on... not so fast. If they do it right, then it will be for me. I think it's pretty snazzy looking and would be a nice machine, but there are just some things that I am unwilling compromise on. I will keep it at the top of my watch list unless or until I find out it is unacceptable due to BGA mounted processors. I can't drink that poison Kool-Aid, but I am hoping it has everything I'm looking for.

No doubt it will be slimmer and lighter. Looking at the hi-res images, I like the way they have neatly recessed the new keyboard, and gone is the X-Split/GameCast key.

We already know preliminary 4710HQ (w/ MS-1812 mobo) benchmark testing, which is quite impressive, but I think it's important to keep in mind, everything here is only preliminary. All we really know, is what have been 'officially' released, which isn't much really. Everything else is speculation, and MAN O' MAN, that is mounting..... a frenzy FAST & FURIOUS!

As to the processor, no one really knows yet, and if it's another embedded processor, this is due to Intel, and not MSI.

As to the price, everyone speaks of this, as though only one flagship SKU will be offered. Certainly there will be a variety of SKU's, making the GT80 available to a wider audience.

Want some speculation? Ok, here ya go.......

1.) The GT80 will not be available in 2014.
2.) Several SKU's will be offered, making the notebook affordable to a wider audience. Perhaps even single-GPU editions, offering continued MXM upgradability.
3.) MSI has focused on innovation, and the introduction of new tech..... ergo, for this 'preliminary' preview, the mechanical keyboard is introduced..... as but a taste, of what is to come.
4.) By the time of release, the appearance will become, less retro, and more stylish.
5.) To grand-stand the debut, the notebook will not be released, until other next-gen tech is introduced.....
6.) Perhaps Intel Gen 5 processor.....
    7.) Intel 9-Series chipset.....
    8.) DDR4
9.) Perhaps, all of the above, and more.

Ok, so how's that for speculation?

    :D

I guess not everyone have such high standards as you. From all your benching with Alienware machines I can absolutely understand your concern for BGA CPUs :)

However something I keep in the back of my head is that you will undoubtly be able to overclock the 4980HQ, it will keep the GPUs running like they should in games and in benchmarks, and Broadwell is next which will require new motherboard anyway which means Intel will not do any more revisions on Haswell so we have already seen what the top of that curve is.

Intel is the deciding factor regarding their product distribution, and the OEM partnering manufacturers are at their mercy. The current trend is socketed processors are on the way out for notebooks, and these will disappear as supply diminishes. :)

Yes, I have no doubt it will perform very nicely and do a great job of playing games. I am certain that it will do those things. Not necessarily higher in terms of rank or intrinsic value, just higher performance expectations and non-negotiable hardware standards. Part of this has to do with not allowing the tail to wag the dog, not only performance. They will not decide what I can and cannot mod, upgrade or downgrade whenever I wish, as often as I wish, if they want to sell me their products. (They means everyone that uses BGA mounting, not MSI or Alienware, any other single OEM.)

God please no. I need this NOW, ideally tomorrow :D
Yeah I think maybe they will name one "Pro" like they do with GT72 with faster CPU and who knows, better display?
I'm not entirely sold on that keyboard but I have heard that their Cherry mechanical keyboard is one of the best keyboards to get in the market so I'm excited. Plus Steelseries is working with them to improve it so it will probably be very very good
Maybe but it almost seem like they are ready to show off a finished product to the press due to all this big fuzz and that they created a own page for it. We shall see :)
The notebook will have a mobile Haswell CPU. That much we know. So that rules out Broadwell and DDR4 support since DDR4 is only for Haswell-E desktop CPUs. But I would love series 9 chipset with PCI-e support for the SSDs. Finally finished with SATA SSDs and moving on. :D

Really? How so? All we have seen is a prototype. We know preliminary FutureMark testing was done with the 4710HQ, 1812 mobo (HM87 Chipset), but how do we know this reflects the final release product?

I think this notebook will be MORE, than anyone can fathom for the moment.

Well, we can hand them the jar of Vaseline and bend over, or we can slice off something they think is really special and stuff it down their throats for even suggesting it.

Micro$haft has conveniently decided to listen now and give us back things that they arbitrarily decided we did not need any more. It would have been a lot cheaper had they not been retarded or taking prescription meds when they redesigned Windows. Ballmer might even still have a cushy job had they not pissed off the wrong crowd.

If there is enough backlash and financial retaliation, they will listen. This is in the hands of the sheeple now. And, you're correct. Nobody wants it. So, the million dollar questions are: (a) why do they not care about what their customers do not want; and, (b) why is anyone willing to allow them to get away with it by paying good money for something they don't want?

Unfortunately the mobile trend is everything embedded, and everything APP based integration. I hate it too, but enthusiast are but small segment of consumers..... and YES, most are sleeple, LOL! BAHa BAHAaaaa!

So, is the numeric keypad also the tracking device? I guess I did not see it well enough before and thought they had eliminated the touchpad. I didn't really care because I almost never use them anyway... thought it was kind of cool that it didn't have one. I wonder if it will be possible to order it without the dragon logo on the big panel between the keyboard and LCD hinges? I really like the looks of the keyboard. It has more of that nice retro/classic keyboard look instead of the uglier modern flat-topped chicklet-looking keyboards.

I hope they throw 16:10 in, while they are at it :) Don't know if there would be enough supporters that don't support the soldered trend, but I'm one for sure, and I have stopped right there with the 16:9 and especially W8 transition. I could've swallowed the 16:9 with the higher res, but that W8, hell no. Then again my 8740w fits in the same bag my 5920G has traveled comfortably in, granted it's a tight fit, but if it was 16:9 - not a chance to fit. I just like 16:10 SO much more. I'll stick with the old tech for the time being (have another machine in my mind for the next project) and then get an AMD desktop :) It is a sad thing, since machines like this GT80 do look cool, but they left the string pulling to the parts suppliers and forgot they have their own CEOs and stuff. All of them, I'm not pointing at anyone in particular, but for a few more pennies they forgot that they are the ones that can command the trends and 16:9 and W8 and soldered $hit wouldn't have happened.

No, not desktop... just something mobile, fully unlocked, in a socket. Not a crippled low-TDP BGA tablet-grade pile of crap CPU that has been welded onto the stinking motherboard.

Seems like most of the OEMs visited the same doctor and got a lobotomy at the same time. They must have had the operation on sale... buy one get one free or something.

    It's to far off topic.

Wish that keyboard was wireless though. Would make for easier benching and gaming. (Let me rephrase that) From a distance or on the big screen.

This works really great for that far-away distance... DELL OPU235 Black / Silver 104 Normal Keys Bluetooth Wireless Ergonomic Keyboard & Mouse - Newegg.com stays connected up to about 30 feet away. Really pleased with the quality, too.

But, this thing is a piece of junk and Logitech should be ashamed of having their name on it... Logitech K400 (920-003070) Black USB RF Wireless Standard Keyboard - Newegg.com only lousy Logitech product I have owned.

Not using any kind of nasty software with either one. Both work fine with Windows 7 and 8 without any extra bloatware added.

It would be great to see a 3K/4K screen but I would be fine with a 120Hz 1080p IPS screen.
The one thing I am glad to see is MSI taking chances with a new style of laptop and not following the traditional cookie cutter recipe most companies go with.
It seems to me MSI is listening to gamers and branching out with something comepletly unexpected .
I held off ordering a G72 just to see what comes of this so hopefully it will be relatively soon to release.

Does anyone else hope that a wrist rest could be attached to the front of this laptop somehow? It'd make usability a lot better especially given the thickness.

Beefy is the way of SLI, now isn't it? But this one is supposed to be thinner and lighter in it's class. The Asus W90 I dubbed, 'The Tank', but this one looks more like a slab of black marble..... ergo, I dub the GT80, 'The Slab', LOL!

    :D

I don't know, I personally like how we laughed about that laptop here :) But perhaps I just don't like that 2nd guy in a hat. He looks too stupid even without that hat.

Yeah they do decent reviews but the podcast's make them look like idiots at times. Hey everyone has an opinion.....

I really like that channel. It's just they are mostly desktop-focused and laptop coverage is very much an afterthought. They don't really know all that much about laptop hardware.
