Would love to see the power brick on this monster.

The notebook was so secret you had to surround it with glass and people were not allowed to touch it? :p

I also wonder what the purpose of all the area above the keyboard is. It doesn't seem to do anything

I think it would be best with a 120hz 1440p 18" display if they could get one manufactured. You get the extra resolution, it's not too small and you can use the GPUs. It would be hard for a relatively small run though.

I read somewhere that you can access internal components via that area, removing it as a single Lid. I wonder if that is true? It would be interesting to have both upper and bottom complete single lid access to the full computer.

Yes, the area above the keyboard is a lid to access internal hardware components.

Hmmmmm....... ya know, I have watched a lot of the Linus Tech Tips videos, and normally they are informative, but the GT80 segment was a let down. These guys had absolutely nothing more to say, than what we already know, and it was a waste of video time. They criticize the notebook's appearance, keyboard, and pass their judgments with absolutely no idea of it's components, or performance, and then they use the term 'Ri-Donk-culous' to describe the notebook. Well, what I really found funny and 'Ri-Donk-culous', was Mr. Orange Bunny Ears, trying to make comparisons with an Asus G series..... when such a comparison can't be made. I guess someone forgot to inform him, that the Asus notebook he was holding, doesn't have SLI, or a mechanical keyboard. Hey, Mr. Orange Bunny Ears! Instead of showing you're favor of Asus notebooks, why not make such comparisons, when they can be informed, and Asus actually has a product for comparison?

Personally, I do not find the GT80's overall appearance, particularly inviting, but I am not going to pass judgments based on this alone. What will really be important, is how it's equipped, how it performs, and can it do so quietly with good temps.

    :)

6 months? Probably not, because I generally tend to sell my notebooks, when the next great option becomes available. I love the GT72, but I have my eye on the GT80, and the 980M SLI temptation may be too great.

    :)

There is very little information on the GT80 right now that most videos end up doing silly comparisons. The sheer size and confirmed hardware already should speak about the relative price and performance it offers. Obviously comparing it to a single GPU solution will be ridiculous haha.

People hate on the appearance mainly because it is different than most notebooks. I can certainly understand that, and it does catch the eye, when you notice it isn't distributed as you know.

Personally... I love the design and I think it looks really good :) But now I am in patience mode because it seems it will be until january that we get any real info!

And Striker... you know you want a GT80 :D

They should totally make it like that for the GT80 Workstation variation. A handle, a simpler/more elegant finish and quadro GPUs for the ultimate workstation haha.

Yeah, I am thinking we won't hear much more about this notebook until CES..... unless MSI decides to put out some more teasers, from now till then..... just to keep up the interest. As far as wanting the notebook, I am intrigued, but I need more information before I commit. My last SLI experience wasn't exactly a pleasant one, but that was a little while back. We'll see!

Just to chime in on the appearance. I dont think that should really even matter for the market this notebook is made for which is high end gaming. When gaming I sure hope you're not looking at the notebook itself rather then the screen.

Plus the mechanical keyboard should be great, I have one here and at home and would hate to type on anything else. Especially considering how my I type each day.

I know this will sound pretty biased, but i personally enjoy the look of it. Maybe its the inner tech-hipster in me, but i like how different it looks from the standard laptop look we have nowadays. Someone mentioned that it was very similar to oldschool laptops, and im digging it!

Glad you brought up that Hutsady! I'm currently using a Func KB-460, which is a really great keyboard and the best build quality i have tested (better than Mionix and Corsair!) and it is very thin/flat. And have a really clean layout + pulsing backlight
I have only encountered one problem, is that the BKSP/Delete, would hang up some times/ get stuck down, it uses costar's stabilizers so i guess it would loosen up eventualy, kinda already did.

The one i currently got has cherry mx red, i have tried Blue, brown and black.. How do you rate between Red and blue?
Would i regret going back to blue? (black widdow, noisy and bad build in the first place)

Between Brown and blue, i did imo find blue to have a better click, like it felt more reliable in some way..

I am a fast typer, but i actually am a little scared on writing on the red as it is so easy to misstype a letter to much, on the other hand on black and maybe brown/blue, i would sometimes go to fast and miss a letter on the way..! much more on the black's tho..

    Any oppinions?

I would say this is off-topic.. but in a way it is not, so i welcome answers!! :D

Done! haha :D I kinda miss blues! Bluues ;) I have great hopes for the blues(brothers) on the KB-460, it is the most silen one with red i tried!

And btw, i think Brown mx was the right choice for the GT80!

    *drools*

Honestly, I'm more interested in what MSI is going to do with their GS30. Seems legit.

    However...

Most gamers use external keyboard and mouse already--so the last tough mobile area is the screen. What about a slim, 980M SLI "laptop" with a flippable screen? Put a usable keyboard on it for when you need it, and then you can flip the screen around, plug in your peripherals and go from there?

Also, I'm wondering why these companies (Lenovo, Alienware) are trying to make console-sized gaming PC's with desktop-grade GPUs that really aren't adequate (750 Ti? really?). You could make a super-slim, mobile CPU/GPU platform that would still beat the crap out of those (A SINGLE 980m beats a 750Ti) and all consoles in a much slimmer package. Basically this laptop without any peripherals, slice it in half and stack it.

Because a 750Ti is like 10x cheaper than a 980M. It has to be cheap, otherwise the machine won't have any purpose, which is to provide console quality gaming at the same price as a console + all the benefits you get from PC. Slapping a 980M in such a machine would skyrocket the price up to the 1K mark rather quickly.

Just found out CLEVO is coming out with the P750ZM/P770ZM series that uses desktop CPU's but with a single GTX 980m, a desktop CPU would have been a perfect combo for the GT80 in SLI.
Wish MSI used this setup, it's a missed opportunity to really have something special.

I suppose Clevo chassis allows all kinds of combinations, it's up to the builder what to offer; Eurocom mobile servers offer max i7 - 4960X or a truckload of Xeons in combination with SLI (2x 100W) cards.

True, but remember that this is a PC. Since it doubles as a console, you're looking at -$400/300 since you won't need a console...justifies it somewhat...you always pay for portability though. It would make a great LAN party setup.

I know what you mean, but really, aside from a 4Ghz core i7 4980hq, how much more performance can we really gain unless they go with 6+core variations?

But yeah, having the option for desktop CPU would be very interesting for such a large machine. I would definitely go for a 5820k version :D even if the external PSU tended up over 400W hahaha.

Agreed but mobile CPU's still might bottleneck the GT80 in SLI, a desktop CPU not likely depending on choice.

This would also seem to imply, Intel will no longer restrict MSI to the HQ processor, in this class of notebook. I'm glad somebody finally woke-up! :)
