Well the question states taking into account the currently available products from both end. I take it that the latest AVAILABLE MSI is the GT72 2QE DOMINATOR PRO ( 980m ) and the Latest M18 being sold at the moment. Leaving aside the ( this is MSI forum or Alienware forum ) in all Honesty which one outperforms the other in most of the aspects. ( The MSI catches my eyes because the MXM is upgradable ) You can bring into the equation the Gigabyte and the Aorus and the ASUS too.

First the M18 only offers the 880M , only HIDevolution or something like that offers the 980M SLI, currently I would take the m18 since it offers a pls screen and sli.
Overall the gt72 loses compared to a M18 unless you want a 17" -

Since you seem inclined to the GT72, I recommend find the specific model which most appeals, and is within your price range. Then find the most comparable AW model, and compare specs, warranty, and price, and then see how you are inclined. Once you have done this, and if you still have questions, then go to the specific thread for the model in question.
Simple!

If you dont have the knowledge its close to impossible to cross-reference the aspects. You go to a doctor to see whats wrong with you and you trust his word ( sometimes ). Same if you go to any professional thats why they are professionals and thats why I came to you folks regardless of the forum I posted in. I would take your advices since budget is not an issue for me.

Hey, when choosing a notebook, it is ALWAYS different strokes, for different folks, so it does require a little bit of work on your part. What is often one persons 'no-brainer', can be another's 'deal-breaker'.
I can tell you the GT72 is pretty AWESOME, and is definitely a performer..... I love it. Have you read post #1 & #2 HERE? Also, take a look at this review, HERE! If a gaming notebook is your cup of tea, and I placed this notebook in front of you..... You'd Like!

Yes I saw those links and thats where I say for ME they look the same, the difference I saw is the better cooling system on the MSI and that the MXM is upgradable to future specs. But thats all i can notice. You guys can see the soul out of all of them.
So take away the personal liking away, and put them next to each other The latest MSI and the latest AW. Comparing power, speed, screen, resolution, and the other perks which one would you say, this one wins?
Ive been an AW since day one, but if there is something better I can easily swap sides. ( The thing that attracted me the most was actually the colors u can put on AW and the MSI does it ) hence I say, keep the personal liking away. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Ok, well you are missing an important point here, and that is, you've come to the wrong place, and this discussion is off-topic for this thread. Take this to the GT72 thread..... I'll take the time to look over the current AW listings, and offer an opinion in PM. But give me a moment......

No problem. Ill drop this discussion not before thanking you guys for the time spent helping me with this headache.

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
This keyboard looks so lovely! Amazingly lovely, I'd say.

Kind of like the mechanical keyboard idea. In a large 18" case they have the room with the newer more miniaturized components.
On the other hand I think it was a bad idea for a different reason. On a laptop your viewing distance on the screen is directly related to your typing on the keyboard. Moving the keyboard out 5-6 inches from the screen will obviously therefore increase the viewing distance by that 5-6 inches. Now my eyes are about 30" from the screen on average, raising that to 36" is an increase of 20%.
An 18.4" screen is 18% larger than a 15.6", but when you take the added viewing distance into affect it will appear to be about 1% smaller than a 15.6" display.
Also moving it 5-6 inches further from you will push it back on desks making it take up a lot more space.
.|. Edit: better yet -=$tR|k3r=- I wasn't even right, I thought it was an 18.1" but its really
V 18.4" All fixed now. -

Anyone else liking the olschool sort of look that the laptop lends itself to? I'm getting serious early 90's vibes, mostly from the mechanical keyboard and its being moved down to accommodate for the high powered hardware.

I think it looks OK, it's just not your traditional laptop setup.
Sort of wish they just took they GT72 chassis and extend it remove the optical drive and install a 2nd GPU + fan.Cloudfire likes this. -
That is exactly what I wanted. Bigger GT72 casing and one more fan. It wiuld have been perfect.
Not this frankenstein that looks like a crash between Commodore and a modern laotop. Just look at the design. So much space wasted -

I want to see some better hi-res photos, and opinions may change somewhat when we see this.
With current images, to me the GT80 is butt-ugly, but I suppose if the features and performance are there, you can learn to love anything. It’s not exactly a design that draws you in for a closer look.
If I were liken it to an actual weapon, I see the GT80 like an AK-47….. ugly as hell, as compared to a modern M-4…… but once you start shooting the AK, you realize it’s pretty bad-@$$, and it grows on you, LOL!
Rather than a modern look, to me the design looks more ‘retro’, like past designs….. almost like early 80’s Commodore, Timex, Atari, or Apple PC systems.
Anyhow, I am betting I own one of these before Cloudfire does!

So much hate! I absolutely love the design. I don't mind the keyboard placement, because I never use palmrests anyways (I game with an external keyboard) and now we get a full sized gaming mechanical keyboard... count me in! All In all, I like this new design. I want to know and see the middle part housing and how they are accommodating cooling inside that thing.
As long as the rest is top notch, in cooling, components, upgradeability and performance, I am fully approve haha -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Hey, no hate here..... AK-47's are awesome, but still butt-ugly, LOL!
Absolutely! If performance, cooling, and fan noise meet the mark, it will be a winner..... but still butt-ugly!
And I bet I own one of these, before you too, ryzeki.

I'm probably among the few here that has actually hold and shoot with AK-47 and I'll say function >>> form
Same goes to the GT80, or whatever they call it. As an added bonus it seems to be perfect MoBo donor for an M2010 resurrection project
Yeah, I love kinky stuff

To me it looks like they sat down and said:
Do people tend to use an 18 inch machine the same as a smaller one.
The answer is no, they tend to be left on cooling pads away from the user, most of the time they have an external mouse. So they have changed the design to accommodate that.triturbo likes this. -
Precisely and I've actually tried to play with the touchpad a few times (didn't want to get the mouse out of the bag for 10min, or its batteries were out). Of course I'm not going to win a tournament, but a touchpad like the GT80's one would've been quite handy.
-
I have to admit that one thing I do like about this laptop is the touchpad a la Razer Blade style. Actualy, the position of it is what I like the most.

This would have been perfect:
Ultra narrow bezel 15:10 ratio 20" Display (Like the Panasonic Toughpad) G-Sync enabled 100% sRGB (This could fit in an Alienware 18 form factor)
i7-4910mq (or i7-4970k maybe)
2 x GTX 980m SLI
Ultrabay like lenovo y510 to give option of Optical drive, HDD, or a THIRD 980m for SLI
Great cooling system of course
Could look like the picture below though a little thicker probably.

MSI Unveils World's First Gaming Laptop
with Mechanical Keyboard
18-inch trailblazer with Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M video cards sets an unprecedented bar for portable gaming
City of Industry, Calif. - November 3, 2014 - MSI Computer Corp, a leading manufacturer of computer hardware products and solutions, unveils the GT80 Titan, the world's first gaming laptop with a mechanical keyboard and SLI graphics solution.
First of its kind, MSI's GT80 Titan ushers the future of gaming by integrating a SteelSeries gaming keyboard with Cherry switches into the 18-inch gaming beast. The GT80 also features dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M GPUs in SLI, Intel's latest mobile CPU and a variety of other high-end gaming technologies.
"Performance is key for gamers and the GT80 Titan will forever change the mobile gaming experience," says Andy Tung, president of MSI Pan America. "We are proud to be at the forefront of the gaming evolution and will continue to provide solutions that deliver the most outstanding gaming experience in the world."
The GT80 Titan will be the first gaming notebook in the world outfitted with the world-renowned Cherry switch mechanical keyboard, guaranteeing outstanding tactile key feedback and eliminates key jamming even during the most heated battle sessions. It will also be the first MSI gaming notebook armed with a very powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M SLI configuration, boosting performance that goes well into the range of desktop graphics cards.
"The GT80 Dominator blends the performance of a high-end gaming desktop with the mobility of a laptop," adds Tung.

@Derek: Any hope we might see it ship this year?Mr. Fox and Killerinstinct like this. -
Do we know if this will be released with a real socketed CPU, an Intel Extreme CPU option and real honest-to-goodness MXM modules, or will it just be another BGA Ultraturdbook with a second GPU?
I might be interested in snagging this machine if it will support a fully unlocked CPU and they didn't cheap out on the BGA crap. It looks snazzy enough. -

Everything hinges on CPU socket, Extreme CPU support and MXM slots and I'd be on it right now since Alienware has dropped the ball.
If it is BGA on either one it will instantly be a deal-killer and I won't even touch it with a 10-foot pole.
Looking forward to finding out if it meets these minimum hardware prerequisites. Looks really nice. -

Im very curious to see whats underneath the huge area above the keyboard. Some sick heatsinks and fans perhaps. Interesting time ahead -
Well, I certainly hope not. If we're stuck with any boring HQ permanently welded to the motherboard it's going to instantly fall off my list of potentially acceptable options. It also needs to be able to be upgraded to GTX 1080M SLI next year without replacing anything except GPUs.
... I was even getting excited there for a few minutes. Wonder if it will even have enough of an AC adapter to accommodate the kind of extreme CPU and GPU overclocking that I would demand of it most of the time?
As thin as it looks in the images, I suspect that area between the hinges and keyboard is where they have stuffed MXM cards. I'm a bit worried about it being too thin to be awesome. There's zero wiggle room in the chassis of the M18xR1/R2 and this looks much thinner. If it has a CPU socket and PCI-e slots, that must taken a lot of thought and creativity, or maybe it just looks thinner. There has to be room if you want great things. Should be interesting to see how it is built. -
OMG: MSI is coming with a GTX 980M SLI notebook!!!
