Does the 17-18 at the start of the model indicate the inches then? It sounds logical but will msi truly make a oven notebook? I mean if you've seen a Alienware 18 880m SLI and see the heat and issues they have will msi truly take up the challenge and don't keep it to some concept idea.

GTX 980M runs muuuuuuch cooler than 880M jesha :)

Imagine a SLI notebook, 18.3" with 3 of the fans you find on GT72. It will be a beast and it will run everything while staying cool an quiet

maybe if they add a bay HDD and erase the other and then the bay is exchangeable with a cd version or a HDD version and then there'd be enough place. And I reckon that instead of getting alot cooler the 880 and 980m are quite close in temperature but huge gap in performance.

The 980m is probably closer in heat to the 870m, the 880m is far hotter. It also uses less power than the 880m which means you can have a little smaller of a power brick.

I'm pretty certain it would be 18". As of now MS-16xx stands for 15.6", MS-17xx - 17", so it seems logical MS-18xx to be 18". I hope it would bring some innovation as well, and not just A18 with MSI badge :) Hopefully the release version wont get 47xxHQ, or HQ at all for that matter, as we can see that single 980m could be held back by this very CPU, let alone two of them. If it MUST be soldered (don't know why, they have their reasons I guess), request from Intel unique edition HQ with unlocked multis (HXQ, MHXQ, HXQMASDSA) :D

Is there a release date for this? Is it possible it will be released later this year?

Doubtful, considering it was stumbled upon by a leaked benchmark, and nothing is known of it except our very possible guesses (like being 18inch etc).

Since no info is available, maybe it will be a model to debut much later.

Would be a smart move to come out with it sooner rather than later and push Alienware to actually innovate.

    I have no idea :/

The worst thing is that this notebook may be released in November as it could come out in March next year. Id hate to miss out on it but it would also suck to have to wait til end of November and waste time if it doesnt arrive.

The notebook have been benched on various benchmarks for 2 weeks now. Something tells me it is close to launch but again, I have no idea.

    Grrr

SLI laptops are pointless and seriously say to you just get a desktop rig.
    350$mobo
    400$ CPU
    100$case
    100$psu
    60$ CPU cooler
    1000$ 2x gtx 980
    80$ Leftover stuff
2100$ total no heat or sound issues twice as strong CPU and 1.5x the SLI 980m gpu whilst being easily 1500$ cheaper
Just get single gpu laptops or don't get a gaming laptop.
It's not like you'll be distracting people with your hurricane level cooling sounds.

I was just looking at this list. That is pretty low budget when it comes to a top of the line desktop. And the pricing is off. You would need to compare top of the line in both categories.

    559.99 MB
    120.99 250GB SSD
    1040.99 CPU
    329.99 PSU
    149.99 CPU Cooler
    2319.96 4 GTX 980's
    359.99 DDR4 16GB
    189.99 Case
    499.99 27"2560x1440P Monitor
99.99 Illuminated Keyboard and mouse combo
    109.99 Speakers 7.1 sound

    5781.86 before taxes
    6244.41 after taxes

I understand when you people want to do you price compares like no one ever knew that it could be done. Pretty hilarious most of the time. And since I have both i can speak on it.

It is not always about money.... It's more about what "you" want as a consumer. Im sure you could tell me a yugo is better on gas and price. Would I sell my Benz and get one? Of course not!! Would i sell my Alienware for a netbook? Of course not!! Do I understand where you are coming from? Of course i do!!. But at the end of the day....It's what "You" want, not what you have to settle for. If it's something you have to rationalize or settle for....Then it's not what you want.

    Side note:
SLI laptops of today are now better than a single desktop gpu setup. Which 96 percent of the market share of desktop owners have(Radeon 295X2 and Titan Z are excluded). They are out of luck on the other 4 percent. :D

Remember. You fall under the elite class for laptops. It's only a handful of us in that category.

Really interested in seeing this new machine though....And how well it will handle the power draw.

I agree they are hard to justify, but you are blowing the difference way out of proportion.

MYTHLOGIC Nyx 3713-A Black Chassis (Clevo P377SM-A)
17.3" Full HD (1920x1080) Matte 72% NTSC Color Gamut LED Backlit LCD
    i7-4810MQ
    16GB RAM (2 x 8GB) , PC3-12800, 1600MHz
    2 x nVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 8GB GDDR5 (SLI)
Notebook Black 8X DVD+RW/CDRW Combo Drive
    Samsung 1TB 840 EVO {could be bought separately to save $60-100 making total near $3500}
    2x 1TB 7200 32MB Cache HDD
    Intel Centrino Advanced-AC 7260 2*2
    Windows 7 / 8.1
    Price = $3,600

    VS your

    350$mobo
    400$ CPU
    100$case
    100$psu
    60$ CPU cooler
    1000$ 2x gtx 980
    80$ Leftover stuff
= $2100 (this is what you had)
    +$450 1TB SSD
    +$80 2TB HDD
    +$80 Keyboard
    +$350 Monitor {could be more but at this price will be way better than laptop}
    +$80 Windows OS
    = $3140

So you are saving about 12.5% cash for a 30-50% better machine that has no portability, but better upgrading and over-clocking potential.

LOL! That would depend on what you mean by 'pushing'. The benchmarks 'push', the stress test 'push'..... and at stock settings, this is good enough for most system owner's, because it is theirs..... and they really don't want to risk 'pushing' too hard. Really John, do you really think most owner's will want to do Johnksss 'pushing'? :D

Personally, I'd be happy with a dependable SLI notebook, that ROCKS my games, and actually has the nice balance of low fan noise, with reasonable cooling. If MSI is having a go at SLI, they may actually do a good job of it. This will be interesting to see..... no doubt!

And no matter how you want to say how well your single mobile gpu plays games, it does not trump my Quad GTX 980 with 5960X. No matter how much you want it to. :D :D It doesn't even beat one.

All that laptop is to me is a toy and a way to get more points.(And that is very suspect with a single psu) Nothing more!

It looks akward, but I think there is no other way to include a mechanichal keyboard without having a 8cm thick laptop. The keyboard seems taking the whole deepness of the laptop (or most of it) while the hardware is under the empty part of the palmrest. It allows this laptop to be lighter and thinner than the AW counterpart, and even lighter than the Asus G750/751. (4,5kg and 49,1mm according to pepinorang (a french MSI employee))

That yucky keyboard on a notebook?
All that stuff above the keyboard with no function at all?

There goes my hope that MSI will step up to the plate since Alienware is abandon the Alienware 18.

Well they are offering something different. By using an actual mechanical keyboard, they can tout the "advantage" of having a good gaming mechanical keyboard. The size is huge and it does look odd at first though.

I am still very interested though. And I am really hoping for a 4K screen :)

Haha what a monster, and I am not talking about what's under the hood, that thing is cringe worthy, all that wasted space above the keyboard, and a mechanical keyboard really? isn't that what peripherals are for? seriously? did anyone actually want this? plus there is no trackpad, I would take laptop keyboard + trackpad above this anyday, not like I use the track pad for gaming, but for browsing or watching a tv show in bed it does come in handy .
I get the feeling all these "gaming brands" don't have a clue what they are doing anymore, it is pretty sad .
The GT72 was a step in the right direction, Msi finally classing things up a bit and then they do this, just LOL .
Imagine someone pulling this out at university or even worse at work, I think I would actually laugh at it, what an abomination .

Where is the GT82? I find it interesting that this GT80 preview, was firstly targeted to European markets, and I am certain this was no accident. This is but a 'peek' of what's ahead, and I am sure there will be other surprises for MSI's debut into the SLI market.

    Yep, exciting times ahead!

    :)

EDIT: and yes, it has a touchpad, doubling with the numeric keypad........

Trackpad IS the number pad screen, it is similar to the Razors, but serves a dual purpose. I however actually like the idea of a decent mechanical keyboard in a large unit.

Yeah me too. Gaming on an 18inch directly with a mechanical keyboard is fine by me :) I already game similarly with a 15incher and I can't help but feel the screen is tiny haha. I wish more info would come out :D

Why so salty about the deal? An 18incher is not exactly for college students, though I have seen students with even bigger monsters like the dell 21inch workstations (that are basically luggage size). I say this is a nice experiment to say the least. I would even use it at work.

I never understood why anyone is ashamed by their notebook at work... I have used both "serious looking" thinkpads, my Asus N550 and even my gaming GT70 around at work, and people have liked all of them. Not sure what type of work requires everyone staring at your computer and being judgmental haha.

Graphics designer where a pile of your clients cant fathom that you do work on a workstation and not on a Mac..... trust me.

It's the only reason I still have a bunch of them is to display projects to a number of clients and keep the flamewars and fighting down.

What's interesting is that it looks like the mechanical keyboard basically eats most of the thickness of the area it's in so all the hardware has to be in the space behind except maybe a cheeky HDD under the num pad.

Well just lost interest, at least there's still super slim chance they might grow some brains and say "wait a second it makes more sense to have 4K on a 18" than a 15" "

Ok so the question has arrived. Taking into account EVERYTHING but the price. Which one is better? The latest ( available for purchased now ) MSI or the latest M18 Alienware?

The MSI of course..... after all, you are asking this question in the MSI forum, right? LOL!

Now, go ask the same question in the AW forum!

    :D

No Macbook pro retina better than those options , you do know that until benchmarks are released and good shot of innards and they finally able to be bought. There's no point in asking which is better. Also the M18 might be sacked so ur only option is the MSI.

The problem is we have no idea of what the "EVERYTHING" of this machine involves.

We have no hardware specs, no cooling capabilites, no screen details, no power delivery details (very important to overclockers) etc.
