the "s" key problem that i had mentioned earlier has been fixed. it was a very simple fix that i thought was a physical defect. the rubber underneath the "s" key was simply folded causing it to limp down. I apologize for my lack of technical experience any concerns that I may have caused.

p.s-my roomate is back, and I might be able to post the pics tonight, not sure about the video though.

Pictures of the PowerPro R 12:17.

    Pictures by jacobbobcorn - Photobucket

my intentions of these photos are to capture the texture of this beast. hopefully you guys have a better idea of what kind of material is used. all done with a 5mp cellphone camera.

note: both plastic stickers are still on both sides of the touch sensitive buttons.

    please excuse my messy desk.

let me know if you guys want to see more. thanks!

So I'm looking at buying either a GT780DX or a 1761 barebones, and I'd like to make sure I understand what the differences between the two are (other than about $150).

The 1761 has the same keyboard as the GT683R while the GT780DX has the steelseries keyboard.
The 1761 doesn't have the turbo boost function, but this doesn't prevent overclocking.
The 1761 doesn't have MSI branding on it.

    Am I missing anything else?

Also, how big a difference does the SS keyboard make in terms of typing feel, is there any benefit to it other than the cool backlighting and the different layout for the bottom row of keys?

    Thanks in advance,
    James

Well I just ordered my ms-1761 barebones! I didn't order from power notebooks. I just wanted the barebones. I ordered an i7-2760qm and 8GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 ram separately. I can't wait to try this beast out with my SSD.

Correct same keyboard as GT683 & MS-16F2, no backlight.

Correct No TDE (Turbo drive engine). Overclocking can be done.

Our MS-1761 has our custom vga bios that increases the default vga clock speed from the stock MSI 525/1050 clock speed to 575/1150 stock clock speed. Overclocking is supported.

Correct no MSI branding but may have resellers branding.

Keyboard is the same feel as the steelseries but with no backlight

Read from the MSI GT780DXR thread that the MSI branded is brushed aluminium casing (top & palm rest I guess) while the barebone model is all plastic but with brushed aluminium like finish. Is that true?

Can those who have their hands on this barebone comment on the build quality please?

That is correct it is plastic with the appearence if brushed metal. The build quality is just as solid as the branded model.

The casing of the MSI GT780DX is plastic with a thin brushed aluminum veneer for the cosmetic look.

There are a couple of unboxing videos in this thread that will give you some idea of build quality, which as Rob says is just as solid at the branded model...after all, they are the same case and internal components.

    Great unboxing video. Much Appreciated!

Maybe you can try 3Dmark11 for start? and there're a few free benchmark tools like Resident Evil 5 & Devil May Cry 4, and Unigene Heaven. WoW is free to play now so you can also try taxi time fps bench using "/timetest" command though downloading 20+ GB content just for some benchmark may not be a very good idea unless you already had it.

For non-free build-in game benchmark so far I only know Crysis/Crysis2, Warhammer40k DoW2(original & expansions), and Metro2033. If you happen to have those would love to see some good fps numbers.

I'm not familiar with FRAPS but I know it can be used to record fps for games w/o build-in benchmark tools.

    RKC 1761 Extreme Gaming Notebook

We will have some game benchmarks up over the weekend.

The Unigene Heaven benchmark is included on the MS-1761 driver disk.

Unfortunately I don't have GTAIV, but I do plan to pick up Battlefield 3 when it comes out. So hopefully that'll give you an idea. Also, I plan on getting FRAPS soon. I'll post a link when I get some gameplay footage.

The 570m could definitely handle everything maxed out in GTAIV. In fact, it could handle almost everything maxed out in BF3, but BF3 requires much more power than GTAIV.

I put a used 2760qm off ebay in my system. Turned out to be some unbranded engineering sample with a stock 2.4ghz with 8mb cache instead of 6mb. It also has a max single core turbo at 3.5ghz according to HWinfo. The stepping code is 206a6, D1, which is the same as a final engineering sample 2820qm, which is supposed to be the same as a oem production samples.

Anyways this is the first time I used a mobile sandy bridge cpu. I have used a desktop sandy bridge i5 before. The desktop ones stay stay at the turbo speeds and do not fluctuate when I use prime 95. But when I use prime 95 on a mobile one, it never reaches the max turbo speed and it fluctuates alot. Max temp with 8 threads is around 85-90C.

In this video of a 2630qm:
    Sandy Bridge i7-2630qm + Turbo Boost + throttling w/ Prime 95 - YouTube
It never goes to 2.6ghz which is the 4 core turbo speed of that cpu. It stays mostly around 2.5ghz and falls to 2.1ghz near the end of his cpu test.

Is it normal that turbo speeds fluctuate this much on mobile sandy bridge cpus?

Just wonder if i order this with a 2960XM would there any option in bios that allow me to modify it multiplier or do i have to settle with the default clock? In other word can i overclock it like on alienware machines?

Anyone notice that if you use the non MSI vga driver, the lcd brightness control does not work. It still works in dos, but once in windows it doesnt work. S-bar will crash when your press FN + brightness changing button.

Anyone know of a work around? MSI drivers are out of date and the latest beta driver has much better battlefield 3 performance.

Also, is there a way to remove the S-bar star at the top of the screen?

Hmm, well I haven't had any problems with my brightness control.

Well did you go to the support and drivers page on powernotebooks.com? Cause if you go to the powerpro link, it'll give you a link to the 12:17 where it will have all of the appropriate drivers. Cause I just downloaded all of those.

As far as I know, I don't know how to get rid of the S - Bar.

If you use a non MSI driver for this laptop, the brightness control in windows wont work. Sucks because the MSI drivers are always behind.

Thanks for the tip, I hope they have an inf for the newest beta nvidia driver.

What is your guys take on the screen, Chi Mei N173HGE-L11? I find the anti glare coating to be bad, leaves a really grainy look on whites and light colors.
I have a Chi Mei panel in my older laptop and that anti glare coating was much better.
