Haha its fine mate, underneath the laptop is a sub woofer (Adds bass, or depth rather, thats generating the strange noise) Now it stopped when i plugged it in, and im running with bluetooth off and wifi on, it shouldnt be to hard to fix i dont think, i also flicked it a few times.
The subwoofer is the little chrome like wheel at the front of the laptop, lemme know if you need a picture.

Really strange that, any other computers in your house? I have this wireless sound device and it makes the same sound if there is alot of wireless usage, really odd i know but if you have other computers running wifi try and shut them down prehaps.
-

Are there any real difference between these two GT 725?
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/92675...sta-Home-Premium-Laptop-Notebook/Product.html
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/MSI_GT725-210UK_Laptop_GT725-210UK/version.asp?PID=
The latter is more than 100 quid more expensive, but does seem to have WUXGA. Where as the former have WSXGA+ screen? right? -
no...it not the driver prob...mad of this noise.
ps. ill install vista U x64 tonight. never used 64bit b4. hope its nice.
hi,Quicklite. u r right. seems GT725-210UK doesnt have the WUXGA screen -

Since i purchased my laptop approximately a week and a half ago, i have used it every day for 12 hours straight ( im on my final year uni degree and lots of work to do! )
My work has involved programming a 3d engine and compiling it, whilst doing this ive been ripping my HD DVDs in the background from an external drive and encoding them to MKV, also had about 15 windows of various documents web browsers etc etc. Half way through one of these sessions i have booted up games and played for a short period of time ( crysis and xblades ) both ran flawlessly.
Then ive put it into "hibernate" and continued the next day, so essentially it has been abused like crazy and rarely properly restarted.
Through all this abuse it has been fast and responsive, slowdown only occuring when im *really* *really* pushing it.
If you want a fast laptop id say this is the one to go for, it really is amazing what abuse this thing can take and not slow down..... really is worth every penny i spent. -
Definately agree with you there guppz, im making mine do crazy tasks xD and its running fantastically, the only thing im worried about is the build quality on the mouse pad buttons to be honest.
And this thing is a dust magnet lol xD -
Just run a crucial memory scan of my Advent, apparently there are 4 ram banks, and the max memory it could support is possibly 8GB, i wonder if this is correct, i know crucial do good priced memory
-
I dont even bother with 8gb in my desktops it just aint needed....
-
Oh i definately agree with you however there will be a point where more then 4gb will be properly utilised.
The next thing i want to know is the graphics chip, is it MXM compatible?, i know the CPU's can be switched out quite easily.
I just want to be ready for when my lappy ages really, no time soon but being ready is always cool -
There are 4 physical memory slots? wow, what sounds interesting for upgrade i the future...
-
yea...4 slots. but ud better got a 64bit system.
-
Probably could get 16 gigs in there then...
-
Just need to know the PSU of the lappy then really, although newer tech is using less power which is quite nice
-
Id have to say mate.. i think i disagree with you there. I only count two physical ram slots, possibly theres a total 8 gig capacity with 2 of the new 4gb sticks... but ive had the back off and the ram modules out and could only see two bays.
... i guess that doent really help quicklite -
hey guys,
having a right game with installing mac. think it might b vista, but im havin to use cpus=1 -v flags to get installer to load.
once its all done i just get disk0:mbr disk0:done message :/ -
Assuming this isn't already common knowledge, you guys might be interested to know that the Unreal Engine 3 can take advantage of multicore processors. Games using this engine include UT3, Gears of War and Bioshock... from among these, it seems that Bioshock (at least) makes good use of a the multiple cores, see for example:
http://uk.gamespot.com/features/6177688/index.html
http://www.tweakguides.com/Bioshock_9.html
http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5286
It would be interesting to compare the performance of Bioshock on the Advent 6555 vs MSI GT725 dual core, especially if we also take into account that the clock speed on our quad core Advent is less than the various GT725 dual core versions.
Anyone, want to generate some numbers with Fraps and saunter over to the GT725 thread for a comparison? ;P
[I did actually try fraps with Bioshock, with all graphics options set to max (full res, everything "on" except global lighting, which is graphically inferior when on) and the framerate was well over a hundred(*) (don't remember exactly how much, but definitely above 120(*)) but didn't save any stats... maybe I'll do it the next time I play]
(*)Edit: Somehow I made a mistake about the FPS. During quiet scenes it's slightly over a hundred (around 110 maybe) and in busier places or complex lighting, it drops a bit. But still smooth as butter... of course, anything above 60 fps is really just for bragging rights... -
) See if its too big and bulky; If it is, I'll probably sell it quickly on ebay; then get a GT727 or something. If its not tooooo oversized, I'll keep it till the summer...
I need quite alot ram, the more the better really... so Dell M6400 might be okay for that, as I use VMware alot... 4 slots and DDR3 support, awesome... -
Dell M6400 is charming, but it's too expensive
-
Im happy with my Advent
I just wana see if the new 725 OC can be utilised.
-
I honestly still cant get the settings on crysis that you guys say youre getting... are you runnning it on 1440x900?.. cos ive dropped it to 1280 by 800, have most things on mainstream, and a couple of things on minimum and it runs ok...
-
Since GT725-210 uses Q9000, I think same OC bio can probably be flashed onto 6555; though since there is no oc button, one'd have to to goto hidden bios, in order to OC it.
Go here, see if you can find that bios, maybe the system'll scan and think you've GT725 w/ Q9000:

Quicklite, we could use the FN keys and attempt to assign it to fn f6 (unused) and we could try to implement it via system control manager.
Blakers, i am having no issues with games at the minute, and everythings running in max however, i did earlier.
Just (right) click the battery icon at the bottom right of your screen and select high performance, that shifts about 500mhz more to each core if it isnt selected, that was my problem anyway. -
i tried the msi live scanner 3, said theres no updates avaliable.
hmm.....

this laptop better be worth the amount of hassle i have had getting it. I first orderd one of pixmania, them saying it was in stock etc then a day later it was out of stock so i ring them up and they dont know when there will be anymore so i ask to cancel my order. They have already taken the money out first. I then order apparently the last one from pcworld. Then i look at pixmania site and apparently my cancelation didnt go through in time and its on route for delivery. So at the mo i have 2 advent 6555 being delivered to me. lol
-
Its definately worth it (although it also depends on what you do) but its a bit bad all the hastle there putting you through.

Quick question...
Do any of you guys get a video driver error with 'atikmdag.sys' stopped responding? it crashes pretty much every game i try to play... seems like its a fairly common problem too, forums are full of people with the same error.
also, ati blame it on advent, and vise versa -
-
Just got my Advent 6555 and would like a few questions answered if someone can help?
Do i need to make backup discs? If so how many will it use or could i use a dual layer disc?
As vista is also new to me, how do i show hidden files?
Is there any antivirus software on this or do i need to install some?
Detailed instructions would be much appreciated -
-
Which is all thanks to this thread. Since then I been using my every day for around 8 hours at work. Again pushing it quite hard. And then three nights a week gmaing with the clan for 3-4 hours. And it just kept in top of things, I actually not used my desktop since I got this machine. Which was the idea

PS I saving on heating as well as the fan is keeping me nice and warm -
Also the DELL Power unit is a joke, look around on youtube as it huge and weighs about 2 kilos on it own.

I haven't updated the stock drivers or the catalyst control centre, so in case you have, maybe the problem lies there.
I was having problems with Bioshock originally, it kept freezing up on me right in the beginning, but I reinstalled a different version of Bioshock later that didn't require the online "patch", and I have had absolutely no problems since then.
(At one point I had also installed DirectX 9.0c, although after doing that, the "dxdiag" program still showed I had DirectX 10, so I don't know if both 9 and 10 were/are coexisting on my system, if that's even possible. Anyway I installed DirectX10 again after that, just for good measure. I don't know if this had anything to do with Bioshock running properly, but I doubt it.)
So I'll give you the opposite advice you gave me previously: revert to the stock drivers. -
BIG QUESTION TIME
Has anyone updated the drivers yet to the 9.2 version, as I do not want to fry or mess this machine up. And want to know if it kicks out any more GPU FPS?
If so how did you do it and what percent inscrese did you get.
Thanks
Max -
-
Cheers, think I leave alone for the time being then, got to say I imprssed with the kit. [Edit] Just did a quick test on UT3 (Steam Version) and running on external monitor at 1920*1200 details high got an average FPS of 55-62 [/Edit]

Hmm seems common games and video errors seem to be arrising quite quickly which is strange, ive played over 12 different games hours on end with no problems at all, occasionally the odd high requirement non multicore game sticks for a nanosecond but thats it, i am just using stock 8.56 drivers + a few windows updates but nothing too big.
I did however disable vista account control, which i have heard has caused problems with other peoples games in the past. -
Also how do you turn the brightness up on the screen? -
-
Do i need to make a backup of the other files on there ie, Drivers folder and Tools folder?
-
Does anyone know if a docking station is available for this? Id like to dock my laptop below my tv and play some games without the faff of having to connect a billion different cables etc.
-
Just got this laptop the other day. Must say I am pretty impressed so far, 10231 3DMark06 in Windows 7 with the Windows 7 beta driver.
I wonder does the latest MSI 725 bios on their website include support for the Q9000 version yet (GT725-210UK). I'm guessing nobody has dared to try installing it yet.
GT725 with Quad core, the Advent 6555?
