sorry to hear about the scratch.
i would perhaps try a touch of model spray.
use the protection that came with the screen and cut a square hole in it.

i have been reading up on ati overclocking and the thing they say u need to oc on is memory not the gpu

which is the bit you have probs with?
also there is a program that i will find for you that does a better job than the default one with ccc that tells you what you could do etc.

just had a look at mine which is not overclocked and yes the gpu does not go all the way but the memory does.
well it did when i oc tested it on previous drivers.
its locked again after installing 9.5

Mine artifact crashes during 3dmark shader model 3, games are also locking up after long periods of time now, i think theres something wrong with the card.

CPU wine is annoying and the speakers fuzzing at 50% is not acceptable, scratch on the lid from being returned either, What kind of model spray would i use? i plan on customising it up :D

But i do want these issues addressed or money back hehe, may try my luck with MSI directly.

yeah sounds like your repair didnt go that well.
thought it was just your mouse pad that had a scratch.

go to a model shop (bit like gamesworkshop) and ask them.
if you like i can ask my friend who works in one who was going to spray a pc for me what to get and do.

try licking your finger and rubbing into the scratch it always tones down scratches ive done.

can you buy another laptop the msi quad one?

I may try the duo core, i get a bit freaked at the heat (i couldnt complete a run of occt) if the laptop cant handle heat under full load i dont believe its worth the purchase, but this laptop is addicive :).

I was planning on some abstract design on the mouse pad, mainly circles (like the homeworld 2 ones if you know them - will get a pic) so i was going to re apply the paint onto the pad, and then spray paint the pattern on with a template :D

    Pattern on the left.

I really like the advent, i just hate when things get damaged cosmetically (by other people) and that the components aren't able to take what they were built to handle (and these dam freezes !)

what you running to make the quad heat up?
    i like the custom idea.

i read somewhere i thought it was you that sometimes the thermal paste hasnt been put on right with the heat pipes.

as yours has been in for repair it may be worth £7 or so buying some and trying to apply it yourself?

did u try the lick your finger trick to see if that toned down the scratch to bearable.

did u say the lid was done as well? if so thats bad as its metal. dam people sometimes.

The lid is ok, minor scratch, its from the plastic front, my dog jumped on the lid and no cosmetic damage or flex :)

I will get ICD7 as the replacement, ive heard wonders with that paste which is pretty awesome.

The finger trick did work alittle which is great, thanks for that tip. The quad heats to about 100% realistic temperatures with wprime1024

The quad heats 100% component wise with the OCCT test.

Its the speakers that have really ticked me off though, they were of such good quality before i had sent it away.

ok ran your prime program and got these figures

    cputest.jpg

is that normal and not what your getting.

ps whats wrong with the speakers? is it the ones next to the screen. press the grill down does that help.
there may be a bit of padding between the speaker and grill thats missing after repair.

could also be driver issue and setup?

Naa, not the drivers, but i tried holding grill down also (yes its the grill one) and its just not having it, i thought it was the keys, is the left side quieter then the right on your machine? Mine is :S

I just undervolted the q9000, temperatures have dropped greatly so im more then happy here :)

Hey darth, yeah, i used RMClock, also there is a way to have half multipliers work :p The temperatures dropped 10C under max load for northbridge and cpu, i was WOW at that, i only dropped it by .1, i may continue soon but for now its 100% stable :D

Speaker problem solved, it was the Dolby bass or srs sound thing overrighting all audio to enhance base (in actual fact the 2w sats cannot handle the base but it did give very good base control so i disabled and i have the audio back to normal)

I think i may have worn the top speaker rack a bit though by pushing them quite hard before.

    Audios great now though :D :D :D

well i didnt want to say youve been messing with the settings as i know you said some while back you had.

still good news your rig is ok and youve saved yourself £1100.

i have found a great site for drivers off a reputable uk magazine.
i have used it and so far no issues.

its called drivermax and the link is below.
for free you can update 2 drivers a day but at the very least if you dont want to use it to update, it will tell you what version you have and what version there is.

when you do update it asks if it worked etc so it can update the star rating and you can leave a comment as well.

you need to create a free user name (bit like this forum) before you can do anything.

    http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/

let me know if you use it & how you get on.

Strange thing is i didnt activate dolby tech, i wasnt even aware it is on there.

But it makes sense as im guessing the satelite combo with the single sub in a way is mainly trying to combine fine sound with the bass unit.

I believe the combo works great, will try that driver max :D thanks for the link.

ow couple of things, did you look at my temps picture?
    what you think?

also just leave the sound flat no effects else you will always be running into trouble.

ok here is the dolby setting thats on mine,
    dolby.jpg
is that what you had as its a tip what you said as i can uncheck or mess with it to stop a little vibration i get now and then.

I'd uncheck, it wants to force base through the sat speakers, and thats what caused the fuss, because the base is too big for it to handle (at high volume) but the subwoofer provids enough base for the unit anyway so im real happeh :D

Just picked this laptop up today from PC World ex display £699. Ran a quick 3dmark06 test and it scores 10962 out of the box using stock driver (actually dropped to 10580 using 9.2 & crashed in Crysis several times)

I paid £2500 for an Alienware M9750 18months ago which got nowhere near this score. This has to be the bargain of the century and I would recommend this laptop to anyone (if you can find one)

Small complaint is a slight rattle/buzz on left speaker, but as this is going to be connected to a pair of Boses its not really an issue (and would probably use headphones away from home) and for some reason I cant get it to output a signal to my Infocus projector (Catalyst shows projector, but no image appears on screen), although it works fine with my Dell monitor, so any assistance there would be much appreciated.

Read couple posts back on how to stop the rattle of the speakers.
theres a setting which boosts the bass to the little speakers which it doesnt need.

ive conected the laptop to an optoma project which only seems to work with ati and its find.

i think fn & f2 does the monitor swap.

yep the laptop is the best. even when i paid £900 its still half price anything else.

i would read backward from this post some 10 pages or so to get some tips about drivers etc.

come back with how your getting on.

I've tried fn f2, doesn't seem to work. I'll play around with it tomorrow and see if I can figure it out.

Can someone let me know what the model number is for the power supply as I'm finding the connection a bit loose and wonder if because its ex display they just threw a different supply in

    Many thanks

Well I was unable to connect the laptop direct to the projector, but it works fine via my av amp, so not quite sure what's up with that, but nevermind.

Installed Windows 7 RC as a dual boot, which works great just need to track down the bluetooth driver.

Quick question is it possible to boot via e-sata? as I'd like to add windows 7 on a seperate bootable drive? otherwise I'll have to get a larger drive.

    Many thanks

glade to see you found a way round your screen issue.
projectors with hdmi and pc's do seem to be a bit of hit and miss so far in my experiance.

i have just got myself and esata ext box that powers off the usb so i will see if i can select it for boot.

not sure why you would want to but i will see and update.
if you do replace the drive make note if you get 7,2k it could well be noiser and vibrate more.

ow and welcome to this forum post.

    got it working.
get 40-50mb a sec transfer speed. both drives 5.4k

problem is the upper case comes down a little too far for my cable to go in.
shaved a little bit off the top and works fine now.

will update with the boot option in just a tick.

Thanks, I appreciate it. My reason for wondering if you can boot from e-sata is I dont really want to delete the original o/s, but I really hate vista, so as laptop is not likely to leave my desk, I thought easiest solution would be to plug e-sat in and use windows 7 on that. I have installed a dual boot on the orig 250gb disk, but could only free up 80gb and I've already filled it.

Im baaaaaaaack! welcome to nbr vorbis, im glad to see your liking your machine :D.

I have plans for my machine, getting it a decent side screen, decent hard drive, advancing to 64bit and getting a decent HDD and using the stock with an e-sata casing.

Had a problem with the browser scrolling slowly, theres a setting to turn off smooth scrolling and strangely its speed up two fold now.

I noticed a few posts ago there was some discussion about getting the latest Catalyst drivers. I know this is probably old news to you guys, but the process seems to be a lot easier now - I have just installed catalyst 9.6 using Mobility Modder ( http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php ) and it was very straightforward.

The 3DMark06 score for my system with the original catalyst drivers was around 10212, CPU score of 2990, and with 9.7 it is 10460 with a CPU score of 3046, so it seems to be worth the upgrade. I haven't used CCC to oc the graphics yet.

    Hi there !

I am REALLY interested in this laptop !

However, I would like to know "precisely" how long can it last with normal usage (internet mostly) maximum with the QUAD VERSION ! (Not the Core 2 Duo)

And during games, how long maximum ?

Hi there, sorry to bring this back to the top but I just got a quick question
I'm trying to oc my Q9000 so i can play pcsx2 with some nice speeds(I already tried SetFSB and it's working fine-btw thx catacylsm for great overclocing thread :D ) but before I overcloc it any higher than 2,1 I want some proper cooling,so my question is
-any suggestions for a good cooling pad for advent?zalman NC-2000?
I'm a noob when it comes to laptops cooling...

Hey there, welcome to NBR and its a pleasure to have someone reinact this thread.

As far as i can see, zalman nc 2000 would be most effective, i have had great sucess with 2.3ghz overclocking, but others and i believe we cannot hit 2.4 due to our ram, people do suggest lower timings though.

    Hi,

ive finally got my hands on one of these beasts!!! first impressions are very good runs arma 2 on mid to high settings without any hickups. Very impressive as most mid range desktops would struggle to run arma 2 on low.

got a quick question, ive been out of touch with pc gaming for a while so was hoping someone could give me some helpful links and info on how to get the most out of my new baby. Is there anyway to force the fans to 100% to keep things nice and cool?? Read about the zalman cooler above, is the essential for any over clocking??? Whats the easiest way to overclock etc??

    Thanks for help.

There is no fan control available. I would recommend a cooler for overclocking, but it stays in a comfortable range at regular clocks.

All of the drivers on the MSI website work in W7 32 and 64 bit, including the card reader.

Hi guys, Havent posted here in a while... I noticed a refurbished 6555 up on the pc world website and thought one of you might have finnaly got fed up ;).

I see you've been overclocking yours cataclysm, how stable is that? Ive often thought it could be quite a good contender for a small OC, as it runs quite cool anyway. Did you have to change the cooling at all to pull that off?

One of the things ive noticed with mine is that at Idle, you get this whining noine i guess is the processor. Absolutely no idea what causes it, but as soon as you give it something to do, the noise stops... weird, anyone else got that then?

Also, has anyone managed to get into the bios proper yet? as im still dying to prise my control key off and switch it for the Fn key.. worst design decision ever on a gaming laptop. ;)

Also, what drivers are you guys all on? by far the best ive found so far are 9.6, I got a massive performance and stability increase from 9.4..... which wouldnt let me play any of the battlefield games :(.. gta4 now runs like an absolute soldier on 9.6 at nearly max, which is all good. Anyone had any luck with anything later though?

Laggass, whats arma2 like? not sure weather to go for that or flashpoint2, would you reccomend? i hear there were a lot of bugs at release, are they fixing those?

Vorbis, the number on the back of my psu is 8900525901 M1 Rev:A01 and its a liteon one

Still, I paid a grand for mine when it first came out, and 9 months down the line, i still cant find anything else that matches its performance for the price, so pretty pleased :)

Hi - I have just tried the WIndows 7 upgrade link, and although I bought the Advent in the qualifying period (great machine by the way - best I have ever had!) it says that there is no relevant product on the receipt (or something like that). Perhaps because it was a refurb? When I get a chance I will ring the number and see what they say. Did you manage to get it sorted in the end?

Nope, still waiting for them to 'activate' this number

yeah I'm afraid it has to do something about my Advent being a refurb as well...but on the other hand they didn't stated anywhere that refurb aren't classified for these upgrade

anyhow, let me know when you find out anything
    cheers

    Hi mate,

if you like a more serious war sim then arma2 all the way. The new flashpoint game is awful (well xbox 360 version is) They have patched up arma 2 a lot since release so most bugs are gone. If you have windows 7 the it runs like a dream on here with most settings on high!! Great game and the proper successor to Op flashpint 1

Hehe, glad you like it datus, i've upgraded to 7 RTM (from microsoft dev net) and the install went flawless as well as me only installing 4 drivers (Chipset and matrix with recent GPU and Audio) The rest are all there, Microsoft have really got themself a seller and i look forward to seing DX11 in action when i actually build myself a rig with 58** series in :).

Other then that the advent is a fine piece of kit, and one of the best purchase decisions i ever made. I may see about going for a qx9300 before the standard IC2Q are dissolved. (Mind you nvidia have expressed interest in keeping core 2 quad and duo core allive due to the fact that they are no longer making boards due to i7?)

    Back to topic :)

I can vouch for the Advent, the chassis is essentially the same but less colorful and minus the turbo button. The components including cooling setup is also the same as the MSI so exactly the same overclocking potential if thats what you want to do.

Screen is lower res - but more than good enough overall. Also it has the hdmi out so most, like me, will plug it straight into a 1080p tv anyway.

Build quality is not typical cheap advent, because its still an MSI at heart, you even get the same array of touch buttons across the top of the keyboard. Same decent speakers and mini-sub too - well decent compared to most lappy speakers.

    I bought 7555gx for £849, current version (8555gx) has bigger hd but is £70 more, w7 pre-installed.

All in all the cost difference is more than enough to make it a better choice than the msi. If the screen bothers you that much the solution is pretty simple. Take the £300 you just saved, and put it towards a 50" tv!
