Very good, notebookcheck describes it to the 4830, but overclocked this thing will perform close to oem desktops of its class :D

(prehaps also with performance upgrades/hardware like qx, that really kicks

    4830? u mean 4850 right?
i really want to find a way to OC it to 2.3ghz, considering its a gt725 in disguise, its very possible.

are you going to back up and try the gt725 bios to OC?

i might if i understand how.

No 4830 (as in desktop comparison, this is how it fares, so very good!, bear in mind lapy and dt gpu is a big difference :) )

Well we need to first create bootable USB (quickest way)

Then get a bios backup utility.

I may try gt 725 bios, but at the rate this repair is going...i could be in a coffin lol.

there is a rule that if your repair takes 28days + you are entitled to a exchange/refund/replacement(if thrs any) with pcworld. not sure about currys/dixons.

also, how long can it take for ram?

Well thats what i said down the phone, i will be asking for replacement if it goes over 28 days :p (although that said, the q9000 was working faster then others i'd seen for the lappy - no oc )

Ram should take 2 days...max, its buyable ANYWHERE and now that pcworld have the refubs to hand, they should just take it from them and replace the refurbs ram at a later date.

    Sucky i know.

So now that you have the machine how you finding it owais?

if its 28 days + they offer you a exchange for any other laptop and refund you the difference so you might aswell get the advent 6555 again (£899 in store at a discounted price, £760 online for the refueb). and keep the diff or use it on a SSD.

i sure hope mine dnt break or il be mighty pissed

Yours should be fine + i also got a discount token with the advent ;).

So i can use that also!

I think the CPU was just a bit off with mine, but ive seen rapid speed increases but other then that its spectacular.

Best machine ive had, and im sure yours willbe ok hehe.

Friday comes quickly! Hopefully mine will be here by then also (so im hoping...they did prioritise it though)

iv had a lot of laptops in the last year, a lot!

    3 dell sxps, all broken
macbook pro 15.4" (sold to bro as he really wanted it)
vaio FW31x (it was crap so returned)
ACER 8930g (ugly as hell, toooo big and slow even with p8600/9600m gt)

i like this so hopefully the refurb will work

Hmm, strange that you have had such bad luck hehe.

Ive had a sony viao fe21s, and have accidently spuilt drinks, dropped it, taken it to flaming parties for crying out loud, and its still in working condition with no cosmetic damage except for the fact that the mouse pad is worn down.

The refurb should be "as new" due to how new this machine is in the UK.

I think bloatware is quite minimal too but i cant remember if microsoft silverlight was sat in there hogging 2gb of space O.O!

so how come a the laptop 4850 is so small compared to the desktop 4830, why dont they make the desktop version small

Well they are manufactured on smaller die, have lower clocks, heat and power consumption, well to fit in the notebook i guess.

Its quite smart i suppose as mobile gaming is picking up quite nicely (people buy nb' every day)

Only the XGP units have more chance of running a desktop card but im not sure if they do or not.

can the 1722 be overclocked? and does it have a turbo button?

if it can be overclocked and doesnt have a turbo button, you might be able to do it.

is the bios on the advent 6555 a advent or msi bios to begin with?

they could make sooo much money if they reintroduce this laptop, i dont see why they dont

Because were not meant to have good things, get it ;)

The 1722 does not have the button (its a diy laptop so you can get the plate for the button, same with ours methinks)

Its AM bios, so MSI' default (atleast if i recall, its almost been 1 month....P***Sed)

Although its nice to have something that will eat everything in its price range to ourselves ;P

maybe they took it off cus the msi laptop is £300-400 more (around £550 more compared to mine) and MSI didnt want competition.

lol tech guys are a pisstake. tell them as they got refurbs, to just give you that. its your right if its 28+ days.

    AM is??
if its MSI's bios, then getting a gt725 bios which lets you OC from the bios(the gt725 bios does as far as i know) isnt a bad idea and we should try.

seems like the only two people with a advent are us 2. cant be too many people with one, thread seems dead.

Haha yeah, there just being greedy :p dont want anyone to know of the powaa!

Hmm thing is with gt725 bios is that is has limits on the CPU for quad (so at present, the advents is more effective) as we can use overclock tools if we like.

Problem is the turbo button runs off the touch pannel, so we would need to see if we can perm overclock from the bios, then its worth flashing :D

yeh, but the gt725 with a quad is already out. thats meant to be OC'able?
it comes with a turbo button etc.

if the bios is a msi one to begin with, i might try as i cant see the harm.

Its overclockable by like 3% not 16-24 :(

There should be no risk, and updating the bios shouldn't void warrenty either, even third party tools cant overclock the gt725 with quad core.

Heck we cant even figure out how to change multiplier with the qx9300 :p

if its 3%, no point trying tbh.

might upgrade gpu later tho, q9100 is £150 and qx9300 is £220ish.
when the QX9300 gets to the £100-120 mark, i might get one.

ssd has to be first though, a ssd will increase program load, startup and anything else that needs a HDD' speed.
SSd, 8gb ram then maybe cpu.

Hmm, mini pcie ssd for me (100mb read speed) and a standard hdd 7200 probably WD scorpion, then upgrading the cooling solution (REAAAL THERMAL PASTE) then 8GB of DDR 2 pc6400 ram (2x4gb configuration) but also some proper overclocking 4gb of ram i can quickly swap out. CPU to qx9300 at a late late date as well as hd4850 replacements to hand (as i will super overclock one) and prehaps mod a fan to it :)

Yeah them specs seem pretty dam awesome :) and the esata is another + with the lappy.

We have 3 mini pcie slots in total and i think 1 spare (although if we dont use blue tooth then prehaps we can take that out and have 2 ssd cards)

So i was thinking the SSD card in the final slot (which would be in normal cases for a tv ariel) and a high end but COOL running 7200RPM drive, after hours of usage the 33C on the advents right palm wrest heats, just a tad but its not disturbing.

Im gna totally reset this to factory (removing w7 partitions etc)
I may look into esata just not a clue about the pricing.

the fast laptop is very fast.
the build quality is ok. the screen wobbles when you move it and the screen itself i didnt like too much, its not bad but it aint good either.
it looks ok though and the aliminiuum is nice.

i backed up drivers an tools though :)

this keyboard has to be sooo annoying, the the heck did they leave so much space on the left/right?
the enter, shift and full stop which are used a lot are now midget buttons.

Hmm my screen is stiff as :/ takes two hands to actually pry that thing open (no jokes).

I really enjoy the screen, when you get into games u'l see why.
The aluminium is great, but finger magnet! and the palm wrests contract alot of sweat when gaming insanely.

It will take you about two days of continuos usage to get used to that keyboard.

We need a good bag for it though, i dont want to slam this thing around crazy as its going to become a "mobile" platform for me.

I too have backed drivers, next i will be learning to back up bios.
I'd do temperature tests by running.

    Wprime1024
Ozone3d Furmark (native res, stability test)

    With the latest HWMonitor open.

Just to make sure the internal hardware is assembled properly. (i always do these checks hehe)

I will try see what drivers we need to update (mine is now back at the state i bought it so i no longer will use w7, but ati 9.4 were such a great driver pack, and 9.5 is now apparently buggy)

my stiff is stiff to pen and move, when when you move it and let go, it wobbles a bit b4 being still

WEI is 5.8 for cpu and all other 5.9's other then the HDD which is 5.6 not suprisingly as its 5400rpm.

il test it later, got install programs first.

in msconfig(start up programs) which programs did you enable?
as i seem to see most of them important but im sure they arnt as my old laptop had a 1/4 of that and it was a dell.

also is that crazy eye called system manager do?

i just noticed CCC letsyou OC the 4850 so i dont need any 3rd party things. where can i get 9.4 from

Yeah, although WEI is equivalent to 7 in a 64bit OS (it is in w7, so is the memory), we need to get them HDD's out hehe.

Its strange though, my screen doesnt move at all, when i move the laptop this is, then again its a 17inch screen, i wouldn't be suprised if it was moving quite madly.

i dont really mind, once once its still, it stays that way and you need a little force to get it moving again.

in msconfig(start up programs) which programs did you enable?

whats that eye thing at the bottom right called system control manager do?

Hehe yeah, i really enjoyed the look of w7, but i dont feel like os mixing again, and i still have a laggy quad core :/ but its resulting in better results, i hope its not going to break again, its been sooo long lol.

Tonight, hopefully i will try gears and fall out 5, if not i will go Tribes Vengeance and Call Of Duty 5.

    laggy quad?

i find this laptop really quick and i aint tried games yet !

    also

PS: i checked the bios and it thinks thats the max clock.

the computer doesnt really lag and soon quads will be used in a lot more programs. atm most new games use it anyway and windows utilizes it too. stuff like firefox doesnt need any more so i think the quad is fine, and better then high clocked dual cores in games.

can you runit seems to think that i cant play crysis at the recomended(high) settings when im pretty sure i can right? i think as the cores are only 2.00ghz and they cshould be 2.2ghz but its a quad..

lucky i got mine, its sold out already :D

Well my 4th core, it delays behind it tests (altho it makes the tests 100 seconds faster then previos :S) I believe i got around the same, but will have to set it all back up.

Get wprime and run the 1024 :D
Disable all the crap you dont need (google etc from msconfig)
The eye enables pictures to come up when buttons are pressed.
It may even control all buttons.

It was a nightmare for me to get one, this unit was transferred from down south i think, crysis should run on highest at native (bear in mind its a greedy game!)

Im not sure if crysis is optimised for quad though?
And some catalyst are expanded old ones i think, but 9.5 is apparently unstable, we need to dig around for 9.4.

The speed of the laptop is rediculously good (dont forget to remove all the microsoft crap with remove files, oh and did i tell you that microsoft silverlight is hogging 4 gigs?? LOL!)

il tell you what i get in wprime in a bit installing it now.

    new 3dmark06 no OC
    10233 3dmark

Hmm odd, seems out of the 4 cores, sometimes they run at different voltages :S, its like there are 4 cores unlinked rather then having 1 Chip of 4 cores.

    This behaviour is so unusual!
Uploading the laggy core screens soon ( turns out its core number 3)

Prehaps i need to update chipset drivers, if any avail.

when you go to hardware info, does yours say the cpu clock is 1596.2 MHz?
    im on high proformance too??
also shouldnt the ram clock be 5-5-5-15 but mine is 5-5-5-18?

what did you get for 3dmark06?

The clocks kick in when cpu is being used so dont worry.

32million prime numbers were calculated :D
Do 1024, just to see that my q9000 is working properly can ya, and give me finnish time (by clicking view scores)

    Hm my ram is 5 6 6 18, ram:fsb 2:3 which seems about right.
CPU 1 and 2 are used alot less then 3 and 4 according to CPU z (3 and 4 have 1995 ghz while 1 and 2 are sat at 1596 or so on idle.)

The thread difference is strange, like 3 seconds on core 3 and 4 but core 4 has started on 23% and the others are still on 22, its strange, and it wont keep the order of thread 1,2,3,4 it will go like thread 1,2,4,3.

is there any way i can reconfigure 2 multimedia buttons?
i want to change that video button that open windows media player to windows media centre.
also i want to change the internet opening button to firefox.

also the 4850 clock is very low tbh cus it doesnt get beyond 50-55 degrees while in games. even though its fast to begin with, i might use the CCC thing to incrase the clock speeds 100mhz more for both.
somehow the cpu goes to 70degrees which seems very high for a cpu considering my old p8600 didnt go past 55degrees under pressure.

Hmm them clocks are low, bear in mind the clocks are low when idle (the score is right, 19 seconds is standard dont worry)

I dont think the buttons can be changed im afraid, but prehaps there is an interface to change them on the web.

My q9000 sits at 65C at maximum, i would suggest running wprime1024 at full for a run with hwmonitor open.
Hope your CPU is fine (the temps are still in the green like but there higher then mine)

Also make sure its on a table or something for max cooling (the intake is under the laptop :S)

Notice CPU usage is at 100% but core 3 is not at full, i find this odd.

    Its fluctuating.

I dont know that ATI can overclock either (it didnt properly with 8.56 drivers, it gets hot you know)

Did you try Ozone3d Furmark? that tests the card fully, unlike games.

I will find the registry edits to relock your ATI ( i did it when i sent it back in, haha)

Gain alot of info from this place, so it time to add.

I got my refur'ed advent 6555 today. However I wasnt happy with the screen res after being used an WUXAG screen.

So I swapped the screen from my old Alienware m9700 into the advent worked like a dream.

The screen is an LG lp171wu1(A4).
an easy job only took about 10 mins in total. However the advents screen bezal needs to treat with care its quite thin.

Agreed, good thing its not as thin as the gt627 one, an old alienware though? Didnt expect that to work, i do know samsung is compatible though :).

I love the lower res, it really makes this thing blast through games.

Oh and welcome to Notebook review autura :)

Oh and just before i forget, wprime calculates square roots rather then prime numbers hehe.

also can you check what the clocks for your gpu are in CCC?
i did the auto tune thing and it set mine to 540/890

    whats your 3dmark score?

also the reason for all the cores not being the same is some are being used as it is for windows etc.

Thats what it sets it to, defaults are 500 and 850 (i think) i dont really want to overclock again "just yet" lol :).

You temps seem ok, there are still more fan stages so dont think its not normal hehe.

Thats great, my q9000 is operating fine if yours is similar, im happy to say! (mine alittle cooler by 4C but its on a cold wooden table, its sucking up cool air in that case.)

I may try fall out 3 now.

I think i got like 10238 with stock all, i will get again soon but my internet is denying me acess to alot of pages :/.
