Advents support is slack (its almost 3 weeks since mines hasn't been returned) 775 is a destroyable price, you pass that up your silly lol.

The res of the screen isnt full hd (1440x900) but that means it will excel at games.

It is a rebranded MSI* machine so quality is good unlike other advent.
    32bit

You can make recovery disks with pre-installed software.

Its very customisable (like the gt725 which is basically is)
You can also buy the places (touch sensors etc)

I wouldn't pass that up to be honest :)
Screen is nicely lit, no wash out looks or bleed, good colour, fanastic gaming.

    Dam 775, lucky...

bit disapointed with 64bit when you got 512mb gpu and 4gb ram :/

so can you OC from the original bios. i would like mine constantly at like 2.15ghz-2.25ghz. is this a big OC? i want to keep it low so my laptop doesnt mess up.

also, isnt it tech guys who do the support for this?
also did yours brake down/what happened?

so i can make a recovery disc, and get all drivers from the MSI site?

Its very customisable (like the gt725 which is basically is)

what do you mean by this?

so the screen has good colours and that res is fine for me. has it also got nice viewing angles? and brightness.

Hmm true, 32bit is dissapointing however the remaining 1gb will adress the hardware (more specifically the ati will have 1.5-1.7gb of ram ^^)

Flashing an MSI bios and prehaps getting some "decent" ram would do the job (im not sure on the stock make)

Tech guys do support this (the first half decent recovery partition i've seen is theres)

There really slow at delivering back my goods :(

The ADvent as well as the GT725 should be able to handle newer cards and Processors up to qx9300 which i can now confirm!

Brightness is great, unfortunately viewing angles suck! It goes dark really fast from angles but infront is nice :D

I believe the ram was defective that is why it broke, it happened after a few months of having it? (prehaps someone didnt take anti static procautions but i haven't been inside it so it definately wasn't me)

    I think 760 is still a steal!

with the 32bit, how much ram are you actually left with on this laptop? as with most laptops its around 3.25-2.5gb.

im going to try to get all the drivers then torrent it or just wait for windows 7 and get an offical one. as the 32bit serial will work with 64 bit home as well.

also do they only provide you with 1 years warranty and how much is it to increase it to 2-3 years?

tbh, this is the newest card and i dont need anything more plus a QX9300 costs a bomb.

by tech guys support, do you mean this?
    http://support.thetechguys.com/layout.aspx?ID={5d24c374-4f60-4d1d-a745-839eaf45e946}&CatID={d48503ac-22dc-4c22-bb0c-41ca6067dbc1}

they also cover the warranty and if any problems go on?

Flashing an MSI bios and prehaps getting some "decent" ram would do the job (im not sure on the stock make)
what do you mean by this? what would getting the bios and good ram change?

is there no program in the msi software that lets you OC? then installing the msi bios would give it the capabilities?

Also, i know its quite a good price for a 4850 and a quad but advent have a bad rep(laptops break), take a long time to correct problems (your problem now), its just part of the dsg group which makes laptops for dixons, pc world and currys. plus this thread seems quite and not many people seem to have one.

where am i meant to find drivers from?
the techguys site seems to have 2 drivers only????

Its not Advent, im certain of this, its MSI, the drivers are in c drive/ app/oem

Its chasis is the 1722 which is for sure msi :)

You were wondering about Overclocking so i suggested the MSI bios as you can set ram speed configurations etc.

This was basically the first msi gt725 quad release, i think this was a market tester, and it went out of stock so fast it was unbelievably hard trying to get one.

    3GB of ram is accessible
It is only one year warrenty, they try con you into extention crap etc for 13 quid a month, covers spills etc i dont know if it was worth it so i said no.

Advents main problem is heat expending in the chasis, this i believe will not have that problem. (they are aware of cheaper laptops doing this, and as for the quiet thread, the gt725 one or the 1722 is basically the same)

But as i say, the laptop is quite future proof :D and your still getting a brutal price :D

    http://www.thetechguys.com/

    they deal with it.

alright, thanks il probably get one soon.

is there anywhere on the internet i can find the drivers? or do i need to get them from the folder and put them on a disc?

im not going to install bios's not made for the laptop.

    3gb :(

also if it sold out so fast, why not make more?

Probably because MSI are selling it for more with more gadgets :D

Hmm if need be when mine returns i shall back up all the drivers for us.

The bios is made for the laptop, the chasis no is the ms 1722 :)
Just ec ver varies as we dont have the gt725 turbo functions on the touch pannel (i think)

3gb could be expanded, i think theres a tutorial, but its nice that the last gb runs with the hardware i think.

Thanks, so your going to try to back up all the drivers?

where would i get them from if i were to install windows 7?
i know i can get the ati drivers, but the bluetooth, blu ray, touch pad etc. arnt on the tech guys site so i cant seem to get them.
where did you get the drivers?

im not sure all the msi gt725 drivers would work because it does have some different drivers and components from the msi gt725 like the screen.

i dont understand why they cant just make a site or actually give you a disc with the drivers :/

this thread seems a bit dead and nobody reallys posts so dont many people have a 6555

plus its a reurb i can get for 760, it is still worth it as advents get problems

The screen doesnt have a driver (atleast i dont think)

THe msi drivers should work, only the echo technology/turbo would not.

Yeah, i agree, Advent though, there not really the manufactures, just resellers i guess, at the very least they use there own components, granted the q9000/hd4850 wont really come across as cr*p, but the manufacturer of the RAM could easily be bad.

The 5400rpm HDD is nice and cool

The oem drivers work with windows 7 also :) So you will be happy to know, the oem drivers folder contains 32 and 64 bit.

If your getting a refurb, then your buying from DSG i take it?
It comes with warrenty and is reset to factory state so the drivers will be in the C drive, garanteed.

    760 is great, i payed 999 and didn't regret.
The advent is quite rarely talked about but im still here i guess hehe.

so where exactly could i find the drivers for the laptop?
do msi use exactly the same parts exept screen/hdd so the drivers would work?
you must have needed them at some point, where did you manage to get them from?

im gonna install 8gb ram soon anyway so idm if its crap quality.
5400rpm is slowwwwww, i wanted at least a 7200rpm hdd but il get a ssd in about 1 year or so.

Well the 5400 rpm is nice, i can get the advent running in 23 seconds flat out which is good.

The drivers if i can recall (its been 2 weeks so bare with me)
    C:/application/oem?

There all in there, from chipset to the tiniest thing, like system control manager.

It should happily run 8GB (i think thast what the chipset supports).

Advent use the exact same parts/frame/heatsink as MSI, the HDD and screen are the only varients, oh and colours but the blandness of the advent makes it look quite professional.

so all i have to do is copy all the drivers from C:/applications/oem to a disc to save them?
i thought you need like the original file like when you download them off a site. eg: when you get ati drivers, you unzip and install them, they look different and are installed. wouldnt you need all the drivers in the original form and you dont know where to get that from?

drivers have to be installed, you cant just copy/paste them, and the file in drivers is probably installed.

    also, 23sec on vista?????
    how?

searching the internet to find all the drivers is going to take a long time, why cant advent just give them to you.
edit: there is no applications folder in C:/

Drivers should definately be in C:/ not in zips, unpacked but not installed :/.

Well i run no Firewalls, and that guide i posted really did the job, just keep it fresh :), i mean vista boots up, not the bios post screen.

You can get ATI drivers from sites, its just tricky stuff like bluetooth etc, i cant remember the contents of my c drive :S.

    what about C:/OEM/application?

    Damit it was something easy.

maybe its cus im on a desktop atm but isnt vista layout the same and there are no OEM folders for me.

tbh compared to other laptops at the price im getting this it murders them. i did really want a multimedia laptop with a rgb led/ led screen but there is no 16" or more laptop under £750ish.
the dell studio xps is £1000 for a decent one, sony is £1050, hp sucks, acer sucks and iv never had a advent so cant be sure but the price is :D

considering im going to be watching movies does this laptop have a good set of speakers? nice bass?
i think you said the screen is good but how does it compare to other laptops and which ones? how about to desktop screens (usually way better)

other then that, im not actually gaming much, maybe bfme2 but my fw11e with a 3470 maxes that. bit of a waste lol. ps3 is too good.
i saw one in the pc world store last week and it looks nice from the top but once opened looking at the screen, its a bit ugly.

il get one anyway if its screen/sound is good and the quad plus 8gb/ssd i am going to install next year should make it future proof.

The screen res isn't the highest for 17 inch, but it has no bleed at all, will crush laptops within that price and will easily be future proof.

I enjoy the screen, its not as good as compared to my sony vaio fe21s but it does the job, quite well i might add :D

Personally, i love the speakers, and the sound pannel, you MUST try out the different effects because they each sound different.

The top of the screen has the cam and on the outside a kind of cutout plastic, (i think) but it isn't really off putting.

I class it as future proof, for certain, but gaming IS a strong point with this machine :)

I'd say bioshock and COD5/Modern warefare 2 would be some great games for you to try.

    thought id say hi.
this was one of the posts that helped me to decide to buy the advent 6555.
    i too love this laptop.

thought i would post some bits

the german website that helps you to install the ati 9.5 drivers is
    http://forum.gt725.de/
its not easy to use but i did do the upgrade.
it wasnt nesecary to do any more uninstall other than the normal add remove programs

    the install bit i followed.

the folder for the drivers on your local pc is indeed
    c:\applications

has anyone done bios updates or enable more options in current bios eg. fsb settings

dont fancy using setfsb.exe as i would rather use bios.

I found it a bit of a shame to discover the laptop speakers are stero (there are 4) but the sound is excelent including the subwoofer.

I have played the latest ridick game and there is a bit of a stuter but that is a game issue not laptop. make sure you untick multithreading.

hope to get some more games later.

    Hehe, hi Datus.

Thanks for confirming the OEM driver folder, i was close haha.

The MSI bios should indeed work however with q9000, there has been a restricter (if using GT725 bios for q9000) which is ashame.

I think people on GT725.de were able to use GX720 bios to allow these functions though (or atleast the use of set fsb)

I also think its anoying how its stereo, i just think expanded on the speakers and run left and right wiring.

The sub is nice though, can feel it on the laptop.

You can see lower res benefitting hugely.

Are you sure you need to untick multithreading? That will benefit with performance in my oppinion.

Benchmarking, these games are crysis, devil may cry 4, world in conflict and x3-tc

Picture of the Advent in game, the lower res doesn't cause any image distortion or rough outlines since its on a 17 in screen.

    Advent on the right.

On the right in the dark (can see the screen colour is nice)

On the right closed (bad quality i know) but you can see its a farely nice looking, although plain machine.

I may open up an owners lounge with a proper video review when mine comes back hehe, that should spark the advent a bit.
Just so you get an idea :D

already played bioshock and cod5 and going to buy MF2 but on the ps3 as i like that more and can play with friends.

also that C:/ must be like an advent folder cus i dont have it.
    should it be there? [IMG]
so that contains all the drivers zipped? so i can store them safely on a disc?

also if the advent is basically the same laptop as the gt725, the bios should work, after that you should be able to go into the bios and set a unused button to use as turbo and eco like on the msi gt725. as the turbo and eco buttons are buttons afterall.
if anything goes wrong techguys wouldnt know the problem and probably replace it. as my cousin punched is computer screen and put a dent in but tech guys came to fix it and when they couldnt he got a new one.

does the advent have 2 HDD bays?

Only one HDD bay im afraid, most likely spare mini pcie slots (so netbook ssds should fit into there, and tv tuner)

I dont know how to set unused buttons as ecfirmware deals with turbo button press etc, prehaps its doable through some modding.

Lol, C:/ is there, your screenshot has local disk

So its Local Disk (C :) > Applications, and the drivers should be in there.

Tech guys seem to be reasonable (or rather strange) but i'd get the impression of them just replacing stuff if they cannot fix it too.

i dont think you need to mod, you just need the gt725 bios and change function of one of the keys (F?) to turbo. but you probably wont get the advent bios back lol asits nowhere to be found so il keep 2.00ghz.

i have no applications folder in my computer, maybe its just on the advent.

also, does that contain all the drivers zipped so i can save them to keep safe?

Hmm very odd, my Advents C drive didnt have half them files.

I will attempt to backup the bios (its doable)
    and upload our drivers :)

    Also i can see windows.old
    Windows.old000

which means someones tried reinstalling the OS twice (if its a refurb then this makes sens)

The application folder may be in one of these.

    advent is not here yet.

good site telling you parts of the advent and the manufacter so drivers are easy to find.

also, so are the drivers zipped/rared as a installation file and not already installed in the C:/applications?

    advent_Drivers.jpg

shows a picture of drivers location. And to be fair didnt know until catacylsm mentioned it. cheers for that. ps keep the posts and info comming.

yes for riddick inside the game there is an option to turn of multithreading and it makes the game playable. have all settings to max apart from anti.
its not the laptops fault its a game issue.

i dont have any problems with the speed of my laptop booting etc and i havent done any tricks except turn off drive swap file and disabled a few startup options using msconfig.

i did have a big list of tricks to make vista behave better and leave the hard drive alone but the 6555 doesnt seem to need them.

    i may apply in future.

im using zone alarms for firewall. free and casues no problems and using viper anti virus/spyware free trial. may use antvir which is suposed to be one of the best and free.

i have hooked up the laptop to my projector (which only seems to like ati) and watched blu-ray movies no problem.

also can i point out that the blu-ray drive is a fast drive 3x speed i belive. i get 2.5x out of it.....

cant believe how cool and quiet the beastie is. i tend to use it mostly in power save mode.

i have downloaded and installed the latest 2.25 realtek drivers ati hdmi hd ones (ones installed were 2.09).
    here is the link

Ahh good news, and great screenie!

I use comodo antivirus for monthly checks, but when my computer comes back i may run safe with everything, uac and firewall and antivirus.

I dont think performance will be affected that much (although i know 4200 RPM DRIVES SUCK)

I hope that 5400RPM will handle smoothly :D

    Windows 7 is great!

I use that power saver so much also, even for gaming....and high power is just, wow :)

5400rpm toshiba, but super cool running.

Comodo is both antivirus and firewall, it is very efficient.

UAC prevents the edition of imporant files (well some of the important pieces of the file)
It is also linked to internet explorer security, i believe it helps with say a virus that wants to modify something, UAC will prevent its operation without permission :)

I class it as quite important, but if your sure with what you do, turn it off :D

    Special Beta Edition -- Correction

Because you signed up to test the Windows 7 Beta, we recently sent you mail about the expiration dates for the Beta and Release Candidate. Unfortunately, we made a mistake.

We said the Beta would start shutting down every two hours on June 1, 2009. The correct date is July 1, 2009.

The rest of the dates in the mail were correct. Here’s a quick summary:

Version: Starts shutting down every two hours: Expires:
    Beta July 1, 2009 August 1, 2009
    Release Candidate March 1, 2010 June 1, 2010

We apologize for the error and any confusion it may have caused.

Thanks again for helping us test Windows 7.

This was the main thing that almost prevented me from getting the MSI (same keyboard, same everything almost). I decided to go for it anyway. After 1-2 days I was completely used to it. The only issue I have now is the Fn and Ctrl being switched, which for some reason is the case on a lot of laptops and is fixable if you really care.

Just bougth the last one they had at pc world in Dublin saturday....since it was the display model i actually managed to haggle it down to €910, AND i persuaded them to throw in a brand new razer deathadder mouse :)

only used it for surfing and watching a bit of blue ray movies so far, but im gonna crank up a few demanding games later on to see what it can do. Only tried Stalker so far, and ran smooth as silk.

The only thing i really hate is the fkn vista e...cant stand that os. xp is going on asap!

Hehe, well worth it though hey RK? The cost to performance ratio is superb, PCworld are doing refurbs for £760 freekin crazy if you ask me.

I quite enjoyed running W7 on the machine, but i think my q9000 have been going bonkers lately :S (well before it got sent off for repair)

Q9000 was giving me scores of 700 or so in wprime 1024, later it sunk right down to 509 with one core delaying behind :D

Hope they dont swap too many components out (as it was just ram block failure)

hey cata, you seem like a techie guy. Any ideas of what i should turn off in vista to improve performance (and how, control panel i guess and then?) Not that its slow or anything, but got close to 0% knowledge about vista.

how long you had it before it crashed, and was it due to tweaking it or pure hw failure you think? Not that im worried, even a new porsche can have its glitches :)

hope you get it back soon then so you can continue enjoying it. So far i must say i have really been impressed cost vs performance/build. Was expecting a maybe a mediocre chassis for that price, but its really not bad. Only the pad buttons seems a bit off but i use a mouse all the time anyway.

I believe intel dynamic acceleration pushed the CPU too hard (suckish really :/) and the ram couldn't handle the ratio of fsb to ram/speed.

So it was not the computers fault at all :) (unless it was static discharge from construction of it?) (i love to push stuff constantly but wont when it returns as its fast enough haha)

This guide can really speed up the Advent, i dont run full time antivirus solutions but i do suggest it :), i also reccomend upgrading the hard drive as its 5400rpm.

'Thanks to Les and his personal testers for these tweaks

"Here are the ones i've found to have a great gain in startup/shutdown + performance boost."

    1. Disable TMM

This tweak is responsible for about a 3-5 second delay and blank screen flash when you start Vista. It searches for external monitors but is unnecessary.

If you are not using an external monitor, or don't switch back and forth always then turn TMM off. This is responsible for a 3-5 second pause and blank flash you get when turning your computer on.

Here's how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:

    Go start/control panel/administrative options/task scheduler.
On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).
Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."
    You're done!
Start time reduced and blank flash gone!!!!

"The one below works very well but do take note that changes to the registry can damage your computer! (Do backups etc etc)"

    3. Cut Shut Down Time In Half!!

I need to precede this with a warning that we are going to advance ourselves a bit here by moving into editing our registry. It means that its absolutely necessary to follow the exact steps as a wrong entry or deletion my cause a reinstall of Vista at worst.

Before we start, by default, there is a 20 second delay in shutdown of Vista, a process that vista has set in order to allow software to shutdown correctly. You can adjust this to a much shorter time, thus significantly reducing the total time it takes to shutdown your computer.

    Ready? Ok lets go..

    1. Press the Start Orb (bottom left and then go into the Run command (remember Windows key + R).
    2. Type 'Regedit' (without the quotes) and hit enter.
    3. As the Registry File is so large, Im going to ask you to go top right and maximize this to full screen...and follow me.
    4. Click the little triangle to the left of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SYSTEM/ CurrentControlSet/ Control.
    5. Click on the "Control" Folder. Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout" Right click on it and select Modify. The default value is 20000. Setting it to a lower 4 digit value, say 5000
    6. Simply exit when done.

The 20000 signifies a 20 second delay wheres 5000 signifies a 5 second delay. I cut 20 seconds off my shutdown time by changing this as it suggests so don't try and figure out exact time reduction by numbers...just play with it bit by bit.

You may want to remain at the 5000 mark as Vista does need time to shut software down. If this is not enough, come back and increase the size.

Disable UAC and VISTA Indexing helps.

Also checking some advanced HDD options can have a nice gain.

    10. Turn on Write Caching for Better SATA Disk Performance!!!!

This tweak speeds up the performance of your hard disk by enabling write caching. There is a danger to this, if you have no backup power supply, as a loss of power would result in loss of any information within the cache at the time of the outage. So.... make sure to continually backup your files in data programs such as Word, Excel, and so on...

    To enable write caching:

    1. Press Vista Orb/Computer/right click on 'C'/Properties;
    2. Click on Hardware and double click on your hard drive;
    3. Go to Policies and check 'Enable Write caching on the Disk'
    4. You can go one step further by checking 'Enable Advanced performance' but pay attention to the underlying warning.

This option isn't available to all. Newer systems are automatically set to run in AHCI mode through the BIOS and utilize a program called the 'Intel Matrix Storage Manager'. Together, these already enably higher performance of your system and prevent you from 'Enhancing Write Caching' on your own. You may be able to check it off but when you exit and return, its unchecked again. Don't panic!!! Thats just the way it presently works.

I would also add, Run an antivirus every week/month, CCleaner or Auslogics Registry Defragger and shutdown any unneccery processes during start up.

You will notice a nice difference in this tutorial, even on an old battered vista pc '

Here is gaming performance of the Advent :D
The lower res yields great frame rates.

lower res looks worse as well though(1400x900) but better then having 1400x900 on a screen which doesnt have 1400x900 as native.
1400x900 is a good screen res atm to play games on as too high atm and the gpu's dont handle it well, too low and it looks ugly so 1400x900 looks about right.

defrag takes a very long time to do so i cba with it but i run a antivirus and use CClean(30sec max?).

the best way to speed up your laptop is a solid state drive, but they are too expensive atm. 128gb is around £200+.
i would wait till maybe next year, this time and get one as SSD prices double in memory and half in price every 18 months apprantly.

so keep the 5400rpm atm and get a new one next year, also 8gb ram will get cheaper soon and pair that with windows 7 when it comes out :D
also, installing the msi gt725 bios should let you OC and possibly if the gt725 gets a Q9100/QX9300, you could get that.

has anyone tried the gt725 bios on the advent 6555 yet?,

Bit lower then 30 seconds methinks, CClean is super fast in my oppinion :D

Hmm i think they are too expensive to be honest, and a 7200 rpm is pretty dam great, but come next year hopefully prices go down :).

8gb should cost about £80? from crucial at present and with windows 7 will be great.

Q9100 and qx will definately work :)
I havent cross biosed yet but i've heard of other people mixing msi model bios and it works great.

Use auslogics reg defrag, its very fast. (just do it when your out or something hehe, well worth it.)

i have no clue how to do it and cant find it on the internet,
if i can backup the bios, it might be worth seeing if you can use turbo. also, gt725 bios is probably better with better cooling.

i think advent wouldnt be arsed to make a bios when a laptop has one and probably use some msi 1722 bios, and msi 1722 can use the gt725.

yrh, its a good price, as far as i see, its the cheapest quad core in the uk :D. and as far as i can tell from you, a nice laptop too.

also, did you take 1 year warranty with your laptop?
also, if your ram stopped working, it was probably not installed properly/in the right conditions. when are you getting yours back?

also the 1722 uses the gt725 bios, and that barebone is exactly the 6555 so im very sure the msi bios will work.

Hopefull mine comes back soon (but these goons cant even get a replacement order) so i cant tell when, 1 year warrenty standard.

The Advent is the very same as msi (insides wise), cooling also :D

I can definately see msi bios working for future usage.

    caution about drive change.
7.2k speed drives will produce a lot more heat/noise and eat batery.

solid state drives are arround £100 for 30gb which isnt a bad choice then you can either use a usb drive for films/iso etc. but i hear they use about same power as a hard drive.

My preferd choice would be to
leave drive as is, connect up a 7.2k eSATA drive as and when its needed.
I have looked at some ideas where you can connect a small array of them so you can access 8TB which you can store all your blu-ray iso's etc.

the person asking what you use to play blu-ray movies is to use power dvd ultra oem which comes with the advent 6555 and thats the only software that really works.

7200rpm isnt as 1/4 as bad on the battery as a quad processor vs dual core, at most a 7200rpm over 5400 should take 2-5W more.
SSD takes the least power of them all.

Thats why i trust WD drivers, they actually run relatively cool and low powered, and the noise is also quite minimal :)
