The catalyst control center now has ATI Overdrive built into it, in the overdrive section it has a temp gauge and you can also overclock the GPU from within CCC.

Here is the 3DMark Vantage score:
W7 32-bit build 7000; Turbo On; No graphics card overclocking; ATI 8.56.1.4 driver.
    3DMark Score P5173
    CPU Score 5589
    Graphics Score 5048

    http://service.futuremark.com/home.action;jsessionid=80CF1A68F7A83DF05A957FAF17A8AA39

So far I have been unsucessful at installing any graphics card OC'ing software. W7 must do something quite a bit differently from XP and Vista when addressing the video card.

looking good. we can see it, but probably only for one day....because the card shows as a generic vga card....

still working on them to add the mobile 4800's.

edit: not sure about versions, but see if you can find this one 8.541.0.0
it may need to be modded slighly, but seems to work well with vantage..and if it works with vantage...chance are pretty good it will work with a few of your games...i know it's old, but until you can get someone to mod and test...everything is still up in the air at this point.

I noticed that. I'll re-run it whenever need be. I think I may have found out what is going on with the gfx oc softwares. Gonna install a different build tomorrow that may "allow" me and my computer to run these programs.

Other than not being able to get these graphics card overclocking programs running the system is 100%. Not 1 BSOD or lock-up yet in both 32 and 64 bit. W7 installs in ~26 minutes on the 725 with the SSD in it.

At Idle\Web browsing it is nearly silent. I've only heard the fan kick up once during 3Dmark06. The fan was audible but not as loud as my Acer. During Vantage the fan stays at idle, as far as I can remember. The cooling must be very good inside this laptop. I will be opening up the cover soon to check it out!!

Hey Guys..... Got mine thursday from frosty Computers as promised...

This computer is awesome, it has the right combination of hardware to handle all Games/software with ease. The sound is better than any speakers I've attached to any desktop (Boston Acoustics & Bose). You cannot hear the fans even on turbo and maxed settings. I have played Assassin's Creed for a couple of days with everything on high and 1080p - not a glitch or slowdown whatsoever.

    3DMARK06 = w/o turbo 9430 - w/ turbo 9814

I have run everything on Vista 32bit and only 2 problems.
1.) SKYPE will not work - still working the issue.
2.) The partitions they set are off c: 44gb and d: 248gb - all programs go to the C drive and it is almost maxed out. I need to shrink D and expand C - Anyone know the easiest way????

Thanks and let me know if you have any other questions....

Ok, I decided to download the MSI vga driver package and try it in w7. The software installed without a hitch. It updated my driver from 8.12 to 8.56, as windows sees it in the DM. I got the new vantage score of P5274 3DMarks, which is an improvement. Here is the link for the results:

is it safe to say i'm not really losing out on anything from the 074 if i don't care about bluray?
and to the average gamer, am i REALLY going to notice/care about the difference in maximum screen res?

i save close to $300 by buying the 074 over the 075 and i'm close to pushing the red button.

i'd still like a definitive in-depth review of this laptop. one has yet to be published. slowly accumulating bits and pieces about the laptop throughout this beast of a thread.

looks like the clevo np860 is almost out of the question if i throw size out of the equation.

Well, P9500 on 075 has twice the L2 cache as P8600 on 074, the difference in L2 can be noticed in CPU intensive games.

i guess a better question to ask would be..

is this going to matter to a gamer who plans on playing

    d3/sc2/wow?

aka, i don't play crisis or many fps.

Nope, not at all. Only in heavily CPU intense tasks will there possibly be a difference, with the amount being dependent on how much cache memory the program uses. Ie. don't upgrade just because there's more cache.

does that mean that you are actually over clocking your GPU ???

isnt that a bit dangerous as it may burn out ???

The ATI Overdrive has a feature built-in if the GPU over temps it will downclock to protect it:

just curious with ATI overdrive does that mean the performance of the card is now equal to a 9800GTX? If so what about the 4870's :D

without Overdrive the 4850 was already equal to the 9800m GTX. I'm pretty sure the 4870 will be going against the GTX280m (or 260m) in the future.

I strongly recommend against any overclocking until there's full Mobility support. 48xx cards run incredibly hot and there is no currently working temperature reading program. I hit 80C regularly on my desktop 4850 and that was with no overclock. ATI Overdrive is also notorious for taking people's clocks to levels that artifact in seconds when ATITool's Artifact Scanner is used.

Personally, I would never even consider overclocking a GPU that I couldn't read a temperature for.

The ati overdrive center has a temp reading available, it will also throttle back the vga if it gets too hot. It does work because i was running quite a few tests in 3D06 in a row. The card reached the temp threshold and was throttled back by the overdrive center. I have also run this through Far Cry 2 benchmark and 3D06 and have seen zero artifacting when overclocked.
