Thanks. So is the firmware update necessary either?

You can update, but stick to the same version as you originally have.
Make sure the system is not having any stability issues before you update it.

    Hey guys

Quick question I order the IC Diamond upgrade with this laptop. What temps should I be experiencing with the added upgrade?

it depends on your environment temperature. However, I experienced that IC Diamond doesn't worth the extra in compare with other thermal paste. It got IC Diamonds 24 for free from GentechPC, with the environment temp about 28 30 degree Celcius, my laptop idle @40-45 and fullload @86-90. I cleaned it and try CM Fusion X1, kind of non-famous paste and get around 3 degree higher.Gonna try Prolimatech PK3 or Thermalright CF3 soon.

p/s: all the stats are measured in Turbo Fan off. If u turn it on then u can get 7 to 10 degree lower but it's noisy. Moreover, in the lastest bios, i felt like MSi get 90 degree as a mark point to adjust fan, which means as far as your lappy run below 90, fan speed is low, if u go over that, it start to run at higher rpm -> hence put the temp below 90, then rpm go lower -> ..... -> quite funny

Up to the high 80s due to how turbo works with the 780m. Less if you replace the pads.

We used Furmark and stressed a laptop for hours with IC diamond applied, and the temperature was maxed out at 81 Celsius stably, and the room's ambient temperature was about 26 Celsius.

I just update my laptop to windows 8.1 with all of the Bios, firmware and driver updated. However, i found a problem that my laptop need to boot twice to start. For specific, when i press power button for the 1st time, the fan run, power led turn on, MSI logo appeared then it turn off. When I start it the 2nd time then everything seems to be normal as it should be. So how to solve this problem? anybody experience this?

Can you verify your BIOS and EC version?
After doing the updates, did you perform EC reset (unplugging AC adapter and battery)?

Is it normal for this laptop to use 1.9-2.2gb of ram without running any programs? Task manager reports 23-25% ram usage after a boot. (Only stock start up programs are running.)

I am thinking of purchasing the 2oc-022. Does anyone know the timing of the memory chip (i think it's an 8GB stick) that comes with this system?

I've been searching for a CPUz screenshot of a stock machine but having seen anything.

    Thanks!

Check in your BIOS to find out the version that you have for both BIOS & EC, and then I will tell you what to get for your system.
Normally, update BIOS first, then EC last.

That's within the normal RAM usage for windows 8. You can look at the resource monitor for details to see which processes are using memory.

    Hi all,

Just received my MSI GT60 2OC-077US a little over a week ago. I also received a crucial M500 2.5 240gb SSD. I opened up the back panel to check to see where the current 750g 7200 rpm drive sat, and noticed I have room for 2 drives (one spot taken by the primary HDD, and one spot open for another drive - SSD or HD I presume). It seems the best thing for me to do is put the 240g SSD in as my primary drive and throw the OS onto it. Is it easy to replace the drive? I'm used to desktops, not so much laptops. The open bay for a 2.5 HD or SSD seems simple enough to plug this SSD into, but I think I'd want the speed benefits of putting the OS onto the primary drive... does it matter which bay drive is the primary? Looked all over online for info on my specific MSI model, but because this is the Win7 version with the new Haswell chips, all I saw were the 2OC-22, 24, 26US etc. Nothing about 077. So my guess is that the only difference would be that this one doesn't have the raid option, and thus has 2 HDD/SD bays and where the primary drive sits now is where I should be putting the SSD. Couldn't find any step by step info as to whether or not I'd need to change the order of boot up in the BIOS, but I'd assume I would need DVD/CD drive set to #1 for installing OS from disc, and then SSD as #2 and HDD as #3. Also, any real benefit in replacing the HDD at some point (which will now be used as storage I presume) with another SSD in the future? If so, do they need to be the same speed, or since it's not raid it doesn't really matter? Thanks again for reading this and I apologize for the lengthy post.

Is it k to change the screen refresh rate on the gt60 2oc? I think think the 59hz default refresh rate is causing problems with skyrim so i raised it to 60. It the gt60 lcd even 60hz compatible?

Hey guys I am super excited to get my msi gt60 2OC-024US tomorrow. I am however getting a bit confused as to how I should approach updating the bios for this laptop/notebook. Do I just download it from the msi gt60 2oc webpage and update it that way? Or is there a different way to do it? and which one do i download because there are 2 bios updates on the webpage currently or do I download both? Also I know your not supposed to download live update 5 for this laptop as it doesn't work on notebooks only motherboard but is there something similar to live update that can help automate the process for me?

Thanks again so much for your help guys.

You can download the BIOS and EC from MSI's website first, and then run the Windows update utility.
Live Update 5 is for MSI's motherboard/VGA products and not intended for notebook products therefore do not use it.
The updates are simple to use, simply run the FLASH file and go from there.
If you have the machine and still have questions then feel free to ask me later, thanks.

Heya, I'm new to these forums but I have encountered something quite strange. I recently bought my gt70 and when I first bought it everything worked fine, my fps on league of legends Max settings was around about 180fps normally, now, (two or 3 days later) it doesn't run as fast at all, it only runs at about 40-49 frames per second on the maximum settings. I have a firewall installed and antispyware. Does anyone have any help for me?

    Welcome to NBR!,
Are both FPS you mentioned while plugged into power, you do get lower performance when running on battery. If you've seen the FPS drop while plugged into power you can check your Windows Power settings to make sure you are on Performance mode while plugged in.

Hello, I am new to this forum and frankly to gaming pc's and MSI laptops. I mostly am looking into getting one for the graphics and speed; plus to upgrade from my Asus U46E. I am looking at two models GT60 2OC-022US and GT60 2OC-077US. I have read about heat/fan issues (getting too hot and loudness) and some about 5400 rpm versus 7200 etc. I know I could spend a couples hours reading this whole thread, but if someone would just give me a straight forward review and opinion of which is the better, that would be awesome :D Thanks in advance

You will have to purchase a Super RAID 2 (mSATA) daughter board and replace existing standard SATA daughter board with it in order to support mSATA drives.

You could also move the HDD into the optical bay drive if you dont use the optical drive. You do need a caddy to mount the hard drive in there. That will leave you two open hard drive bays which you can put a SSD in each one then put them in RAID.

Thanks for your answer, but I really need the optical drive. Any other solutions? It can be more expensive, doesn't matter.

    @Kevin: I have 2x Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD's. If I buy the Super Raid 2(mSata) do I need 2x sata-msata adaptors?

There isnt another option if you have SSD's you'd like to install in there since there are only two hard drive bays. Unless you got a USB optical drive and hooked it up when needed.

@ pitto - Switch your bios from uefi to legacy. I just had this issue today while trying to install windows 7 on my new ssd.
Also disable the bios secure boot option.

    Hi,
Sorry if this has been asked before....I've searched and haven't got a definitive answer.

The GT60 2OC-022US has two HDD/SSD bays. If I want to install an SSD to the second bay do I need to buy a mounting bracket? (The metal thing that you screw bare HDDs into and then screw into the laptop)
Or does the laptop have a mounting bracket already in the second slot?

I have one bracket from another laptop but I don't think the screw points are universal so it probably won't fit in the MSI (Dell xps bracket)

Or can the SSD just be installed without a bracket? (Would it diconnect from the SATA connector when it's being moved?)

    Thanks.

    Alright... I purchase the GT60 2OC-022US.

First thing I did was make recovery disks. For this system, it took like 30 mins to make ISOs and then asked me to make 4 disks.

I want to install a SSD as my primary HD. Learning from the challenges of the countless people on this beloved forum.

I remove the default 1TB drive and place my SSD in it's slot.
I turn the computer on and it tells me "No media found". So, I give it a reboot.

So, I see Ken's post where he suggests pressing F11. So, I press F11 and get the boot menu, but I have no option to select CD/DVD.
So, I reboot again. I get into the BIOS (I am not sure what gets you into the BIOS -- i've tried F2, INS, and DEL [I think its DEL]). I disable legacy, and save/restart. I now press F11 and I have the option to boot from CD/DVD. But it tells me that the disk is bad.

So at this point I am thinking coaster or the MSI burn recovery application didn't work. I put the old drive back in and boot up windows. I examine the content of the disk in windows explorer and it looks like windows files are on the first disk. I figure I'll run recovery application again, this time I'll have it create a bootable USB drive.

I am not sure where to go from here. I am gonna try the bootable USB drive. But, I'd really like to have recovery disks. Am I missing a step in getting the computer to read those disks? (e.g. bios config, key press, or something). When you boot up from those recovery disks, what is supposed to happen? I've searched high and low and I've yet to find out what to expect or how these work. Everyone uses the F3 (system partition method).

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Thanks!
