Maybe it was something else you installed? Look at the startup list.

No, it's definitely not. I think it might have something to do with Optimus, because before, during and after the login screen the power button keeps changing colors way more than it normally did.

I tried this and it would not let me merge them. I am still trying to figure out why the MSI recovery disks created a separate partition for 89gig anyway. My MSI 840 drive was 256 gig and it separated then into drives of 133 gig (c:drive) and 89 gig (d:drive) without any prompting. That is find but the issue now is combining the partitions. There is a partition of 300 mb in between the C and D drives and if I am understanding it correctly the drives being merged need to be right next to each other. Well the partition in between them is causing a problem and it seems I can't do anything about that.

I have seen some software that allows you to put unallocated space to the the C drive but of course there is nothing free for that.

To clarify my partition is set for my 89 gig and when I could not get it to work I was looking for other options and found Partition Assistant that shows on youtube you can can merge unallocated partitions

If you're looking for a hybrid drive check out the new Western Digital Black²
    Its a 120GB SSD + 1TB HDD in one 2.5" drive.

The one you linked may be a good choice depending on your use. As a main drive its better then a regular HDD, but not as good as a SSD. As a secondary drive you wont take advantage of the SSD portion, a regular HDD would be better.

The western digital is nice but very expensive, a 256GB SSD would make a lot more sense for most people or even a standard 2.5" drive and a SSD considering the number of slots in the MSI.

    Hi guys!

Rafael here from the Philippines. I'm going to the US for a couple of weeks and I'm ordering an MSI GT60 2OC-022US with 256G Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD upgrade from GenTechPC. It's my first gaming laptop purchase (well, first laptop actually) and I'm pretty excited about it!

Been going in and out of this thread for a while, and my apologies if this has already been covered, but I'm looking for info on the exact physical dimensions of the GT60 2OC. Here are specs from 2 sources that I've found:

Official MSI product page ( MSI Global GT60 2OC)
    (L) 395 x (W) 267 x (H) 55mm
    (L) 15.55 x (W) 10.51 x (H) 2.16"

GenTechPC product page ( MSI GT60 2OC-022US NV GTX770M, Intel 4th Gen Haswell CPU - GenTech PC)
    (L) 380 x (W) 260 x (H) 45mm
    (L)14.97 x (W) 10.24 x (H) 1.77"

As you can see, the MSI product page lists it as ~15mm longer, ~6mm wider, and ~10mm thicker (I know that the product is quite uniform all around in length and width, and the thickest part is at the back end). So which one is it? Could anyone of you with a GT60 2OC measure your laptop and validate the specs above? I would do it myself, but unfortunately the MSI retailers that I've been to here so far do not carry this model.

I'm asking for the exact specs because I'm looking to buy a laptop bag as well. Particularly, I'm looking at the Tom Bihn Empire Builder messenger bag and an accompanying Tom Bihn Brain Cell to house the actual laptop and fit inside the Empire Builder.

Empire Builder: Empire Builder - 3 years of R&D went into this laptop briefcase - TOM BIHN
Brain Cell: Horizontal Brain Cell - Our Hard-Sided Laptop Case - TOM BIHN

Admittedly, the ~10-15mm difference is very small, and definitely negligible when it comes to the Empire Builder. But maybe not so for the Brain Cell with its snug-fit, sleeve-type design, and I'm not sure how much stretch it has. As such, it is offered in several sizes and I'd like to know if there is one that would fit the GT60 2OC (or should I decide to buy other sleeves).

Many thanks all and looking forward to be a proud owner real soon!

    Hey guys,

Long Time reader of this forum first time replier.

I recently just purchased the MSI GT60 2oc-024US from XoticPc and am really excited and anxious to get it. I did have some questions though regarding to what I should do when I receive the laptop:

    1. What is the initial setup process like? Ex.: What drivers or updates do I need to download when I get the device first thing?

    2. How does windows 8.1 work so far with this laptop? And should I update to windows 8.1 or wait for it to become more stable?

    3. What are some recommended programs or software I should download? Ex.: Gpu-z or msi afterburner...

    4. How good is the overall battery life on this machine based on normal non-gaming study work? I will be using this for college as well so I hope it has good enough battery life.

    5. What is the number one issue most people are having with this laptop?

    6. Should I charge my laptop fully when I get it or should it be ready to go out of the box?

If you could answer these questions or direct me to a page in this thread where they are answered I would very much appreciate it. Also if you have any other recommendations please let me know.

    Thanks.

    Hello,

I have a GT60-2OC and have been resisting the Windows 8.1 update prompt to this day. Do you think I should update? Is it problem-free for this computer? It seems like MSI won't be providing up-to-date drivers for Windows 8 anymore so I guess it'd be better to do this update.

If I do get the 8.1, which drivers (and firmware) would I have to update in addition to the obvious Intel VGA and Nvidia drivers? There's 11 different drivers and 2 firmware for 8.1 on MSI's website. Would I basically be installing all of these?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey all!

I just bought an MSI GT60 2OC 22US and am having MASSIVE issues with it. When I first got it, boot times were taking around 1.5 minutes which was completely unexpected and had input lag while typing. I was using it for about 2 or 3 days and then I started having input lag and bam, had a crash. It then decided to do a system refresh, deleted everything, and when it finally turned on, disk usage was at 100%.

I tried running a check disk on my C drive and now it is constantly stuck at 27% for hours and when I try to skip the check disk, it crashes and says it needs to restore to an earlier time. This is a dead laptop and I have no idea what to do or how to solve this. Wasn't expecting this at all..... Wasn't working right from day 1.

You should do BIOS and EC update to the latest version, make sure you update it to the same version prefix.
    7.0K or 5.0K, and EC is 1.507 or 2.507.

Drivers and utilities, download the latest one off Win8.1 section and update them thoroughly, then this should take care of any potential/unforeseen issues that you may have with Win8.1.

I solved this in my GT7020C by setting the Monitor OFF while HDMI cable TV connected.
If I let the setting on DUPLICATE or any other option the image on the TV tears on action scenes.
    Sorry for my bad English.
    Good luck.

The tearing issue is normal, but you can set your TV as primary display and your NB's LCD as the clone from the TV then you can transfer the tearing onto LCD monitor, TV will still be liquid smooth.

I got the same problem, if you check in your Nvidia 3d Settings, you will see that it is set (by default) to Multiple Display performance. If you set it to Single Display performance mode then duplicate the output on your internal AND external displays, it will give you tearing problems (because the wrong mode is selected in Nvidia panel).
The way i could fix it was to set Nvidia on Single Display performance, then set the internal screen to OFF when plugged to HDMI video out= problem solved.

Turning off the LCD screen can be inconvenient to some because they may not be able to see the external if their field of view is limited.

Got my MSI Gt60 20C laptop today, which I bought via Amazon. First thing I did was to install the Samsung EVO 1 TB SSD, and the laptop is so fast.

I am really happy with my purchase. Thanks everyone, as this thread convinced me to buy it.

For any one interested, I am attaching the CrystalDiskMark of the Samsung Evo 1 TB with RAPID ON:

I'll be able to answer you in about 3 days, as I will be doing the testing on MATlab, as I am a heavy matlab user, i'll see if rapid has a noticeable difference especially during loops and Simulink intensive blocks.

Quick questions, as I don't have the time to read all posts here, and the search is not finding it (or my search query sucks):

Can someone point me to a GOOD guide to upgrading this to a new boot drive? I got a SSHD from Seagate. I can't afford to buy extra cables to do it through USB3. I have an external USB2 drive but i think that would take a looooong time to copy, and I don't have a Win8 disc. (It's all hidden on the drive right?)

Or, I'm hoping it's as easy as this... I just burnt the recovery discs (4 DVDs) Can I use these 4 DVDs to re-install everything to a factory state on the new drive??

Thank you all for your time.

You can either use Windows image backup in Control Panel to backup to a external drive, restore to new Seagate and keep all of your programs.

Or use recovery DVDs but it reset to factory settings and you loose all the programs and data files.

    1. The usual Nvidia and that's about it.

    2. 8.1 is fine but not required.

    3. Sounds like you have the right idea and just check everything is functioning normally.

    4. The reviews you have read before buying should give a good idea on the life.

    5. Not sure.

    6. You should charge it up.

    1. What is the initial setup process like? Ex.: What drivers or updates do I need to download when I get the device first thing?
The typical out of box experience, such as creating user name and password, and Windows setup stuff.
Drivers and Windows updates may be necessary since the machine shipped with older drivers from the factory.
Also, be sure to create the factory recovery DVDs using MSI BurnRecovery utility before you do any kind of modification/alternation to the OS, HDD/SSD, and partitions.

    2. How does windows 8.1 work so far with this laptop? And should I update to windows 8.1 or wait for it to become more stable?
You have to do BIOS, EC, and driver updates before switching to Windows 8.1 otherwise there can be lots of stability issues.
If you have done all of the updates needed and ready to switch, then switch early, don't switch later.

    3. What are some recommended programs or software I should download? Ex.: Gpu-z or msi afterburner...
GPUZ is just for informative purposes, and Afterburner allows you to overclock your GPU if you desire a bit of performance increase on your GPU.
Intel XTU can also be used if you wish to overclock your CPU, however use it with caution as it can temporary disable your system from functioning normally.

    4. How good is the overall battery life on this machine based on normal non-gaming study work? I will be using this for college as well so I hope it has good enough battery life.
Battery life averages from 3 to 4 hours depending on how you use it while on battery mode. Note that the graphics will drop dramatically on battery mode therefore do not even bother to play games that may require more horsepower.
    AC mode = 180W power.
    Battery mode = 50W power.

    5. What is the number one issue most people are having with this laptop?
It varies, but there's no common issue that we have seen on the forum.

    6. Should I charge my laptop fully when I get it or should it be ready to go out of the box?
Yes, you should charge it up to 100% fully.

    2. Memtest - RAM test
    3. Prime95 - CPU/RAM test

Thanks for the quick reply. Also do you know which bios I should flash? My computer came without raid (it was the GT60 20c 022us. It came with ahci.) but I recently put in ssd and changed it to raid for sad caching so I'm not sure whether I should download the raid or nonraid bios. Plus for all the 8.1 drivers would you just install them right over the current ones or do I have to wipe? Thanks so much.

Both BIOS offer IDE/AHCI/RAID, the difference between them is the default setting.
7XX is RAID as default, but you can switch among the three.
5XX is AHCI as default, but you can switch among the three.

Thanks but I still have a question. Since I'm currently on raid would I flash the 7xx or would I flash 5xx because my laptop came with ahci?

Also can I just reinstall the updated drivers and utilities over the old ones?

Not recommended because you will need to do FORCE flash.
As stated earlier, you can switch from AHCI to RAID in your current BIOS, there's no need to force to RAID-default BIOS to get RAID.
The existing OS will fail to load the OS if you switch from AHCI to RAID. However, you can try a few tips online that teach you how to convert from AHCI to RAID.
If all else fails, then a clean install will be needed.

If it came with an AHCI and you have installed your own raid setup and you force flash the raid bios then you would default to the raid setting on a bios reset. However you can always just toggle it yourself in that rare occurrence rather than risking a bios flash.

If your drives has RAID array already setup then don't need to worry, BIOS update or anything else won't delete RAID array, your drives stays on RAID forever unless you go into Intel RAID BIOS to delete it. if you flash your BIOS with AHCI all you have to do is just change to RAID in the BIOS and it will recognize the RAID array on both drives right away, no need to recreate RAID array and no date lost.

Hi everyone, it's my first time joining a forum but i found this one very encouraging.
I'm supposed to receive my GT70 20C-059US in a couple of days and wasn't sure what to do first. I went through the thread and it answers most of my questions but some things got me confused (ie RAID and BIOS flash) as I'm not a computer geek.
My question is what should i do first considering I bought a 250GB SSD Samsung 840 which i need to install (I have no experience in doing so but will read the manual and use the software that comes with it) and set as boot drive for OS and games since the notebook has a 750GB HDD. Should i update windows and drivers before i install it? A step by step explanation is highly appreciated.
Apologies for repetition since this has been asked several times during the thread but it's easier to just read the reply to this and apply the tips and recommendations.
    Thanks in advance

That's so great. I'm getting the exact same one. Hopefully it'll be here before the middle of January. I want to add an SSD too but it'll probably void the warranty and it was much too expensive to upgrade it when I ordered it. Can't wait to see your responses and updated on your newest acquisition

Create Recovery DVDs using MSI BurnRecovery utility first, and switch out the HDD with SSD.
Upon booting, press and hold F11 to bring up boot menu, select CD/DVD to boot from with disc 1 of Recovery DVD set.
Use Recovery to restore the OS onto the new SSD.

Warranty is not void in the US if you break the sticker, however any damages caused during the upgrade process will then void your warranty.

Thanks. But can you tell me which bios to flash. I'm scared I might flash the wrong one and brick my laptop or something.

Also do I need to update bios before updating the firmware?

And is anyone else getting issues with the windows 8.1 Synaptics driver? Whenever I update the driver the touchpad keeps disabling by itself. I reverted back to the stock Synaptics driver for now.

    Hey guys,

I'm an owner of the GT70H-80M4811B (8GB RAM, GTX780M, i7-4700m MQ) and out of all games I played on it far I'm having really high temps in Far Cry 3 (high settings), Shadow Warrior 2013 (high settings) and Hard Reset (ultra settings). It usually stays at 90c constantly. I played FC3 for about 10 hours under this circumstances, 2 hours a day. Bought Hard Reset today and noticed the temps and since Shadow Warrior is build on the same engine, the result wasn't any different. Should I worry about these? Never owned a laptop before so I'm not familiar with the heat stuff. It's 1 month old and it has 2 years warranty, I didn't repaste it either.

Thought this might be the right place to ask such things :)

90C is a bit high, but it is acceptable.
If you repaste using IC diamond then the temp may drop about 5 to 10 Celsius.

If you are unsure don't bother. Just toggle that raid setting yourself if you ever have to reset the bios. Otherwise the setting will stick and behave like the raid bios.
