You have to remember that on the HDD that you are substituting with the SSD you have your recovery image. It is a hidden partition where your recovery OEM windows is installed. Instead of wiping your HDD you have to image it with an imaging program like Drive Image. Google on the web to find good tutorial. It's pretty simple.
Samsung also has a free imaging software but I think it works only with Samsung drives.
    Cheers

There should be a program on it already to create the disks for you.

Guys, I'm looking to upgrade my HDD of my GT60 2OC-022us.
Looking at the SSD it looks like the best option is the Samsung 840 EVO, right? Is there another option?

And there are 3 options, the single SSD, with Desktop Bundle Kit and Notebooke Bundle Kit. I see the desktop version is cheaper, is there any difference?

    I prefer a 240-256 GB.

    Thanks

I know the differences on paper, but I want to know if I am going to have problems if I buy the basic model instead of the notebooke kit.

And also is there another SSD to consider?

I'm going to buy a GT70 and have questions on upgrading at a later date.

I hope to buy at a price point of under $2,000 and do the "ultimate" upgrade as dollars, time and expertise permit.
Main use of the machine will be ACAD rendering and video editing w/ Vegas Pro 12.

    1. Can primary drive config be changed from HDD to 3xSSD Raid at later date (daughter board)?
    2. SPECS (config options) for ODD CADDY (possable 2 or 3 x SSD Raid config? Daughter board config options?
    3. Bootable from ODD (caddy w/SSD)?
    4. Can secondary drive be changed from HDD to SSD (config options)?

Any help or reference to links would be greatly appreciated,

    Thanks

ps: What a great forum! What a great find!

I have a question. I've bought Sandisk Ultra Plus 256gb SSD and it permits firmware updates(their tool creates bootable USB or ISO), but I can't boot from it in uefi or legacy mode.
It seems that this is the same thing as with any linux distro. Manufacturer somehow "locked" bios.
Can anyone give me an advise?

    1. If MSI permits the sale of such daughter board then it can be done.
    2. You can get ODD caddy easily if you plan to use 3 standard bays in a RAID array configuration.
    3. It is bootable.
    4. Yes, it can be changed from HDD to SSD.

Supposedly, you will need to disable UEFI mode and switch to Legacy.
Then tap on the F11 key to bring up the boot menu, and then select CD/DVD to boot from, of course the disc must be inserted already.
The BIOS isn't locked on this feature.

    Hello to my new family!

I have just ordered a GT60 2OC-022 and am very excited about it. Should be here next week. My plan is to buy a SSD drive, likely an OCZ Vector Series VTR1-25SAT3-256G 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC with the 2 year warranty. Below is a link to this SSD I'm thinking of buying. Is our laptop and chosen SSD compatible (ie Will it work with our hardware? With Windows 8? Will it fit in our case?) Is there another SSD that you would recommend?

As a new owner, any advice about our glorious laptop is much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

No problems whatsoever since it fits without the adapter like the 840 pro. Both are 2,5 for 7mm.
I always stick with samsung since they keeep getting very good reviews.
    I personally have a 840 pro 256 GB and a 830 256GB fitted in my GT60-2OC.

Excellent! Thank you for the reply. I will definitely check out the Samsung SSDs

I use to love opening up desktop towers and tinkering around in them. It has been a while and I'm due for a new computer. Decided to go with a laptop this time, mostly for portability. I've never really opened up and tinkered around in a laptop before so it should be fun

I'm slowly making my way through the 126 pages of this thread. If anyone would like to link another "must read" thread regarding our laptop, then please share

Heh, well the MSI is a good introduction to notebooks with everything being nice and accessible. Just don't get spoiled as most notebooks are no where near as nice to work in.

Awaho!! For once luck is on my side :D

I built a desktop gaming computer way back in 2005 using a MSI mobo. Over the years I added and switched some parts here and there (a few GPUs and a couple HDDs). That computer has been so good to me and MSI earned my loyalty with her. When I get my GT60 in I'm not sure what I'm going to do with her. I'm thinking of stripping her down and mounting the mobo on my wall as a trophy to remember her by. I get chills just thinking about all the hours and hours of gameplay that baby played for me. She's the reason I went with a MSI laptop. Never gave me any problems I didnt bring upon myself. Alas, lately she is struggling to play some games or simply doesnt meet requirements to play them.

I'm just as excited to play around with Windows 8. It is completely new to me and I'm interested to see why there are so many mixed feelings about it

    Thanks Kevin,
I appreciate you taking the time to give me some help.

I'll be ordering my computer from GENTECH in the next day or two and your help will one of the contributing factors to my decision as to who gets my money.

Looks like the GT70 2OD-064US with a few tweeks will do the job.

Thanks again and have a great day.

Has anyone experienced problems with their GTX 770m as in suddenly the screen starting to shake and picture getting distorted? I fix it by putting the display to sleep and awaking it but it doesn't seem right. Maybe the GPU overheats or something?

The 770M is not driving the internal display. The intel chipset is doing that.

Not exactly sure what you meant by that mate but i'm quite positive the problem's in the 770m now. I was playing WoW: Pandaria on Ultra until it happened again so what I did was check the temp and it was pretty decent - ~69-70 Celcius. This time I fixed it by closing WoW so that the laptop can switch to using the integrated graphics. That kind of scares me tbh, i'm not even sure the tech guys here can "fix" a 770m

Next time it happens, see if just Alt-Tabbing or going to the Start screen fixes it. Very rarely some games for me will go all stuttery and weird - hasn't happened for a while so can't describe it too well/compare it to your description, but maybe it's what you're getting, it happened with my old laptop with a GT 525M too so it could just be something rare that happens with nVidia cards. Although I only remember having it happen with this laptop once, so if you're getting it more often it could be a different thing...

It's happening almost every time I play something for 4 hours or more. Alt-tabbing doesn't fix it but switching to the integrated GPU fixed it that's why i'm thinking the problem is in the 770m :/ What's scary is that the last time i saw the screen going that crazy was the last days of my desktop nvidia's life

The intel chip is handles all the display outputs, when rendering 3d it passes along the rendering tasks to the nvidia GPU, which sends back the completed frame which the intel chip takes and then outputs to your monitor. That's why I say it's the intel chip that handles the display outputs.

However if you are getting corruption in 3d titles (and 3d alone) then it could be the nvidia chip.

    Hello,
guys i need some help regarding performance of our fav GT70-20C model. My GT70 have some performance issues and I can't figure out how to deal with them. The most annoying and biggest problems are lags(freezes) which last about 1-2 seconds in games like .... diablo 3(running ultra) and League Of Legends (every team fight starts for me with 1-2 second freeze). Also the same happens in for example CoD:Ghots (multiplayer, normal details). For a fun fact, BF4(high details) runns quite smooth. I've tried to set 770M for every of above games the in Nvidia 3d setup, but it doesn't solve the issue.
Maybe someone has a similar problem and found a solution ??

Below I'm also posting my results form Heaven Unigine 4.0 and 3Dmark 11, which look quite low for Gt70-20C. What do you think ?
    3Dmark 11 basic - 85923 Ice Storm
    3Dmark 11 basic - 14492 Cloud Gate
    3Dmark 11 basic - 3378 Fire Strike

    Heaven - settings Ultra (1600x900, AAx8, windowed)

Try right clicking on the program, select the run with option, make sure it's using the 770m on not the onboard graphics.

Is it possible to use an ssd as a cache and for storage at the same time? For example if I have a 64gb ssd and dedicate 32gb to caching, would I be able to store personal files on the leftover 32 gb? Does Intel Rapid Storage Tech. make the ssd invisible?

Yeah, it could be something wrong with the 770M, so you might have to get it fixed under warranty.

Do you have an SSD and a HDD, with the games being installed on the HDD? If so, it could be the power saving that the HDDs have - after about 60 seconds or so (maybe less) the HDD spins down, and so the next time things have to be read it has to spin up again (which takes a few seconds). To stop it, get CrystalDiskInfo, go Function -> Advanced Feature -> AAM/APM Control -> Select the HDD -> Disable APM.

My WD MyBook had that problem, try seeing if there is updated Firmware for you drive, mine had an updated one that fixed this problem.

Hey guys i want to switch from ahci to raid. Can someone show me the proper steps? I dont have a windows 8 installation dvd but I assume that can change to raid in bios and then reinstall my os using msi's burn recovery. Am i correct? Do i need original windows 8 installation disk? Thanks.

I am pretty sure the backup disk should let you install once in raid mode, but I suppose worst case since you will have backed everything up is that you have to go back to AHCI and install and find an ISO.

yes thats how mine is setup with cache mode in intel srt.

you have to boot to bios and set it to raid mode . so you need to install intel SRT first so the driver is their or you will get bsod if the driver isnt present on boot up.

    Hello people,

Me and my partner each have the GT70-2OC. She recently did the free update to Win8.1. Since she's upgraded, the orange light indicating the gpu is on has been on non-stop. How can we switch it back to how it was before - white light when not gaming, orange when 770m activates?

I only saw crazy high temps with a 4.2ghz quad and gtx680m with a 60% overclock which I could at least benchmark stably.

Greetings, guys I like most hardcore gamers dislike windows 8 and therefore I searched and found out an msi gt 60 2oc version with the factory settings set to Windows 7 instead of 8, here is the version's name: "GT60 2OC-077US" and the link: Amazon.com: MSI G Series GT60 2OC-077US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black): Computers & Accessories

The problem is that this laptop has 12GBs of ram divided into one stick of "8GB" and another stick of "4GB" unlike the previous version who had 3x "4GB" sticks, wouldn't that cause instability and lower performance, how could the factory produce such a thing? And what do the hardcore users think of mixing unequal rams?

Many laptops have ram configured this way, shouldn't cause instability or lower performance. Ram benchmarking would find unequal size sticks slower but the difference is not perceptible.

I don't think i've been over 60C, though i'm runing the CPU undervolted at stock clocks(would undervolt the GPU if there was a free BIOS tuner :p) and the most demanding game on my list is FC3

find 95*C hard to believe with turbo on . never seen mine over 60*C with turbo going.

only way i could see 95*C happening is if someone overvolted the cpu for no reason just to slander the laptop for what ever reason.

i run my laptop in anywhere from 19*C to 23*C room temps. with a overclocked gpu. cpu @stock.

You failed to mention that these temps are common with many other gaming laptops. My cpu gets up to 80C with the fan set to 70% speed; this is not with max fan speed. Also just like any other laptop, sometimes the thermal grease isn't properly installed. The problems with this laptop have been repeated in the past and will be repeated later on as well. However they can all be resolved if you learn how to fix it yourself and no doing such things will not void the warranty if done properly.
