it depends of your country : In US it seems to void the warranty, In France where I live it's allowed assuming you just Add Ram or install SSD
overall, this sticker in a barebone for gamer is a pure scandal. It might exist just to focus the attention of service engineer on the fact that the laptop has been opened, and bad operation could have been done, but nothing more

I'm new here but I've got a GT70 2OC 770M running with OpenSuse 12.3 in legacy mode. No dual boot because no linux rom will run in UEFI mode for now. The are some things you shut know.
    - run the latest kernel (3.11.xx)
    - run the latest Nvidia drivers (325.15)
    - delete xconf.conf
    - delete nvidia-xconf
    - delete nvidia-settings
    - enable KMS mode
    - disable nouveau
    - disable NetworkManager
    - uninstall pm-utils
    - install laptop-mode-tools

    Good luck

Has anyone downgrade the bios from windows 8 (w8_E1763IMS.50E) to windows 7 (E1763IMS.10E).
Q: how did you do that?

Hello. I'm a new proud owner of the GT70. I has a quick question. Is there a way to change the movie icon from windows media play to a different playing like VLC? Thanks in advance.

FYI I did reimage the os because i bought the new samsung 840 pro ssd. I did reload all drivers and apps and did windows update and scm is working great but i can't seem to find an option to change the player.

Hello and good day. Welp, finally got switched over on my gt70 065us from windows 8 to windows 7 ultimate. Its like coming back from almost falling over the edge. Scary. So being the amateur that I am I had some questions. I wanted to update the bios so I could try and overclock this beast a little. My problem is that MSI says that going from a windows 8 bios to windows 7 bios could brick my machine. What do? I downloaded XTU 3.2 but I get no option for changing anything except whats in my screenshot. i hear 4.2 is out and works with an updated bios only so im thinking that might give me options. I also read something about an unlocked bios where clock options were setup there. also if anyone has a page I could go read that would be great. kthxbai. XTU.png

While the bios files are called "windows 8" or "windows 7" there is no actual relation to what OS can be run on them.

Well, I just took the plunge with Pro-Star.... They were the cheapest, and they build and test your system themselves before shipping. So, that sounds good.

It took me 4 weeks and two $1,000 computers returned (Acer & Lenovo), 16 hour days every day of research to make my choice.
I wanted to go with the Sager because of their port positions and extra ports and upgradability in GPU, but I just couldn't stand everything else about them. Their best really was the Clevo P151SM1, if only it had a backlit keyboard, a 4th ten key row and was 17 inch. I was thinking about the NP8275 but the breakable gloss edges and the trackpad and buttons turned me off. I would have liked to have gone with the NP8295 but again, trackpad and buttons just terrible.

What made me choose the MSI is the:

    - Superior Keyboard, I type alot.
    - Superior Touchpad & buttons position, size, functioning & design.
    - Better Audio

The only "minus's" that I see are the ports being in the front side instead of back side, no need VGA, and could use a regular sized DisplayPort and a Firewire, like the Sager has, oh and the worthless USB 2.0 ports. Just give us all 3.0 ports.

Hopefully everything will be good. If I could combine parts of Sager and MSI, I would have my perfect computer, but such is the flawed world.... :(

I thought about getting the MSI Barebones with the GTX 780M in it, but I decided I liked the better keyboard and warranty better. I'm actually spending $800 more than I wanted and should have (going to have to owe someone when it was supposed to be temp), but there was simply nothing I could do, I tried and tried. Hopefully it will be worth it.

Will get the Laptop the beginning of next week.

The keyboard in the barebone and retail are the same apart from the barebone not having the different coloured LEDs (only blue).

    Are you friggen kidding me?

So, was it the previous years then that used a different keyboard? Because when I watched the video from one of your guys sites, it was a different model but apparently the same, the keyboard was actually like the Sagers, not the SteelSeries keyboard. Yes, the lights was blue, and that would have been okay with me, but it was not the SteelSeries keyboard for the barebones....

Are you actually telling me the barebones IS still the SteelSeries just blue???

If so FREAK!!!! Man I wish vendors would have the correct info on their sites.
Another issue I discovered on my own is every single vender uses one of the other models "pics" for the Sager NP8275.
The 75 has the mic on top with the webcam, but the pics show it down below.

Yes barebones are use SteelSeries keyboard with blue LED but the name SteelSeries are only license to MSI branded versions. therefore, barebones are not allow to advertise SteelSeries. Same to the Dynaudio speakers.

I don't think you need to update BIOS for XTU. Update BIOS are the same for Windows 8 and Windows 7. the only difference is at Boot menu you use UEFI for Windows 8 and EUFI with CSM or Legacy for Windows 7.

Well bummer... Life sucks then you die. Oh well, the 770 GPU will be good enough I guess.
I could have got the 780 in barebones for only like $75 more than what I paid for what I got in the branded version. Of course, I wouldn't have had the better warranty, metal casing, and gold audio plugs, which likely still pushes me that way anyway. So, I guess I'm happy still.

BTW, it's been mentioned several times in this thread that a person could fresh install a Win8 OS and the OEM key would be used, is that correct?
Further, does it actually matter what Win8 OS is used? Because, they weren't clear on that, and they clearly weren't talking about the backup disk each time they mentioned this (seemed anyway).

For example, if I get Win8.1 in some way like RTM or otherwise, can I install it and it will use my OEM key, and I'll be fine and activated?
I want to do a fresh install of 8.1 eventually, have that as my install disk etc. instead of even ever dealing with Win8, so is that doable?
I would prefer not to buy a Retail 8.1 since I already bought the OS, but don't want to simply update but have a fresh bare system free of bloat, potential issues, etc.

You'll be able to update to 8.1 for free when it launches I believe. The 770M is not a slow card yes and in future you can upgrade it if you want.

Ya, I know I can "update" to 8.1.... I just would rather have an 8.1 disk so in case I ever have to restore, or if I want to just have a fresh system, I can just install 8.1 instead of 8. So, I'm wondering if I can install an 8.1 like RTM etc. and my OEM key will be recognized and it will be activated? I don't want to buy a 8.1 if I can help it since I already got 8 with the system.

Ya, I know it's not "slow", was just thinking out loud. As to "upgrading" it in the future.... I thought we couldn't, that it's "soldered" to the board or something? It's the reason why no vendor allows selecting the 780 during checkout as an upgraded option. You actually have to buy the version that has the 780, which is by the way $600 more (unless you get the barebones), $1,399 compared to $1,999 to upgrade to the 780 version.

So, are you actually saying that the 770 CAN be upgraded? I don't get it?

Hello everyone. My first post here.

After days of research and reading countles magazines, forums, blogs, test sites etc... i have just ordered the thing! A gt60 with 750 hd+ 256ssd and 770m. I dont know if it was wise or folly to do so... Well... half part of my brain still thinks a desktop pc would be the better choice...

    I have two questions(

    1) which updates should i do first. Win8 updates? Or should i do driver updates.

    2) will there be performance issues whit playing games or watching hd films when i plug it to a 65 inch tv?

Thank you.have a nice day. (Sorry if i have double posted,my first one doesnt seem to be here yet. Typical noob mistakes)

The GT series use an MXM card and you will be at least able to put a 780M in there later or if the next generation is compatible (and the heatsinks too) then move to the next gen.#

When 8.1 is released you should be able to grab an ISO and install it.

Strange.... If if it is upgradeable, how come they don't allow that as a configuration option?

So, I can use "any" 8.1 ISO (or 8) and it will be activated without me doing anything?
    Thanks for the help.

    Mother flipper...!!!

Any fix for the "Wireless Dropping" issue....?

Default out of the box, the wireless is always dropping. This same thing happened with two other computers even different cards and systems, and it's apparently happening to lot's of people, something with Win 8 and apparently likely certain routers.
Anyone have a fix? Yes, updated all Windows updates, went to the Intel site and updated the wireless to the latest driver.

BTW, this is the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 card.... :(

Took me 2 days, but I finally got Windows 7 up and running on my shiny new GT60 20C - of course, the only application not compatible with Windows 8.x is the one I need for work... I've lost a considerable amount of hair and some eyesight, we'll see if it's worth it :)

At the moment, I'm trying to find the right driver for the Wi-Fi and Ethernet cards, DHCP doesn't seem to work no matter what duplex settings I use, I don't get an IP from my router and Wi-Fi only works with 1 router out of 5, probably due to its newness.

This is frankly unacceptable.... Where is the quality control these days?

You're right, the newer wireless cards apparently won't work for maybe half the routers.
I'm using an ISP's router at the moment, something that's most designed to work for everyone, and three computer makers with different cards ALL have dropping issues with Win 8.

I've heard people have been able to find working drivers when they install Win 7, but some don't work still either.

Can anyone help....? I mean, one of the reasons I got the Intel because people were reporting this issue with the Killer Wireless.
    Heaven help me. Just unacceptable!!!

I see you are considering the same thing as me, if GT60/70 isnt better solution instead of GS70 :D
I changed my mind to GT60 2OC ... GS70 is lighter thats true, but its not perfect laptop and for the same price i can get "easy" upgradable GT60 with more powerful graphics(770M) than GS70s(765M)...

I've been having the wireless issues too. I made a change to a power plan setting yesterday, although in Win7 it was working properly. Go to power options-edit plan settings-change advanced power settings-wireless adapter settings-power saving mode-set both of them to 'maximum performance'. Not sure if I had problems when plugged in and so far it seems to be fine, but if your wireless drops even when plugged, then I don't know what to say. Windows 8 is awful at times.

@Jakey It's a very good gaming laptop, runs anything on high or even max. Should be fairly futureproof, but not for max settings.

Hey guys, I've been having a sound problem. For example, when I am on skype using either the internal mic or the one on my USB Headset, I often get this loud static noise that sounds like feedback from my speakers that the person I'm Skype calling can also hear. So far the only way I haven gotten around this was to set all playback to play through my headset(i.e. both the communication playback and the default playback). I noticed that when I disabled the High Def Realtek audio speakers the sound stopped. However, this is very inconvenient as I would prefer not to have to use my headset every single time I am on a skype call. How do I get around this loud and annoying static feedback sound my speakers are making?

Ya, the wireless dropping issue occurs plugged in also....

I'm trying out 8.1 RTM (btw just installing it wouldn't see your OEM key and activate, likely have to do other things?)

    1. The wireless still won't work
    2. Pretty much ALL installed utilities/drivers when you try to Open/Run their utilities all say "so and so has Stopped Working", and they won't open. The Nvidia one for sure is for 8.1 also, so I'm not sure the problem. Maybe I installed something wrong, or in the wrong order?

Can anyone give me links (or tell me) to all the compatible MSI drivers/utilities that will work in Win 8.1?

Also, the EQ version of Sound Blaster Cinema wouldn't install/run? Just didn't do anything?
Do I install the AP version first?

I've read somewhere that dropping issues are affecting all last gen Intel cards. The temporary solution is to disable the 5 GHz band, and if problems still occur switch back to 145 mbps N mode.

There are no guaranteed drivers, except Nvidia and Intel. Most driver s work when you upgrade from 8 to 8.1

    I Installed both.

Windows 8.1 hasn't been publicly released yet (October 18), which is why it won't activate. Where did you get your copy, if I might ask?

How do I disable the 5 GHz band on the Killer Wireless-N 1202? I can't find that option in the driver.

Also, does anyone else has issues with DHCP not giving out an IP on the Ethernet E2200?

I was having network issues too because I tried to tweak the killer network app/disable network monitoring. After installiing the killer driver from MSI's website and letting the app run normally, letting it have all the network/monitoring rights it wanted, I've had no wifi drops or any other network issues.

Interestingly, DHCP works now with the Ethernet router and with Wi-Fi as well, not sure what happened, I didn't change anything.

I only use the 2 drivers from the v2 1.0.25.1224 package which I got thanks to Driverextractor, I eliminated the Manager completely (I had the same issues when the Manager was installed, so that wasn't the original cause).

I'll keep monitoring my connection to see when/what happens when it goes down. My Wi-Fi issues are probably due to the unreliable routers and the distance as they are not in my apartment.

I was not up to date on the "UEFI vs. Legacy BIOS" topic so it took me a while to understand why Windows 7 was failing to install. Now I have Windows 8 on the original HDD and Windows 7 on my SSD, both up and running, I can choose between them in the Windows boot menu.

Just a few pointers for those who want to install Windows 7 using a USB flash drive on the GT60 2OC:

    - Windows 7 needs USB 2.0 in order to be installed from the USB drive
    - the USB drive can only boot in Legacy and UEFI with CSM modes
    - if you want to use UEFI instead of Legacy, the Windows 7 USB drive has to be modified, see UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows
    - you need a FAT32 formatted USB drive under UEFI, NTSC USB drives will only boot in Legacy mode
    - in Legacy mode only MBR (Master Boot Record) drives will boot, you won't be able to boot (or see) Windows 8 on the default HDD
    - the OEM-supplied drive uses the new GPT scheme, and if you add/convert another GPT drive with Windows 7 (without removing the original drive) it will still contain the Windows boot menu so you'll need it to choose between Windows 8 on the original HDD and Windows 7

Feel free to correct me or add to the list.

Alright.... Finally have "sort of" solved this thing.

    1. Set 802.11n channel width for band 2.4mhz to - AUTO
    2. Set Roaming Aggressiveness to - HIGHEST
    3. The wireless has been now connecting to 802.11g "g" not "n", and I've had perfect connection.

Clearly 802.11n "n" is the problem.... Now, it could be that my router is simply selecting "g" for the moment, I don't know, there isn't a setting in Advanced for disabling 802.11n in the Intel Wireless-AC Dual Band 7260.

Anyone know how to disable the "n" in the 7260?
Did setting the "Auto" above simply make it connect to the best network?
I've set these settings before and they did nothing. Of course, I was still connecting to the "n" network, not "g" so I'm guessing the "n" network is the problem with certain routers and intel and otherwise cards especially on Win8 (some also apparently on Win7 depending on driver).

I need to know how to disable the "n" on my end just in case the router and laptop decides to connect to the "n" network again. I can disable through the router, telling it to only use the "b & g" networks, but if this happens in the future like if I travel, or if my roommate who's a jerk decides to change the box login (he doesn't know I've went in, and not telling him because he is a jerk (long story) ), I need to be able to stop my computer using the "n" network.

Anyway, I've confirmed, tested 2 hours now, it's working, not a single noticed drop. But, this is only a workaround, I guess I'm loosing internet speed/strength by not connecting to the "n" network?

So INTEL..... Please fix whatever is wrong with your "n" network connection and certain mainstream routers.
Again, I'm on a CenturyLink router now.

Also, I'm using the default Microsoft driver 16.0.0.62..... although, I don't think it matters which I use, since it's clearly the "802.11n" that is at issue, so as long as I don't connect with that, I'm good.

UPDATE..... Installed "InSSIDer for Home" Wireless monitor and it's saying I'm connected to "n" not "g"???
Or is that just telling me what my router is capable of? I don't think so right??? Doesn't make sense, Windows in Task Manager is telling me I'm connected to "g"?

Ya, I figured it out before I saw your post... It is the 802.11n that is at issue, see my post above.
The only problem is, I don't have a "setting" to "disable" Wireless "n" mode, save in the router? The Intel 7260 for some reason doesn't have that option? Any idea?

Not sure what happened the first time around when I installed 8.1 and then the MSI drivers and utilities, but it's not doing that problem I mentioned previous on a re-install.
Although, I haven't installed the Sound Blaster Cinema yet, we will see. Also, is it normal for the EQ version to not actually do anything when you try to run it? Nothing happens?

The problem wasn't activation, it was simply I was under the impression from what others was saying that I could install an ISO and my OEM key would be recognized.
But, I fully cleared all partitions and one was a bios backup partition, so I was wondering if the OEM key was in there?
It's the RTM copy, works fine from WZT.

Well, have installed everything, though I didn't update the bluetooth driver, just used windows default also. Everything seems working this time. 8.1 is better than 8, but maybe only 10%, they could improve more still. Man everythings so fast on an SSD and Win8 though, it's cool.

BTW... Those wanting to know, the 90% Glossy Gamut Display is NICE.... I'm glad I didn't go cheaper. People are on drugs wanting Matte screens. I don't think any are in construction or on the beach in the direct sun, otherwise no point. Glossy actually works better outside if in the shade because matte diffuses more, and inside you just don't notice glare or even see it most of the time, and the clarity over-rides even if you do. It seems glare is most seen in the store, not home working. I don't even see it.

So, got my new MSI GT70 20C-065US and everything seems to be working, though can't test the Widi or Bluetooth and haven't/can't test every port, but everything else appears to be working, and working on Win 8.1 RTM.
Oh, I did find one "bug" other than my above wireless "n" stress, and that that at least one of the ports wouldn't create an Image Restore on my USB Flash Drive. Did everything to try and get it to work, including a full format (which took forever) etc. The only thing I didn't try was other ports yet, and there is the possibility that the Drive itself simply wasn't designed to allow creating an image or won't work with the MSI Recovery Software? Thoughts?

I just got gt70 770 nvidia, I wonder what means 2CO? Is that my model?

I have question, where is the win 8 serial number?

I have read that if you press f3 you can restore win to original state? is that true? is the win written somewhere on ssd drive?

also one of my usb ports did not want to work well with my usb 3 external wd hard drive, but now it wirks aftr I updated my WD usb HD firmware

I love the display, it is matte, and I dont see anything wrong with it. I am a photoshop guy and just love it. It is not bad at all.

THe keyboard flexes a bit, some people are really sensitive about that, But I dont care.

Battery is really great, it lasts reallly long.

    Everything is cool

ANd one more thing, the laptop is really light!!!! It weighs less that HP envy 17, I bought 2.5 years ago. That is just amazing, but the power adapter is too big, but not too heavy

Well....... It looks like I spoke too soon yet again, though not as bad as last time.

The Wireless even in "g" mode still "drops" for a little bit then comes back on. But, it only seems to do it about once every 30-60 minutes. I did a download large file test this time, and this is how I know it dropped because the download failed, couldn't find host anymore, after checking the log. It tried like 5 times before giving up, so I know the connection was lost.

Maybe I will install the latest driver and see if I can have a good or better connection with these settings?

Can anyone list what absolutely necessary "only" Drivers and Utilities are needed to install to have all basic features working?

    Some like...
    Hybrid Power
    SCM
    SuperCharger
    Intel Management Engine
& Intel Rapid Storage Technology I'm not sure about.

I still have a SM Bus Controller, PCI Simple Communications Controller, & PCI Device still showing as needing drivers in Device Manager.

Update, the PCI Device was the "Card Reader".
Update2, the SM Bus Controller was the Intel Chipset
Update3, the PCI Simple Comm was the Intel Management Engine (should likely install MSI's since it's said manufac could change things)

So, those are required by the system....

I'm still curious about some of the others above that I list, are any required?
Like, is SuperCharger required in order to be able to use the USB "charger"?
Does the Intel Rapid Storage improve some things? etc. etc.

FYI, the Keyboard has a "White" lighted keys, including gaming keys if you don't install the KLM lighting utility. Just press the sun button as normal for on/off.

BTW..... I downloaded the GTX 770m from MS Update, which had looks like the latest driver, but the driver installed, but I'm not finding any sort of "config" app?
I'm wondering because the 770 doesn't seem to be running for higher game settings. I put World of Tanks on Max and instead of the 770 kicking in, it still uses the HD and I go down to like 15 fps.???

Weird, so installed the full Nvidia package and now the Nvidia works like it should, including I have a cool Orange power button when it's on. yaaaa....

I was at my wits end trying to figure out why the SPDIF out wasnt working and I wasnt seeing the red light until I stumbled upon this post and tried it....it WORKED! Thanks alot MichaelStone.
....but sheesh....why would MSI/realtek hide the optical out functionality under such an obscure menu?
