Glad I found this thread!

I purchase 2 GT70's on July 2 and have not regretted it. These machines were only meant to be travel companions for wife & I, but these little buggers outperform our quad-core gaming rigs I built a couple years ago. I really didn't expect that kind of power from such a small footprint. Our laptops are now our new desktops & the old desktops, complete /w limited edition GeForce 560Ti 448 cores, are piled up on the floor until I put them on Craig's List. I will be stripping the Samsung 840 Pros from the desktops & replacing the HDD's that came with the GT70. I have almost 20 years of background & hope to be of help on this forum, but I'll be picking your brains as well. :D

hi guys i have a question. i have a GT60 2OC 022US. i ordered it without the super raid 2 setup. i only have the 1 TB hard drive and was planning to install an SSD for the os on the second drive bay. the thing that confuses me is that i need to buy a 3.5 to 2.5 inch drive bay converter to hold the SSD right? but when its in place, i dont think the SSD will be able to reach the port, should i use a sata cable for this? i posted pictures of the inside of my laptop including the how the second drive bay looks. i just want to know how to make the SSD reach the "port".

That's a 2.5" bay, there should have been a bracket in your box to fix it, it gets rotated round compared to the other drive bay.

yeah my bad :D i really need to get in touch with my measurements. i figured out it was a 2.5 inch bay after i posted the question here. lol. i was planning to buy a samsung 830 ssd, would it be possible to install it directly to the vacant drive bay? i did find a bracket looking thingy inside the box, i think its for locking the second drive in place. i was planning to transfer my OS to the ssd from my hdd. what would be the best possible way to do it? i was thinking about making a system image of the os, but im clueless on what to do after that :D

Sorry for repeating my unanswered question but how long does the gt60 2oc battery last on balanced mode? (Moderate usage; youtube, some web surfing)

6.1.0.547 hasn't fixed the problem, although it's *possibly* slightly better.

I'm sure your help will be much appreciated on these forums. A very helpful community, NBR forums. Many users ask around these forums about what laptop to buy and whatnot, problem is, we don't get many users that actually comes back to post feedback about their purchase, and maybe answer some question from others about the notebook. I asked what to buy four years ago, here on NBR. ViciousXUSMC is the user I think, that helped me make my decision. Actually, his review thread about the Asus G50V. That said, Welcome to NBR BeastV10!

hi guys. may i know what the idle temps for your CPU's are? i have the gt60 and i used pherein's fan control program (found on this site) to find out the default fan profile of the laptop and figured that the fan turns off when CPU temps are below 53C. this is the fan speed table.

    default
    46 53 60 67 74 93 100 -- celsius
    0 35 40 45 50 55 66 -- fan speed %

so by default the fan only turns on when cpu temps hit 53C. my cpu idle temps with this default fan configuration is around 54-55C .. is this the same for you guys too? cause i figured it might have something to do with bad thermal pasting. oh and by the way i edited my fan profile using the same program and set it to this.

    personal profile
    46 53 60 67 74 93 100 -- celsius
    30 35 40 45 50 55 66 -- fan speed %

so the fans wont turn off at all. and ever since doing it i got to like 43-45C idle temps on my cpu.

CPU idle : 45c - 51c most of the time.
    GPU idel : 41c- 43c ......

I've never used any programs or whatsoever to set fan profiles yet, but the stock is fine for me for the moment.

oh wow. those idle temps are lower than mine. i've had mine like for a month now,and ever since the first startup, its always been getting idle cpu temps not going below 50c. my gpu idle is alright though. and i've opened the laptop and noticed these sticky patches, like double sided tape looking things in between my heatsinks and other parts inside the laptop, are these the thermal pads? because i've noticed a small tear in one of the pads, maybe that's what's causing the increased temps.

Hello guys! At the end of the month I'm planning on buying a GT70-20C 0008US. I should probably mention that I have to make the purchase in Store, in Canada.

Do you think I'll need any extra protection? Like the two year protection plan from Canada Computers or NCIX? Also, I'm coming from a ASUS G74SX, so I'm wondering if there's anything else I need to know about, like the kinks or anything I should look out for.

    Thanks

So I'm looking to buy an MSI GT60 ONC-022US but I'm not sure where to buy it from. I've had some bad luck before so I'm a little paranoid about manufacturing defects like motherboards crapping out, so normally I'd opt for bestbuy because of their physical presence, however they are currently sold out (and it's unclear when they'll be back in stock). I've heard some iffy statements regarding MSI support which leads me to be cautious with Newegg and Amazon (though they're certainly still the probable prospects).
    Thoughts?

Those are the thermal pads. If the thermal pads have tears or wear, this will affect temps. But not sure how one small tear on one of the pads would contribute to the temps, not significantly, i think. Idle temps for CPU, if they are around 52-55c, you should be just fine. But the lower the better I believe.

    @University of Pi

I strongly suggest going through a reseller online. I've included some MSi reseller links in my post on the first page. You can customize it the way you want, so to fit your needs and pricing. Gentechpc, Xoticpc and Powernotebooks are proven resellers. They also have some guys over here at NBR. You don't have to be afraid of defects if going through these guys, they are very helpful in situations like that. They test the hell out of it before sending you the notebook as so to deliver the full performance the laptop should. Also, there is the option for prolonged warranty if you want. You should get in contact with one of these guys here at NBR. Ken, Justin and Paladin are the usernames if I remember correctly. Meaker too I think. Great guys.
    (Awesome username btw, :D)

@aban714 thanks, was thinking about that route though I'm probably only going stock

    anyone else looking;
Gentech has free upgrades to 16GB of Ram, IC thermal and a 30 day no dead pixel deal right now
Xotic has a free copy of Metro last night light and a mousepad plus a 30 day no dead pixel
powernotebook doesn't have any freebies right now :(

Wow Gentech offers free ground shipping (continental US) and doesn't charge NY sales tax

(and thanks, picked up this alias some years back, though some non-nerds are confused and think it's supposed to be Pittsburgh or something)

Some SSDs come with transfer software, or there are many software options available that come with good documentation and instructions.
I've used acronis true image with success, it's easy to use.

Thermal pads only hit temperatures if they are thicker than they should be, usually caused by folding on themselves, this increases the gap between the core and the heatsink.

Hey guys, just got my GT60 in the mail today. Is it normal for the light above the power button to be orange all the time (web browsing, listening to music)? Does this mean the dGPU is being used instead of the integrated one?

Well this is frustrating. I recently bought a GT60 2OC from gentech which included a free memory upgrade to 16 gb. I've been randomly getting an error message from "wermg.exe" saying that there was an error trying to write to the memory. Seems like my laptop has a bad memory stick?

edit: I did some research on this and it could be my hard drive or windows installation. I'll also run memory test.
I chose to purchase my own hard drive for this laptop so I had to download an OEM copy of Windows 8 and burn it to a disc. Could be a bad burn. I will try burning it again at the lowest speed and reinstalling windows.

Hello all. First time posting after finding this site while researching the gt70 2OC-065US. Loving this site and all of the valuable info the members have provided on this thread. Thank you!

I have a question regarding the free memory upgrade offered by Gentechpc.com - I didn't see where they are offering this... not even when I customized it. How do I get the free upgrade?

Also, Under the RAM section it lists the different configurations and it looks like they add 2 x 4GB modules. I thought I read some of you post that your laptops shipped with 1 module of 8GB? I would much rather have 8GB sticks to minimize upgrade costs later on down the road.

    Thanks in advance.

After playing Crysis for about 15 minutes and check hwmoniter to see my GPU maxes out at around 73 degrees. The CPU cores, however, are all in the mid to upper 90s; obviously something is not right here. Would you guys recommend a repaste first to see if it helps or sending it back in? I updated the EC from MSI's website, if that matters.

    Model: GT60 20C-022US

Edit: Idle temps for the CPU are in the low to mid 50s.

Yep, orange should mean the dGPU is in use. Do you have Steam running? That gets run on the dGPU by default

Are you talking about the touch buttons for 'turbo fan, airplane mode, keyboard dimmer...etc etc'?
If so, do you have Nortons antivirus installed?
I only ask due to my husband scanning his gt70 with norton and it picked up and quarantined a .exe file that's part of the scm(software for touch buttons).
I had to find the file in quarantine and restore it, for the touch buttons to work.
Honestly can't remember the file name sorry ;(

That may or may not be the problem.

I hope you get it sorted.

Hey owners, I'm a newbie here thinking of getting the GT60 2OC for $1400. How hot does the keyboard get while gaming, and how loud does the single fan get? Is it loud while idling? Any inputs on this would be great!

Left side barely gets warm, rest is cool. My fan is audible but not loud by any means, pretty quiet at idle.

4 GB sticks are almost exactly half the price of 8 GB sticks, so what's the difference? Unless you're planning to upgrade beyond 16 GB (4x4GB), but you won't need that unless you're planning on having the laptop for a decade or more?

Would having two 4gb ram sticks under the back cover along with one 8gb ram stick under the keyboard have the same/better/worse performance than two 8gb ram sticks under the keyboard?

Can't do that. The 4GB sticks would need to be in the same channel, so they have to be in either the top or bottom slots of each side. The 8 GB one added to that would not affect performance unless it was slower and you had to clock the others down to match it.

OK because I was thinking of buying two aftermarket 4gb ram stick (same clock as stock 8gb) and putting them in the slot under the back cover. There shouldn't be a major performance issue, right? Would the performance difference be really noticeable?

So long as ram is the same speed there is no noticeable performance impact moving from 2 to 4 sticks.

A pair of 8GB and a pair of 4GB performs no differently to two pairs of 8 either so long as they are paired correctly (two under the main hatch the same size and two under the keyboard the same size).

Thanks for your quick response but I have one more question. How is the ram paired up for dual channel memory? (Do the two slots under the keyboard pair up with each other while the two slots near the back cover pair up with each other... or do they interchange as in one keyboard slot pairs with one back cover slot?)

    Thanks in advance.

Correct. I believe MSI has the two slots under the keyboard as Pair A and the pair next to the GPU as Pair B.

Slots unlike desktop motherboards are paired by location, so channel A1 and B1 are under the main hatch and A2 and B2 are under the keyboard.

Yes, I`m talking about the touch buttons for turbo fan, airplane mode, etc...
Thx for advice, but I don`t have Norton installed. I`m using Windows Defender on windows 8. And I still didn`t find any solution :(
P.S. I tried to look for any files in quarantine in Windows Defender, but it`s empty.

Got my GT70 a couple days ago. Pleasantly surprised with the screen, better than I expected. But I'm eextremely disappointed with the sound after reading so much about it and I'm wondering if something is wrong. I knwo better than to expect any amount of bass but I thought it would have a reasonably rich sounding midrange. Playing music drums sound like a spoon hitting an empty soup can... the sound is very bright and gritty, unpleasant to listen to for videos and unlistenable for music. I'm going to play a bit more but can anyone post their settings? I'm runnoing sull range with bass at 100% in Creative software, changed realtek settings to stereo speakers from built in so I could access the crossover, which was a noticeable improvement when set at 180-220. I'm going to try sitting the laptop on a pillow to see if the "sub" is working when I get home.

Also, I can't turn bluetooth on, is there something I need to do with that? The only change I made was to get a 7260 wireless card.

BTW I'm new to widows 8 and am really hating it to the point that I'm getting frustrated with thi slaptop because I'm struggling to check/adjust settings i want to, including the sound

edit: also, I tried to play a dvd movie (store copy) and the drive seemed to stutter/start/stop and the movie wouldn;t play. I went into the file structutre and tried to play individual files and that didn;t work. is there somethign I need to install for dvd mpvies to play?

Lastly, can the touch buttons around the power switch be lit up so you can see them before touching them?

    thanks
