    The ODD bay is SATA3.

I would probably punch a hole through my screen if I had to play BF3 or Crysis 3 on touchscreen.....( RAGE PUNNCCHHH!! EAT THAT FGGTT!! ) y'know......, that kinda .....

    @MichaelStone

The more reviews, the better. It's good to know a users thoughts on his laptop. Me, I'm just here doing a bunch of game benchmarks. Will update my post on the first page in a few days. Funny thing is, some ingame fps is way different than what notebookcheck says.... whats up with that......

Here's one bench : Witcher 2: Assassins of the Kings
    FPS low: 19
    FPS avrg: 35-40
    FPS high: 59
Settings : Ultra preset, Ubersampling off.
    Max temp on GPU after 2hrs 35mins : 76
    Max temp on CPU after 2hrs 35mins : 77
Note that the GPU temp 90% of the time stayed below 70c mark. Sometimes stayed as low as 61c.

I think the setup notebookcheck used is somewhat different than the MSI system. If I recall correctly they used a 4800HQ. And also windows 7, with different drivers.

Maybe we could team up in the review, and add your benshmarks? We'd create a 2OC review ;-)

Ordered my GT60 2OC from GenTech PC on July 18th and it finally shipped last night! Should be getting it by July 31st at the latest.

Excited to finally get my hands on it! Bought a bunch of stuff during the Steam Summer Sale that I'm waiting to play until I get that laptop. Current laptop has an nVidia GT540m card in it and can't play some of the newer titles so well. :(

The EC firmware changes the temperature mapping. The first spinup has moved from ~50 to ~60 degrees celcius. Also, it spins to maximum RPM (Cooler Boost style) at the uefi initialization. (So every cold boot, but not restarts form windows).

That spinup is extremely irritating, I think (both my boss and my mom noticed it immediately). Though it's somewhat quieter when doing youtube stuff.

    Your choice

I was thinking maybe it could be because of the vsync? I had sync every frame ticked when I ran the game.

The light is orange so the gtx is working but I think it's the vsync th is causing this drop.

hey Guys , i just wanted to order MSI gt70 2oc 065us with the price about 1320$ and i need this for some serious gaming and desktop replacement but i find Sager 8250 with AMD 8970 , And this will cost about 1440$ , But i'm afraid about the build quality of the Sager .
There is a thing , the Sager looks pretty powerful than the MSI for a reasonable price but there is a few sites that sell the Sager and low reviews about the Sager
    I'm confused
    please Help :)

Hey guys. I got the GT60-2OD model. Regarding the static noise through the headphones, it happens with low impendance ones. I got both a pair of SoundMagic E10 and Audio Technica ATH-M50. The first ones are 16 Ohm and some static noise comes through. Only if I place my hand on the aluminum palmrest it goes away (I ground the notebook). With the later ones (38 Ohm high sensitivity) it does not happen. It's a design issue with the internal AMP. It's not up to the task :p
Only way to remove that noise is by making sure the wall power plug is well grounded.

As for the firmware downgrade, I fear it's not possible. Once checksums are verified it won't let you overwrite the new one. That initial fan spin-up is caused by the EC checking if the fan is present and fully working. I know it's irritating but also neccesary..

    :)

    That might be the reason...

Teaming up for the review, huh? I'd like that! I've not seen a 20C review... lots of 20D though... I'm positive that a 20C review will help potential buyers to make the decision easier.

I thought V-Sync works at 30 fps, or the refresh rate of the display (60 fps).
If you would please, check the setting and let me know. I'm quite curious.

I figured that was the purpouse. Does it have to go to the maximum rpm, though?
Mine sounds like a jet plane taking off, no jokes here. And the original EC didn't have it.

Nope it doesn't have to go at max. The problem lies in the max voltage that gets applied (12v) and causes it to go full speed. I too can't understand why MSI engineers went this way..just 5v would suffice (fan spin-up voltage).

I'd go with something from crucial, samsung or intel if possible. I found an older samsung 840 for ~ $179 the other day on newegg, though I eventually went with the pre-installed 240gb crucial from gentech, instead.

Here's a good place to pose this ssd question btw, they have been very helpful to me in the past: Memory and Storage - AnandTech Forums

FWIW, I've built around 25 desktops for myself and others over the past 15 years. I went through the hassle of installing an ssd/buying the carriage/reinstalling drivers/etc etc on my dv7tqe 18 months ago, and I'm more than happy to pay an extra $100 or less to be able to customize my laptop, get ic diamond installed for free, add bluetooth/blu-ray/better wireless/etc etc. I don't know that Gentechpc is any good as I have not used them in the past, but if they aren't then they have run a fantastic campaign of subterfuge and misdirection for the past 11 years and somehow convinced the entire tech community into believing that they are competent to customize a laptop.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-770M.88995.0.html

Going from the above, it looks like 8970 is about the same performance as gtx 680m, so maybe 15-20% faster than gtx 770m, but it uses a max of 90w instead of the 75w max for 770m. I don't mind the higher power/heat from a desktop AMD gpu (I have a 7970 in my desktop), but I think that for a mobile gpu of the current generation the nvidia is typically the better choice.

edit: I've seen conflicting information on this...but it seems that the preponderance of the evidence says that the 8970 runs louder/hotter/uses more power by a hefty margin at least. So the important question for you is: do you NEED that extra performance of the 8970? If so then the 770m can't even be considered, but if you DON'T need it then the 770m is the obvious choice.

    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-AMD-Radeon-HD-8970M.97807.0.html

re-edit: here is an alternative conclusion which was just posted today. It shows more like a 20-25% improvement for 8970m over 770m, and is quite favorable to the new AMD card. Looks like total wattage used is only about 16w more on the 8970, which is itself 15w lower than gtx 780m...so it fits right in the middle of the nvidia cards in power consumption, and it is much closer to 780m than to 770m in performance. I'd say that if you can find a good chassis that you like (maybe a futre msi/asus implementation?) then the 8970m would be a great alternative to either nvidia gpu.

8970 should be faster than a 770M on average, also it's 100W not 250W lol.

I just read a review on the Samsung 840 EVO drives. They cost the same as the 'old' Samsung 840 series, and still use TLC chips, but are supposed to be as fast as the 840 Pro series. I'd be looking at those if I had to buy now.

Did you make a choice yet?

Hello, I recently purchased a GT60-2OC and I'm loving it so far except for one problem. The optical spdif port isn't working for me. Whenever I plug in an optical cable, it thinks it's a headphone plug and won't let me switch to the Realtek Digital Output which says "not plugged in" under the windows sound menu.
I'd really like to get this connected to my home theater system. Thanks!

    Thanks. I have one of those 3.5mm to toslink converters I just plugged in. It didn't register in the port I was expecting;

Would you please try the very fist port, the one furthest from the display.

If nothing hapens please try this.

Click the folder icon in the top left field where the connectors are listed, you can force a popup that lets you select the function of the port when you insert the plug.
Insert the plug, and select S/PDIF.

On my laptop the standard setting was Headphones.

You can uncheck the popup setting after you've selected S/PDIF if you like, the setting should stay.

Got my GT70 this morning :D

Still getting used to the keyboard, seem to often be one key to the left of what I want...
The matte screen is great, I much prefer it than my Dell's glossy screen.

    Haven't tried gaming yet though...

Unfortunately there's not really an elegant way of doing it. The best way to get the panel above the keyboard out without breaking the tabs is to take off the fan and push out the three tabs that are underneath it, this will create a gap by the ESC and F1 key. Open the notebook all the way out until the screen and the base is parallel, and lift on the gap on the lower left side of that panel firmly.

Hello all. I was hoping to get some help. I just received my laptop with the stock 5400rpm drive. My goal is to replace the stock drive with a 256mb SSD and a 750mb 7200rpm drive. While I'm waiting for the SSD in the mail, I decided to pop in the 7200 drive and it is not being recognized. I even tried to recognize the drive through the USB 3.0 port. It spins but isn't recognized by the OS.

I did notice the stock drive appears to be located in the secondary slot (near DVD). I placed the 7200rpm drive in the slot near the battery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not an IT guy, and this is my first attempt at replacing drives. I'm not sure if I'm missing a driver, it is a BIOS setting, or something else. in fact, I don't even know how to access BIOS settings. I was wrong to assume I could just plug in the drive and I would be good to go, LOL. Thanks in advance for any help or information you can provide.

Update: I was able to get the drive recognized through the USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports after initializing the drive in Disk Management. However, when installed in the internal bay, the OS doesn't recognize the drive. On a related note, the drive is a SATA 3. Any chance the bay only supports SATA 2?

P.S. Also, what motherboard does the laptop use? This would help alot with troubleshooting issues. Thanks again.

Did you try to initialize the drive under Disk Management again when it was connected in the internal SATA port? All the SATA interfaces on the GT60 are SATA III.

I had a question that I haven't been able to find an answer for here or elsewhere on the web. I recently purchased a MSI GT60 2OD-026US and also a Dell U2713HM to use as an external display. Despite using an HDMI cable to connect the two, I've only been able to get the Dell monitor to run at a 1920 × 1080 resolution instead of the maximum of 2,560x1,440. HDMI should have no problem running 2,560x1,440 from my understanding. Would using the mini display port as the connector fix this? Thanks!

Interesting. Try to move the 5400 RPM drive to that port and see if the computer will boot from it, at least we can confirm the port is not defective.

Switched the drives and abracadabra, it worked! LOL. Not sure why, but thanks for the idea and solution! Hopefully, the cloning of the 5400 to the SSD and the subsequent replacement of the 5400 goes smoother =) Should have the SSD (Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB) by tomorrow.

Thank you guys, I going to (careful) try again. It´s my only remaining update (SSD & Blu-ray Drive updates were extremely easy).

Hey guys, what's the best driver version for the 770m right now? I still have 311.48, but i see there are a couple new ones for the card on nvidia's site. Anyone tried how well they perform with this laptop?

Using windows 8, the only 770m drivers that would work was the stock MSI and the Beta 326.19.

Windows 8.1 preview only supports 326.41

326.41 has been stable on my machine, and I haven't seen any preformance issues yet.

Does anyone know what to expect from Skyrim Legendary edition, with thw HighRes texture DLC, in terms of FPS?

Well almost a sleepless night, but I'm happy to report that I have successfully cloned my HDD to a SSD. After hours of trying to use a USB to SATA 3 cable and various "cloning" products, I decided to actually load the SSD internally and use the software that came with the Samsung SSD. Took minutes once I settled on this approach. The only side issue that surfaced was my laptop wasn't shutting down properly (monitor would stay on). So I took a shot in the dark and reloaded all the drivers from the MSI CD. The shutdown problem was resolved and the PC speed and boot time is drastically improved, thanks to the SSD. Very happy with the laptop and the results of my venture into hardware installation, but next time I think I'll have the experts do it, LOL. Many thanks as this forum was instrumental in providing information and helped me work thru some issues.
