My ram is occupying both of the under keyboard slots, leaving the two under the access panel free. I had ram added by Gentech, so they would have installed it that way. CPU-Z tells me that my ram is running in dual channel mode with slots 2 and 4 occupied. So I agree with you and it also makes sense that you would group the memory in the slots that are next to each other (for a laptop).

Thanks, but no luck. There is nothing under the "utilities" section when running the auto play feature. In fact, using the auto play feature only has the manuals, an option under security to install Norton and a link to the MSI website. Nothing under drivers or utilities using the auto play feature.

Do I need to contact Power Notebooks directly for this?

I don't have the CD with me but it's on the MSI page:
    MSI Global GT60 2OC

"Sound blaster cinema AP" , This version was added to the webpage in July and may be newer than the CD version.

I have not installed the EQ software (equalizer configuration file) which is optional.

Yes they are typically more user grouped rather than logically so.

So both under the main cover or both under the keyboard need to be occupied for dual channel. Or all of them ofc.

Just asking, I've always thought that, mixing different brands of RAM in one desktop or laptop will be problematic because the timings are different. Wouldn't mixing the default RAM with aftermarket upgrade RAM cause issues?

Thanks for the comment about Gentechpc.com. I was about to just buy the base model gt70-2OC at newegg, but putting in the ssd is kind of a pita...then reinstalling windows without the bloatware...and that intel wireless + bluetooth and a blue-ray player both seemed like a good idea...anyway, I spent about $100 more than I would have to just get the ssd and install it on my own + I would have missed all that other nice stuff, I'm very glad that I custom-built it.

edit: Read lots of positive comments on gentechpc.com, and a few negative comments about others. It got me curious, so I went to check out gentech on reseller ratings... they are 10/10 on 165 reviews over a 10 year period! Definitely gives me confidence that I made the right choice in going with them.

A few years ago we had an ic diamond rep offer a bunch of free thermal paste to members on the DC forum at Anandtech. I was quite impressed with both my own results from using it and with what others had to say about their experiences. Also, gentechpc has such a solid reputation that I don't mind having them digging through my laptop before sending it to me.

A better way to say that is "SOME games don't go along well with sli/crossfire". MOST games do extremely well when you add a 2nd gpu to them.

Sorry, my bad. I guess that would be a better way to put it. Last time I played around with SLI, the difference in FPS versus single GPU in games was not so great, that I feel like the money spent on the second GPU could have been put to another hardware and that I would be content to play my games a bit lowered in settings. But then again, not everyone would be happy knowing that there is a setting that he has not maxed in the settings. Enthusiast crave top level eye candy and fps, but for me, I'll just hang on to what I have, hence the GTX 770M was better for me than GTX 780M. Not saying it performs better.

Very rare these days. If you match the ram with the same speed and major timings you are unlikely to hit issues.

Interesting thing to note - I was having issues with my headphones picking up squealing noises while the GPU was under load. I had a look at the icons by the ports, and I'd plugged my headphones into the wrong port. Switched ports, and no longer have any noise issues.

My laptop has 3 differing brands of RAM sticks in it, and I've had no issues.

Thanks Meaker, good to know. I was thinking of adding more RAM, have saved just about enough money to do so. However, I have a single RAM stick in my notebook right now, thats how it came. It's in slot #2. I was looking to buy a set of 2x8GB RAM, but I'm still wondering if its worth getting more than 8 gigs......... What would you guys recommend upgrading as of now? I have a single SSD 120GB inside atm. I've also bought another 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD that will go into the ODD. I'm set on accessories too, bought all new mouse and headphones, also a xbox controller for just this laptop. Seems that the RAM upgrade is the only thing left to do.

Here's my thought on ram based on my previous laptop. Eight gigs should be fine for any gaming you do now. However, if you plan to keep this laptop for 3+ years, you may want more later. With my last laptop, DDR2 was cheap when I purchased it in 2009, but was far more expensive (because it was outdated) when I was looking to upgrade last year. That led me to go for more ram from the beginning, even though I will probably never really utilize 16 gigs during the first couple years of ownership. If I were in your shoes, with a 1x8 stick, I would just buy one more stick of the exact same memory and call it good. If that stick is located in the slots under the keyboard, you'll want to put the second stick right next to it.

Additionally, more ram should allow you to turn off your page file, which can save some writes on your SSDs.

As far as I am aware, Msi doesn't release any of their gaming notebooks with their graphics cards in SLI. However, do you think they would do that in future? Would this setup be able to run, theoretically, dual 770m's? And also, would you guys purchase the ultra bay if it became available at some point?

Thanks for the input. I agree with you, and I think I'm gonna do as you said. Besides, I got nothing else to upgrade, right?

    @Mr.Heartless

The ultra bay sounds like a cool idea, I believe Lenovo has it in Ideapad Y510 i think. But, SLI in 15.6..... I'm worried about heat issues mostly..... but dual 770M would be sweet! But it all comes down to price/performance ratio for me. If adding another 770M cost like $400.... I'd take single card setup right away. But it depends on the person whos buying....

I think, MSi should start offering a new laptop which has SLI. That would bring in some enthusiast to the MSi way. The more choices offered, the better.

I would definitely think about upgrading it in future. I was originally looking at the Y510P but the build quality on lenovo turned me away. It's currently not within by budget to get the 780m version but I would love to be able to upgrade to dual 770's in the future. The heat in the lenovo laptops is not that bad, not sure if they have a single fan setup or not but with MSI I'm pretty sure they could still keep it down to below 85 degree Celsius. As to price, I doubt it would cost 400$ for the upgrade, maybe about 300-350$ at most as the dual SLI Clevo configuration at GentechPc adds that amount.

Just to add to the comments about this, you will often benefit from extra ram b/c Windows automagically allocates excess RAM to a ramdisk (or if you're enterprising you could build your own). 24 gb would be enough for most programs that you run, offering you an immense i/o speedup even over an ssd.

Well, in a laptop I think that the benefit of a single "fast" gpu vs sli/xfire "faster" gpus is far greater than in a desktop b/c of the enormous increase in heat and complexity + greater odds of gpu failure. And if you do OC then you're likely to get the single gpu even closer to the dual setup.

I definitely noticed that! My machine is super fast in loading and unloading programs. Haven't had a chance to install and play a game, but will do so tonight!.

When I added my 2x8 gb, I couldn't get the top bank in properly because the new thermal bridge was in the way. I had to undo the GPU heatsink and the thermal bridge at the CPU... :( Not that easy to upgrade afterall...

Has anyone noticed a rattling sound from the fan?? Mine sounds like the bearing is shot...

Have you tried seeing if by holding the fan casing it stops the vibration?

The new thermal bridge does make the ram a bit trickier to work with but is not too bad, just an excuse to redo the thermal paste and pads with some nice new ones.

Hi guys, I've got a couple of question regarding differences between the GT60 and GT70 models. Sorry if they've already been answered (they probably have; and I'm just bad at looking...):

What, if any, is the difference in battery life between the two models? Also, is there a difference in cooling efficiency, owing to difference sizes, between the two?

Thanks for reading (and hopefully answering)!

The MSI gets the slight edge on build quality, gaps and plastic quality are about the same but the MSI does have more of a solid feel when being handled whereas the Y510 feels somewhat hollow.

The GT 750M SLi in the Y510 will perform nearly the same as the GTX 770M in framerates, but you do not have to deal with micro-stuttering and performance inconsistencies that with the GTX 770M. Cooling in the Y510 is more quiet than the GT60 but it does also run hotter (CPU temperatures are near 90C, GPUs in the 75C-85C range).

What do you mean by holding the fan casing? Do you mean by taking the fan out while the machine is on? Isn't that potentially harmful for the GPU and CPU?

Has anyone got the current drivers to work? Mine shipped with 311 and current is 326 but when I try to load them it just keeps checking system compatability and never moves on. Also, how do you guys get the case open without tearing the warranty sticker.

Unfortunately I don't have a baseline for performance. 326.19 beta is the only driver that will install with the 770m and windows 8.1.

FWIW, I can play NFS Most Wanted maxed out at 30+ fps at 1080p. I'll check out Skyrim tonight, as that seems to be a common interest here

Hey guys have a question about the Killer Wireless cards.

I wanted to upgrade to the N-1103 but was torn between the 2 antenna(300mpbs) version and the 3 antenna(450mpbs) version. The latter is about 40$ more than the former but I'd like to know if there is any benefit to paying extra outside of the extra speed. With the internet I get here I'd never get past 300mbps so wouldn't it be better to take the 2 antenna option? Or is there more to the upgrade than a higher cap on speed?

I'm happy with the base option : Killer Wireless-N 1202, which takes full advantage of my network components using my Asus router and "turbo" internet speed. Unless you're sending and receiving a lot across your network you may be happy with the 2 antenna option.

Depends on how much you're getting it for. If you're looking at the $175-$200 price range, I would recommend the Corsair Neutron or the Kingston HyperX 3K. The V+ 200's 43000 Write IOPS is pretty poor in comparison to what other manufacturers offer in that price bracket.

Hi Guys, sorry new to all this gaming buz. Just got my msi gt60 2oc (8gb ram, gtx 770m, i7 4th gen, windows 8) and tried to play modern warfare 3. I had fraps on and saw that my fps were around 40-45 on everything ultra. Is this normal? Because it says that mw3 should be getting around 90 with the 770m.

45 - 50 fps loss between your scores and the benchmark seems like allot to me

Are you maybe using the intel HD graphics? What color is the led above the on/off button while playing?

I didn't test on Windows 8 either. I 'upgraded' to Windows 8.1 after installing my drivers and software.
The short time I did spent in Windows 8 wasn't that comfortable. It works surprisingly well with a touchpad, however, the optimizations in 8.1 for 'desktop' users are really useful. The new all apps menu almost makes it feel like the Ubuntu Unity interface, if I might says so.

I'm thinking about writing a review, but I don't know how useful that is because Ryzeki already made a good review already. Should I?

christ! there are so many shills here I am surely buying mine directly from MSI lol

"oh I did the IC treatment and my temps are -7c cooler"

"I got mine from such and such" ...and it makes cricket noises

sorry to be so negative but reading thru this thyread is like an emotional roller coaster... buy the MSI GT60 no no build a desktop LGA2011 nagh buy the MSI... wait wait build a LGA2011 :D

I surely don't want any laptop screwing around with my $2000 piece of equipment when I can simply pop the back cover and keyboard out myself. Dealing with a 3rd party or middle man just seems unwise as you always get the latest refresh and chipsets and bios directly from the manufacturer. Not to mention... I'll do the 72hr burn in my darn self!

it's more than likely a Realtek chip with Creative software over top of it... like alot of desktop/tower boards these days. you will see the "Creative Labs" chip advertised if it actually has a native creative chip on board.

I have not read this on any laptop, even the $4000 ones... another thing I have not read about or seems to be left out is if the ODD bays are sata3 when you use a hard drive in them? I'd really like to know that and also if the ODD bay is sata3 is it native?

lol trust me no one here buying these particular laptops are not interested in a touch screen... it's so funny when you hear stuff PC World magazine saying in their reviews repeated back on a forum. The only reason PC World and the likes let other units beat the MSI out in particular is because MSI didn't pay PC World or the likes for brown-nosing points.

...it's a dirty game but there are other ways PC World and the likes make money and not from just selling their online and news stand magazines.

you need a touch screen for BF3 or Crysis3 you can always get a USB powered stand alone touchscreen... they are cheap as hell.

these are advertised and marketed as "Gaming Laptops"
