no, you cant use these cards in miniPCIE and there are no ways of using it or adopting these to work the way you would like in these laptops
in other hand you can try this but its only highly experimental and I disbelieve it will work for you most likely due to driver issues and so on

8970m is exactly the same as 7970m just had firmware update and rebranded, also slightly higher clocks, but nothing that 7970m cant achieve FYI you can always flash 7970m to 8970m and benefit of higher factory clocks, but not always can flash 8970m down to 7970m
if the 8970m you bought comes from enduro-disabled system it will work just the same as 7970m would work. -
I know they are almost identical cards, only thing that worried me was the enduro crap, so if i can't get it to even POST in my friends MSI i will probably end up on putting it to my Alienware and flash it there with a proper Vbios.
The worst thing would be when this card would not yet been released with Enduro-Disabled vbios. I think i have to ask Eurocom about that. It is nice to have all answers before doing the upgrade so it is easy/quick to troubleshoot the problems if they arise.
Peace ! -
well here is a thing you got to keep in mind, as all 7970m's can be sucsessfully cross-flashed to 8970m vbios, only very few 8970m's (or if any at all I dont know) can be cross-flashed down to 7970m vbios. I do think its safer to say the 8970m cant be flashed down to 7970m to be safe. Well if clevo's sell there machines with 8970m I think there could be an option of VBIOS with enduro disabled for dedicated graphics switching, but I am not sure of these options as we speak (im not in to this thing too much), I bet svl7 could chime in here and shed some light on this matter for us
anyway, you could do some search and see if there are any postings on net about enduro disabled 8970m etc if there is, you dont need to remove card from MSI laptop to flash vbios, you can do blind flash(imagine everything works but not the screen output, so all you do is just practice the sequences of blind-flash via dos for vbios while original working GPU is still in the MSI laptop, and then after swap of GPU's if it doesnt post video, you know the sequences and command names etc and all you do is just flash the VBIOS if there is such available -
Hi guys,
first time here, I'm doing a rather simple upgrade to my GT663 (I know this is the Gx660, but I think they have the same motherboard): I would like to install an SSD (preferably a samsung 840 pro 256 GB).
But, I've heard of compatibility issues with the motherboard, AHCI setting and many SSD brands.
Could you please advise me which model/brand I should buy to be on the safe side?
I was already downloading all the latest drivers and my programs to reinstall everything, when I read of the "compatibility issues"
Thank you in advance for any advice!!! -
Well, there goes 2 years and 8 months with my brave and beloved GX660R-060 US. Not a single issue, not even a timid BSOD, nothing!
At least 9 hours a day of hard work. Just one thermal paste change last month. Low, extremely low temps (and living in a city called Recife, which I prefer calling Hellcife). Fan on turbo almost all the time (gaming and gaming) and working like a charm. Best purchase I've made so far in my solid 50 years of living, and by a mile. Thank you, MSI, and thank you guys around here. My deepest respect goes to Ryzeki and Forge.
Have a good one you all. -
...so we installed 7970m as 8970m was faulty.
... bough from Eurocom and installed in My friends GX660R
Works Plug&Play !
Temps around 75-80'C while gaming, and 35'C idle.
Very impressed with This Msi Laptop -
The problem is that the links that were present are broken.
Could someone please be so kind to help a fellow msi gamer enthusiast to upgrade this machine with a working link to this BIOS?
Thanks!! -
yea I will post my version of unlocked bios later if someone else doesnt do before me, be patient and watch the space
-
Thanks
If you could also give me any advice on how to follow through, it will be very helpfull.
I've already updated my BIOS twice I think, with the official ones, so I'm not new at this stuff, but when I've done it, I always held my breath through the whole operation!!!
Like cross my fingers and knock on wood!!
I'll keep my eyes on the thread then. -
well well, I dont know how well you've searched, my links are still alive, so most likely searched not good enough. also brief descriptions of how to are there too, search and find those
here's the link to gx660r latest unlocked bios: V3_BIOS_GX660R.zip - FileFactory -
Can someone please enlighten me. I'm planning to get a 24" 1080p monitor for my GX660 as a main monitor (laptop screen off) because i'm tired of watching movies and playing games on its 15.6" tiny screen. Will my system become slow because of the 1080p resolution? I know if I play games on it, the fps will drop but will it affect the overall responsiveness and lifespan of my laptop?
GX660 specs:
i5 480m (2.66ghz-2.93ghz)
8Gb RAM
1GB ATI 5870 GDDR5 -
you don't have 1080p on laptop screen ?
then you can loose 30-50% fps depending on games
rest isn't matter -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes there was a 1366x768 version. It will struggle with the latest titles. You could upgrade it though.
-
-
lower res = more FPS, not less FPS folks so lower res = GAINING FPS in all games not loosing the FPS
same as dropping the res for some titles to gain performance/FPS -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
-
my bad, didnt read well enough.
on other hand if he keeps the lower res on bigger screen he wont feel drop in performance -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yeah but it will look even worse
-
Now I'm waiting for the SSD to arrive and, crossing fingers, I hope it will all work
Thanks a lot, and I'll let you know.
I've also ordered a set of 2x4 GB kingston so-dimm 1333 mhz, to boost the ram.
Any advices? -
Hi everyone, I am new here but has been lurking in these forums looking to upgrade my gx660 with 7970M. As I looked in the web, I found an MSI 7970M card but found no info if it'll work with my gx660. The description says that it needs to be flashed in order to work for older models. I've read here few hundred pages back for the specific vbios for it to work. I want to ask if there's a difference between Clevo, dell and MSI 7970M cards that should be noted or they're all basically same cards that I just need to have the correct vbios flashed for it to work? Thanks! -
Card version 1.2G
Ask for Vbios with enduro disabled just to make sure it is plug&play, vbios numbers 015.017.000.001.042717
Then you flash the card with ondervolted Vbios like i did, 0.975V and your temps will lover by 5-8'C at full load,
So lets say on stock vbios in diablo 3 my friend was at 81'C, and now he is at 75'C, which is awsome because the fan is not kicking in to MAX.
Get the card WITHOUT x-bracket, you will not need it and the overall cost will be lower as well.
7970m is now best top-end card value/money.
It is good to get a new card because you will get warranty, and you are sure that the card was not messed with, ....some people have crazy ideas
If you want i can provide you contact info with the person from Eurocom who can get you 7970m within a week time
GOOD LUCK ! -
I think my friend is selling one of those. Thanks for that!

Hi, I just made a CPU upgrade from i5-480M to i7-920XM. I noticed that my ram is still running at 1066MHz but it is capable to running on 1333MHz. I know i5 Nahelem cpus only runs at 1066MHz that's why I didn't bother before. How can I make it run at 1333MHz?
-
Hi. You have to set it in BIOS seankenny. Btw, anyone tried to put in a new keyboard? I'm asking because my one's kinda loud and it's "bearing down" in the area of WSAD, which is annoying.
-
installing replacement keyboard is easy, undo two marked screws at the bottom, loosen top speaker/touch buttons panel & remove it gently and carefully, undo top keyboard screws if any present and there she goes off the frame, then just unclip flexx connector and reinstall replacement one in reverse order
By the way I have few of these keyboards in stock for sale cheapo! and are authentic genuine MSI gaming keyboards for these laptops (Its german layout though... QWERTZ...) -
Thanks for the info man. Yea, I saw your offer here. German layout is not the one I would like, don't know a word in that language But if I won't find any other, I will PM you
-
I actually checked the BIOS twice earlier before asking here. But after reading your post that its in the bios, I checked again and found it. @_@ Anyway, thanks!
-
-
no difference
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes, no reason to risk a flash.
-
What should be the idle for 920XM with and without turbo fan? I am getting 62C-66C without turbo fan and 54C-58C with turbo fan.
-
-
i will ask my friend if hdmi is working.
besides that, why they recommend dell cards (only HDMI??) ?
Also, i have HDMI in my laptop which i used 3 times during 4 years. -

drill a hole - make a vent grill mesh for the fan to suck extra air in, I assume you've already tried best thermal compounds on the market? ICD7/ICD24 works pretty well!
Also if you run some antivirus that continuously scanning your system background while utilization of the machine by the user is low or if the machine is in idle state, your temps will always be higher due to this fact. -
During idle, I set my multiplier at 9 (lowest multiplier I can set in throttlestop) to keep it from fluctuating. but I guess, background activity may still cause of the higher temps. -
the bigger - the better. I would say the hole diameter at least the size of the intake hole size of the fan, but I would do it even larger, maybe ~size of the fan itself, and cover it with black speaker mesh to keep things away from falling inside the fan
-
hello, I've been playing with the multiplier on my 920XM since I got the 240W PSU because my 120W stock simply couldn't handle this beast. Anyway, my laptop shuts down after I set the multiplier on 4 cores to 25. I tried to lower it to 24 and it shuts down again seconds after running prime95. This happened to me before but I thought it was PSU issue that's why I waited for it before raising multipliers. Do you know what's the problem? I've read here that people using those without problem. Heat isn't the issue because it is safeguarded by throttlestop. and its just, i think 2 secs after running prime95.

Hi guys, I bought 256 GB Vertex 4 about 9-10 months ago and flashed modded bios to make the SSD drive run. Now I'm in trouble with my pc, it is sometimes freezing or giving BSOD. I did some tests like prime95, memtest etc. but no problems occurred. Lastly, i tried to install Win 7 on my hdd, which is on second sata slot. It didn't work either. Now I want to try original MSI BIOS but i have no backup of the modded BIOS that i am currently using. Is there anybody to upload modded BIOS? Links on previous pages are broken .
-
@ ^^^
I will just pretend I did not see what you wrote. Now go do your homework AGAIN (FOR REAL THIS TIME I MEAN) clicking back several pages from today backwards.
... Lazy user -
Hahaha So sorry, I looked older pages like 200s. Your reaction made me laugh btw . Now, I'm lookin for XMP and ram frequency tweaks of yours and I'm sure I'll find .
Finally, do you have any idea about my problem? (sometimes freezing sometimes blue screen of death). May it be related to BIOS or is it a hardware thing? -
get us the error codes
-
Here is the BSOD:
I don't know if you are talkin about 0x000001 something. Besides, shouldn't I flash BIOS via "unetbootin" tool just like they explained in this guide. I am pressing F11 and selecting Udisk on boot screen, but nothing happens, just a black screen and blinking prompt line :S . By the way, I appreciate your help in advance.
