I have a very similar cfg including AUO screen + Dell 7970M... :)
Maybe I'm wrong but.... since i7 cpus support max 1333Mhz, what's the point in using 1600/1800+ mems?

youre not wrong, he just overpaid for ram expecting it to rn at higher frequencies which doesnt happen its still being clocked down to 1333 automatically. The only benefit he has is lower CL timing thats all.

You could maybe use thiaphoon burner or an unlocked bios to get slightly improved latencies, but that's about it.

to use some SSD drives you need modified unlocked version of bios, but you will still need to alter certain settings manually to make them SSDs work properly if they were those sophisticated models :) for all other mods bios modifications are not necesarry

    Hi guys.
I was thinking about buying GX60 but then I saw that AMD processor and absence of Dynaudio sound (and that awful start button!).

I realized that maybe upgrading CPU and GPU of my old GX660 would be a better choice, am I right? Im afraid it will cause cooling problems. If you know of such problems, please let me know.
I am not experienced in upgrading laptops, so I would like to do as little changes as needed to fit AMD 7970M and solid CPU (940XM or 920XM, add some cooling-wise alternatives if you can) in my GX660 non-RAID.

Can you point me to step by step guides to these upgrades and websites where to get these components?
Do I have to flash BIOS? I flashed it once for SSD support, will the new flash cancel the SSD support?
Also, are there any differences to upgrading GX660R vs GX660 non-RAID?

You can take the GPU heatsink from the GX60 and use it in the GX660.

The difference between the raid model and the non raid model is a bios setting enabling or disabling the feature.

The GX60 does have the same speaker system as the GT60 by the way.

They don't have dynaudio branding because they decided not to pay the royalties to put the sticker on that machine but it's the same speakers.

and the codec also the same ?

never think that can use the same speakers for less price because don't have that titles :)

Yes the codec is the same too. It's the name that dynaudio are charging for now, they have already charged for the design (that was probably a single charge).

The raid version should work just fine since it's one bios setting different. If you were getting crashes during windows boot that was because you needed to set it to AHCI mode most likely.

Thanks bro, ill try to do it now... might take some time before i can dl it in techinferno due to its site policy

Update: oh yeah, silly me , it was set to raid as a default thats why it crashes during boot, why on earth i missed to check that out  thanks

planning to mod my lappy soon, better start with the cooling system first before updating the hdd>gpu>processor, its been 2 years already since i bought this and still on stock parts

    Hi,
I want to get some more RAM for my GX660. There are 3 slots on motherboard, right? Each slot can take 4GB RAM. Afaik the processors doesnt support more than 8GB so I should get only 2x4GB modules?
Should I get 1066 or 1333Mhz? Somewhere is written that GX660 can use 1066 somewhere its 1333Mhz.
Also there are 1.5V and 1.35V modules, which to choose?

    Thanks in advance

Yea, only 8GB RAM for i5 processor, so go for 2x4GB with 1.5V and max 1333Mhz.

you can buy 1.3V kingston 1333MHz CL9 RAM, cheap and good stuff, also, I would encourage you to upgrade your i5 to i7 XM edition so you would benefit most of your laptop and all the hardware ;)

I was thinking about a pair of these: http://www.patriotmemory.com/product/specs/PSD34G1333L2S-sku.pdf
I can get two of them cheaper than any 2x4GB kit here + 10 year warranty, so what do you think? I guess they can run in dual channel without problem.

Im planning to get i7 XM and 7970M too, I just take it step by step :)

if you are planning to do i7 and 7970m , go 12GB right away, so all DIMs are same brand same specs and speeds. Yea that memory seems OK, so you can just buy 3 DIM's instead and save yourself on postage.

Hey, to be honest I havent installed yet due to no time at all lately, its laying in the safe now. all I am thinking now is heatsink copper-mass capacity mod, I hope I will find time some time next week. I dont like take things apart time and time again so Im gonna do it once or twice max with heatsink copper mod. I will give the real life comparison to my OEM 2860QM vs OEM 2960XM and temperatures difference etc and power draw differences, also benchmarks, hence need to prepare nice comparison samples list. I know its not going to OC anywhere far like it would in Alienware laptop but I dont care too much, as I like solid stable usable stock power and whatever tiny tinkering can give me.

I dont know if I have missed that or what, did savier1 described his own experience with his new AUO 95% gammut panel yet or what? I know you have got 1 dead pixel, what did you do about that? is it in bad to see area?

that's 5x5 square from UDPixel - so far nothing happens with mine 1 red pixel [its' really visible in dark scene/place]- then I can live with that

Last time I'm getting some hangups in game - theory is that the 6990m don't like OC like before or maybe some other things cause hang games

somehow eyes went trough text quicker than the brain got it, sorry for misread - my bad. :p

I would hate that area dead pixel...really any area when I think further... and one last thing for me left now is this 95% AUO panel to buy... but no dead pixels. I wonder whats savier's experience with his seller...?

    low quality [IMG]

    1x1 not 5x5 - 5x5 square is from software :)
rather easy to move 5x5 than 1x1 over that dead pixel :p

that's for sure 95% or much more better than v5 :p
and recognized by power strip [reading info direcly from lcd ] as LEN40B2 ( Recenzja Lenovo ThinkPad W510 - Notebookcheck.pl)

Screen-shop have 0-dead pixel guarantee but only on german land.

Been using 12gb of 1333 in my gx660 with a 940xm for ages now and it happily uses all of it. I know this because I use it for extensive video and 3d apps, and in task manager you can see the memory usage. Adobe after affects happily chews pretty much all 12 to itself :)

I still love this notebook! great results, since my gx660 scores 2504 points using i7 840qm and 5870m 800/1000.....next week i'll mount the new 7970m hoping quite similar results!
I guess is a hard question: someone knows if would be possible to change the entire motherboard with a different one from the newest msi gaming laptop, in order to upgrade with ivy bridge? I think that even updating again my i7 840qm with 920/940xm i'd have a potential bottleneck for my 7970m compared with new cpus....maybe the barebone can handle something newer, isn't it?

second generation should be swappable - but im not 100% sure because i dont do this :)
maybe some other ppl can confirm or deny

920/940xm on 3.3GHz 3-4cores is not to much weaker than 3610qm ivy bridge - but that cost power and temperature = mean no easy to set to max for these cpu without doing additional modding

then swapping [if possible] to 2820/2860qm would be the best because no temp, power draw so big like on 9x0XM pushed to the max

additional ivy bridge platform on msi must have nvidia cards because OPTiMUS - then no ati cards possible

going by this data even your i5 can possibly use all 12GB RAM! I have had my GX660R with 12GB RAM no problem, first with i7-740qm after with i7-940XM again, no problem :) stop relying on datasheets from manufacturers if there are more people speaking of what theyve achieved and JUST DO IT :)

    like man says :)

youre talking nonsense, 7970m + 920xm / 940xm is no way a bottleneck! only bottleneck can now be 7970m compared to desktop 7970 :) its like almost 3 times faster vs mobile version but its hard to beat single GPU like 7970m in any other platform 1 vs 1. Benchmark Score means nothing most of the times, you need to see how your games are going after the setup, simples!

well I would think 940Xm will always have more kick from the full stop, 840qm is not a slow CPU by any means but realistic benefit may not be the most noticeable. of course if you tinker little bit with XM cpu, you will understand it was worth it :) it will help in other words no mater what GPu you have CPU always helps

I've just upgraded to 8GB RAM, tried 12GB but it didn't work (BIOS or more likely processor limitation). Sadly i5 doesn't support 1333MHz so I'm running at 1066MHz.

did you change in advvance bios settings memory frequencies from 1066 to AUTO? or just left alone after RAM installation and decided its not supporting 1333 because its running 1066?

Ok here is my painful experience with OEM 2960XM Chip... apparently it had some fault and it would not work properly. It seems like its running ok but odd time system would hang and freeze for no reason, also GPU would not take full load or would be super laggy and a very bad DX11 rendering resulting in BSOD... truly something unexpected, but its the chip to blame as my 2860qm only managed stock to stock cpu and gpu to pull ~160W 2960xm was able to pull 182W and still for some unknown reason this would happen. While trying out Crysis3 2960xm would bring unplayable experience where 2860qm was smooth 50-70fps :/ totally weird... Xm cpu didnt throttle or anything it actually behaved better in temperatures VS 2860QM chip but I have a feeling that this chip has cooked enough heatsinks before getting to me so its so bad at the moment it cant cope with stock power...It didn't crash trough the benchmarks so I was able to compare the performance which was nice bump BUT hardly worth all the freezing and locking up scenes, so CPU is going back to his owner next week...

here were my 2860qm based scores, temperatures and settings breakdown:

I'd recommend MX-4 or IC diamond as more modern pastes but it should do, maybe want some cleaning compound to get the heatsink and chip as clean as possible (akasa make a nice one).

im use mx2 :) mx4 maybe better but really you need focus on polishing heatsink for sticking almost without paste on center cores :)

also never use any chemical to cleaning :)

colour-free vodka / alcohol does the job absolutely perfect with some thin wool cloth.

    I used MX-4 = GOOD
I used Phobya HeGrease Extreme = Super GOOD
I Use now IC Diamond 24Carat = Cant imagine anything better than this. Alot of money for little bit of compound but its a serious stuff

Preparations for 920xm? Download throttlestop 5.0 and read FAQ of the software

Polishing only required after youve done everything and you are still with too high temps , "if its not broken - dont fix it" - ITS A GOLDEN RULE

Just got in my V4 95% LCD, some nice improvements and NO DEAD PIXELS ;) very pleased. Viewing angles somehow seem the same as the previous mate AUO panel I have been using but colours are slighty bit richer :) happy with it, now there goes the quest for perfect RGB calibration... or maybe anybody has perfectly calibrated profiles for AUO B156HW01 V.4 ?

Would highly appreciate if you could share this, thanks!

Hi there. I just installed the newest vga bios to my gx660 with hd5870m. And it was a mistake. Now i have 405/1000 instead 100/150 mhz on idle :(. It makes 11-15degrees more. Anynone have one of previous version like up there? My current version is 012.020.000.045.038815 (BR38815.001)
