Ok here I go, installed my i7 940XM cpu, as you can see in photography I took yesterday it all looks good as OEM CPU but all this labeling are highest quality scam, its either QS or ES cpu, CPUz reports as (ES) HWinfo as QS / ES
(I assume I have QS version since HWinfo gives model of CPU as QS stepping please correct me if Im wrong, also was 940XM ES not 65W TDP??? This reports everywhere as 55W!!)
however , I tried wprime and throttlestop 1024M benchmarks and they run in at approx 70c tops with turbo fan on all time, right then battery barely continues to charge, kinda slow, but I doubt I get in to situations where I face gpu at its stock and cpu at its stock discharging battery while running from AC due to lack of power... (or will I?...) I will try run some shooters like RainbowSix vegas, masseffect2, will see how it will run...

painful experience... tried 24x multipliers on all cores ran smooth but began to power off my psu which comes back to life after repluging to mains... not doing this OC again (or I need some bad- PSU NOW ... everyones talk about 180W , what are the part numbers or who can advice the suppliers for them?)

    EDIT UPDATE:

average use/iddle temps between 49 and 52c max with automatic fan control, looks cool and happy, MX4 works well I suppose (ThrottleStop off, just monitoring runing)

tried RainbowSix Vegas 2 for approx 20minutes , battery was fully charged @100% and stayed that way at stock CPU and stock GPU settings...

while gaming temperatures hasnt crossed 76C + on CPU and not more than 60C+ on GPU, very happy!

While had unit apart during upgrade of CPU I replaced GPUs thermal compound and also applied thin layer of MX4 on mosfets and ICs around the GPU so same the memory chips before reapplied the thermal pads back on, I think this all has made huge difference in temperature stability (Ran this game with no turbo fan and it didnt spin up fast like it would heat up alot, very nice )

    EDIT UPDATE #2:

I forgot to mention CPU makes this weird high pitch zizzing buzzing noise yet its very quiet but noticeable in quiet environment... took this video with my iphone yesterday, please yos have a look and listen and tell me if thats normal or something I should be concerned about (turn up your speakers while playing, altho I moved iphone mic zone right close over the cpu heatsink base so sound is well hearable)

 HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?! When I'm playing BF3 or Driver San Francisco, my GPU temperatures hits max of 79°C without Cooler boost and about stable 68°C with cooler boost running all the time

Well I have my laptop on Lifted-pad (no coolers) so asume gets extra air??

I will try Driver SF this evening will see whats the temps

Alright so I ran Driver San Francisco now in Ultra high settings 1080p FHD for approx 20mins, stock cpu stock gpu and standard auto cooling settings no manual turbo cooling switch, cpu went max at 80c I have seen averages 76c+ and gpu max went to 73c+ ,
after more warmup with turbo fan on I got max of 77c+ cpu and gpu 78c+ but that was only one peak while averages still 73c+

RainbowSix for fun set multiplies on all cores to (x24 x24 x18 x18) CPU stayed sub 78C+ GPU didnt go past 60C+ ... what a good shooter game :D

anybody reviewed my CPU noise video?

It's a bit loose and requires wiggling the cable to charge the battery.

well you gona have to take apart the whole rig and then learn some soldering on some dead boards before you touch that one, have video of disassembly , practically applies to GX660R as well

    MSI Notebook GT660 --- Disassembling - YouTube

you will need new DC jack, check measures of your plug and get appropriate for your laptop (first must disassembly to see pinout of the DC jack to the board)

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE ... Playing on Stock CPU i7-940XM + Stock HD5870M brings my PSU serious outages, I will notice FPS drop while gaming then I minimize to see the power options and I see battery right at 70% LOOOOL downright from 100% tops hehe so 120W PSU aint going nowhere with my RIG... :(

While in rainbow six maxed out etc etc CPU reached max 70C+ stock speeds untouched / GPU bumped twice to 86C+ ... is that alright kinda? (turbo fan on, runtime hour and so)

if you know how to hold the screwdriver and know what soldering iron does - do it yourself and do it right, save costs of labor which you can easy do yourself, but if you havent got a clue, dont cheap out and bring it to best reputable service you can find around, good luck

Oh, now I get it. With the pad you must have a bit better temperatures, even that our notebook gets the most air through keyboard. Anyway, thank you for testing those temperatures for me ;)

im really concerned... dont know what to do... that 940XM cpu runs smooth, aint too hot , but its too demanding on power, so Im forced to get another PSU coz I cant even play games at all stock multipliers and gpu clocks... what a handicap feeling. altho I dont know if I felt any performance bump from i7-740QM to the 940XM ... battery life become terrible, approx 1h now on average use where I get 2-2.5h from i7-740QM installed... so I lost mobility and ability of playing games LOL ... messy stuff, im so undecided right now, Ive installed my i7-740QM back tonite and Im running it right now, approx 10C+ cooler, been runing 45 minutes now and battery still shows 1h10min left, and so far so good did not feel any step down..

to be exact this is the model of my screen: AU Optronics AUO B156HW01 V5

if so, can anyone share the exact part numbers of the best FHD 15.6 LCD for this machine to get?

Are we still saying this is crappy LCD? just in case we started of wit the wrong foot by base model name in first post

The 940xm is much more power hungry than the 740!! You will need to get a more powerful PSU. I got a liteon one as the original PSU was shutting down due to my 920xm and 6970m.

where did you get it and what is the full part number/model number etc?

What wattage is it yours? 150W or 180W ?

    Any modifications to DC Jack/plug?

    Hi!
I have an GX660R with an i5 and 8GB of RAM and a few das ago i bought a Samsung 830 SSD with 256GB. Now i have the same Problems with the installation as the other forum-users. I have cloned the whole C: drive with Ghost but it wont even start when i set the BIOS to IDE. So i googled a lot an found this forum :). I tried to download your superb BIOS but none of the downloads work any more :(.
PLEASE, can you help my installing my SSD and send me your BIOS and can you also give me some tips how to go through the whole process of flashing BIOS ect ...
I would really appreciate your help! Dont want to blame myself by crashing my system just because of this beautiful piece of hardware ;).

First of all thanks for the quick answer! Second, i am not at home at the moment and i don´t have my laptop with me xD, sorry for that. I shouldn´t have make that much stress when i´m not able to give y´all the information you´ll need. By the way, can you give me a short briefing how to update my BIOS at all, no matter which version. I have never done that before :(. Just afraid to do something wrong. Experimenting with other laptops is a lot more fun :).

Allready have found something that really gives me some hope in getting my system running. I´ll download the "live update 5" software and see if there are some major changes in my BIOS, which i am hoping. Hopefully that will do and everything will work properly.
Anyway, i´ll keep you up to date in my progress and i hope for having some good news.
For the moment, thanks a lot !

for GX660R you should use this bios (download direct from MSI support website - latest bios update for our rigs
thats the version which I have ,laptop already came with it, and I tried Samsung PM800 and currently OCZ Vertex3 120GB and it worked no problem at least for me. Also supported fresh enough Samsung M8 1000GB Slim Factor HDD at first shot too.
    http://download1.msi.com/files/downloads/bos_exe/16F1_30L.zip

    Guide how to update bios:

    DOS mode
    http://www.msi.com/html/pdf/How_to_make_a_bootable_flash_disk_and_to_flash_BIOS_f.pdf

    Windows mode
    http://www.msi.com/html/pdf/Flash_BIOS_SOP.pdf

read carefully, I suggest DOS all the way, 100% will be fine if you follow instructions, with WIndows Flashers I have had myself various fatalities where ended up replacing whole bios chip since laptops doesnt come with self recovery/flashback or dual bioses, do it carefully and all will be fine.

ordered myself little treat this morning

Sony Optiarc BD-5750H 6x BD-RW / 8x DVD±RW SATA Drive, since I had just dvd-rw drive which I sold today, here comes bd-rw drive

    (no vertex4 for now)

    Hey there.
Thanks for the links, updated the BIOS, worked really great. Now i have the latest version, also updated everything else but still can´t get the SSD to run. What do i do wrong? Have i forgotten any steps? When i build in the SSD and put the 2 HDD´s out i go to the BIOS and set the SSD to AHCI save & exit. Wont work, after checking BIOS again, the SSD isn´t listed, when i switch the mode to IDE it is listed but when i then try to run Windows it crashes.
    What now?

I didnt even tried IDE on mine lol, ACHI worked always on the first go, weird, let me look up some stuff for you(also maybe someone will upload alternative link for modded GX660R bios that support rest of SSD's)

other that that I will try to play around with bios editor prob tonite to see if I can adjust some stuff in there for you...

Confirm current bios version you have please?

Also did you try accessing advanced bios menu? ( SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+INSERT during MSi Bios Logo)

Try disable all RAID options in drive settings and try see what else can be adjusted maybe it will work that way ;)

Lol, ok :). Tried it, seen a Windows logo and then *pow* nothing -.- .
    Thank you !!!

My current version is AMERICAN MEGATRENDS Inc. E16F1IMS VER3.0L, 04.10.2011.

Nope, didn´t dry that so far. I´ll give it a try.

I made a Repair-CD in Windows an booted that one but after some time he told me that he can´t fix the problem. That also worked only with the IDE-mode xD.

    Could this cause the problem?

    obviously! LOL

try run fresh setup, SATA ACHI drivers sometimes arent compatible

install clean and Im 99% sure it will run perfect somehow, select ACHI in BIOS, in advanced bios menu disable ALL RAID features

    try and report

run in to advanced bios setup pressing SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+INSERT while booting bios on MSi logo, and browse all advanced features untill you find memory speed, it will be set manually to 1066mhz - I suggest to switch to AUTO and see what speed it will run itself then. BR

    EDIT:

btw I dont think you can get your memory runing anywhere more than 1333MHz unless you OC whole BUS clock, as even 920xm/940xm doesnt support more than 1333MHz for ram frequency

So for now i´m going to install it fresh on the SSD and see what´s going to happen. Hopefully will work, pretty sure it will. But wanted to save myself the troublle of a total installation. Damn Ghost raised some hope for nothing!

It supports only 1st generation i7 CPUs , best thing to go is 920XM or 940XM CPU, I was lucky enough to win an auction QS version of i7-940XM CPU in excellent condition just for 186eur including postage, so I was very lucky as they sell double the price easy on ebay, I have seen 920XM for approx 200eur on ebay including delivery, ofcourse both cpu are identical only the 940XM has 1x higher stock multiplier clock so its 133mhz stock faster but both overclocked go even so it really depends what you preffer (940XM ES / QS tend to run cooler and with less power stock VS 920XM ES / QS Stock, as I found out on many ppl feedbacks)

I will modify few versions of bioses and will upload links here

Downloaded Stock Bios file from MSi Support and editted options in XMP Profiles to "ENABLED" state .

    WARNING!
I believe BIOS has to work just fine, but please understand I can give no guarantees if it will work or will help, I take no responsibility if you damage your system by flashing it in any wrong way or shall BIOS would be corrupt (same rule applies to any content found on internet as long as it is not from manufacturer himself, so I assume you already know where you are going, "no risk = no champaign!" ) , do it all on your own risks, Im here just trying to help.
BIOS ROM FILE SIZE (4096KB) after modding remained exactly same VS original size, so I assume it is valid and ready for flashing.

I can edit any settings in BIOS file to your desired preference, If I get reported this BIOS works perfect I will make list of modded BIOS'es for GX660R little later ;)

    http://www.filefactory.com/file/2ffjuq2jn1d1/n/XMP_Enabled_Only_zip

Anybody tried this BIOS? Need feedback please. In case if motherboard bios gets damaged Im willing to get it fixed for you at cost of a new bios chip only which is few bucks, and you pay both way shipping of motherboard(or whole machine) I dont mind really.

Let me know please as I seen yet over 10 downloads and no feedback tsk tsk tsk ...

What benefit do I get from using those BIOS?

Also, late response... but anyways on normal usage you won't notice much difference between Core i7 740 and 940xm OC. After you start using more programs, heavier programs and some games you will.

the only game which I saw a massive increase in performance was Skyrim. went from 35fps to 55fps on same settings.

The rest either remained the same or so. Also, in throttlestop I recommend to disable its function and swicthc to battery mode when unplugged so your battery life won't suffer too much.

its for the user posted above who asked for unlocked bios Im uncertain whet more had to be unlocked so since it was talked about memory I just unlocked XMP profiles to ENABLED state, although Im unfamiliar too well how XMP works but I assume its RAM frequency and CAS LATENCY and voltages tweak settings you can adjust some way to increase memory performance if memorry dimms support XMP etc.

as for CPU I decided I will stick with 940XM for good, f#@k that battery life either way - its one heavy weight fight capable machine I shouldnt expect battery last me no time either way hehe ... and now I'm on the hunt for 180W PSU, I did noticed few FPS maybe, and lil lil better loading times over all on most tasks, yes battery suffers alot but hey this whole RiG performance aint free :D

I will use ThrottleStop battery profile with battery monitoring I suppose it will win me some battery time

I found in advanced bios menu I can set TDP TDC and multipliers for all four cores manually etc if I select to enable EXTREME CPU profile, havent played with that yet but I will once I get the new PSU, also for now Im running 740QM till I get the charger on hand.

Could anybody post the very finest version LED LCD 10880p panel that can be used in GX660R, I kinda begin to realize why this current screen sucks, just noticed how often I tilt the screen to have better viewing angle lolz....

how did it go with your OS install?

    Cheers

did you check my taken video in previous post where you can hear the noise of the CPU chip or either motherboard mosfets around CPU? just wanted to know if im not the only one with this weird thing lolz

Yeah I got that high pitched squeaking noise too when I upgraded to a 920XM. That's what prompted me to give the laptop to my old man and get an Alienware myself. I miss the audio system. :(

yes, thats it so Its normal :) ok, well M17x are pretty damn sweet rig too ;)

but I just love the current MSi :)

Im really curious to know from any owners around here of past GX660R upgraded models series if backlit keyboards have the same width and heighth and same ribbon connector for the motherboard as GX660R? If it is confirmed same - during the summer im getting this backlit keyboard and I will get it fitted then measure voltage and pinouts needed for specific backlight colour etc and retro-wire it to current backlight connections from the exterior backlight effects handswitch, maybe Iwill manage to get few different colours using current msi exterior led control software, etc 1 component loads less voltage for one color backlight to be lit up, two separate make different backlight due to different voltage provided, and all together may give other option again, experimental thinking :)

    Hey there :)

Finished just an hour ago with the new installation after i had to buy some DVD´s for the MSI Burn Recovery and copying all the data to my external drive.

    BUT !!!

When i tried to install 7 with the Recovery discs an error occured that said that the recovery environment was not normal! So i tried and tried and also went in the master BIOS to try to edit something but i just found the RAID 0 and dissabled it. Rest i set to AHCI but after save&exit he still didn´t recognized the SSD. So i set her to IDE and it appeared xD. Then i went through the installation prozess and installed the Samsung SSD magician and optimized everything but this software also told me to switch to AHCI for optimal performance.

So what can i do now? Change anything else in the master BIOS? If yes, what?

Thanks for your help so far :) really appreciate it !

weird, by any chance can you get normal proper bootable windows7 DVD ISO image and get it burned to DVD so you can install windows like FRESH COPY like on NEW MACHINE?

Its weird the way you get the errors.

So in ACHI setup your bios does not see Samsung SSD at all?

IDE is an alternative choice but it should work, I will try mod 1 more version bios for you in few hours time that may help you with samsung SSD. Tell me which Drive bay did you use to setup your SSD in? #1 bay closer to the laptops battery or #2 bay which is under the DVD-ROM Drive?

Maybe a friend of mine has got one.

    I know, i don´t get it too.
Look what i have found today: MSI GX660R Gaming Notebook SSD RAID Upgrade Guide Linus Tech Tips - YouTube
This guy did it exactly as i did, just with too lame SSD´s in RAID xD. I have ONLY my Samsung installed on the right site next to the battery(so it should be the one under the DVD-ROM Drive) to have at least my "old" system on the two HDD´s when everything goes wrong.
And when the guy in the video installs everything with the recovery he just sets up a new RAID, i don´t have to do that and went in the BIOS but only in IDE he will recognize the SSD :(((. This is really frustrating.

Ok , using recovery media from previous RAID setup HDD array to NON-RAID NEW setup is lame kinda... :) , I would never do that nor recommend to anyone, plus, compare to time youve spent trying to hunt down the issue with recovery media discs and, vs time you would have had to spwend just installing new softwares from scratch it wouldnt take you even half of restoration time hehe , just 2 cent

I have modded 1 more bios, I have altered SATA port #2 settings which is where your SSD is, at the bay closest to the battery under the palm wrist area.

    Modifications done to this BIOS:
    • XMP Profiles -> ENABLED
    • DDR3 RAM MHz Frequency -> Now set to Auto state, so it will run memory on best FREQUENCY (Previous factory default was 1066MHz)
    • SATA2 options -> Hot Plug : ENABLED
    • SATA2 options -> Port Multiplier : ENABLED
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/2jy7k0r7am3z/n/XMP_ENABLE_AUTO_MEMORY_MHZ_SATA2_PORT_MOD_zip

    and again:

    BEST OF LUCK NOW!

I TRULY BELIEVE IT SHOULD FIX WHATEVER SSD PROBLEM NOW

Oh WOW !!! This is great, thank you very much.
    One more thing :)

Before i joined this forum i tried to fix the problem by myself and found this
and hoped this would help. Obviously didn´t but since then a message appears after the MSI screen and before the Windows screen.
    It says:
    "Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
    Copyright bla bla

This product is covered by ... bla bla

Realrek PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller Series v2.25 (090106)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM. "

Than it shows the windows logo and boots.
Could i have done any damage with that???

Could a new version from the INTEL RST maybe also fix my AHCI problem?
Should i give it a try, if yes which version should i use?
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea..."Intel+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel+RST)"#

    best regards

no thats your LAN PXE Boot ROM starting, go trough bios settings and disable this USELESS feature, or wait few minutes i will upload new bios with this bios feature disabled. This has nothing to do with your errors of SSD not installing.

PS when after bios flash use ACHI mode in bios for your SSD, I will try mod 1 more version quickly with all necessary functions set (RAID DISABLED)

    Cheers

Ok, funny why it never before appeared, such stuff just makes the whole thing more complicated when you are not exactly knowing what you are doing xD.

I´ll wait xD. You should get an award for your help, really! Don´t know what to do without your help.

    Ok, next problem xD.

Downloaded the original BIOS and set up the BOOT-stick. Then downloaded your version and extracted your file to the USB-stick and erased the original...30L file.
    Botted and entered flash
    "REM @ECHO OFF
    bioschk.exe
    IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO WithNCB
    afudos.exe E16F1IMS.30L /P /B /N /K
    +------------
    :
    :
    +------------
-ERROR: Problem opening file for reading

great, Im gona try find some time next week to tinker with bios in security options, as Im really missing HDD password lock feature... and maybe will have new PSU here so TDP/TDC/Multipliers tests will go under load as well, wondering if after pre-set TDC-TDP and multipliers I can still adjust tinker these all settings with ThrottleStop or not, or if those would become factory limiting sttings... needs testing out

Need just one more helpfull information from you.

As a second drive, what would be better. A WD Scorpio Blue 500GB for 80€ or the Samsung M8 1TB for 109€ that you have installed?
Personally i tend to te M8 :). 30€ for a doubled storagevolume is worth the money i would say.

Hey guys... if i update my bios with a modded BIOS with XMP enabled for Corsair Vengeance 4GB (CMSX4GX3M1A1600C9), it will boost my GX660 performance about 10~15% or more?

As for storage , I think it speaks for itself: "STORAGE" , I feel more is better and for extra 30quid double the storage I cant see how could you possibly go wrong ;)

I have read some good reviews and Samsung M8 is a really nice dual disk design low-form factor HDD with a really impressive storage and fairly good benchmark scores as for such high capacity HDD. thats why I chose this myself, for major programs and tasks I run from my primary drive which is fast SSD drive, and even loading big files in and out didnt take much time as from HDD to HDD, I believe SSD here makes big difference here, example music librarry moving from my SSD to M8 HDD 1TB approx 55GB in volume took just approx 10 mins if I recall well, didnt really measured but I wasnt hanging around too long before it was done moving

Its more than enough speed as for storage drive plus you benefit of massive space, which is why you name this drive as STORAGE at the first place :D

unless you work with alot of video editing, I mean big DVD archives editing capturing and some very serious archiving and maybe AUTOCAD or other ultra intense large sized files tasks you should have gone dual 512GB SSD RAID0 all together, but since I dont think its necessarry, ACHI setup SSD primary drive and HDD massive secondary works wonders
