I use Majster BIOS as well, for my Micron C300 SSD.
Follow exactly what Majster recommedation in AHCI setting, and I am a happy camper.

By the way, just want to share a special MXM video moudle I am using - nVidia FX Quardo FX3800M. Got it from China Taobao. Just module itself, not heatsink. The nVidia 285m heatsink fits perfectly on the FX3800m.

Performance wise, it is on par with all the numbers from Dell Mobile Precision M6500 & HP 8740w. Temperture is quite low as well.

    Wow a Quadro in GX660!

The FX3800M is actually quite powerful, slightly over a 280M due to higher clocks !

Psshh I already have a beasty laptop. I'm pretty sure my GX660 with its current config puts down better numbers than even the newest MSI laptops, with the exception of the 580m editions. I am excited to see if the 7000 series is compatible.

Exactly... It's awesome to have this old computer still putting out performance that puts even newer computers to shame :)

I really want and need more info on the HD7000 series, because I want a new GPU now.... If I can't use the new Hd7000 series then I need an HD6990m now.

Anyone know if I can slightly undervolt the CPU to keep it even cooler? I am also considering overclocking it a bit over the x24 multiplier maybe to 3.4ghz. Last time I tried I had a bluescreen but that was the fault of the damm turbo button... which upped the BLK to 139 and the clocks to 3.6ghz.

if I can keep it around 90ish at 3.4ghz i will be a happy camper :)

The one thing I wish I could do was get a lower wattage CPU. The 55W guy kills the battery life and raises temps up. At stock I hit upper 70s C, which is ok I guess, but I would like lower. I'm not sure how much of a boost a newer Sandy Bridge or Ivy bridge would offer me in current games, since most games are more dependent on the GPU. With my 6990m I get avg 55fps in BF3 on 1080p and high settings full servers which I think is awesome. If I overclock the GPU I get a few more. I don't really overclock the CPU anymore because I didn't see much of any gain in the game.

What do you guys think my system is worth in its current config? I was thinking maybe $1000? No hardware problems, all works perfectly, and there are no major cosmetic flaws, no deep scratches or really any marks.

Haha, within the world of technology, even 6 months is old and we are sporting 2 year old hardware :)

Think about it, 2 gens old CPU, 2gens old GPU, 1 gen old sata connectivity etc haha.

By no means am I disappointed. The fact that this laptop still stands and challenges new machines speakes volumes about it. I am thoroughly impressed and happy with it.

As far as performance for games... I doubt you will see any improvement whatsoever for games even with ivy bridge. Specially since our CPUs run such high clocks making them less prone to be the bottleneck. With my old 740qm only skyrim had a real bottleneck that disappeared completely. No game maxes the CPU at all or comes close unless its single core and even then its potent enough still.

the GPU is where it's at.

anyone here undervolted their 5870m? I'm currently editing my vBios through RBE and lowered it to 0.8v on 2D and left the 3D at 1.05v. idle/2D clocks at 200/400 - core/mem. Though I'm still getting a slight flicker on the upper part of the screen when opening or switching to a new window while on 2D. Any inputs on the best voltage and clocks for 2D. Or maybe a screenshot of your vBios/RBE would be great!

Hello. Just bought GX660 with i5 460m and HD5870m ( still waiting for it ). What are my options for overclock CPU ? Is it a hidden BIOS menu, SetFSB or any other method ? I know i5 will be a bottleneck for this graphic card, or am I wrong ? I mostly play games.

You should be able to play games fine, the i5 is still a good CPU. Overclocking these CPUs is next to impossible mainly due to the low yields (need to mess with Bus speed rather than multiplier) which makes it a bit unstable, or at least I haven't successfully overclocked more than 5-10% any Core cpu outside extreme edition or QS.

Besides, not many games will require an overclocking from the CPU. Very few so far have actually demanded a strong CPU so you should be fine. Maybe you can get a nice 920xm later down the road, or just enjoy your machine as is.

So, what are you trying to say, is that I really can overclock i5-460m by 10% ? This will be great, it will be 250MHz :D more.

And if my only choice is to mess with Bus speed, than if I understand correctly I need to buy SetFSB ?

There is an application TDE which overclock CPU by 5%. Can I change some values inside this program to overclock CPU not by 5, but by 10% ?

Hi I also have a gx660 laptop and I'm enjoying it for almost 5 weeks now. Now I'm planning to add an SSD to my laptop because it's stock HDD is only 5400 rpm which is crap. I'm eyeing on Crucial M4 120gb SSD because what I have seen on Amazon and Newegg are positive reviews, 10% of these are 1-3 stars. Do you think it will work without flashing the bios because I'm really noob with this kind of setup.

Micron M4 won't work unless you flash the hacked BIOS.

If you don't want to mess with the BIOS, best bet would be Intel 320 series. Very reliable and should be just cost a little bit more. And I would recommend to go with a 160G version.

Hey everybody, was hoping I might be able to get some help here. A little while ago a capacitor on the my GX660R-060US gpu broke, shorting the board and also the power supply. After replacing the gpu with another 5870m I got on ebay everything works again except for the audio.

It doesn't play anything over the speakers and doesn't recognize anything when it is plugged in to the headphone jack or anywhere else. I've tried reinstalling the video drivers and realtek audio drivers to no success, anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

That's because there two audio drivers that you need. Go to Realtek website and download the Realtek one and the ati hdmi one.

Hey fellas, Ive got myself a MSI GX660R few weeks ago and im happy as f*ck right now!
Im very lucky I found this thread so I can share experience with yous :)

So my gx660r was equipped with:

    2x256GB RAID0 HDD
    i7-740QM CPU
    8GB DDR3 1333 Kingston RAM
    DVD-RW DL
    1080p LED Panel Display
5870 HD Radeon Graphics Card, came with standard 120W PSU from LITEON, got it second hand but so so barely used like every seal was still on the laptop and not a single hairthin line scratch on it so I felt like I got absolutely new machine! Especially it came in its absolutely full like new packaging with all to one accessories in it.

    Ok so here I roll,
I previously had OCZ Vertex3 120GB SSD drive, it went right in to it!
Got myself brand new Samsung 1TB M8 5400rpm HDD as secondary for storage
Ordered another DIM of exact same make model and speed and cas latency et etc of 4 GB so wil make total of 12GB DDR3 in the system
Ordered and already here just not yet installed BigFoot Killer-N 1102 WLAN card
and also today won i7-940XM in ebay auction, so I wonder, since I dont plan on upgrading my GPU and I more a fan of all stock performance VS OC'ing the system, so question is DO I MUST GET ANY BETTER PSU or my current authentic PSU should handle my system configuration without problems? The CPU I won was OEM Version 940xm mobile.

    Enlighten me fellas!

    Thanks in advance! :D

Ok I got the socket wattage meter-reader, so when my RiG is charging the battery and runing at same time it reads approx 119-123watt draw constant untill the battery level is 100%

When battery hits 100% I get reading of approx 60-66watt draw reading from socket. If I set lets say stress test with MSI Kombustor it would jump to 107-111watt draw from wall reading... also tried with few games like Crysis Warhead / Driver5 / Metro 2033 / Dead Space 2 ... all on MAXED settings and 1080p still approx same +-2watt, considering 940xm cpu is +10watt TDP VS 740QM CPU I believe that I may be just fit perfect for standard power adapter...? Please correct me if im wrong, thanks!

(PS: Im getting this readout with currently i7-740QM in the RiG...)

Stock PSU is enough for a non overvoltage HD5870m even with 940xm so you should be fine.

I, however, am planing on changing GPUs!

HD7970m... Here I come! :D very nice rig btw.

Osum! Thanks for the quick reply [ryzeki]

all is missing now is the CPU to arrive and I will be set.. Im pretty happy the way 5870m behaves on games (yeah I know could do lil better) but im not too pushed for new GPU just yet, have more important plans and stuff to do for the mean time so next 4 months is "no-more upgrades!" time... however I have my eye on one 6970m but... I would love 7xxx HD series over any other gpu (lets hope it will be compatible with current heatsink layout on GX660R) . I have recently experienced the desktop head to head 680GTX vs. 7970 battle and nvidia truelly kicked of AMD card... but I bet kepler mobile gpus are nowhere near release or may not be suitable for the GX660 heatsink design too...

Today my US chiclet keyboard has arrived, but in plain black with no red-marked buttons so took a nice tiny tweezers and worked my way out and swapped the red marked GX660R keyboard buttons on to the plain black new US layout keyboard. Since I got my RiG from Germany it came with German keyboard layout and all the different markings and letters and symbols.. was all so messy to type but I fall in love with this machine so much I nearly got used to the german keyboard layout till the US keyboard arrived... now im mistyping still due to bad habit lolz :D
New keyboard did not have the extra fastening fittings on the back of it, for two screws to hold it solid in the chassis frame, so I noticed I could have just removed these fittings from old keyboard which I did and did not took much effort really, laying them in to the frame of the laptop and then later clipping and pressing down new keyboard in made its own job took them fittings to exact locations they were meant to be, and new keyboard is here just like it was never taken out since manufacturing, delighted!

I was so so tempted for backlit MSI keyboard from newer models, get one and try retro fit it but kinda chickened out... dont know if it has same connector as GX660R and dont know what to do to make the backlight work(especially in certain colour LOOOL)

also installed my #3rd DIM or DDR3 today, and so did with the Bigfoot Killer-N wlan card, difference I could notice on wlan card instantly, faster connect to hotspots times, quicker pings and all over experience faster multitasking trought the web, well worth upgrading!
Feel in RAM hasnt been noticeable YET... I suppose this will kick in during hardcore gaming in long run and some memory intensive software use period...

    ONE QUESTION:

SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+INSERT repeatedly pressing down while laptop booting allows me in to the ADVANCED BIOS SETTINGS MENU where I can see things like RAID options to enable/disable such as: RAID0 RAID1 RAID5 RAID10, misc RAID settings, CPU overclock parameters from +4% to +25% I think, memory speeds manuaally from 1033MHz to 1600MHz etc, and many more... do I have standard bios in my case allowing me doing that or do I have machine with previous owner unlocked/flashed custom bios?
By the way when I got the machine I found this trick out and I went and changed my RAM speed from 1033as was set as default, to AUTO, which brought to 1333MHz, which I after went in and set as fixed speed 1333MHz for RAM, so as it stands now...

    Thanks for your input guys

kinda thought right now... is this too good to be truth?

    rungrung0902 | eBay

I won mine approx 200eur including postage...

he has more of them... 940XM OEMs cheap.... photo I noticed says "ES" but in listing he states:

OEM Version, Step Code: SLBSC ...

I hope im not getting ES or QS ... or even if it will be such non OEM version, how stable and powerful VS OEM will it be...? And any features would it lack VS OEM?

I hope it is OEM as advertised .... :(

Don't worry if it's a QS/ES version. The current ES versions around are basically final qualification samples so aside from maybe a bug or reading the component name in CPUz as ES version, performance should remain entirely the same as OEM.

I run mine all cores at 3ghz for general use, and when playing intensive games I sometimes consider 3.3ghz 4cores.

As for the GPUs, don't go for the HD6970m. It's a nice GPU upgrade but the newer HD7000m series are bound to be compatible if you work the heatsink a bit. I will try my luck with an HD7970m and see how it goes, but I will do so till june it seems.

As for the desktop version I think you mistook the GTX680 vs HD7970 fight. This is the first time since years where AMD closed the gap in performance (there is very little performance difference between current high end parts) and for once, AMD brought up a lot of features and now pushed GPGPU computing. Since the HD2000 AMD resorted to fight with great GPUs for the price but they didnt release high end single GPU solutions that could fight nvidia on the same level.

When both overclocked, both GTX680 and HD7970 reach the performance of both previous kings (GTX590 and HD6990) which if you think about it, its insane. Nvidia still havent launched other kepler GPUs, so they can barely compete.

Now, nvidia both dropped the ball and also raised the bar with mobile kepler so far. On one hand, the lower end got a very nice bump in performance. but mid range and high end range so far has been renamed or remained in similar performance. Hence why the HD7000m series shook the world right now, and it will make competition because now nvidia will launch something awesome to fight back!

But currently, yeah the HD5870m is still a great performer, but its very tempting to get nearly three times the performance :D

I need to change the Networkcard and my GPU and this is a completely new laptop haha!

    cool cool, thanks

I have just got reply from my i7 CPU seller stating, and I quote:

"this is a OEM SLBSC i7 940XM cpu!!"

    ,

and I asked if its E or QS or rebranded non OEM cpu I was told these great news so I take seller is for real and I hope I receive it asap.

Got myself Arctic MX-4 thermal compound to go on top of this beast CPU, also eyed out around for 7970 and seems they are cheaper than 6990m!!!!! just softly over the price tag of 6970m LOOOL!!!!!

Ive that card in my mind with full of want right now...!!
If its dremmel tool all that 7970m wants I have that, just pleaase point me to cheap 7970 someone hehehe ... ive bad habit , if I see something hot I got to get it overriding my other priorities and needs... hate it but kinda like it in other hand, addictive feeling :D

I wonder what are the power consumptions of 7970m VS. 5870m ... do we still need to look in to new PSU options... I wonder

Great news mate, 940xm is a beast processor and it holds its own even vs the SB quads. Nifty way to keep yourself up to date in performance!

As for the HD7970m.... most users right now are buying directly from ebay, from eurocom or other resellers and since it's not officially out or available, they are buying ES versions I think. They work great and have amazing performance! For price I dunno, but it should be on the $450 range.

And for PSU yeah you will need a new PSU. I am not sure the 150w PSU will be enough to power the beast, so the most likely bet is the 180w PSU at least to properly power your machine.

Even an overvoltage HD5870m necesitates a new PSU, hence why I use 150w.

And yeah for the Hd7970m it should be a dremel, plus some thermal pads and some patience haha. Hopefully it will work well!

940XM FTW thats what im talking about :)

Ive just did quick search and nottthiiiinng of 7970m is available anywhere to buy there all sweepped away by those "full of want" :D

i dont like the idea of ES, I rather wait till OEM version is being found even bit more expensive the day will still come :)

forgot to hit up on the wlan card in your plans, YES YOU MUST DO IT!
I had this original intel 1100 or 1000 wlan card in my GX660R, its original that comes with these MSi RiG's, and boy these cards suck , so many times it lost connection just for no reason, and the buggiest bug of all is if your lappy went to sleep and you wake it up, I could just forget about quick pickup of wifi again even in closest range, so I was always 10xtimes quicker to power off my lappy and power it back up again, so I could browse web again, that was embarrassing, up until today tho! after I installed my Bigfoot Killer-N 1102 all problems went away and connect back to available networks is nothing so easy like Ive experienced before, its like a dream to me :D best invested 30eur on any laptop I had so far got to say!

Anybody has had any impact with MSI GX660R Advanced Bios Settings? Im aiming to ask about safe Overclock default % parameter in bios settings. I can imagine its valid per specific CPU, so I am thinking should I use turbo option that calls out the specific bios set % increase in OC or I rather keep it stock non-turbo switched if I keep the original laptop charger? Talking about using this feature with i7-940XM

    Just curious

I personally don't use those settings, and haven't messed with them. I keep the 920xm in it's basic core speed and functions (disabled Extreme processor on BIOS) and then use throttlestop to put the multiplier in 1, 2, 3 or 4 cores at different settings.

I am currently using 23/23/24/26 (4/3/2/1 cores) with the stock BCLK of 133mhz. Using the Turbo button would overclock by 5% (the stock turbo setting) but that would make me go into bluescreen immediately so maybe my cpu is not stable with such BCLK changes.

You can try playing around with them if you want, but I don't know of anyone who has played with those settings.

and yeah I need to change my wireless card bad haha. I am currently even using an ethernet cable because the wireless suck.

I just might jump the gun to be the first GX660 owner with a 7970m installed. I don't necessarily need it because I haven't been gaming much anymore. I just want to see if it can be done and I've got 500$ I could drop on it. Plus I'm sure I could get half that for my current card, or maybe I'll donate it to my brother for his GX660.

Last I looked only a Eurocom card was available. I want a Dell OEM. Dell card plays perfectly in this laptop, at least my 6990m dell does. I don't want to deal with bios flash or incompatibility issues.

Only thing is I'm currently overseas and not sure I want to deal with the possibility of a downed laptop. If I were home this would be no question. Guess I'll have to decide.

Yeah I understand ya. Technically I have the money too and all, but I'm just about to leave for a job assigment, and I rather wait till i'm back before I attempt it. Most probably I'll be away for 1 month, hopefully less.

And also... well I haven't been gaming much lately either... I guess I don't really need the card... hmm. But I want it! Damm.

It's a stupid techy thing that I like upgrading. I won't be home till around November. Maybe the 7990m will be by then? I also actually contemplated selling my laptop and relying on my iPad till I get home. Then maybe see what's out then.

Yeah that works too. Hell even for general browsing i'm using my Galaxy Note much more haha.

But I really like this machine. It has served me well. It's almost maxed out spec's wise... I want to give it its last upgrades with the GPU and wireless card and then just use it till its useless haha.

first machine I ever felt this way like. And I have had so many machines, both desktop and laptops. This one just hit the sweet spot, the right way.

Thats it, so I want to have a real sleeper kinda way, not that I game alot or do super heavy computing often, but in case I need all the max power I will get it without questioning myself "WHY DIDNT I GOT THIS RAM THIS CPU THIS SSD THIS HDD.....?" So I have weapon sleeping under the palm wrists all time long.
Thats the main thing about my habbit, upgrading is the idea, having it maxed out and run it till its useless :)

I have got some BSODs if I set it to overclock in bios like to 10% or etc, it didnt gave up on +4% or +5% but I dont really like that idea overall too much, I rather not to use it and have raw stock performance.

Im bit new to this intel throtlesteping thing when I get my 940XM u gona have to guide me whats the trick :)

one big question I have here iching my brain... I had my SSD in several other laptops and never had any problems setting up in bios DRIVE PASSWORD LOCK, so it locks the HDD or SSD chosen with password in its bios, I have had password on my SSD when moved to MSI GX660R, and it prompted for the password when I first time tried to boot it but, password would not work for me , so I swapped drive back to old system, removed the SSD bios password and thrown the SSD back to MSI lappy, went in to MSI bios but wouldnt see HDD PASSWORD option anywhere just SYSTEM PASSWORD which is just so call motherboard bios password... now since this lappy can carry two drives it would be really deadly if both drive's BIOS passwords could be enabled and set(solely for security and privacy purposes)

Anybody has workaround or came to a dead end regarding this solution?

(PS: I got the tracking number for my 940XM today! couple more dayzz :) )

bumpski ... can anybody of GX660R owners check if yous can setup your HDD / SSD bios passwords???

Ok now I know what Im getting :(

    eBay Feedback profile for rungrung0902

one of the ebay winners from same sellers listings that won 940xm just left feedback that he got ES model...

I wonder do they tend to run HOTTER and may come with locked multipler and like that?
The downsides I could expect from ES model?

    cheers

Nah don't worry. Early ES CPUs had some bugs, specific ones, like calculations or perhaps wonky compatibility with certain software that identifies hardware like CPUz etc.

However, the latest ES/QS samples that are around are basically final engineering samples, which passed the tests so aside from a random bug like the name appearing as ES, performance and all should be top notch. It should behave extremely similar to the actual product so you shouldn't worry. I sport an ES 920xm and my performance is top notch, overclcoked massively and temps similar to my previous core i7 740qm CPU.

The only bug I have is that CPUz sometimes takes longer than it should to read my hardware. And that's about it so far. At least that I remember. I don't remember having any issues since I properly installed it and pasted it with a good paste.

Except my happy face when I had a 32M wPrime score of 8 seconds :D hahaha

Great, Im just hoping im not getting the very very early version of ES so I should be OK otherwise :) (maybe miracle will happen and I will get the OEM .. lol )

my 32M wPrime scores betwen 13.8 and 14sec ... on current 740QM ... was it 8 sec on stock clocks???

Nope, stock clocks was around 12 seconds or so, since its like 1.73ghz vs 2ghz on stock. With a 50% overclock, its 1.5 times faster, so I should take 13.8/1.5= 9 seconds or so... (this is not 100% accurate, just a generalization... )

My actual times are around 8.6 seconds, which is plenty fast. And I think my score was with 3.2ghz not the stock 3ghz I run at.

    wow, pretty cool :)

940xm has higher default multiplier right?thinks 24 vs 22? and higher clock by 133mhz VS 920xm ... cant wait till I receive this, I know in my own experience faster more potential CPU most times unlock good few FPS in overall apps use and espacially gaming, I know many would say I wont feel alot from 740qm to 940xm, but I still wana have the top performer under the hood ready for no mater what action feels it or not it will perform. whats the highest safe and temperature wise usable clock speed achievable on 940xm/920xm? Im leaning over to the side of OCing CPU, but only after I upgrade GPU .. still very curious

Well it really depends... both 920xm and 940xm will be basically the same. 940xm has higher stock speed of 2.2ghz I think, vs 2.0ghz on stock quad, and yeah on single core its up to 26 I think vs 24 of mine. But anyways the highest, stable 100% CPU usage all cores I have achieved in quad core is 26 multiplier meaning all 4 cores at 3.45ghz.

The problem is that temperature reaches 97 degrees Celsius. It doesn't get any hotter but thats too hot for my liking. Bear in mind this is 15mins continuous 100% taxing the full CPU.

I normally use 23 multiplier tops, as it only gets around 90~ tops or sometimes less at 100% usage. Normal gaming it gets up around 75C or so, or in very demanding gamees like skyrim it gets to 81C

You will get a huge performance boost in general. Skyrim specially... I went from 30-50fps to basicallly 50-60fps. It reallly did get a good boost.

I think 22 multiplier will be the highest we will need for gaming right now, until games become more taxing

    why 7950m ? why not 7970m?

some ppl manage to get those cards someway, although cheaper than 6990m, and faster than 6990m as well

Yeah, no reason not to mod and go for the 7970M, if you have a 6990M already it requires just a tiny bit extra.

Anyone know what does the PCIe half-swing or Full-swing mean in the advanced BIOS options?

Also, I don't know about your machines but mine was forced to 1066mhz in the memory, had to either change the setting to Auto or 1333mhz in BIOS to get the correct speed.

hehe thats exactly what I was wondering about in PCIe half/full swing option, weird, I came across to some examples back in 2003-2004 when ppl were talking about full-swing as very advanced future technology, nothing more and nothing accurate, but that was while ago and now u reminded me this hehe

yes, on mine it was also forced to 1066, in case I chose too high bandwidth I selected AUTO, and checked later - viola! Laptop booteed with AUTO - 1333MHz on ram! So I just went and set Static 1333mhz instead of AUTO since I know what my ram is going to run in default now.

I have decided to disable overclock in advanced bios menu so turbo button means nothing now, so Im literally saving whealth of my motherboard by doing this, because when turbo is enabled 4% and up trough the entire badwidth of FSB ir doesnt only OCs the CPU but the whole rig in each clocks environment I asume, so to stay in a safe side I went NO OVERCLOCKING at all, and since I no longer use RAID I disabled all raid features and just left my controllers on ACHI as I have primary SSD 120GB and secondary 1TB storage im happy with boot times and its damn sweet operation.

I still cant figure out how to get my HDD password to work in bios it does not show anywhere in troughout bios settings

I even checked and unchecked with reboots between settings save&exit from bios in option "HDD Password Lock - ENABLE/DISABLE" no effect... missing this feature badly.... Im trying to stay away from "hacked" bioses for this machine since I dont know how stable can it be and im missing only this feature... I know someone on this forum can modify and alter good few settings for GX660R bioses but Ihave no idea who and if they can see to fix missing features like I mentioned... very curious

Ok, now am I lucky or what! :D

    delivery made it today!

Night will come , will see if its not a print-over on ES cpu or what!

I trully hope its 100% OEM!

as for now happy over the moon!

    :D

Also, checked my Screen model is "AUO15ED" is that a good one or bad one as some ppl was chatting in terms of these GX660R LCD panels and some were thrown to dogs and some highly valued... which is mine if anyone know by hand ?

    Thanks

Hi guys. I have an EU version of GX660 (i5 460M,FullHD display,4GB RAM,HDD 500GB/7200RPM) and I want to ask you what are the highest GPU clocks that're stable for the original ATI HD5870M? Also how the performance differs with higher clocks? I'm now running it at 770/1070 and sometimes during playing BF3 the AMD Catalyst (the newest 12.4) stops running and crashes my game  Also I want to ask about upgrading RAM to 8 GB, do you think it will help a bit in a way of performance? It's maybe somewhere mentioned here already, but I'm new here and reading all those pages takes a bit of time :D

Quick question, is it possible to set fan profiles with this thing?

I have a 6970 and an oc'd 920xm, but sometimes games I'm playing arent demanding enough to warrant the full speed fan toggle!

Just having a hotkey/s to toggle speed increase or decrease would be great.

    Any suggestions?
    Mick

That's the standard model and it downright sucks compared to the LG screen or the AuO v.4 that seems a bit hard to find.

The difference in quality is night and day regarding colors, viewing angles, and contrast.

I don't think you can toggle besides Full speed and normal use. If you are going to game OC'd and with such high specs, consider playing with headphones and full speed fan. Otherwise you are gonna have a bad time. If you think about it having manual control over full fan speed might risk it that you forget to put higher fan speed and end up overheating your machine

There is no stable clocks for the HD5870m. Everyone has different clocks. Personally my memory is almost impossible to overclock due to stability issue. However, I am able to personally push my core up to 920 without much issues, and memory to 1100 only for benches because in gaming it downright crashes. That being said, my GPU is overvolted and not many are able to get such high clocks which could damage your computer so do it at your own risk. Generally most people manage to overclock around 800/1050 or so.

As I mentioned, some go higher core (like me) and some can manage high memory clocks. I generally only game with 810/1020 clocks, rarely push it higher.

As for the Ram thing, unless you are using many programs simultaneously, 4GB should work well enough for gaming and general use. I had 6GB for nearly 2 years and recently upgraded to 12GB. I didn't notice any change in performance, and I only upgraded because I got it for free.
