Well Ive ordered the 920xm extreme from laptop monkey, so hopefully should be here sometime soon :D Also ordered some arctic cooling mx4 and 0.5mm thermal pads just in case, and for when I get round to the gpu!

Now Ive been trying to gen up over in the 'Throttlestop' thread, but blimey its 95 pages, and the search function doesnt like '920xm' at all...no results found blah blah blah :(

Would anyone care to share their throttlestop settings with me? Just want to run all four cores at 3.2 when I press the turbo (wooooosh) button :D

    Cheers
    Mick

Hmm I don`t have part number . It was glossy screen. We had only several LG replacement LCD panels. Generaly we use AUO :(, but LG was much better . You shoukd ask somebody on forum with lg in his gx660 for partnumber.

Righteo, my 920xm turned up oin the post today :D

Sat down with a cuppa and popped her in! Best goop I had laying around was a small syringe of Arctic Silver.

While I'm typing this I've got Throttlestop running the 1024M TSBench test.
Its just done, and max temps got up to between 78-82C across the cores. Score is 671.913 (whatever that means) for 8 threads.

Anyone care to comment on how these temps fare against you boys n girls with a 920xm.

    Cheers
    Mick

BTW: All stock speeds at the mo, And while typing temps have settled to 52C

I just upgraded my CPU to the 920xm, but I had two unexpected shutdowns. Like resets...

It hasn't happened again but I was afraid the CPU was/is faulty.

I haven't tested much yet since i'm at work but I will try to test more later and see whats up.

Temps right now seem normal, idle around 45-50c depending on what im doing.

    what do you guys think?

Well your idle temps seem a few degrees lower than mine, it would be interesting to find out what your temps are on full load after 10mins.

Ive not had any restarts or anything, but I did go into bios as soon as the cpu was fitted to make sure it was recognised correctly, then saved. And as soon as windows booted it recognised the chip, installed it, then I rebooted. So far so good.

After the cpu installation did you REinstall the windows?
If You didn't Reinstall windows maybe old installation of windows responded that way because of old cpu settings.OR Maybe You conectors on cpu dont have good connection on the board.Try to take the cpu of the board and few times put in and take back,Lose connection on connector.
Try to see if you put to much colling paste on cpu .If you put too much it will short the chips on the CPU.

I said all possible reasons :)

Probably too much cooling paste on cpu. and short on top of the cpu because of too much paste
Or losse connection of the cpu with motherboard

Well it only happened that one time as soon as I booted and it said CPU installed, and I needed to reboot but the machine rebooted itself. I am using it so far and no more shutdowns/reboots, I even fired up a couple of games to test stability (Batman AC and skyrim)

I will keep testing. Right now this is a temporary install as I will change the paste to IC Diamond 24, I just wanted to quickly test the CPU and see if it was working fine.

So far it is, but it did scare me a bit with the unexpected reboots.

I also immediately fired BIOS and it was recognized as Intel Core x920 @ 2.00ghz

I wonder what caused the reboots? As for temps, don't hold your breath, its cold around here haha, and my current full temps are like 93C with the awful paste im using. I don't plan on pushing my machine right now lol, I just wanted to test it.

My old CPU 740xm had this black film over the chip, covering all except the core itself. Should I use that same film over my new 920xm or should I keep it installed without it?

Well the normal GX660 does not come with the LVDS cable for the full hd panel. Unless your laptop was already equipped with a 1920x1080 res panel, you will need a new different connector.

After the CPU installation when you put new paste you need to give it time to cure. You can't put new paste and test CPU right away. But idling is ok for CPU and new paste. No woder why your cpu temp is 93C

See if the film fits on new cpu and put it on maybe you have connections from cooler to cpu chips you need to isolate them with that film I had problems with that too on other machine. The computer had sudden restarts because of that.

    Yeah you will be alright.

I know, I just needed to test the cpu because I won't have another chance due to work. I'm out of the city. At least it works now. I dunno what it was.

Well the film did fit, I put it on the new cpu just in case. when I repaste I will make sure everything fits in place correctly. I did check the CPU fitting and all, but maybe the black film is a bit loose.

I didnt bother swapping over the black film thingy, it just looked like some sort of electrical insulator, first time Ive seen one on a chip, wasnt worried about it not going on :D

Ive got some MX4 paste coming in the post, but if my temps seem stable and good enough, then I wont worry about disturbing it all again and just leave it as it is.

You are OK then Just try not to short chips on top of the cpu with cooler thats 99.9% causing sudden reboots
And dont worry about loose black film its only there for insulation not for thermal dissipation.

Hmm... I might remove it when I repaste. Im not sure its necessary at all. since its working for you I guess I dont need it.

But unlike you I will 100% repaste haha. The paste I use its generic for desktop PCs and I dont trust it that much.

    So far everything is working.

Hi, I am planning to buy this laptop (i5-520m, 8gb, hd 5870) and I wonder if the screen quality is great? I know that its only 1366x768 which is great for gaming but I'm also eyeing on GT683r (i5-2410m, 8gb, gtx 560m) which has a full hd screen, I am worried about the full hd screen, i read some threads saying that full hd on 15 inches is not great. Will my eyes strain more on full hd or not?

    Hello My Friends
    TODAY I WAS SHOCKED!!!

I started dissassembling My Stock GX660 FULL HD lcd Screen and when I dissassembled it I was shocked what I saw! The Stock lcd panel was AUO B156HW01 V.5 and on PCB board was written AUO B156HW01 V.3....
    I'm confused???
I taught that I have Chunghwa LCD panel in my GX660 because of very bad viewing angles...

I ordered from ebay LG Philips brand - LP156WF1 Matte
    Did I make a mistake!????????????

the AuO B15 V.5 is the standard full HD panel used. It is crap with bad viewing angles and so much brightness with WLED that blacks are grayish.

V.4 is much better, but so is the LG. Most AuO are really average or mediocre, few are good.

You made a mistake in what? the panel looked like crap, so you ordered a better one. I don't see any mistake.

To all GX660 owners with 1080p panel, do you play on 1080p or do you lowered your reso?

Someone told me that playing on 1600x900 on 15.6" is much better than 1080p because 1080p is meant for 17" gaming.

    You are welcome!

I only play in 1920x1080, which is my native. What the person was telling you is that at 1600x900 you get much better performance, and having a 1600x900 screen is better for gaming.

However you get less realstate and stuff on screen.

In other news! I repasted with IC diamond 24 and now my max temps so far are 92C.... when overclocked to 3.3ghz across all cores stressed 100% with no additional help in cooling! :D

normally not even 75C is achieved, and my skyrim performance skyrocketted to 60fps in ultra... pretty darn awesome.

my WEI score is 7.3 total, 7.5 for CPU!

How hard is it to do these upgrades? I have played plenty of times with normal computers, but not that much with laptops....is there a walkthrough for MSI GX660 upgrades?

I didn't realise your dislike of the v4 was down to your experience with the v5. That's a shame for you, but we are each entitled to our own opinion :)

I'd read on these forums that there are a lot of cheap fake v4 screens floating around on the internet and kuzotronic were recommended as one of the few places to get a genuine v4 screen. The guy is a well respected member of these forums, so for me £150 for a gen v4 is worth every penny :)

the good news is i managed to successfully flash the modified bios - but the bad news is that its not giving me any different performance out of my SSD

when i use HDtune to benchmark it on my desktop my kingston ssd had 250MB/s
on the laptop i have only 160MB/s

the good news is i managed to successfully flash the modified bios - but the bad news is that its not giving me any different performance out of my SSD

when i use HDtune to benchmark it on my desktop my kingston ssd had 250MB/s
on the laptop i have only 160MB/s

Isn't that because of the difference between SATA 600 vs SATA 300?

my desktop definately has the older chipset - i bought my desktop about 6 years ago and it cant possibly have any sata3 ports.

as far as i know both of the machines have sata 2 ports and they should be 300Mb/s

SATA has overhead, my M4 could only run at 270MB/sec in my 7738G. Thats about the most you will ever get.

There are many threads in the SSD section about improving SSD performance on mobile chipsets.

Unfortunately I haven't tested in 3DMark yet, since I'm away from home and I am using 3G to connect right now. It's not a good idea to download the software with my limited download!

Ill try to test as soon as I can.
