Anybody here with a GX660(R) that's the sandy bridge variant?

Really hesitant about jumping the gun here, as it might be incompatible with a 6970m~

And to the people who did the bios flash (to enable raid) is it the latest 660r bios listed in msi's site? thanks.

The only minor flaw is the keyboard flex. My unit proved to be the best bang for my money at the time I purchased it (5 months ago). I´ve had no issues till now, not a blink of an issue, to be honest. I did a Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit clean install, but it was just a choice, not that I had to format due to problems. I use the lappy a lot, and I mean a lot. Temperatures are a joke: 65ºC CPU and 58ºC GPU (swear to God) AT MOST, after a long full load, like heavy gaming for 2 hrs, thanks to its Turbo Fan. I didn´t even repaste, OC or flashed a new Bios version. It´s stock. All games maxed out, except Crysis, wich is set to high instead of very high. Removing the bottom to reach the fan to blow the dust or repasting is a snap, in opposite to Asus.
I hope you find my opinion helpful. Maybe I got lucky and was sent the best unit available, but I think not.
    Greetz.

Hey guys, any way to overclock our cpu aside from abo's Shareware version of SetFSB? I used the free one before in my m17x-r2, by tweaking the PLL control registers under the Diagnosis tab.

Anybody done this sort of tweaking before? thanks. :D

Does the freeware work on the GX660?, because I can't make it work.

Or have you only tried the shareware version?

Well the clock generator that's used in the shareware version is also here in the free one, it even reports the correct fsb and cpu frequencies. The only thing that doesn't work is the slider, i move it even one place to the right, things go funky with the readings, like -32 fsb lol.

Alrighty, just donated to get Abo's shareware version of setfsb. It now works perfectly lol. getting pretty decent speeds with 162 base clock in my i5-480m, temps ain't that bad either considering I haven't replaced thermal compounds yet. :)

Sorry to be picky, but it's not an FSB, it's the base clock.

I can't wait for my 16F2 barebone, wont be able to overclock it using the base clock since it's sandy bridge (just got a cheap i3 2310M for now, about the same as a 2.5ghz i5 first gen, and will look into getting a 2820m later).

    Should get it Tuesday :).

I very much doubt a different v of the same model with the same connector would have compatibility issues.

Well since the release of LED backlit screens its simply swapping in any panel with the same connector.

I believe all these 15.6" ones share the same type.

    @meaker

in the end i dissassemble the screen just enough to peek on the type, and its actually not auo, its chunghwa claa156wb11a, but since that it is LED, and uses the same 40 pin cable, and the connector is in the right place, im gonna go try the auo bw156hw01 v.4 anyway

    hopefully itll work perfectly ^^

    Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you could help me. Yesterday, I received my gx660r and I was initially very impressed, but I soon came upon a massive flaw that will likely end up me returning the laptop unless someone can help me fix it - the trackpad.
Now I know that as a gaming laptop, you're going to want to use a mouse - while gaming. However, I intend to use this for other things and, most importantly, on my lap, which requires that I use the trackpad.

My issue is that it doesn't handle scrolling correctly. It's a Sentelic track pad, despite the fact that the main msi site implies that it's a synaptics scroll pad and as such scrolling is done by tapping the top right and bottom right corners of the trackpad. This is HORRIBLE, I want to be able to slide my finger to scroll, live I've done on any other laptop out there for the last decade.

I've tried updating the drivers, however the msi site has been useless as it thinks I should have a different track pad. I tried various sets from around the web, but either they show a "slide" functionality in the config menu, but don't actually work, or they only permit the annoying "tap-to-scroll" method.

Have any of you guys figured this out?

    thanks.

Hi i am new to the forum and i also have a problem i have had a msi gx660r for about 6months hardly touched it because of my desktop but as my gfx cooler fan has broke on my desktop i am now using the laptop as my main comp until i get a new card.
i was wondering if you can activate the cooler boost while the lid is closed so without pushing the touch sens button because once i close the lid the fan boost goes off.
any ideas on the matter would be greatful thanks

I am excited to hear that the GX600 series with the 570m (vs 460m and 560m in current models) will be coming out very soon. Now, I'm just hoping that the barebone 16F2 version will also get a 570m option before early September, which is my deadline for getting a laptop.

Do you guys think resellers like XoticPC will offer the 570m in the 16F2 soon, since its flashier cousin the GX680 has it? I'm interested in the 16F2 due to its more subdued appearance and also lower price tag.

I think you can´t, but I agree with Meaker. You don´t need Turbo Fan when you put your lappy to sleep or hibernate; you don't need it even when surfing the Internet or doing "light" jobs, as the laptop won´t overheat. Turbo Fan is useful while gaming or encoding videos, for instance. Remember that your fan has a lifetime, the more intensively it works, the shorter it will last. IMO.

How hot? Have you checked the temps yet? Mine tops at 65ºC on CPU and 58ºC on GPU (swear to God) after gaming for hours. And I haven´t replaced thermal compound, it´s completely stock. Run HW Monitor while gaming and check the results. I think you will be amazed.

MSI sat down and really worked out the cooling on this casing well, they even pull some air from around the keyboard so the top stays really cool.

    Hey!
I'm thinking of buying this laptop!
but i have a few questions:
which is better 660 or 660R?
should I wait for the 680?
where do I get the 660? an online seller? xoticpc has moved on to the 680.

    Hey chaps,

Just had my 660R back from msi due to a faulty RAM stick and buggy BIOS but got it back with the buggy BIOS fault still present. Anyone else have issues when you hop into BIOS and it sees multiple copies of devices to boot from (seen up to 31 copies of the optical drive before) in the boot order menu and will hang also in BIOS on 'save changes and exit' rather than exitting and rebooting?

Just checking its a specific fault and not an undocumented 'feature' they all suffer from. Appreciate feedback if anyone else's machine does this?

You need to get a cable from a 1080p version of yours or a 683R.

I have not searched for MSI spare parts however.

I´ve been looking at gentech pc, but this model ( gtx660r ) isn't in stock, does somebody knows if Ken have it in stock?

Cuz I want a gaming laptop but now I´ve just noticed that I don't need so much "gaming power" cuz I have had and g73jh before and it was enough! and I think the gtx660 will be perfect and more because of it price!
