What is your plan after unlocking the beast? Games? Or benchmarks? Just curious, hopefully you make it happen!!

I can't do it myself. Just found out from a programmer that the checksum is a 256 byte (2048 bit) value at the end of the file that can't be broken by brute force; would require disassembly and linux, something I know nothing about.

Yes I just want to overclock. Both.

I'd like it to happen but I doubt it would.

The upper portion of the chassis where everything is stored might be too small.

If you look at the the p870's they have a massive vapor chamber to keep things nice and cool.

I think we are more likely to see a 73/75 version with single xx80 or dual xx70 as config options paired with a desktop.

thats why im asking for a gt93vr lol newer version. they up the height on 83vr vs 80s anyway im sure they can make new laptop with very similar design. i'd for sure buy it if heatsink and cpu are good, which i have no doubt msi cooling is excellent.

Oh if they can manage to pull it off and have it refined by the time my upgrade cycle rolls around. I'll for sure go for that if they roll it out.

I'd think we'd sooner see something on the 7x due to the more plentiful screen options. Component options etc.

Though that being said, if they swap the two ram slots on the bottom to the top, drop the BD bay for storage space I'd think in theory we could fit a compact vapor chamber on the bottom. I'm not up and up on my physics.

    Hello, I am about to buy gt83vr with 6820hk + 1080sli configuration.
I've used alot of clevo and alienware laptops but never used a MSI one.
How is the temperauture of this monster for CPU and GPU under heavy loads like 3dmark or 3dmark11?
And is there a unlocked bios available for it?

    Thanks.

My temps usually stay under 75c. The only time I have gone over it was 45c in my appartment.

Not officially but sven on the msi forums might have something for it.

Somewhat off topic tech question since i'm not exactly sure what to be searching for, but are there any articles explaining how the GTX1080s in SLI (8x and 8x i'm guessing?) don't hog all the PCIE lanes (there's still the audio stuff, nVME SSDs, wifi card, etc) even though the 6820hk only adresses 16? Does the chipset get it's own extra lanes?

It's a brand new design high frame rate, higher definition dedicated external monitor, that probably cost 1/2 the cost of the GT83 by itself, I'd expect it to outperform an internal laptop display. :)

The internal 18.4" IPS 1080p monitor will overclock to around 100hz (90hz-120hz), you can set a custom resolution with the refresh bumped up in the Nvidia Control panel:
    Nvidia Control Panel Custom resolutions.JPG
I set up a few for different game average FPS, and set a frame limiter to refresh+1 to eliminate or reduce tearing.

Asus has a 4k G-sync 18.4" internal display, but it's a custom panel exclusive to their lineup. Hopefully MSI will introduce one of their own someday...

Testing the overclock to 100hz in the NVCP is a good idea since you can press escape quickly to abort the test if the screen goes all liquidly on you.
If it works, I highly suggest using ToastyX Custom Resolution Utility to create a 100hz refresh rate rather than the NVCP. The NVCP tends to create *GPU scaled* resolutions, and there are some issues with some games when using refresh rates created with the NVCP rather than through an EDID override (ToastyX CRU).

This exact example won't apply to your system, but on (laptop) monitors that have native 120hz support but *NO* 60hz support (a bit silly), some games require 60hz to run full screen. These games will just run windowed on 120hz screens. Using the NVCP to create a 60hz override will cause some of these games to hard lock the system. Dark Souls is known to do this. With ToastyX CRU, the game will work fine (you may have to reset the in game options to default first).

I disagree. No sense messing around with another utility when Nvidia control panel has a built-in custom resolution. I've not experienced any problems with it changing scaling, and neither has anyone I've helped set up custom resolutions in NVCP.

If there are game specific overrides in Geforce Experience then he can deal with that specific game profile to disable scaling or DSR added by Nvidia's specific game profile. I don't use GFE myself, and don't recommend others use it either. Keep it simple and do all of your game settings yourself, then Nvidia won't be making game setting changes or phoning home behind your back.

If he wants to play with other tools too, that's great, but I don't like forcing people to get too bit twiddly outside the basic tools available unless it's absolutely necessary. It scares people off, and it's rarely required.

Next you'll be asking him to dump firmware so you can map the twiddle points to unlock GT83 power limits, and other wastes of time ;)

I don't use GFE. This problem is only with the Dark Souls games. They were known for lockups for ages if the "hardware" 60hz refresh rate were missing from the EDID.

It looks like there is a solution other than locking in your display @ 60hz, the first option which is possible by selecting a custom resolution - or default resolution in NVCP:

    " Steve Mahanahan [IMG] Dec 3, 2014 @ 3:37pm
    navigate to

    C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Local\NBGI\DarkSouls.cfg

    Find the line:

    "RefreshRate = "

After the equal sign imput 144 or 120.

I have mine set at 100 to match my monitor's refresh rate. IIRC I did have it at 120hz a few months back without issue."

Thanks for your reply and contribution to this thread. I have reviewed nearly all of the comments here, I just can't wait for the next generation of MSI GT series. I have overclocked my monitor to 75hz (i am timid). Then I still suck in PUBG, so whatever :D~~

If the custom refresh setting you test before making a custom resolution fails, and hitting escape fails, power off the laptop and power it back on and it will boot on the last selected setting, and you can try again with a slightly lower refresh.

Most will do 100hz, some a bit more, good luck. :)

Hey guys, I need some help here. I am planning to update my ram from 16gb to 32gb, so I check the original ram model from my GT83 is Kingston 7F98 MSI24D4S7S8MB-8, which I can't find anywhere. Is that the same one with Kingston ValueRAM 16GB 2400MHz DDR4 Non-ECC CL17 SODIMM 2Rx8 (Notebook Memory) KVR24S17D8/16?Or I should just update to kingston hyperx? Thank you!

im dying for CFL-S mobile 6 core cpu to come out and see how MSI tackle it. a new mobo with new BGA cpu or possibly flag ship change to desktop CPU, not sure. also the new cpu cooling how they will accommodate 6 core cpu by adjusting CPU heatsink yet again, MSI doesnt let people down on the size of copper they offer, not cheap like clevo.

Thoughts on GT83VR with 1070 SLI for $1900? I was looking for a laptop w/ a 1070 when I found this beast. Not so sure about the power supply situation.

What version of SCM do you have installed?

    You need this one:

    System Control Manager (SCM) v13.017.06089

After downloading the file, before extracting it, right click on the file > properties then choose Unblock from the bottom right otherwise all the files that are extracted would have a BLOCKED status and won't install properly

Nice. I never saw it below 3400. What was the catch and where did the 10% discount come from? Was anything missing (worst case - a power adapter)? Or you did not bite?

Report it to MSI via a support ticket, it may require a new update to SCM, it's likely MSI will see this themselves and post a new SCM update soon, so be on the look out in your laptops Support area for new driver updates - and look at the newest GT80 hardware release support area - that may get the update posted first :)

As @NuclearLizard posted the GT83's don't have the iGPU/dGPU switch... there is another support thread here at NBR for GT80's:

***The Official MSI GT80 Titan Owner's Lounge***
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/the-official-msi-gt80-titan-owners-lounge.769092/

@Phoenix which laptop support area at MSI did that SCM update come from?

Do you recall if the CD drive was on the cpu or the mobo controller?

I'm thinking of trying to raid some HDD's together.

It's too slow of an interface, 1.5 / 3.0 gb/s, vs 6gb/s for the 2.5"/ M.2 drives. The RAID will be slowed down too much by the slowest transfer rate.

I was was more thinking of doing a swap of the CD bay to a drive caddy and raiding the 2 2.5 inch drives together.

A store in my area has a sale on Seagate barracuda/firecuda SSHD's.

    4tb sounds fun. Lol

Edit: nvm I re read what you said. I'm assuming the CD is gonna be on the 1.5gbs line then. =/

True enough. I'll put that project on the back burner for now. I got a commercial license to worry about before I go putting money into hypothetical for fun.

Any clue if G-synch works over the edp function of the usb type c/thunderbolt.

It seems it would be a fun port to play with but I can't find any gadgets for it.

IDK, I haven't tried it a display + G-sync on that port, just storage devices - SSD and RAID'd HDD, which work fine - but they don't support G-sync ;)

In the end its all up to you, 1070's are good for 1440p. IMO I love my laptop, I have my onboard screen OC'd to 100htz, and I have an X34, that I have also OC'd to 100.
If you feel it would be too much, the gt73/75 line are also good, solid and dependable lines, as well as a range from clevo and clevo re branders as well.
In the end its about you and your needs.

@Kevin@GenTechPC hey dont mean to bother you, do you know if the Sata bay for the optical drive and the 2.5 inch drive would be RAID able?
Im thinking of doing a Caddy swap.

Are you talking about NVMe or SATA? We haven't done testing of RAID with the port in ODD bay. The BIOS can do either RAID 0 or 1 so there are limitations, even though the Intel CM236 provides up to 8 SATA connectivity and RAID can handle 0/1/5/10 doesn't mean you can get that configuration.

The SATA, I'm looking to see if I can raid the ODD bay with the 2.5 inch HDD bay.

This NB uses NVMe for RAID so SATA in ODD may/may not work. Perhaps someone else on the forum can answer you.

I RAID'd 4x M.2 SATA on the GT80, and apparently the 2.5" HDD can also be added into that RAID, but IDK about the ODD slot / interface.

You can't mix SATA / NVME, but all SATA or all NVME is ok, you can make separate RAID groups for NVME only and SATA only, the only unknown is if the ODD slot can be added into a RAID group.

Yea, I've been bothering him, then I bothered you. lmao. I'm looking to keep sata with sata so i should be good on that front. Ive been digging through all the sites I know allow customizations, no one seems to allow you to raid the HDD bay and ODD bay, so it might not be able to....I'd try and do it but I have a bit to do first. lol
