IDK, it depends on the market - Intel and other partners could take away business from traditional SSD manufacturing and distribution, making an end run to dominate the market.

To do that it would need to be cheaper.

Don't forget, Optane is supposed to be able to replace RAM too, making RAM cheaper as well.

Depending on the speed and architecture you might have a mix of fast ram and slow ram(?).

It's going to be interesting to see how Intel positions all the pieces.

except that optane prob wont be out for consumers for a long while until we see a m.2 prosumer optane ssd with a decent size. intel specifically targeting caching optane solution with harddrive first (lenovo got that first like 16GB/32GB for cache for HDD), and targeting enterprise space to replace ram with optane SSD at cheaper cost, more storage.

if a m.2 x4 pcie 3.0 lanes optane were to come out we will prob see something like 128gb/256gb for $300/600 cost wise.

Interesting, it would be something to keep an eye on on future platform upgrades.

I wonder how it works, if I recall the keyboard is a self contained bit with a flat cable running into the board right? I wonder if it can be swapped.

Though I hope they keep a close eye on it.

IDK why you keep mentioning this, it's been a given for many years - only one 18.4" screen choice is available, you should know that by now :)

Asus had a 4k 60hz G-sync 18.4" made special, and I assume they aren't going to let the vendor that made it share it with any other vendors any time soon.

Maybe Acer will release the 21" screen (or offer services to make other sizes, speeds, and resolutions), and then we can all move from 18.4" to curved 21" widescreens.

Until then the 18.4" screen is beautiful, we all love ours - it's very special and unique.

    Isn't that a PLS 1080p screen that's only 6-bit native?

The GT73 has much better screen offerings...

It's also a 17.3 inch screen. I do believe there is a much larger pool to choose from there.

    That's a GT73, it's very nice, but it's no GT83VR 1070/1080 SLI !!

I don't care if the GT83VR 18.4" is ever a 4k display, or even a 1080 120hz - we can already OC to 100hz+ and have been doing so for years. No tearing at high FPS with OC refresh display, so no need for G-sync :)

Your display disparaging hits no mark here. :hi:

G-sync isn't for the ears, it's for the inept at tuning their laptops ;)

Tearing isn't a problem on the GT80 with FPS limiter or app/NVCPL Vsync set to refresh rate +/- 1, we've been doing this on all laptops for years. G-sync may seem a nice idea, but it's not necessary, we've been running just fine without it for many years.

G-sync has been the most problematic part of Nvidia drivers for months now, and it's turned off more than on for many. It's a performance hit, and even when it works, V-sync is doing all the important work.

G-sync at 120hz has been reported to be useless, IDK about that personally, but it makes sense, given we have been running at 100hz+/100 FPS+ on the GT80 display using the settings I mentioned above, with no tearing - so no G-sync performance hit is needed.

If you feel you need G-sync, find another laptop :)

Well below 60 you might want to use gsync.

I test many games with (purposively) using setting that would induce tearing on my 144hz monitor, when playing I rarely notice any tearing and they happen so fast that I might not be annoyed by it.

At 60 the tearing problem is much worse and makes the gameplay very annoying (using HDMI to limit 1080p-60hz).

@hmscott is right @vulcan78 - the more refresh rate you have, the less need of a gsync to eliminate motion blur. It's a nice addition to overall laptop costs though.

*depends if your system can sustain the game at a high framerate too

I never use vsync. But if you absolutely need to then use fast sync (for pascal and maxwell)

Best solution, disable the wifi card on device manager and buy a decent usb stick.
Failing that, you probably have to take your computer apart, depends on how deeply buried it is, may depend on voiding your warranty.
Its only a small square shaped device, its easy to find, but its prob not worth trying to replace.
USB stick would get you something decent and you can send it back if it fails without having to open and mess around with your computer.

USB stick wifi is the worst idea I've ever heard, never do that again.

@hedehede81 you can buy the Intel 8265 from ebay for the best all round wireless card right now, they're a bit expensive but it's worth the price.

See gentech's video, nearing the end they show you where the wireless card is.

Thanks for that video, it was useful.I understand the wifi card is under hinge cover. I couldn't get one thing tough, in order to replace the wifi card, do I need full disassembly or just the hinge cover? It seemed pretty buried, the screw was visible but not the socket and the rest.

I think hinge cover first then you can remove everything.

Or it might be remove the bottom cover to access hinge cover screws, I really don't know.

@Kevin@GenTechPC - I think you better ask the person who made the video though ;)

While the GT80/83 screen is the same and it is not the best screen it in the market, it is far far away from being mediocre. It works, has good colors, excellent viewing angles, and can overclock most of the time to 100hz.

And while I do agree that the GT73 has an overall better screen offerings, I don't consider my GT80 a bad screen at all. I didn't have any problems with it while I owned my GT80. I simply have a better screen now, but I didn't complain before either.

And I agree that fast sync is great, provided you don't mind noise because you will run at max hardware haha. G-sync is a nice addition but I don't think it really is necessary. Sometimes I don't even see the benefit in particular games, and it has caused different issues that I didn't have before (fps issues).

How do you overclock the gt83vr? Every time I try to search for info all i find is reviews etc. I'd love to run the display at 100hz but don't know how.

I am disappointed with the screen not being 1440 or 4K because it has dual gtx1080s in it and I wanted to get everything out of them. I would use an external display but then what was the point of getting this machine. I'd give up the awesome keyboard.

    Any help would be appreciated.

@Sp00f if you go into Windows display properties and the NVidia control panel you can set a custom refresh in there. I can try to show you the panels when I get home for a better idea.

The desktop in my signature is connected to a G-Sync - 3D Vision monitor, an Asus ROG Swift PG278Q 144Hz 2560x1440 display, with G-Sync it isn't just tearing, it's input lag that is night and day better than v-sync.

Not only that, but this unit, at $4-5k, should come with a G-Sync AND 3D Vision capable 120Hz monitor. If this is 60 Hz I'm going to fall out of my chair LMFAO.

Back to the drawing board with this mediocrity MSI.

Everything else is fantastic, particularly the mechanical keyboard.

Hi, guys. I just bought a gt83vr 6re and would like to connect it to my receiver and have 5.1 audio. But I can't get anything else but stereo. I have connected using optical and hdmi, both get me stereo, no 5.1 option. Please, is there anybody that could help me with this?

Thanks in advance for any help given.

SPDIF/HDMI generally can only output stereo audio streams through Windows.

Yes, I did. I have an alienware m18x and have no issues with audio. But on this gt83vr there is not an option for more than stereo. Not even 2.1... Which is strange, as this laptop has a subwoofer. I can't find anywhere this config.

What happens when you connect your 5.1 system with optical cable(square TOSLINK cable), bring the receiver into optical connection mode (generally SPDIF mode) and select DTS like in screenshot and click that Test button? You don't hear seperate sounds from each speaker I presume? While in there please also test the Dolby Digital mode.

Intel cards are not the best out there, i used to use a TP-Link USB to wifi, the range on them is amazing, although it does have two aerials.
All depends if you want a basic adapter vs something better.

One of the major advantages of having a nice sampling of top USB Wifi and USB Cellular dongles is being able to put them at the end of a 3+ meter USB extension cable.

I can route the cable such that I can hang the transceiver up high above a work space and be able to move it around - towards / away from stations / windows / interference.

Using this method I've been able to work in many spaces others can't get usable signals with their laptop antenna / transceiver isolated by walls and shelves and obstructions at the same levels in all directions.

Plus, for a long time, even now for some, it's good to have a sampling of radio chipsets on hand when moving around at a client site. Offices, meeting rooms, floors, wings, buildings, DC's might all have different infrastructure, not to mention multiple client sites in a day.

Also, when running many different laptops, desktops, hardware that have USB ports that I can access vs. PCIe internal slots I can't access, having a selection of USB dongles provides the most flexibility no matter what I am trying to connect to and from.

This video is for the GT80, so somethings are different, but in similar places.

    I haven't seen a GT83 video for disassembly yet :)

What's wrong with your card? Did it die? Are you still within warranty you can get MSI to replace it. If it's a connectivity / compatibility issue, complain to MSI and ask for an alternative card.

If it's the standard 1535 problems, did you uninstall the Suite software and install the drivers only package? That works for most people.
    http://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/category/other-downloads

Or try the new Suite, and manually go through the Killer Settings, filling in the upload / download speed, it's easy to get it to work you just need to take the time to use it.
    http://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads

And, don't forget to download the BT software and install that as well :)

I hear in Windows 10 you can uninstall the Suite, reboot, and Windows 10 update will install compatible drivers that work for people that have done that - use Ethernet to download the update.

Plenty of people get the 1535 card working just fine, and it has better distance coverage than the 82xx series, what's the problem? What are you trying to connect to?

Many thanks for your detailed reply. I had a problem with the 1535 not seeing one of my routers from time to time and only cure was restart. Yesterday I uninstalled the killer suite and went with Win10 drivers and Today it was better. I'm still testing that.

Also, my bluetooth mouse (Logitech MX Master) lags from time to time. The cursor freezes for 1-2 seconds then it is good. I'm still trying to find if it is 1535s fault or Logitech. If it was easy to replace, I was ready to pay $15 for an Intel 8260 to see if it is any better.

Cool, hopefully that fixed it :)

If not, and you want to go through the trouble of replacing the Wifi card, be aware the little nub on the 1535 is very fragile, and is easy to break off when twisted, pull up at an angle that should pop it off with the least pressure side to side - it seems the solder is thin.

And, as long as you are going through all that disassembly trouble, you might as well get the newer Intel 8265 that is about $20-25. There have been reports of it working well.

I am sure you already did it, but you might look at the router web site for the latest release / beta firmware and see if that might help too. Using the automatic update on the router often doesn't see the latest versions as they are available to download directly via the support pages.

    Have fun :)

Hi guys I just got my MSI GT83VR for about 1 month. The first week it was working fine without any tweaks then problems came rolling in:

Here are the list of problems I ran into

    1. sometimes I cannot connect to wifi for no reason while other devices can connect properly (I had this fixed by following many youtube tutorials but I am not sure if it is the real fix and if the problem will come back again

    2. the 'Y' key on the keyboard tend to repeat itself for no reason, I had to disable 'repeating keys when holding' option to fix this, are there any other way?

    3. this one is the most frustrating one, my speakers suddenly became super fuzzy for no reason - i did not use it at full volume or whatsoever, tweaking with the driver seemed to have fixed the problem but made the sound quality terrible - I have to rush the volume up to almost max to hear anything remotely near to what it sounded in the first week

    Aside from all that..

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to have my laptop run the it should be? I bought it for it's monster specs and portability and right now it is failing me pretty much. What else do I have to do to have it running as intended?

I tried to read the thread but it is so long and I don't know what to search for, especially when I know almost nothing about computers.. going through this thread is almost like reading alien language for me. If anyone can relate or help, please help this poor guy out, I want to use this beast as it is intended to be.

    **edit**
PS. this is really a bummer, i've been lurking around since 2013 to purchase a giant MSI and once I purchase it I can't use it to the fullest.. probably because of my own naivety, please help.

Hey welcome to thread. With the network issue try running the bare killer networking drivers.

As for the Y key I'm not sure what's up. Maybe pull the key cap and take a peek? If I recall the housing is see through.

The sound issue I had for a bit before I reformatted my computer and reinstalled the bare drivers. Since then I haven't had any issues other than some software compatability things.

what do you mean by bare killer networking drivers and bare drivers for sound issue though? sorry for simple questions I really have no clue

also what else do I need to do to bring out the most out of this laptop without possibly damaging it?

plus how do you guys take care of the dust?

Hey sorry for the late reply, was at work.

If you Uninstall the drivers and re do them just use the basic drivers package and avoid the extra software like the killer networking suite. Or better yet when you update your nvidia avoid 3d vision lol.

I'm not sure about dust. I don't have a huge issue with it. I think it has a dust screen but I don't recall. It depends where you live, as you could just take off the panel and blow it out every now and then. Though be careful some countries you might not be able to do that.

we'll see if gt83vr is lucky enough to get the next refresh which is big. 6 core 14nm coffeelake CPU goes mainstream for desktop/laptop either Q3 2017 or Q4 2017.

I thought the first coffee lake chips where going to be low power processors until cannon lake.

no, what intel did is this, tick-tock-optimize however,

kabylake being the optimization of skylake, they are either having a hard time with 10nm yields or still have too much 14nm need to sell, which cannonlake was supposedly right after kabylake. due to what intel's *claims*, their 10nm low yield hence they need to provide it to ultrabook/tablet first (cause those sell in the largest volume and make the most money) and as for desktop/ mainstream to high end laptops, will get 2nd optimization phase called coffeelake.

so cannonlake/coffeelake will cost exist roughly around same period, but we get 14nm instead of 10nm and there are pretty much no architecture change. since cannonlake originally was meant for shrink for power saving, we won't even get that.

intels tick-tock-optimize now becomes tick - tock - optimize - optimize.

however knowing this would upset a lot of consumer, intel decided to *up* their core counts to mainstream 6 cores for consumers. so we will have ultrabook 10nm staying 2 cores, while mainstream moves from 2c/4c to 4c/6c that way people still has a reason to buy their old technology 14nm which is 3 years old since broadwell. also conveniently this will allow to let them compete with AMD's zen 6c/8c as mainstream.

at this point, let see if MSI is gonna refresh this, if they do then its excellent even given the soldered CPU. i havent heard much news about this laptop lately at all and i honestly think its dying. it'd be nice to get an option of zen 8 cores in this laptop LOL.

Question for all the GT83 guys. I've looked into the new kaby lake versions and it looks nice. But how are you all coping with the complete lack of multi GPU supported games ? Dx12 has been awful for sli. Are you playing with one 1080 idle most of the time? Help convince me it's worth it lol

I'm doing well, lol. A lot of older titles support sli so I have a bit of backlog to play through. Fallout 3/4 witcher 3, surprisingly minecraft. To name just the most recent.

And I'll admit dx12 has been a bit of a disappointment in its current releases. However Vulcan has been making its debut with a few games like the latest doom for example.
We will just have to wait for the industry to catch up and retool and tune for the new api. I remember Dx11 had some difficulties getting off the ground at first.

The one 1080 being idle isn't super bad. I can run 3440×1440 around 60fps@high or ultra.

Also how does the KB feel and is it zones or individual keys.
