Welcome to the GT80 owners club :)

G-sync is very nice from what I have heard but personally I have yet to experience it. I am not sure what are the requirements to make it work on the current model or if it will be implemented but it is not something I miss. You can always connect to an external monitor with gsync too :) or perhaps we will be able to upgrade the internal monitor later.

As for True color or nahimic I don't know but I thought nahimic was merely software, and I actually have installed. I have no clue regarding True Color though, not even sure what it does haha.

Yes, all titans have the same IPS 1080p panel, which is very good. I say you will be happy with it :)

GT72 is a great laptop and an amazing deal if you look for single powerful GPU. If you don't really care about dual GPU's, i say GT72 is the one to get :)

But I wanted maximum GPU power haha :p

Update on the battery issue - I did a battery recalibration but I have yet to test.

I will be without electronics for the next 6+ weeks so I will take a look at this again when I can.

I thank everyone for the help and advice.

4K is very demanding, but you should be able to drive some games in medium settings. I ran witcher 3 all maxed without hairworks at 30fps at 4K, so I imagine if you have a 4K monitor you can reduce settings to get 30fps or more :)

I can give you another example of a game at 4k, if it helps make your mind up whether to stick with it or cancel.

GTA connected to my 4k runs at 64fps when running around, and 78fps when stood still. I counted 5 of the graphics settings were on very high, and the other 5 were set to high, vsync turned off. and stuff like rendering distance is all turned up to their highest because it's a 40inch, (philips 60hz), people perhaps wouldn't want that distance stuff right up on a 30 inch sort of size 4k monitor because dpi may mean too small to see, so better performance could be had there

One thing though, all of those settings take around 6.5 - 7 gb of the card memory, so the ti you'd have to run even lower because it shouldn't really fit on the memory.

I'm also curious...think he may have mispoke. Wish MSI made a external GPU dock for the GT72/80 or something with a decent gpu. don't mind spending money on a gaming laptop but GPU upgrade cost on laptops are insane.

I just sent an AW17R2 back after some major throttling issues and now Im looking at the Titan GT80. I know that with the 4980HQ, the feeling was that throttling was going to limit the value of that upgrade over the 4720. But on the new Broadwell systems, I understand that they are running a bit cooler due to the smaller die size. Is the 5950HQ worth the price increase, or do we know yet?

How do you guys like the build quality on the machine? This would be my first MSI and I have never seen the GT 80 in person. I have owned a bunch of Alienware laptops, and currently am using a 3 year old Asus G75 with a 670MX so this should be a massive upgrade lol.

I am in a similar boat, Ive owned Alienware laptops before and am going back to laptops after having been on hiatus for a few years. Comparing the NP9377 against this but Liking what i see about the GT80 outside the lack of 120hz/gsync and possibly what upgrade cost will be next gen but this applies to both laptops. Guess i have grown use to spending a few hundred to upgrade my desktop sli vs 1K+ on top of the line laptops.

I hear you Governor. I would have to lean towards the GT80, as the Sager is a 980m but doesnt offer SLI 980's as far as I know. I do know that Eurocom makes a Clevo chassis machine called the Panther that offers a desktop CPU and SLI 980's but the build price is typically over 4k in that configuration.

Im basically at a crossroads as I don't currently have a desktop machine so the GT80 was very tempting. The other option is to build a new machine (which I admit does sound like a fun project...until I can't get it to post and then Ill kick myself.) With the new 6 core and 8 core Intel processors, its pretty easy to build a monster gaming machine.

Im leaning MSI Titan though ;)

Yea i know what you mean, while i do have a 5930K machine (with 1 980) i will be traveling allot then deploying once more soon so definitely need something to take with me. Sager does make an SLI notebook the 9377 ( Link). Wish MSI would announce how the upgrade program will work and maybe some sort of pricing but that is just really asking for something way to soon...like i said...I'm a cheap bastard.

You can see the prices from the GT72 upgrade program (from 880M to 980M) to get an idea of pricing.

    Hey guys (and gals)!
I am getting a yellow bang on my Intel Management Engine Interface (specifically a code 10). My sleep function also stopped working when the bang showed up. I have updated the MEI and chipset drivers, recovered the OS, re-flashed the BIOS, and tried to re-flash the MEI firmware (it did not work, said I am missing the MEI driver- due to the bang I suspect), but nothing has worked. Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

    Thanks in advance!
    :)

So how portable is it? Is it more meant to be left in a desk or is it easy to take from class to class every day?

I also wonder how loud the keyboard is, might be distracting in class. Fortunately my school days are behind me.

Official specs list 9.9lbs (4.5kg). That's weighty but not heavy imo, Def not a sit on your lap while you lay in bed kind of laptop i think lol.

I'd say it is indeed loud for class. You can definitely hear the typing. When I use it at home, my wife can easily tell I am using my laptop haha :p

I actually have used it as a sit on your lap while in bed, it works though not the most ergonomic of stances haha :) But definitely use it on a flat surface. Since the air intake is on the bottom, it is importat to leave that open for proper air flow.

If you are used to those heavy books you carry around between classes, then this will feel like another pair of books. Other than that, you might consider not lugging arounf the machine because dimensions are quite big, and you might bump the machine around :)

Imagine commuting in a 2015 Ferrari 458 and asking how reliable it is. Its a race car, not a Civic. Definitely some better machines to be had for school, many are ultrabooks with no moving parts that can be had for 600-700 bucks. This is a desktop replacement that can be transported frequently but likely wasnt meant to be a daily school machine.

I mean, it can withstand small bumps and stuff, but generally, notebooks are not designed for that (except a few). In the end it is up to you :) so it is nothing to worry about if you are careful with your machine :)

I only move mine mostly around my house and sometimes when I take it to friend's houses. Still in perfect condition :D

That's good to know they are both the same for 4th Gen users, won't feel robbed of a great a machine just because of the different CPU's :)

Previously I messed with a 4720hq on a asus 551jw, The only difference I noticed are that the intel graphics from my 5959HQ is better and slightly cooler. But then again different screens and hardware

You might want to look at the GS70 series for lightweight, portable machines. I wanted a GT80 but I travel a lot and weight was important.

Hello all, I just ordered the broadwell GT80-258 (970sli) from gentechpc. I got the 970's because I'd rather put that $500 I saved towards a face-melter desktop rig in 2016 when NvLink arrives.

I have read this entire thread and appreciate all the regular contributers. I plan on being an active member on this forum, seems like a good group of guys.

I'm also going to be really busy over the next few weeks, making this not the most ideal time to get this laptop. My question is, as soon as I get it, whats a short checklist of things I should do to ensure all the parts and configs are working? I will have maybe a few hours to boot it up and test everything out, I'm worried something will slip by the 14day window I have to check her out. (I paid for the 30day pixel warranty, and I got Ken to throw in the $15 dollar clean install for free.)

I will also post my benchmarks in GTVEVO's worthless thread when I get the chance ;)

Evo you should get them to comp you a 263 upgrade for all the machines your selling! Its a commission program right?

Wow they really like the machine. Think I'm gonna order one Monday. Now the question is 5700HQ or the 5950. Not sure if the faster cpu is worth the price. What do you guys think?

The MSI GT80 Titan Review: The Broadwell Gaming Laptop Your Desktop Envies

@Thrawn: Both processors serve the GT80 well, and it really boils down to individual preferences and budget. Myself, I usually spend the extra money to squeeze out the added Mhz., but this generally bumps up the CPU temps as well. In the case of the 4th Gen. Hazwell, the 4980HQ temps were a bit high for my liking, but in the case of Broadwell 5950HQ, I have no problem at all...... but Skylake is just around the corner. ;)

    :)
