I ran the test and it took about 37.7 seconds for Power Throttle Limit to start on my first run, and 33.3 Seconds on the second run.
The test was run with stock core settings

Ok this is pretty normal, what speeds did the cpu drop too? You should run it with your negative dynamic voltage offset and see if it will hold longer.

    at -75 I got 43.9 secs, at -90 I got 41.3 secs and at -.50 I got 36.6 seconds.

Speeds? where do I find that?

Your speeds will be quoted as the Processor frequency in the XTU log monitor. So far it seems that the 5th gen acts the same with TDP and Power throttling.

They will all power throttle under heavy loads, 47W is simply not enough to fully load the processor over an extended period.

Ok. I will run the test again tonight, with different voltages and less apps running in the background.

If it's lit, then it's on Discrete GPU mode.
If it's off, then it's on Optimus mode, which sets Intel HD graphics as default, and Nvidia GPU as secondary which becomes activated when being requested by 3D applications such as games.

Will the new eye tracking tech featured at computex be in the next GT80? Also does anyone know if the next model might get a multicolor keyboard? Does the current keyboard look pink in the light?

I can tell you that the keyboard doesn't look pink at all, as for multicolored who knows I guess its possible but I believe the color was decided upon steelseries. As for the next GT80 I would say we will have to wait until end of 2015 to beginning of 2016 before I expect another change, just my 02. I hope we see some good stuff by then though because I am ready and don't think I can justify moving from the 009 to the 263.

Multi coloured requires more LEDs and the larger caps require larger LEDs to light up (individually) so it's a lot more expensive.

Can I uninstall MSI SCM? It looks worthless. What is the purpose, if I am missing it?

It manages the GUI of the hot keys on the system, so without it there won't be any notification on the screen. It also manages user-defined hotkey functions, without it the special hotkey will not work.

Does this include the function key combinations?

If not, I am uninstalling. I don't ever intend to create my own hotkeys with that.

It is possible, however it's best to ask MSI Geno directly since it's not a released feature, but I am afraid this may be a NDA info.

For Function key, only its graphical icons will not popup when SCM is disabled, function-wise will remain.
For user-defined (customized shortcut launch function), it will be disabled since it relies on SCM to perform the function.

Hey guys. I noticed a problem on my GT80 when I tried watching DVDs over the weekend. When you rest the unit on your lap, it makes a very loud noise, almost like the disk is about to break. You can't hear anything aside from the disk spinning. If you do the same on a steady surface, only the normal sound is present.

Has anyone else experienced this? I know this is a desktop replacement, but watching DVDs in bed is the rare occasion I'd like this machine to be a functional laptop...

The drive is described as HL-DT-ST BD-RE_BU20N in Device Manager.

I had the same issue, to include not being able to load my DVD game disks. I had to put a RMA in to get a new Disk Drive. I got impatient however, and ordered a Panasonic Blu-Ray disk player to replace the one included in the GT80. By the way, do you notice how hot the drive (and the disks in it) get? Mine gets smoking hot.

When I get my gt80 where would you recommend I buy it from? Gentech? Xotic? Also how do warrantees work if I buy additional warrantees? What's with the no dead pixel thingy? Also is it worth it to select the add additional heatsinks option? I also did not see a raid 3 option and the ssd upgrades on xotic pc's site looked pricey..... I won't be buying for a while but i figured I might as well ask.

You can try uninstalling it and using it, though I don't see why you would uninstall it. I have it running, never showing anything, and never opening up. What bothers you about it? The impact on the system is close to 0.

Honestly I would see if any of the resale vendors are close too you since it sounds like you haven't worked with one before. The advantage they can provide will be support and personal attention which is why they are successful in most cases. Otherwise if none are you can simply use a vendor like Newegg or Amazon in many cases, it really just depends on the type of person you are and what you feel comfortable with but opinions will vary. There are a few on here which seem to do very well so check them out as you have been.

Warranties can vary depending on which you select. A standard extended warranty just adds more time to the covered parts. Other options may include additional coverage. Best to contact resellers directly to see what their extended warranty will cover. For the no dead pixel thingy :), most brands will require a certain amount of pixels before they will cover it under warranty. Anything less is considered normal and within tolerance. MSI's policy is pretty standard, they require 7 total dead pixels or 3 within a 15mm circle. Getting the 0 dead pixel guarantee will cover you even if you get 1.
Super RAID 3 is what MSI call's their RAID 0 set up across multiple SSD's, its the same performance.

Additional warranty covers all manufacturer defects except physical damage. No dead pixels warranty covers any dead or stuck pixels. The RAID in the BIOS only supports Strike and Recovery mode.

I am scoping out this laptop. I have a couple questions.

    1. is the keyboard full NKRO?

    2. Is the monitor capable of 120hz?

    3. Is the monitor lightboost or strobe capable for fast action FPS?

    4. The configurations that MSI sells do not work great for me. I personally hate SLI due to microstudder and general compatibility issues and would rather have the fastest single GPU solution. There are also a pile of less than optimal drives in them I really have no use for since I have better SSDs in my current laptop. Are there people selling custom versions of this notebook?

    5. A related question is if I cannot find a good price on a custom solution is there the capability of removing 1 of the 980s and selling it and if so does anyone know roughly what the market price for such a card is or if anyone would even be able to use it?

Hi all! I am new here!

I got my MSI GT80 back in March - but I have been having a problem lately.

I recently upgraded to windows 8.1 64, and I just noticed that my webcam is no longer recognized on my machine.

There is an error in the device manager, where it says 'Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)' - I do not know if this is related or not.

Does anyone know what I can do? MSI doesnt really provide that many drivers that I may need in the event of a restore?

    Thanks!

    -Barry

So they sent you a replacement model in the end? Was hoping it wouldn't come to that, especially with the cost shipping and the time without it.

I didn't keep the disks in the drive long enough to notice a heat buildup. This is actually my first venture back into pc gaming in about ten years, so I was quite surprised to see I could play the games without their disks. I installed Alan Wake and Tomb Raider without the noise issue and play both offline with Steam. It was only when I put the unit on my lap that the disk noise started kicking off...

MSI let me take the drive out on my own, and gave me an RMA number to send it in for a replacement. They said when they got the defective drive from me (my cost shipping to them), the would send me a replacement drive (their cost shipping). After I took the BLU-Ray Drive out, I decided to just replace it with a more sturdy drive. I had Amazon overnight me a new drive. I took the bezel off the old drive (be careful, those locking tabs are fragile!) and placed it on the new drive. I placed it in the enclosure (it fit perfectly). The new drive works like a charm (Panasonic UJ262).

Someone considering the update to Windows 10 as soon as it is launched on July 28th? I am curious to see how DirectX 12 will affect system's performance for games. What major concerns should I have when updating Windows in MSI GT80 SLI-001? Any expected driver conflicts? I appreciate feedback on this ;)

There will be an option to add ram but it will likely give a fairly decent negative performance impact.

The 263 with the 5950hq would be compared to the 009 4th Gen with 4980. So the 001 with the 4720hq would match with the gt80 253 with the 5th Gen 5700hq. So no jump in price between 4th an 5th Gen cpu models really and honestly what to choose just depends upon the person but both processors have the same tdp wattage. The 5950 or 4980 can just deliver a bit more in short bursts and have better internal graphics when not using the big gpus (really a mood point), you won't be disappointed with any of the 4 models.
