I'm trying to overclock the CPU and when I add some to the 'reference clock' in XTU my laptop freezes and restarts. Am I changing the wrong setting? At first I tried adding +200mhz but when it hung and rebooted I decided to go with only +20mhz and it still hung, even without any undervolting.

Yes the bios is locked so you can only change the multipliers in some cases under the core control of xtu. You will see them for 4 cores, 3 cores, 2 cores, and 1 core usually at the bottom of the options.

I had this same issue and ended up resource some from an old recycled laptop, MSI tried to send me some but I ended up with 2 different ones when they arrived. The screws are free but they will charge you a premium to ship them.

This is a bit embarassing, but I managed to delete the raid 0 partition for the gt80 Titan during an Ubuntu server install. I assume everything is lost, but is there a way to restore the machine to factory default?

Try holding f3 at boot, there is a short cut key and its one of the f keys as I had to restore from a failed ssd. The restore partition is on the 1tb hd.

Ya I'm boned. Blew away the TB partition thinking it was a failed grub install. Well looks like I'm going to call MSI and see if they have a recovery disc or USB I can buy.

Hey GTVEVO, if I'm not mistaken, didn't you use the backup images from the MSI recovery tool to fix an issue? Did you just create a bootable flash using the first image?

hello guys, new to the club and just purchased my 2QE. over the moon with it but seem to be running in to problems trying to run GTA5 on this beast. seem that I can only get the game to run on the lowest quality settings and every time I try and up them the game just hangs on me. anybody else had this issue because i've searched and cant seem to find anything. i've updated drivers, but nothing seems to stop the crashing. thanks in advance.

Actually I found the backup images I saved off when I first bought the laptop, but thank you.

But I am concerned, the DVD recovery with the image appears to only allow restoration to one of the two 128GB drives. Doesn't this mean the raid will be destroyed?

Right, if you configure the raid through the bios menus u will be able to recover to that logical disk the raid created. Otherwise with no raid configured it will try to restore to a single ssd.

Indeed, you can only restore to a single volume, but raid combines the two drives into a single volume.

About how long is the battery life? Is there any noticeable detriment to performance or cooling when not plugged in?

About 2 to 3 hour on IGP. This notebook (or any gaming notebook for that matter) is not your best choice if mobility is most important to you. Unplugged, performance will be fine on the IGP, but do not expect optimum performance when using the dedicated graphics cards. If you want to game, it's best doing so when plugged-in.

One of my biggest worries with buying one is its irreplaceable battery... Is this estimate for when it is on power saver mode with processor limits? Also when sli is off are you able to access single gpu?

Hey GT80 Owners how ya been?

    I havaen't posted in a while.

Well since last I was here I posted that I purchased a GT80 and unfortunately newegg.com cancelled my order for some verification issues, even though I used newegg preferred account to pay for the machine. So i bought a ASUS GL551 instead, which wasn't good enough for me to keep and I need a machine while my bank approved my credit line increase.

So once I got my line increased, I purchased the GT80 SLi263 from ExcaliberPC yesterday and they had a $50 discount, as well as overnight saturday delivery option. I couldn't go a day without playing so after I dropped off the Asus at a UPS dropbox I placed my order on Friday morning and I just received my GT80 4 hours ago, before 12pm as promised by FedEx.

I am amazed at this great machine.
I had a minor MSI true color app issue that I resolved on my own, I popped in my Mushkin Reactor 1TB SSD with all my games loaded and ready to play.

The estimate I gave is using the notebook on IGP, and if need be, the battery can be replaced. When using the dedicated graphics, you can select a single GPU, or SLI configuration, from within the NV Control Panel..... but even such, you will still want to use dedicated graphics while plugged-in. The 980M's pull a lot of power, and if unplugged, you can expect greatly diminished battery life, and poor gaming frame rates.

    :)

I got a question. I just ran a SSd benchmark and my mushkin only ran at half its normal speed due to the HDD slot on my machine is Sata 2 port

Is there anyway around this issue to regain my SDD speeds?

Right there isn't enough supported lanes with the cpu for sata3 on the hdd slot, you are still seeing much faster than normal hd speeds but all the msata drives are sata3.

I just ran 3D Mark 11 demo test on 720p

Here are my results after I exited Dragon Gaming Center

    http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/9931730

I think the results are good but could be better. Any opinions? or helpful tips on improvement?

I am fairly new to the gaming and I want to get my moneys worth on my new machine

There will always be new tech on the horizon, it does not make yours any slower than it is though and with some tweaking you should get loads of speed.

More data needs to come in, but from benchmarks I've seen, it appears the 5950HQ is about 8 to 10 degrees C cooler, under full load. On average, high temps for the 4980HQ seems to be in the low to mid 90's C, and for the 5950HQ, the low to mid 80's C.

And to just think a while back you thought the thread was worthless. no worries but I had to say it.

I really wished I could get ahold of a 5950 and put it through the paces with some liquid ultra.

LOL! GTVEVO, I like you, and I think you can be genuinely helpful, but it appears you have a bone to pick. Are you trying to take a poke at me? Because, I can poke back.... you had to say it, now I have to say it. LOL! :D

1.) This is the GT80 Owner's Lounge, which I do not recall ever saying was 'worthless'.
2.) When citing me, please 'Quote' me completely, and precisely.
3.) By 'thread', I assume you are referring to the 'GT80 3DMark Scores Test and Tune' thread, to wit, I am not sure 'worthless' is how I put it, and I believe I had much more to say..... like, questioning the thread's data, because without credible testing standards and methodology, data can easily become skewed,, either wittingly, or unwittingly. (garbage in, garbage out)
4.) What makes you think this thread is my only source of information?
5.) It appears 'worthless' is all you gleaned from my earlier comments. This was not my intention, and the comments were not a personal assault on your thread. I was simply pointing out a need for standardized testing methods, from credible sources. I assumed you would be onboard with this...... My Bad! Please have fun and enjoy the thread.
6.) As pointed out in post #1926 above, more data is needed regarding the 5950HQ high-temps. I expect credible data is forthcoming soon.

Anyhow, I hope this brings understanding, and we can finally move forward.

    :)

    Hi all,

Just moved into a new place and don't unfortunately have the space for a full desktop and monitor anymore. Been looking into one of these due to the spec and mechanical keyboard. My only concern is I play CS:GO and am used to playing on a 144hz monitor. Now I know the laptop doesn't have gsync and it's a standard 60hz screen. Can anyone confirm if they have tried forcing the laptop screen to go beyond 60hz and have been successful. To anyone who thinks playing on 60hz or 100+ doesn't make any difference, I really urge you to set them up side by side and try for yourself.

    Thank you.

    Problem:
When running starcraft II, the "suggested" options are listed as the mediums, some as lows. Clearly not the performance this laptop should yield. I can override those settings, of course, but it leads me to think that SCII is not fully utilizing the laptop's capabilities.

Is there any way to verify this? Dragon gaming center is on high performance + sport.

What methods should we use to preserve the battery longevity of this laptop? I know you're supposed to unplug it once it reaches full, but you can't really game unless its plugged it.

Maybe disconnect the battery internally and just play on AC power? Other suggestions?

The system already will try to preserve the batt on its own. You will start to notice that once charged it will not attempt to charge any longer unless it falls below 90%. MSI already has us covered.

At this time Intel is not producing mobile extreme socket models any longer that I am aware of and to fit a desktop cpu into another laptop brings on many challenges due to power and thicknes. I admit if they could they would attract several people.

I actually read about that earlier in the thread, and I've monitored it. It stays at 100% for me, contrary to what I have read here. Do I have a setting awry somewhere? What software manages this?

When I first plugged in my Titan it charged up to 94%, plugged in and stop charging any more.
Now it is fully charged at 100% and plugged in

in the case of the gt80, the laptop starts charging the battery when it drops below 90% and stops at 100%.
when it reached 100%, it internally disconnects the battery and only runs on ac power. if you unplug it and let it run on battery down to (for example) 95% and reconnect, it still will keep the battery internally unplugged until it falls down below 90%. this is to prolong the batterys longevity due to not topping it off that often.
a battery that is neither used nor charged is the happiest battery ;-)

cheaper laptops usually (used to) start recharging at 96%.

Can anyone with a GT80-263 run the XTU (Intel Extreme Tuning utility) stress test and tell us how long the 5950HQ will hold its full clock speed of 3.7ghz on all 4 cores?

In xtu you will just monitor processor frequency, thermal throttling, power limit throttling, current limit throttling. Then run a cpu stress test starting at 5 min and watch the count down time and jus calc how long it takes for the Power limit throttle to start.

I will cross my fingers that it doesn't start at all as my wallet is screaming lol.
