Sure come join us! Yes the GT80 GPU cards can be upgraded. In all honesty I would spend a couple hundred more and grab the 071 or 258 model with 970s in sli. Resale of the cards will be easier and you will get more performance longer and the benefits of more vram.

I would spend the money now because jumping to higher models is always much cheaper than purchasing cards, just my nickel of advice.

I'm experiencing less than ideal gaming (and non-gaming) performance. To give you a feel of the performance difference, Firestrike 1.1 only gives a score of around 10.4K in contrast to around 13.2K when I initially got the laptop. The max CPU temp on my GT80 doesn't go over 65-70C. I hope the sensor isn't broken, but assuming the sensor is alright, it seems that for some reason the CPU isn't clocking up? How can I check that? I ran stress tests, etc using the Intel XTU and everything seemed OK.

I admit I played with the power options a few days back. I've since reverted everything to "High Performance". Before doing that, the firestrike scores were even lower.

Has anyone ever experienced this kind of a problem? Any suggestions for how I should go about addressing this? Thanks!

I would install xtu and look the cpu clocks and run a stress test to see what cpu clocks are being reached. Start there and then you will see if your drop is cpu related or not, if not move on to GPU testing and monitor clocks during a benchmark with afterburner or similar tool. Review one piece at a time until something sticks out.

I did the stress test and it shows the recent average CPU frequency as 2.59GHz.

Ya there is the issue, what temps are being reached at that speed through xtu? Seems related to power settings if they are safe. Make sure inside the power profile the max cpu performance is 100% when plugged in.

I did a 5 minute stress test and the maximum temperature reached during the test is 68C. Where should I look for CPU performance? I checked Change Advanced Power Settings and over there I've already set Maximum Processor State to 100%. Is that what you're referring to?

Yes that was it but since you said you was tinkering with the settings it really seems some trickery has occurred. I would start uninstally software like the dragon gaming Center and rebuilding the power profiles. Just explore all software avenues before leaning to hardware.

Thanks, GTVEVO! Got it back to how it was before. :) Wow, the Power Options and the Dragon Gaming Center, can together HALVE the laptop performance - or may be even worse ;). Setting power settings back to "High Performance" and selecting "Sport Mode" in the gaming center made my laptop get back to where it was.

I'm sure they were set like this before. I think when I was tinkering - although I never explicitly altered these settings - they might have got changed.

    Thanks anyways! :)

GTEVO, when you say uninstall Dragon Gaming Center, did you mean to leave it off? I've been wondering about this program and whether i should leave it on, but I wouldn't know how to switch between 'comfort' and 'sport' modes. I currently use MSI Afterburner to monitor the temps and CPU & GPU usage. Thanks in advance for your help.

I was only suggesting to remove it for troubleshooting. If you remove the application the gpus should run at their intended speed and voltage without the software trying to override their default values.

I would say that you could leave it off and some have but its not a must so really it's up to the owner. I just wanted to be sure it wasn't causing some sort of confusion for the owner and or the system power profiles.

Hey guys, I'm planning on getting the 980m SLI version of the GT80 soon and will be doing alot of 3d rendering and gaming on it, I'm planning to use it as both a workstation and a gaming laptop since I'm gonna be moving around very often. I've been hearing alot about how the CPU runs kind of hot on the GT80 which concerns me especially since I'll be doing alot of rendering, but now that XoticPC has the 5th gen CPU ( i7- 5700HQ) do you think it will run at a lower temp? I cant seem to find any benchmarks so I cant tell. Also this is the first post I've done so I'm still new to this forum thing, so if I'm doing anything wrong please tell me.

    Hello All,

Got the laptop setup today and ran a couple initial benchmarks.

First firestrike benchmark I ran scored 14117 but pushed my CPU temps up around 95/96.

For the second benchmark, I had turned high performance off in the dragon gaming center: http://i.imgur.com/HTJmkWN.png

Score dropped a little bit but the temps (and noise level) are much reduced. I may just uninstall the dragon gaming center altogether.

So far I'm very happy with my purchase. Loving this keyboard too.

Let me know what else you'd like to see and I'll see what I can do.

It should work. Speed and voltage are the main thing to match, but you seem to have gotten the closest thing to your installed RAM.

Temps should run similar, to lower. I wouldn't worry about it, since even if temps do run on the hot side, it hasn't diminished performance. Though since all resellers now handle the newer versions, that is what you should definitely go for. No use trying to find a haswell machine :)

What were you trying to do? Under windows, if you press the GPU button, it should prompt a new window that tells you it will restart the computer. If nothing happens... do you have MSI software installed? Like System control manager SCM?

Thanks @ryzeki I always connect to external monitor, might be that is the reason it was not giving me the option to move from GPU display to Intel Display. But as soon as I unplugged the external monitor display and then pressed the GPU button and boom, it showed the popup window asking to restart, so all good now. Two more qs -
    1. Is there any way to permanently turn off the keyboard back-light (Fn+Pgup/pgdown)even after system reboot?
    2. What is the keyboard shortcut to change the shift mode (Sport to Comfort/Green)?

Submit your score to see how you compare to others in performance and temps, you would be the very first SLI-263 model, thanks!

Yes, the reason it does not allow you to use the intel GPU when connected external, is because every video output is routed directly to the dedicated GPUs. If this were not the case, we would be very limited in performance, plus unable to use surround, high refresh rate monitors, gsync etc. The intel GPU only works when using only the internal display :)

    1. Physically yes, but it involves cutting the power to the keyboard :D Is it always ON when you turn it on? Personally I use it ON all the time at the lowest brightness so I never realized it might always turn on with the power button. I'm sure that at the very least, you can create a bat file to auto turn it off as soon as you log on to windows :)

    2. I don't know, I never change from sport mode so I wouldn't know, sorry. Check the keyboard for FN+ something that looks like a car SHIFT.

Yeah, you won't regret it :) Performance is excellent!

Plus, I am sure the 5th gen intel CPUs can be tweaked more with intel XTU, so you have higher theoretical performance anyways :D

I don't see an option anywhere to submit. Maybe because the CPU isn't recognized?

Congratulations on your purchase of GT80.
Make sure to register your PC if you had bought it in the states within 30 days to receive ADC (accidental coverage).
Also, don't forget to create recovery discs using MSI burnrecovery in case you want to load/reload your own OS.

well for those who actually purchased this machine with haswell, a nearly 2 year old architecture when this laptop is released, there is now broadwell CPU but too bad cause HQ cpus are soldered, there are no upgrades LOL unless you swap the entire mobo, or buy a new machine.

its pretty sad to see a good design machine go to waste with a cpu like that, plus that 4.0+ ghz is only temporary due to it's tdp and design, intel seriously what a big joke.

What I think is funny is that you feel you are spitting out information that is actually useful to us. The CPU ends in HQ so it's no suprise to any true enthusiast . All in all you sound like many other followers and don't look at the over performance value.

My GT80 is the 6th person on the top list for 980m so I don't think anyone can really complain and neither can I when its really a gaming laptop and only uses one power brick.

With the G-Sync GT72 coming out in a matter of weeks, the G-Sync GT80 will likely not be too far along afterward.
That'll probably be a more significant upgrade to the system than processor improvements.
Still..not a good reason for us initial purchasers of the original to cry about.
By the time i buy my next MSI GT80 equivalent in two years, i expect a LOT will have changed and improved.

It's just the way the game is played

So I finally got my new Titan in today however the performance seems to be much lower then expected. Just wondering if there is anything I am missing. I set the shift mode to sport and enabled high performance but I am getting 12k in 3dmark firestrike with sli enabled. Something is definitely not right. Temps are completely fine gpus never hit 70c seem to be in the mid 60's and cpu never exceeds 80c. Only thing I changed out of the box was install new drivers from nvidia.

    This is my 3dmark result.

The only thing I can notice from your score is your graphic card core clock seems low but to be sure I would run msi afterburner behind the scenes and log the runs to see what clocks your GPU and CPU is reaching.

It might be as simple as running a clean Nvidia driver install instead of an upgrade install if the GPU cards are not clocking up to the boost clock speeds.

Yeah I've experienced how iffy upgrading nvidia drivers could be when it comes to not doing a clean install on desktops. I'll go ahead and try that now if that doesn't solve it I'll check out msi afterburner and see what it shows. Thanks for the quick reply.

Hello all, just a heads up, I undervolted my 5950HQ by -75mv and was able to turn high performance mode back on in dragon gaming center. The result was the highest score I've gotten yet, and crazy low termpatures. Didn't even get to 80c.

I'll be posting a screenshot of all the info later (I'm at work at).

I plan to fool around with it more this weekend to see just how far I can push the undervolting/overclocking while keeping it stable.

Well here is my score after doing a clean install of new drivers.

    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/5059567

Still around 1000k difference in the graphics score vs other stock clocks. MSI afterburner is showing that the gpu is boosting and stable so I have no idea what else it could be. GPU temps hit 70s this time around but I think thats still fine for laptop gpus. Any ideas guys? Or is this a normal score?

Any idea on when will MSI release the new version of GT80? I still can't decide if I should get the GT80 with the 5th gen cpu or just wait for the new version (skylake, new NVidia gpu).

Yes that is very odd as the physics score looks great for 3.7ghz with that 5th gen so the power is there to support those cards. I am assuming you are running with maximum performance in the nvidia control panel and windows power profile too so I am stumped without some serious logging and compare.
Have you looked to see how many unlocked bins show up in XTU?

I cant say I am quite sure what you mean by that as I have never used XTU before. Based on the recommendations here all I did was add -20 mv to my processor and kept it that way. If the bins are the multipliers on the cores I have 4.

Anyways I just ended up not caring anymore, bumped my GPU clock by 100mhz and my memory by 100 as well, ended up achieving this score.

    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/5059954

Its definitely not a power or heat issue otherwise I wouldn't have been able to keep my card juiced up that high. Quick question though, how far is too far when it comes to temps for the 980ms? Is 80c fine or is that pushing it? and I am talking MAX 80c-82c under a heavy gaming load (IE the witcher 3, no other game brings it to those temps not even 3dmark).

The 980m will start to throttle at 92C so I would say 85c or less is good and safe.

With the mobile i7 integrated gpu usually u can run -60 or so mv on the core pretty safely and further reduce those temps too. The 5th Gen cpu is rated at 105c so u are looking great there so no worries that I see with it. Just monitor you max from time to time for reassurance.

Thanks for the update, I tried -75mv first run in 3dmark and physics and combined score dropped drastically so I increased it to -20mv. I'll try again and see where the sweet spot lands.

Not all CPUs behave the same or can hold the same performance at any given voltage. Definitely experiment with different voltage values to get the best at the lower temp.

Thanks for sharing that point, really appreciate it. Can you also give us the details of the Active core clock Multipliers for 4,3,2,1 in XTU so we can determine the real speeds of the 5950HQ?

there prob wont be another gt80 in 2 years depending on the sales, since msi only promised 2 generation gpu change means in 2 years those GPU might not work anymore either due to socket change or bio limitation =/ after having a taste of xm cpu can't really accept anything on the lower end its hard to go back.

Its great that you are a big XM supporter, I owned one too and it didn't stand up and deliver for its price point in my experience but this is expected. I guess what I am trying to say is that some of us have worked with the XM series and very high priced Alienware machines that just didn't live up to the hype as their old predecessors did which is sad because they could have been great. Thats the past because today MSI has stepped in and built a great mobile gaming laptop where no other company has and with options no other company has even attempted and then to promise 2 gpu generations of upgrade is really icing on the cake. With the industry changing its simply not smart on their part to promise more when many of these variables are completely out of their control so I feel really grateful for what they did promise and I am sure others do also.

For those that purchased the last generation AW18 they got nothing, not even proper bios support with the current machine and certainly not a GPU upgrade compatibility.

It doesn't matter if it's socketed or not, the important thing is the existence of unlocked processors. Intel is at fault for not producing any other unlocked processor for haswell.

GT80 so far has been succesful so I do believe we will be seeing it more, but as an evolution, because both CPU and GPU tech will drastically change, with the introduction of different I/O ports for GPUs etc.

I am trying to install additional SSDs but I am upset to see no screws preinstalled for the SSDs. And of course the SSDs I purchased have no screws. Anyone know where to get screws to secure my SSDs
