After getting this machine, what changes/mods would you folks recommend that dont void the warranty and dont greatly reduce the lifespan below say 4 years?
i saw discussion on undervolting the cpu using intel xtu between 75 and 90mv. Im personally leaning towards 50mv for stability and less risk.
Anything else?
Also, my gt70 died (overheated and short circuited during a game according to repair shop) and i was wondering if i could add the ssd and ram sticks into the gt80? It was a stock gt70 0ne281us model

someone a few pages back said something about a 400pt difference in firestrike or so between 2 reviews of different models -
Thanks in advance! -

There is a video review from New Zealand (I believe Tech Radar) where he gives benchmarks on the 009 model but I don't believe he was running the same benchmarks as the folks at Gentech and Xoticpc (or at least I could not track them) -
You will find performance difference even among identical machines.

For those few owners out there so far, did you get a Blu-Ray burner as an option? And if so, what manufacturer/model is it?
The reason I ask is I'm just deciding on whether or not to take the burner or save about 60 bucks by just getting a BD reader.
Now, I do have cause to want a BD burner, but would want to burn BD-XL, if anything. So I wonder if the drive that comes with the MSI would be capable of that. -
(Apologies, this is a copy + paste from OMG: MSI is coming with a GTX 980M SLI notebook!!!, looking forward to its arrival.)
It's done. After much umming and arring I've ordered the Titan from HIDevolution. They've promised me it will be here (UK) by Friday. I've paid $3,440.04 including shipping, it works out at around £2500. This is inclusive of VAT and all other costs, I've been assured after talking to Angel, then Ted, that this is the final price inclusive of VAT and any customs dues. I spent most of the afternoon phoning around various MSI retailers in the UK, none of which could give me a date of release in the UK or a price. I then phoned MSI UK and spoke to a very helpful chap in the marketing and sales division who informed me it would be released over here in very limited quantites in the first week of Febuary for £3500, or $5290.43 at todays exchange rate! Needless to say until I saw the HIDevolution offer on amazon I wasn't purchasing.
I've read mixed reviews about HID on here so I'll post and let you know how the process goes, should be here by Thursday or Friday at the latest, fingers crossed! -

Still waiting on benchmarks from overseas on the 4980hq. One reason I wished this machine had a non-soldered chip like the i7-4910 is the 4980hq still has 6mb of L3 cache like the 4720hq. Also, with a machine this big, I cannot think of a time where I will not be plugged in and using the Iris pro rather than the 980m sli setup. -
-
I've got one and regret now. All my backups go to HDDs -- it's much faster and don't need several volumes.
I will probably get an optical drive bay HDD caddy instead because I only need to use optical disks in rare occasions. -
Can you confirm if with the GT80 keyboard there's no need for keyboards with different language layouts?
If I buy a GT80 with AZERTY or QWERTZ keyboard all I need to do is change the keyboard layout in Windows control panel and then replace the key caps? -
Here are some benefits of the 4980HQ against the 4720HQ:
-32% higher on 8-threads "CPU Mark"[1] (10060/7639)
-27% higher on single thread "CPU Mark"[1] (2248/1771)
-115% higher on 3DMark 11 GPU[2] (1957/910.5)
-71% higher FPS on Unigine Heaven 2.1[2] (26.1/15.3)
-3 times more overclock on Intel XTU (600MHz/200MHz)
-Intel vPro Technology
-Intel Trusted Execution Technology
NOTES:
-Same TDP 47W
-$245 more expensive

But is the cpu or the gpu limiting?
if the gpu is limiting, in a way it doesnt matter how fast the cpu is -
-
-
Considering what's going on with similar systems and that a double 980M SLI is even faster I do believe the 4720HQ will lag the system in some games, such as Battlefield 4.
Perhaps it's not even noticeable because the cooling system seems to be strong enough to avoid the thermal throttling issue.
Also, the difference in extremely high FPS passes undetected to eyes like mine: from 120 to 110 it's pretty much the same to me.
The problem is the CPU is not upgradeable. 3 years from now the 4720HQ will be even more bottlenecked by the most demanding games with ultra settings of the future.
It's just speculation at this point but I do believe we might get better results with an extra $250 investment on the core of the system.
Time will tell. -

You can't really use a model with CPU thermal throttle against this one with propper CPU cooling.

GEE WIZ..... this notebook has barely hit the market, and already, a hysteria about bottlenecks and throttling..... and thus far, I haven't received information or reports of either being a problem in the GT80 Titan. LOL, I am surprised the topic of 'GPU stuttering' hasn't entered into the fray.
Anyhow, everything I have heard from the professional community has been positive, and I look forward to testing this awesome notebook. Hopefully, my GT80 Titan SLI-009 will be arriving sometime this week, so stay-tuned!

This notebook is really brilliant and everything works as advertised unlike some other experiences I have had and spent more money with those. I really can't say anything bad about it except the numpad integration but it's innovative so I didn't expect it to be perfect either and didn't care since I will use it rarely.

Mine has been puched back to a delivery date of the 27th. Not a big thing, I believe she's worth the wait.
Still be interested to see if it's going to have 32gb of ram as advertised around here or if it's going to have 24gb of ram as advertised over seas. -
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Mine will have 32GB DDR3, and a SuperRAID 3 configuration, but the -009 will come with 24GB ram, standard.

Was anyone able to run GT80 on external 2560x1600 Monitor running World of Warcraft on Ultra settings? I would really like this test before pulling the trigger.
Moreover are the heatsinks upgrade offered by XoticPC offer a substantial upgrade over the current heatsink in GT80?
Regarding the SSD configuration, are only the 4 mSATA make use of the SATA III ? So for example if I opt for a Samsung 850 PRO 512GB (2.5) it will be hooked to SATA II? If so it will be bottlenecking the Samsung 850 PRO as it is rated above 500 MB/S for both Read/Write? -
Definitely still worth putting in a SSD in the slot, but probably best to emphasize one with good random read/write capabilities. -

Being that you have 4 M2 slots I would definitely put SSD in those slots (and most probably RAID0 them) and use that 2.5" for my mass storage.
That was the idea, but granted SSD are large enough in capacity and cheap enough to make replacing mechanical mass storage a valid concept. -
Just discovered your channel on youtube, nice nice -

What about Gaming performance on Ultra Settings using external Monitor? One with 2560x1600 resolution or similar?
-
Official overclocking via XTU with the 4980 allows 6 multipliers to each stock setting
1 = 46, 2 = 45, 3 = 44, 4 = 44
Stock Fire Strike score 13727, the physics due to CPU was the uplift in the score mainly so you see only about a 4% difference is a full test between the two processors. -
As you start using the machine let us know if you see any incidence of throttling (which given the cooling solution I doubt, but would be good to know especially once you start overclocking).
Thanks again for keeping us up to date! I always figure the more information the better for potential purchasers.
Also, I have been having a hard time finding places to buy m.2 drives as it seems most of the models are OEM only. Where is a good place to buy those after market? -
GT80 arrived today. Wow.
I'll post a more in depth reply tomorrow as I've installed Dragon Age Inquisition and maxed out all the settings and it looks phenomenal. Cut scenes look like the frame rate is dropping below 30 however the game play itself is smooth as silk. The fans are incredibly noisy at full speed however the temperature of the air coming out of the fans dropped considerably once I put them on full pelt (not scientific I know, apologies). Played ride of the Valkyries (lots of bass) compared it to my Samsung Gamer 7, louder but no real difference in audio quality, a little tinny at times. Touchpad combined with Windows 8 is a pain in the . HIDevolution had had the laptop from California to my house in just over 48 hours, so far everything looking good, very impressed. In daylight screen seems to fade at the edges. Blue-ray player is very loud and makes the whole laptop vibrate when writing, not sure if that's a problem or not anyone in the know let me know. I know more than Joe Public about computers though a hell of a lot less than many on these forums, I'll give a full review to the best of my ability tomorrow now back to Dragon Age with headphones I think... -
FYI amazon and newegg usually carries the m.2 ssd 80mm drives.
-
Run the video for at least 10 minutes of gameplay. My guess is if the TDP is locked it won't go beyond 4.0ghz across 4 cores without belittling back for power. -
Is it possible just to have just one 980M active?
Will the 980Ms drain power even when disabled (IDG only)? -
I received my GT80 titan yesterday from newegg. It can get HOT where the exhaust fans are located. But the GPU keeps at a cool 60 C while the CPU keeps at ~80 (usually 79) when put to extreme conditions.
By far my biggest issue is the monitor makes a buzzing sound when changing the brightness. The pitch and volume of this buzzing changes with each brightness level. When at the highest or lowest brightness there's no sound, but everything in-between creates a noticeable whine. This is very disappointing and I will be contacting MSI tomorrow to address the issue. In my experience, this is a symptom of a dying inverter inside the monitor.
Despite this, I do enjoy the laptop immensely and will be sad to ship it back to MSI for repair (if they agree). -
Have you tried to wax the source of the noise? It maybe coil noise, no? -
-
Just regular paraffin wax over the wires will do as long as the temperature is below 99F. A vinyl electrical tape may also work.
BTW, to find out what LCD you have check the "Hardware Ids" property on the "Details" tab of the "Monitor" device in the "Device Manager" application (if you're using Windows).Last edited: Jan 23, 2015 -
Will you guys upload your results to 3DMark[1]? I didn't find a single result from 4720HQ and 4980HQ.

Agreed Cloud, but not to worry. I think the post was inappropriate too, and Ryzeki was sent a PM immediately after the posting. I think it was simply a misunderstanding on the MSI Rep's part..... on one hand the OP inquires about different Cherry switches, and on the other, the Rep replies about the keyboard color. Nonetheless, whatever the misunderstanding, this is no excuse for the OP's inappropriate attitude, name-calling, or violating the forum rules.

so now backlit color or any other nonsense.....Ok, saying the F word is a bit too much, but sometimes bening not understood can suck...right?? -

NICE GTVEVO! I'll have mine soon, and will post various benchmarks. Both the processor and drivers are new to FutureMark, and will need to be certified or approved by them..... but this will change soon.

People, remember the forum rules when posting. There is no excuse to be rude or insulting, and bypassing the filter is unacceptable.
We are all part of the community and poison does not help anyone.
This laptop was literally just released. A lack of information is expected. Be patient and moreover be polite. -

Let's just be careful with what words we use. A mechanical keyboard uses switches (the type can vary and is coded by colour) and then on top of that you have the caps which can be pulled off and changed.
It would be cool if MSI offered different types of switches but this would require a new keyboard and they are not cheap to produce. -
This is a repost of the now "funny" thread with the latest update.
The profanity was an intentional display of my rudeness. That's how I roll when anyone throws crap (is this word allowed?) at me!
