Ok so quick first impressions, my one and only test so far right out of the box was 13218 with Firestrike 3dmark.com and this machine wasn't generating any heat. The GPU show 68c and 62c and the fans were no where near full speed so cooling seems to be very good so far and cpu peaked at 78c. Took me like 2 hours to burn the recovery which is part of the 1tb drive.

For comparison my AW18 with 4930mx , 32gb ram, 780m stock would run 8400 give or take a few points.

As far as CPU overclocking, in the bois I don't see anywhere that you can adjust the clock speed.

In terms of GPU overclocking the power slider is unlocked so they can be overclocked easily without modification it seems.

I recommend downloading Intel XTU, undervolting dynamic core voltage at least -75mV as a starting point, and then using the unlocked turbo bins to overclock! Let us know how many turbo bins are unlocked. The undervolt will help temps as haswell is hella hot and too much voltage to begin with!

    CONGRATS!!

    Very encouraging first impression.

While I am still interested in seeing some benchmarks with the i7-4980hq, I am starting to lean more and more to thinking that the i7-4720hq is the way to go since it should be able to maintain its turbo speed. However, if the cooling in this machine is much better than the gt72, perhaps the it-4980hq will be able to keep up at its turbo speeds as well.

To be honest, I am just looking to get just the right amount of specs to ensure the ability to have consistent 60fps gaming at 1080p for the next three years.

Hey guys. I purchased my gt8o from Amazon and was wondering what the difference is, if any, from amazon and new eggs. There is about a 4oo dollar difference between what seems like the same model.

This is the one from Amazon I'm referring to
    MSI Titan GT80 2QE-033US 18.4-Inch Laptop ( Black ):Amazon

    And neweggs

In XTU you have the ability to move the cores to the setting below.
    1 = 38x
    2 = 37x
    3 = 36x
    4 = 36x

Good deal I would use those clocks then 24/7 and undervolt to -75mV or more on the core. Just test -75mV for awhile, then decrease increments of -10mV more to find most stable undervolt. After it blue screens and reboots, I would then set it +5 or +10mV above what it crashed at and test for stability at that point.

The computer will maintain those clocks and undervolts even after reboot as long as it doesn't crash.

The undervolt will easily shave off 5c off the CPU temps.

I can run my 4900mq at 3.7 x4 at -90mV all day no issues.

For BF4 I've now been using 3.8ghz x4 at -75mV also fully stable.

So reading on here that only the 001 which is the i7-4720HQ is having me a little confused with my dealer.

I'm not sure if Australia is different but I get told that the ones coming here next week is what I assume the 009 as it's a i7-4980HQ but also with 32gb of ram.

In all honesty I don't care if it's a 001 and have told him so but he keeps confirming with MSI and they tell him it's the i7-4980HQ but also with 32gb of ram, and funnily enough all aussie retailers I can find are selling that sku.

Kong Computers (where I'm getting it from), Game dude, PC Case Gear to name just a few.

Did Australia steal all of your 009's?

I'll hopefully be able to let you know next week.

Is my understanding correct that the Optical Drive and the 2.5 hard drive slot are running off of SATA II rather than SATA III? My understanding was that is how the gt72 is setup (with the m.2 drives taking the four available SATA III slots) and I was not sure if that was the same with the gt80 titan

Could someone tell me what type/performance of SSD is the 128GB M.2? I am wondering if its worth the upgrade to Crucial M550 M.2, and it appears that the shipped SSD receives no credit when upgrading, meaning one would have to pay the full retail price for Crucial M550 from the original.

From the video review it looked like those were Kingston m.2 ssds. Take a look at 16:35 in the video review. From doing a little research about them they appear to be listed as 120gb rather than 128gb ssds on Kingston's page),

Performance seems very solid to the point where I am not sure it it is worth upgrading to another brand (especially since people expect better m.2 ssd drives in the next year or so). Here's a link of a review of what I think is the stock M.2 ssd:

Nice thorough review by Gentech PC, although I wish you took your time to talk more about the touchpad and how responsive it is because I've heard mixed opinions about it.

And please for your next review make use of that lb/kg switch on your scale, many of us prefer to see the weight in kg so it'd be nice if you show us both :)

    Cheers

An important thing to remember is that storage and memory hardware is always subject to change, and can be very much affected by supply and demand...... at the time of the build or production run, or can even vary from country to country, SKU to SKU. To give an example of this, if we look at the M.2 SSD's equipped in GT72 SKU's slated to the U.S., the following brands/part numbers were seen:

Kingston-M2-SSD.JPG (I suspect this is the Kingston M.2 SSD you are noting in the GT80 video review)

    Toshiba-M2-SSD.JPG (Toshiba)

    Hynix-M2-SSD.JPG (Hynix)

RAID performance can vary considerably amongst the hardware brands....... i.e.:

    kingston SRAID 3.jpg kingston2 SRAID 3.jpg (Kingston M.2 SSD, GT72, 512GB, SuperRAID 3 config.)

    toshiba2 SRAID 3.jpg (Toshiba M.2 SSD, GT72, 512GB, SuperRAID 3 config.)

Also, generally the larger capacity SSD's are faster.

    :)

    Very nice review.

Interesting though that there was an at least noticeable difference in benchmarks in the two reviews done so far (Gentech and XOTIC PC).

The Firestrike score from the Gentech review was only about 400 off from the NP9377 980m sli scores I have seen posted on NBR with the 4940MX processor.

That gives me some more confidence that the i7-4720hq is enough rather than spending the extra monty for the i7-4980hq

Thanks for point it out, didn't pay attention to the webcam, only at the GPUs. :D

Thank you and I'll see if I can post another video just for the touchpad.

The scale purchased from USPS actually only works with lb and the kb mode doesn't really exist, that's why I didn't press it. :p need to buy a new scale. :D

Thanks a lot for all the info posted in this thread.
I still have some doubts though. Here they are:

    1. Are the CPUs overclockable? I thought the i7-4xxxHQ were locked.
    2. Does the it supports Optimus? Does it need to be restarted to activate the IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor)?
    3. What the "graphics card button" do?
    4. If I change the LCD will I void warranty?
    5. Will they release a GT80 keyboard with Cherry "Black" switches?
    6. Where can I buy spare keyboard, LCD and other parts?
    7. What countries are already selling the GT80 in Europe?
    8. Off-topic: Why FIVR will not be included in Skylake?

I woke up this morning to a failed raid , what a bummer. Any advise on the easier method of replacement? MSI warranty claim, new egg exchange, exchange directly through kingston, eat the cost and upgrade lol.

Ouch, is that the stock m.2 SSD?

How's the performance of your 840 EVO in the SATA II slot? Still feel pretty fast in real world applications even though it's not in the SATA III slot? Just asking because that was exactly what I was contemplating doing if I end up purchasing this model.

Yes the stock kingston m2 ssd failed last night. So I killed the raid and just using the single 128gb m2 for the Os until I decide what's best to do.

Putting the EVO in the sata2 slot I could tell a difference for sure, that drive holds all my games. The stock 1tb HD is 7200rpm that comes with it runs pretty decent for a conventional. But I already had the evo so figured I might as well use it.

Yes if you have the EVO already you might as well use it (as I said, I was planning on going that route as well). Shame about the noticeable impact in performance. Still an improvement over the 7200 rpm drive though I would assume.

GTVEVO, how's the cooling while gaming so far? Is a cooling pad needed at all or have you found the cooling to be sufficient?

I know this machine is a monstrosity, but if the cooling is good enough to not need a cooling pad that would be a big plus to me when gaming on my recliner (I use a large tray-like platform that is supported by the recliner arms).

I do use a cooling pad but mainly because I move from room to room and not all surfaces are good for resting on, I don't see much difference with the pad on or off but on my lap it keeps me cooler. Overall the cooling seems pretty good, cpu on hard gaming session hit 85c or so peak but didn't stay there and one of the 980s does run warmer than the other also got into the low 80s. The fans werent maxed by no means so I expect the profiles to get ramped up. The other 980 card maxed around 73c or so. Hit the cool boost button and the cards drop considerably. I would say the cooling is suffecient and with better profiles it could be exceptional because the fans have the power on hand.

Before I ran liquid ultra and on my AW18 so cooling was never an issue really in stock clocks so I might do the same at some point with the Titan for that extra peace of mind and the liquid ultra seemed to not degrade either.

Sounds good. I apologize for all the questions but I am on the fence on whether to go with this machine or to go more portable with one of the 980m non-sli) Sager models (either the NP8652 or the NP9752), but I keep coming back to this machine because once I get to a price configuration point with the Sager models I keep telling myself why not spend the extra $500 and go SLI.

I currently use an AW17 so while in an optimum world I may have wanted more portability, I have certainly become used to carrying a heavier machine wherever I go.

No worries at all. This is my first MSI and I am really happy with the design in terms of looks and methodology for hardware service. I am still stunned with the quality and the fact there is absolutely no heat (I mean None) on your keyboard any longer so I have no regrets what so ever.

I will be interested to see the benchmarks on the 009 model. There is a youtube video review of the 009 posted from a gentleman in New Zealand, but he did not appear to run the same benchmarks as the video reviews of the 001 machine.

I was intrigued as to the potential FPS difference between the two. I can imagine that it's probably only a few fps but curious nonetheless.

What I would do is swap the two SSDs to see if the failure is truly in the drive and not somewhere else. Sometimes just removing & replugging the drive(s) will clean any possible corrosion or other foreign matter on the connector pins and then Bob's your Uncle. If it is indeed a bad SSD then replacement should be unquestioned under warranty. I understand access to the drives is easy and does not effect the warranty.

One of the first things I do after a machine is set up with a SSD + magnetic drive is make a bootable clone of the SSD on a partition on the magnetic drive as a backup; it's cheap insurance for just the sort of situation you're in.

Good luck, be sure to let us know how it turns out.

Ya I checked the ports swapping the drives out to confirm. Thankfully I did have a backup from that morning so restored under legacy boot and running on a single 128gb ssd currently.

    I on the same situation/doubt! :)
But I'm leaning towards the GT80 recently because of the cooling system and warranty.
The biggest doubt though is the keyboard. It looks fine but I don't know how I'm gonna feel about it on the long run. I wish they had offered alternatives, like a regular keyboard or a keyboard with different switches.

Admittedly I only have experience with Cherry Browns and Blues. MY CMStorm keyboard uses Cherry Browns and I love it so much for general use that it has become the keyboard I use at my job. My home keyboard is the g710+ version that also uses Cherry Browns. I have found them to be excellent for gaming. My Razer Orbweaver uses the Cherry Blues and that's probably my least favorite part about the Orbweaver (but the stealth version was not available when I purchased it).

I think right now I am just evaluating whether for the games I generally play on my laptop (MMOs, RTS and MOBAs) whether the i7-4720 will be suitable or whether I should drop down to one 980m but go for a faster processor such as the i7-4810 or i7-4910. I'm leaning to the 4720 will be fast enough (and that I will be playing a lot more FPS games with the sli setup).

I have the same problem. I don't know any metrics to allow me to make a good decision about that.
The main question is: what's the minimum CPU requirements to avoid CPU bottleneck with the double 980M SLI configuration of the GT80?
I hope the 4980HQ will be enough because it's not upgradable.
Also, I've read that 2x 970M SLI with 4710HQ do cause a lot of thermal throttling (>40%) due to overheating.
I hope more detailed benchmarks appear as soon as possible.

There is nothing much faster than the 4980hq in existence, certainly at stock so there are no socketed options that would have done the job either.

I haven't seen any thermal throttling from the gpus or cpu, I havent seen any evidence of bottlenecks with the 4720 either in my testing and logging.
