Again, the keyboard is made for MSI by SteelSeries, and it appears there is a miscommunication with the MSI Rep. Why not PM Geno with MSI USA? I am sure he will provide you with a good answer. Seriously though, this mechanical DT style keyboard is a notebook first, and it's a bit ridiculous to expect MSI to have Steelseries produce custom-order keyboards. Also, I think the photo above explains MSI and Steelseries choice in the Cherry Brown switches. Are these switches really a deal-breaker for you? Maybe contact Steelseries regarding your specific requirements, and see where that takes you.

Anybody have any comment on the screen? I heard is a Samsung PLS screen? What's that difference between this and the IPS screen? Honestly, I have no idea with this stuff...

I have heard the same, but not certain yet, as I am still awaiting the notebook's arrival. I've also heard the brightness, contrast, and viewing angles are outstanding. This is how MSI is currently marketing the panel:

Stay-tuned to the thread's post #1 & 2, because I'll be posting more information soon.

Just keying in that Cherry switches can be user moddified in most cases. It is tedious work but you just pull the stem out and replace with the spring & stem of your choice.

So if your really into mech keyboards (I am) it may be worth looking into for you.

Probably best to buy a "doner" keyboard that way you can put the parts you pull into the other keyboard and still have a working keyboard that you can then resell or keep around.

I think its the same display I have on my AW18. Best display I have ever used and its much better than TN displays. Its very bright, the colours are amazing and you get pitch black and real white and not greyish white like you get on GT72 and GT70 displays.

PLS is IPS. PLS is a term Samsung use for their IPS displays, and it have some further improvement from IPS

It may be depending on the noise level. All I got so far was some online videos with short demonstrations of how loud it is.
I really want to try the keyboard with Brown, Red and Black switches because I've been told those are the less noisy of them.
To me it doesn't matter who is the keyboard maker.
Since MSI have decided to use keyboards with Cherry MX switches nothing special to question them if they are going to release keyboards with different switches.
If that's a hard task for a laptop manufacturer then that's a deal breaker to me. Considering my previous experience with the subject addressing Steelseries is certainly something I won't do.

Cormogram, please don't take offense but I really feel you would be happier by just building a rig in all honesty. There are a lot of advantages when doing this, you should explore that route if you haven't already.

    That's a good idea.
I've asked before but I don't remember if it was on this thread, so here it goes again.
Is it possible to change the key caps and then change the keyboard layout settings on Windows and transform an AZERTY or QWERTZ keyboard into a QWERTY one?

That's an option I'm considering but so far it's not cheaper than a GT80.
Also, there's a lot of uncertainty about the parts I'll get.
Could you recommend a supplier of barebones?
The only Clevo model I've found that can handle a 980M dual-SLI is the P570WM, but what an ugly old monster it is! lol

I would say that I could notice a small difference when physics where getting involved but this was in benchmarking and while watching frame rates and not during game play so much. During game play I dont know if I could identify the cpu change by eye and without logging. With logging I could see the processor had more left mainly on one core which always seems to be hit harder on Far Cry 4. All being said I stand my ground when I say the 4720 is more than plenty for game play but if you use a high refresh monitor or just want that extra edge the 4980 will provide it at a cost.

    Hopefully this makes sense.

The sad part is your single 980m is as fast as 780m in sli on my aw18 in stock form. The maxwell series cards have seriously delivered.

    Ha, yup...great mobile GPUs.

I did a Firestrike run of my i7 5930K/980 SLI desktop (micro-ITX) rig and came up with 19943 - 69% faster than your i7 4980HQ/980M SLI GT80 Titan SLI. The GT80 Titan SLI is as incredible as promised!!

Its a newer Haswell CPU aka "Crystalwell" so this is pretty normal and they will eventually add it to their inventory.

As for throttling I honestly see the same throttling profiles as I did with the 4720 which is about 30 secs of full boost then it jump back and forth in and out of boost. The 4980 does seem to respond better to the dynamic core under volt of about -90 or so to keep it stable at stock clocks. When overclocking 4.3 seems pretty stable for stress testing but 4.4 doesnt seem stable at all so FYI, but in all honesty I wouldn't run this on any laptop unless the heat could be controlled as the CPU touched the lower 90s in the 4.3 stress test with the stock TM. With Liquid ultra the heat should improve a great deal but I don't think its a must for myself as I know a core bench marking type of person where someone like Mr. Fox "Guru" would have done this already.

4.4Ghz is the limit of 4980HQ or it could reach 4.6GHz (6 bins up)?
I never run full-time OC. But I'd like to know how far I can go safely.
The throttling you've mentioned isn't thermal, right? What's the max CPU temperature you've got on 4.3GHz?
BTW, does anyone knows the difference between the Intel Wireless-AC 7260 and 7265?

    For 1 core is 4.6 but for all 4 cores it's 4.4.

No, it is not a bug. This happen when new hardware is introduced, and FutureMark explains this as follows:

But can you make a YouTube video of a game showing the CPU stable at these overclocks without power throttling? I would be very impressed if it's able to do 4.0ghz stable across 4 cores for an extended period of time. Otherwise the overclocks are useless because once it starts throttling it begins really down clocking cores and then up clocking. The process will continue to repeat, and IMO is worse performance than a lower 100% stable clock.

The 47w TDP is the Achilles Heal on higher end Haswell chips. It just makes the 4720hq the better option as it will probably clock close to the same speeds.

The 4720 does it too, the aka turbo clock will only hold for 30 seconds or so then it throttles from what I can tell. This occurs even when temps are very safe and undervolted, maybe throttle stop can solve this but this behavior is normal and occurred on my 4930mx chip also after 60 to 90 seconds. I wouldn't call it useless as benchmarks show improvements over clocking but it would be better if throttling didn't occur.

No I am aware the 4720hq also does this. My point was that since both chips are 47w TDP.

Can you hold 3.8ghz stable across all cores in game with a decent undervolt?

Well, I finally pulled the trigger on a Titan-009. Got it configured with 32GB RAM and 4 Crucial 512GB m550's in SuperRaid.

I'm unbelievably excited! I'm currently on a P170HM with a 580m. I usually go on a 3-4 year upgrade cycle thereabouts, so I usually go big, and right now this is as big as it gets, the biggest I've ever gone really, but price was actually very acceptable for a machine of this caliber and everything it can provide. I work a lot with VMs and the development thereof, so the 4980HQ, the huge fast storage, and 32GB of memory is very helpful. In case anyone was wondering why I shelled out for such "unnecessary" specs; they're not so "unnecessary" when you're a traveller, a gamer, a writer, and a developer at the same time and want to work off one machine, haha!

I'm so glad MSI released this model. It's like it was made for me.

Will post a review when I get the chance to play with it, finally. I didn't get the Rush processing from XoticPC so it might be a bit of a wait, but I'm sure it will all be worth it in the end.

    Interesting and Congratz!

My -009 is also being shipped, and I was going to upgrade mine in similar fashion..... but in the 11th hour, I've decided to keep the stock configuration. Mobile Intel Gen 5 tech is just on the horizon, and before adding additional expense, I think I will wait to see how MSI's next generation develops.

I think that's great. Honestly, if this is going to be your main machine (and given the price it probably would be for most people), then that is definitely how I would spec it out as well.

You will have to give us more reports on the 4980hq...I know there's some frustration on the Sager boards about the 4720hq and its inability to hold its turbo boost, so I'd like to hear how the 4980hq performs and whether it encounters similar issues.

Hey guys i just purchased my 001 lastnight and was curious if anyone has replaced the compound yet and seen any good results, i'm considering CLU but im alittle scared to use it. can anyone report the temp drops from stock tim to a high quality tim or CLU? also i've noticed Hidevolution has an option for adding tiny copper heatsinks to the existing surface areas, anyone experience with that leading to temp drops?

    Thanks in advanced!

I am thinking of getting the 009 version of the GT80. Should I go 4 ssd's in Raid 0 or just 2 in Raid 0? What is the likelihood that it will crash? I plan to use this thing for the next 5 years at least and I want to get the most performance while minimizing grief from my system.

I would just start with the 2 and then add later, if you are adding you can do an on the fly type migration unless you are changing the Raid base size. Also the M.2 ssd will go down in price as time passes so if you don't need the space right away I would just wait.

If you are trying to flash the GT80 you simply put the file on a USB drive and once you are in the bois you can use the menu to run the update. You do not need a flash tool to my knowledge so review the instructions. Also I don't think the update changes the fan tables, at least I didn't see that in the remarks.

I can't even download the instructions.

I was able to flash but opening cmd with administrator and turning off the smartscreen win 8 bs. After this I just ran the EC9028_Win64.bat from dos and it flashed and rebooted. I didn't see any battery reset but the bois shows the correct ec version.

It's included in the zip file with the update, when you extract the zip there are a couple of .bat files one being the 64bit needed. To run in administrator mode it's easiest to right click on the tile or icon and select the option. Then set your directory by calling CD and then running the bat.

Usually if the number pad stops responding it's software though. I would recommend running the stealseries updates online because they killed mine too.

Just think about another thing. The SLI line. I saw folks with aw18 has complained their SLI line was down due to the heat issue( I think that's what they said ). So, is the similar issue will occur on gt80?
And the heating. I don't think there is much of problem on the GPUs, but the CPU is set up between two graphic cards, is the heat on the GPUs gonna affect the CPU's heat exchange?
I'm considering to buy this laptop, but I'm still struggling due to the weight and the price. My other choice is Aorus X7 Pro, it has similar design, but lighter.

If you are worried about heat do you think a thinner laptop will be cooler? Any SLI setup will have challanges with cooling.

The GT80 far surpasses the AW18 with heat in the cpu area. The AW 18 would run itself into thermal shutdown with stock tm easily.

Regardless many challanges can be overcome with knowledge and you have to purchase what fits your needs best.

Running the SSDs in RAID0 is a mistake. They are extremely fast on their own, already - the speed gained is not worth the higher risk for disk failure (RAID0 takes two disks and treats them as one - effectively doubling your risk of crash). I'd recommend just running a 128GB or larger SSD for OS and a large spinning disk drive for your game installs. Or a larger SSD for your game/installs/storage but not RAID0.

RAID does not make sense for gamers. If you want RAID - do RAID1. But you can enjoy data reliability/safety in much cheaper/easier ways (I.E. cloud-backup options like CrashPlan - or buying a cheap NAS for backup).

If you're talking about thermal throttling it doesn't happen in the GT80 afaik.
The current 980M dual-SLIs get very hot! That's why you won't see them in thin laptops such as the Aorus X7 Pro.
According to the benchmarks available today the Aorus X7 Pro runs hotter and louder than the GT80, except for the keyboard noise.
Yes, the GPUs will surely increase the temps of the CPU but the GT80 cooling system seems to be strong enough to prevent it from increasing above 180F with the regular setting and up to 169F with the fans at full-power.

Where is the best place to purchase this unit from if you wanted it ASAP? It seemed like the 001 models are fairly available but the 009 models not so much.

GTVEVO, where did you end up purchasing your 009 unit from?

Can a GT80 owner tell me the SSID of the GPUs? (Devicemanager -> Details -> Hardware IDs)

In GenTech's review they showed the GPU-Z and it says 10DE-13D7. So, it should be 13D7.
