Well I have checked the boot priorities and disabled network. And made sure I have the dvd drive first and still gives me this error, reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. Which I have the cd in the drive.

Try that disc on another PC to verify, since it's possible that the disc may not be bootable.

Hmm that's the first I've experienced that problem with the recovery cd not being bootable hahahaha. I'll try that when I get home. Thanks for the help guys.

Anyone noticed that audio in gt80 plays not so good as in 16f1/16f2/16f3 (gx60/gt680/gt60). I think soundblaster cinema 2 it is a crap! I have compared sound and gt80 is worst than 16f1... There is no bass like in 16f1.

To be honest, no MSI laptop has sounded better than the 16F1. My GX660R had the loudest, clearest sound. But! my GT80 does sound louder and slightly better than GT60.

The bass is kind of small though.

majster, give me the unlocked bios! or have you at least found anything good to tweak? And what about the haptic feedback module :D

Unlocked bios gives only OC for memory and little bit cpu :) . I got over 13k in 3dmark11 on 4720 non sli. Haptic feedback module is working fine I don`t know why msi refused to suport it in final product. Probably $ ? I can`t to share how to unlock bios I promised that ;).

Is there anywhere on the bios that might let you raise the TDP for the CPU? I know this is a longshot and basically impossible, but one can dream. This would benefit 4980hq users the most. How much does the haptic feedback module cost?

Yep there are some options for TDP control. I don`t know about costs of haptic ... Maybe 20 $ .

My GT80-071 is coming in four days (so it's too late), but I wanted to know "in general" how a single 980 graphics card compares to a dual (SLI) 970 setup on any comparable machine (but mostly an MSI).

If an SLI 980 is the "peak" of what MSI can do, I imagine the "peak" SLI 970 should be better than the 980 by itself.

    Thoughts?...

The 970 SLI setup will out perform the single 980M IF the game is working with SLI ok.

Quick question: if I clone my GT80 boot SSDs to a USB stick or drive will it be bootable?

With the lower price of 128GB thumb drives I'd like to use one as a boot drive backup. As MSI had me make the restoration copy of the drive onto a USB stick I assume the answer is "yes" but would just like to make sure.

    Thanks!

how would you guys compare the cooling of the gt72 to the gt80?since it seems that only the gpus got dedicated fans and the cpu not quite(talking about the gt80)....i believe i read somewhere about some gt80 cpu performing on a little high temps during testing or such.i am asking for the comparison of tehse models since im stuck in between, and if the gt80 would have at least the same cooling efficiency as the gt72(aside from the manual option),then its good nuff.

The cooling is great, but indeed the CPU gets cooled down by both fans that are closer to each GPU. Remember that GT80 cools more than GT72. That being said, Highest temps here have been 92 degrees Celsius, but nothing so far, no matter if running prime95+furmark, has caused thermal throttling or affected performance out of spec. Which is the good news.

Personally, when gaming, my CPU stays on the 80s region. My GPUs only get up to 80 and 70, when gaming extremely taxing games, otherwise they won't even get hot. Games like League of Legens which are very light, only warm the system, but witcher 2 ultra with ubersample, does get the fans going :)

Choosing between GT72 and GT80 is more about SLI vs single options. Go with what you feel is the better choice for you :) both are excellent systems and deliver amazing gaming performance.

If you are using Windows 8 it won't because it can't boot up from removable media (USB drives) after installation is done, although there are some hacks for that.
Windows 8.1 Enterprise can create Windows To Go[1] images (this requires compatible USB flash drives), but the other drives won't be accessible.

Hello, I am obviously new here and made this account to ask: What are the differences between the GT80 and the Sager NP9377-S/Clevo P377SM-A (weight, design, quality, etc.), I saw while customizing that the sager was cheaper and I could get dual 980 gpu's in it for the same price as dual 970's in the msi. Why is the GT80 worth the around $700 more? Also is there any other laptops you would consider "competitors" to these? I am in the market for a high end gaming laptop such as these.
    Thanks a ton! -Charlie

The differences tend to be in what else is being offered. There are diverse options for SLI 980m notebooks, but the differences in favor for GT80 are the excellent build quality, sound system, great stock IPS screen and of course the full size mechanical keyboard. The main drawback of the GT80 would be the soldered CPU, but that fault lies more on intel rather than MSI, and it seems only clevo offers socketed CPU. Moreover, there isn't massive performance gain in gaming in general (will depend on the game) above what the 4720HQ offers. It will depend on your needs whether you need the extra performance an MX/MQ could potentially offer via tweaking TDP. All brands offer something, and it seems most have excellent cooling systems for these specs.

Also, I am not sure about Sager/Alienware, but MSI does offer surround gaming with nvidia, so you can hook up three external monitors and game across all three. I would imagine other manufacturers have a similar approach.

For a few others though, it is the "official" GPU support the GT80, where MSI ensured that the GT80 would be able to upgrade two more GPU generations officially with upgrade kits. This doesn't mean that other brands can't be upgraded though.

Also as a general comment, there is excellent performance in both 970m and 980m SLI options. I mention this because there is also value in 970m, specially since it is currently the best overclocker all around it seems. Regardless of brand.

Having the option to replace the cpu would make the sager completely upgradable, while the soldered cpu in the GT80 means you can only easily upgrade the gpu/ram, etc. The lower price in the sager would allow me to get duo 980's, which would improve performance over the 970's. What would you say the performance difference of the SLI's would be? I agree where the things you mentioned are good for the GT80, but is it really worth $700 more, the difference between my 970 and 980 SLI? Is there any other laptops that you could say compete or are on par with these or have something that stand out?
    Thanks, Charlie

I am not sure I understand what you are trying to say here. Since we have somewhat fixed configurations of the systems, the difference of cost can vary. Configuring exactly the same specs, the difference is not 700dlrs. Moreover, having a socketed CPU does not mean you really can upgrade. As I mentioned, best you can go is something like an Haswell MX processor, and thats it. Your socket is not compatible with future intel CPU generations, and since they moved for soldered anyways, you won't be able to change the CPU over at all.

The difference on stock 970m and 980m SLI was already shown by Cormogram, so what exactly do you want? Are you trying to say Sager is better just because its cheaper? I don't understand what you want here. There are few options out there for high end SLI, and each have their pro/con. If mechanical keyboard, excellent sound system, great stock screen, official future upgrades and multimonitor gaming are not worth it for you, good for you, you have other choices you can follow :)

Personally I am extremely happy with my purchase, and I wouldn't trade my GT80 because it fulfills my expectations.

Everyone, what are your thoughts on monitor overclocking? I noticed I have no problem using 72hz with the monitor. Is there something I should properly consider/take care of before attempting to OC the monitor?

There are just a few laptops with GTX 900M series SLI:
    MSI: GT80 (980M)
    Aorus: X7 Pro (970M) & X5 (965M)
    Clevo: P370/375/377 (900M series)

You may also get an old Clevo, Alienware, Asus or Lenovo and try to fit new MXM-B boards with 900M GPUs.
Note that you may have to provide a cooling system upgrade to handle the extra TDP. In the case of dual 980M SLI it's 240W.

The big advantage of the Clevo P37x is the Thunderbolt port. ;)

Does anyone knows if the Clevo P570 can be adapted to support 900M series GPUs?

Thanks for this! My objective is to clone copy the boot SSDs so if one fails I have an exact bootable copy to use to repair/replace. If I create a new drive by shrinking the magnetic drive D: by 256GB and clone to it would that partition be bootable?

Not without some hacking. All information needed to boot will be stored in the cloned 256GB partition but since it's in another drive the BCD must be updated.
You will need to run "bootrec /rebuildbcd" to fix that.
Considering you have a failed RAID volume chances are you will need a Bare Metal Reset/Recovery from Windows RE[1].
So, (1) clone the partition and (2) create a USB recovery drive.

As to the embedded mobile CPU's, this is a decision of Intel, and manufacturers still using older MB's designed with socketed CPU's, will most likely see this coming to an end as supplies dwindle....... unless Intel decides to change their coarse on this issue.

If price is most important in your decision making, then yes, other brands offer cheaper models, but there are many other factors to consider, such as; design, innovation, latest technologies used, storage options, chipset, the cooling solution and temps, fan noise, sound system, weight, dimensions, feature benefits, manufacturer's focus (i.e.: gaming?), support, and warranty. If you do your homework well, generally you will find there is truth in, 'You get what you pay for'! Also, you may want to ask yourself, how do others keep their price lower? This market is as competitive as most, so how are corners being cut? Perhaps, this is due to the use of older surplus components, requiring little to no modification for current use..... in other words, components not requiring new production runs. Generally this can be seen in chassis designs, wherein older MB's are commonly used, wherein older storage solutions can be seen, etc., etc., etc. However, this will soon change for manufacturer's doing this, as Intel's next-round of mobile processors and chipsets are released..... but then it will be back to business as usual, cutting corners, till the next cycle of technologies are released.

Anyhow, choosing the right notebook can be a difficult process, but I would narrow your choice to two or three, then start with an item-by-item comparison of features, hardware, and warranty. With price in mind, make a list of what YOU consider 'pros vs. cons', and then follow this with a good look at all website reviews and videos for the specific models of interest. If by then you still cannot decide, then I recommend more appropriately taking this discussion to the ' Which Notebook Should I Buy?' thread.

    :)

Thanks Meaker. while 72hz isnt that much over 60, I did notice extra fluidity, and if its relatively harmless, might as well take advantage of it!

Simply created a custom resolution and refreshrate with nividia control panel. I then selected it both via the nvidia control panel and the windows monitor settings.

Thank you everyone for your help! I think I have decided to get the msi route. Has anyone had any experience with McAfee Antivirus Plus 2014? There is a promotion and I could get that for free, but I have read some pretty mixed/bad reviews. Is it worth getting it for free or is it that bad? Also is it possible for the gt80 to output 4k to an external monitor or no- I saw this on the msi gt80 page:
"With the Matrix Display, you can now use the latest surround view display technology to build the multi-display gaming experience, or with 4K resolutions or multitask effectively by HDMI 1.4 by 30Hz and dual Mini Display Port 1.2 by 60Hz refresh rate. (Overall 4 monitors including notebook’s monitor on GT80)
Handle the big screen with support of up to 3840 x 2160 resolutions to watch your movies or play your games when connected to an HDTV."
    Thanks :)

Can anyone suggest a replacement of the backpack? I want a laptop sleeve for protection and be able to slip it into hand-carry luggage, so, not the backpack. I was looking at the Everki 18.4" laptop bag/sleeve but not sure if it fits the Titan.

I was wondering if anyone with access to a GT80 with two 970m can confirm if the CPU and GPU temperatures are much lower than those on one with two 980m. I would expect a significant difference as a 970m runs much cooler than a 980m.

Also, if I am worried about the highest temps of 90+C (CPU) and 80+C (GPU), I was wondering if it would be better to go with a GT80 with two 970m. Is the build and everything else the same on the laptop regardless of the GPU I opt for?

    Thanks.

No one has ever reported thermal shutdown or even thermal throttling under the stock configuration so why you planning for something that hasnt happened? I would expect the 970m to run cooler if they use the same heatsink assembly but I haven't seen any official reports either. Hopefully a vendor will chime in on that question.

Well, firstly, thanks for letting me know about the stock config. I've been around looking for a laptop for quite sometime now, and have been on this forum as well reading reviews on several brands/laptops (MSI, AW, Sager, Gigabyte, Aorus, Razer, to name some). I've had somewhat not good experiences with other brands so far - have had to return some laptops. Now I'm at a stage where I desperately want a laptop that is of very good quality in build and in performance and will last me a few years (regardless of the price). So I may be trying to take a conservative approach when picking a config - while allowing room for things to go wrong. :) Hopefully not!

The last few weeks I haven't been here much so haven't check about this. I did see a while back Striker saying he had higher temps than usual on his GT80, do you know how that worked out for him?

Ya I am not sure what he did but he did seem to be happy with his revised numbers.

I my opinion do not pay for different thermal compound as the stock compound tested better on the CPU in my testing collection. Unless you move into something like Liquid Ultra.

Yes, but since it has HDMI v1.4 the refresh rate is limited on that port to: 3840×2160 @ 30Hz or 4096×2160 @ 24Hz.
On the mDP v1.2 ports you may get 60Hz on those resolutions.
I'm not sure if they have updated the GT80 with new guides but perhaps this[1] old one may help.

Sorry - a bit lazy to dig old posts, but did you have a review or posts where you talk about your system and your experience so far? I'd love to read them if possible. Thanks!

Can you please send me the details of your GT80 LCD panel. I usually get it with MonInfo[1] but you may also run:

Yes, I was concerned with my CPU temps, which peaked at 96C..... a bit toasty IMO, for a 5 minute 3DMark benchmark. As such I sent the unit to MSI for their evaluation, and interestingly enough, their comparison test unit was only 2 degrees cooler than mine in their Furmark/Prime95 testing.... with my unit maxing at 97C. From there, my unit was sent to Ken for re-paste and further testing, wherein he managed to reduce temps a few degrees. No, I am not real happy with the CPU temps, but pleased he managed an improvement..... I'll take all I can get. Anyhow, Ken has my GT80 on-loan for as long as he needs it, and as a result of everything, a new revised fan table is currently being tested.

In the mean time, I am enjoying my cool & quiet..... yet adequately powerful, GT72.

    :)

Hi everybody, I'm thinking about purchasing this laptop but I have few quick questions for you guys first. When I game away from home I just plan on using the laptop screen and that's it. However when I'm home, I want to plug 3 external 1080p displays into it. My two questions are:

Has anyone tried gaming at 5760*1080? How was your performance?

Can I plug the monitors into the laptop and then close the lid without the computer overheating?

    Thanks, everybody!

Thank you for the update. It really helps as I am trying to make a decision on the GPU and the CPU I should pick for my GT80.

Didn't try it yet, but according to specification a triple setup of 1920x1080 @ 120Hz is possible.
Not sure if the same monitor model is a requirement though.
You may change the "Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings > Power buttons and lid > Lid close action" to "Do nothing".
