I choose the Titan over another desktop and previous AW18 due to.

Keyboard being mechanical and placement away from heat.

Screen size and quality and external 4k support.

Methodical design and quality with interior and exterior.

True 900m series sli gpu support.

All in one package for a real complete gaming machine.

I got mine for the same reasons as those above, which have come together for me to become some kind of fold out desktop experience I can use anywhere. I have a surface pro 2 so knew I could carry a backup if it was too cumbersome to use when out and about, but I've found it's size and layout mean for entirely different reasons to anything else i've used in my lap that it's actually a lot more usable and because of the hardware that is inside makes it unbeatable for me.
I've now replaced my desktop entirely with it, the only part of the user experience for me that is marginally worse is the fans run louder than my desktop when gaming, to the point where I use headphones a lot of the time I wouldn't of before, Far Cry 4 on ultra settings is not as bad as Assassins creed unity on ultra though so it's a variable problem rather then it just ramping up on every game you play.
At first as my new desktop experience I was just connecting in the old peripherals like I would with a desktop and leaving the gt80 to the side but I've sat my lg 29 ultrawide on a box (so it's higher than the open screen) so I can use the gt80 in front of me still with the other screen as an extra, I also have an lg 22" I used with the ultrawide on the desktop but this set up with the ultrawide above the gt80 screen is preferable for me.
Watching a film or youtube at 1080p on it doesn't budge my fans from idle but if you're needing to use something that is going to tax the machine in a public place then be prepared for it's impression of darth vader deep breathing.

I found a cell phone piece on ebay that I purchased to try out, visually it looks spot on but I will let everyone know once I receive it. It was 4.99 so I figured worth a try.

The Sager 9733 unit is great from a hardware perspective....the choice of stock screen is abysmal though. I think the Titan is probably the better overall choice if all you are going to do is gaming. Better Keyboard, better stock screen choice and good build quality.

Negatives for me would be the four m.2 SATA slots (eliminating using a fast 2.5" SSD in SATA3 mode such as the 850 Samsung Pro) and the socketed CPU. However, the socketed CPU should be good enough for gaming purposes.

    Hello!

What I am saying is that you will get the benefit of SLI without issues with GT80 titan. I am saying you are expecting too much out of the CPU, which will bring you marginal additional performance, on select games. You do not need a desktop CPU to enjoy SLI, specially with games that are taxing on the GPU. Does that mean that more CPU performance is useless, not at all! But you won't get 50% more performance or anything crazy like that.

The Sager SLI 980m is most likely a great laptop too, specially the choice of hardware available. I, however, went with the MSI due to proven quality for me, mechanical keyboard and the excellent stock screen. Even though the Sager has upgradable CPU, you won't be able to upgrade it beyond the 4th gen series of intel CPUs, and its game performance (note: game, not overall performance) won't be that greater compared to 4720HQ. You can check HTWingNut's Sager review, he got very small performance differences in a handful of games, testing different CPU speeds. It really depends on the game to get any benefit.

I didn't go with a desktop because I needed a laptop, and while I do play at home, I don't play always on the same spot/ place. I do take my monster titan out to friend's houses as well. I was originally considering the GS30, but the Titan was a nice looking, well featured laptop that simply caught my eye.

If you prefer battery time then it's best to go with an ultrabook such as GS30 but if you want even more battery life then you can consider getting the ones with regular Intel HD Graphics. However, it will not give you much performance in gaming at all, basically any games is not playable.
If you want something in between then it's got to be the GS60 but battery life cannot be that good.

If gaming performance is what you are after, the GT80 with 970m SLI will be stronger than the GT72 with a single 980m.

You can make sure the power options are set to High Performance and double check in Nvidia Control Panel to make sure SLI is turned on. You can then run a benchmark since its easier to compare your results to where you should be. 3DMark is free and the most popular one http://www.3dmark.com/.

I was having a lot of problems with dropping frames on my -001 model. Evolve was stuttering at 40-50 FPS, Dying Light and Shadow of Mordor would drop to 40 constantly. Synthetic benches like Fire Strike came in right at target however. Computer was set to High Performance. Dragon Gaming Center was set to whatever the max mode was (can't remember the name, Sport Mode?)

I noticed that whenever I had Intel XTU open, even if I hadn't changed any settings, all of a sudden CPU usage would jump dramatically, and I would keep 60fps in my games. I figured the culprit was Dragon Gaming Center as XTU was overriding it. I uninstalled it and the CPU usage problem went away.

Very happy now, depending on the game, I get 85-95% of the performance of my desktop at stock settings (a 4770k with SLI Titans.) Before uninstalling Dragon Gaming Center I was getting around 60% of my desktop's performance.

Someone in this thread explained a while ago that the dragon gaming center applies a factory overclock, I know with my machine -023 (980's), if I don't have it in sport mode it goes from super smooth on ACU and FC4 to being crap so don't do anything too hasty. Hopefully one of the non newbs will advise on risks if their are any to uninstalling.

It might or it might not, it just happened to work in my case. GPU and CPU boosts/speeds, cpu voltage etc. are all the same whether it's running (sport mode) or disabled. I ran a few games with HWinfo64 monitoring in the background, and disabled Dragon Gaming Center halfway through each run and the only things that changed were one CPU core would jump from 30% to 70%-90% and FPS would go to 60fps and stabilize.

So i read online that nvidia will be releasing a patch today or soon that will disable all over clock tuning for the gt 900m series graphics cards. It was said that it was a bug in the system that was letting people able to overclock the graphics cards and now they have found were it is and there fixing it. Reason is because they said the way the graphics cards are made they were never suppose to be able to overclock and now is a reliability and is shorting the life of the cards. What is your thought on this?

My thoughts is anytime you overclock a graphics card, cpu, or even hard drive you know that it will shorten the life as is. Why is this becoming a fall back issue on nvidia, who knows? But i do believe there should be a warning on the overclock software saying we are not reliable for any damages or issues that occur if you are to overclock this graphics card, with out it i see how people can point there finger at nvidia.

Something is definitely up. I have 0 issues with league of legends maxed, limited to 60fps and it never drops from 60. when I return home next week, I can test it further.

So how do you guys like GTX 980M SLI? Does it let you keep your FPS at 60 in most games? I am curious about the most demanding games, like Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Assassin's Creed: Unity, Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs (fully patched), you know... the games that are NOT well optimized.

What about micro-stutters? Are you getting them in those demanding games? Do you play with or without V-Sync? AFAIK, to get rid of micro-stutters, you need to use V-Sync and play games @ 60fps @ 60Hz most of the time!

Regarding power settings, for whatever reason my GT80-001 was defaulting back to "Balanced" every time I let it sleep or shut it down. After trying to change this behavior by choosing "High Performance" or a custom power setting many times (no joy) I found a workaround: make a copy of Balanced if you think you might want it and then edit the Balanced setting to what you want.

Anyone else see this default to Balanced issue?

Otherwise I couldn't be happier with this machine. The keyboard is outstanding, and something I've wanted in a laptop for 20+ years. I wear glasses with progressive lenses and with a desktop system I'm constantly having to shift focus from the keyboard to the screen and back (I look like I'm nodding all the time), with the Titan the two are close enough to the same plane so that isn't as issue: no more hunting for focus!

Obviously performance is thumping, there's no sacrifice coming from my desktop (i7 with nVidia 970), fan noise is present but not enough to be distracting, and my only worry is reliability as at least two members have reported SSD failures so far with this model which seems unusual given the normally high reliability of SSD cards.

Fingers crossed, having to send this pup in for service would really put a jinx on my janx.

Yes I tried it with no luck at all. My understanding is it isn't supported any longer so I just considered it a dead end.

Is it possible to change battery settings so it doesn't continually charge the battery and reduce its lifespan?
Short of simply disabling battery altogether in Hardware Manager and enabling it when its near empty?

I'm not sure that's the case.
I turned my Laptop on and it went to 99% (down from 100% the day before). An hour or two later it reads fully charged.

The 965M being based on the same chip should scale just like the 980M and 970M SLI.

You don't want to have deep discharges on Li-ion batteries. You must charge them often. Deep discharges are only done for calibration but it's optional.

What a bummer, the only thing you can try testing the position on the board just to ensure its the drive failing and then decide if you are going to exchange the system or buy a different drive.

There should be 2 in there. The panel to check is easy to remove. On the bottom of the computer you'll see several screws, towards the top left and mid right will be ones marked with a HDD symbol next to them. Undo those two screws, flip the computer back over, then slide the access panel a little to the right, then move it up and away. See if there are two physically there.

I just see the one m.2 drive. I would contact the place you got it from or maybe MSI directly. MSI's number will be on a sticker on the bottom of the computer.
