I went with the Everki Beacon as well. Love it! I have never owned a backpack that made lugging around a big gaming laptop so easy.

Also, new here, thanks for all the information and work contributed by people in this thread. I found it extremely helpful.

Got my GT72 a week or so ago. Going to have to add another SSD soon as BF4 pretty much filled the drive by itself haha.

Yeah that is a pretty hefty game, just make sure you get the right kind of SSD :)

It has mDP ports, so yes it should be able to run 120Hz monitors.

The model itself does not have an option for a 120hz screen, nor are any 120hz screens being made for it. It does, however, support 120hz output to a secondary monitor that has that refresh rate. :)

I've seen and read about the awesomeness of the keyboard in this model, and I would like to compare it to the new GS70 model's keyboard. Does anyone know if they are the same keyboard, and can anyone comment on if the GS70's keyboard has any flex? (I'm debating on which model to pick up, and the gtx 970m models of each are the same price, so keyboard flex is an important factor).

Can one of the owners tell me what material the palm resting area is made of? rubber, plastic, aluminium or metal?

Also, doesn't the lack of Optimus also negatively impact the longevity of the GPU?

    Thx!

The lack of optimus is not really detrimental to the dedicated GPU. The only thing that is affected is battery life, because integrated GPU is less powerful haha, but that's it :)

As for the material of the palm rest is hard plastic.

Very nice Fire Strike score! Looks like that 4980HQ does run a bit warmer than the 4710HQ.

Thanks for taking the time to re-paste and show us the results...... you da man, Ken!

jarred at anandtech just gave the 208 sku An editors choice Silver award:
AnandTech | MSI GT72 Dominator Pro Review: GTX 980M Reigns Supreme

on another topic, i think the 4980 uses more power, and because of this runs hotter and does not turbo all the time like the 4710 (at least in the gt72 chassis). this is the reason why the performance is not as far apart as it should be- basically inside the gt72 it becomes a situation of one processor running at full turbo all the time, while the other turboes some of the time..... hence the performance is not as far apart as the technical specs of the processors indicate.

In case anyone is interested, I got my 4980HQ model today. It does indeed have the same IPS LG screen as the Asus G751 - fantastic screen.

It scores 943 in the XTU benchmark (vs 681 in my GS60's 4710HQ) so a pretty significant boost in CPU speed.

In addition, I have successfully replaced the RAID 0 array with a 1TB Samsung MSATA. I don't care for RAID configs, the marginal speed boost is not worth the increased risk of failure. In addition, with the 2.5" bay being SATA 2 and not SATA 3, I wanted maximum performance. I opted for a Samsung 840 EVO 1TB MSATA. I then used an adapter from MicroSataCables here mSATA Mini SATA 3 SSD to M.2(NGFF) B Key Adapter

I took out the 4 128GB units and now have a working one drive setup which is my preference.

The adapter fits perfectly in the top. One will not fit in the bottom, but you can use this to rig something up if you want. The cable will reach nicely into the empty bay. I used electric tape to secure the msata adapter itself and then screwed another msata into that.

    http://www.microsatacables.com/msata-ssd-to-m-2-ngff-adapter-card-with-ffc-cable

I also think this will improve battery life as there is one storage device to power rather than 5.

Thanks but I already linked to the IPS data sheet back on page 45. I need someone with a calibrator to get the numbers on this specific implementation. Spec can be bs... I need real numbers.

Also please clarify if its glare or matte.

Hello guys, just registered to say that i was reading this thread from the begging and i really appreciate everything you was discussing here, for newbie as i am its really helpfull.
I recently got my GT72, with 32gb ofram, 980m Nvidia of course and i have to say, that my first experience with windows 8 and i really like it (might be since i have 32gb of ram and do not feel any struggle orl lags) i did not experience low FPSso far in any game, bf4 in ultra, and thats from the box, just really impressive. WAiting to try Far cry 4 to see how it will be.

So far i have only one thing to ask, sometimes when i leave my laptop for like 15 min( the screen off) i come back, and hear really big noise from the fans, for 30 sec approximt. and only from back fans, and when i put my hand, feel that laptop push a lot of air, i do not see any weird thing after in laptop like Tempc. or anything, maybe it the way it has to be i dont know, but would like to ask, if any1 of you can help me on this.

And also the other thing, should i always switch the graphic card to Nvidia when playing games, and intel when windows ? I mean does it hurt by any means, if i always leave it as nvidia ?

    I really enjoy that beast

    & Thanks in advance

Congrats on your newly purchase!

For the issues, have you updated the BIOS & EC to the newest version?
    Download BIOS 10F
EC 1506 (Must be used with 10F to operate correctly)

Regarding the GPU switching button, it is up to you since there's rarely any issues using Optimus (Intel <--> Nvidia) and it does help to conserve energy consumption.
If you use Nvidia GPU as dedicated GPU then the power consumption will still be higher even though it has power management in itself.

    Indeed amazing purchase ^^
Thank you for your effort helping me.

I really did not want to start messing with bios update etc. Since the laptop work really amazing and if something happens I will not forgive myself lol.
how does it work, I mean the update ? From the start I got the laptop I did not update anything except nvidia. I read in msi official forum that it fix the problem but I am not feeling confident about it to tell the truth I never updated the BIOS in my life lol either laptop or home pc

Just purchased the Dominator-Pro 445 from gentech and it is due to arrive today :) Is it normal to update the bios, and if so when? I have rarely ever messed with that and like Nomik dont want to screw anything up if everything is working as it should. Can't wait to game on the ne machine.

Generally, updating the bios is not necessary, unless it addresses a major fix..... and the old adage, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it', applies. Some do this with every update, and others only when necessary. It's a matter of discretion, but simple to do. If you feel compelled to do so, you will find the updates, and well as instructions HERE...... but if it's your first time, take your time, and follow instructions carefully. Personally, I am one of those who tends to update both the bios & EC firmware, as soon as they are released. Cautious individuals tend to wait, until they see others have done so successfully.

    :)

Disclaimer on this: What was said is correct but the reason you don't want to do it is because if it fails or you miss something it could completely brick your machine and require sending it in, which sucks on a new system. So unless you had a specific fix addressed by the flashing, viewable in changelog, then forget about.

OKkkkkkk............. I thought I covered the note of caution. I flashed system bios since the early 80's, and never bricked a system. I say this to emphasize that there is little need to be overly concerned when doing so, but you do need to have a sense of what you are doing before beginning this endeavor..... pay attention, and do so cautiously. :)

I think I will leave it as it is don't want to mess something and I still think that's these 20 sec air push is due my machine is working whole day so it might be a simple cool down or something but I am using really powerful coller still might be inside don't tHink by any means it could harm my device do not see more temp on machine then 37-40 degree. What comparing to my previous laptop (playing 3 hours skyrim online on ultra) is amazing.
Nevertheless machine feel just absolutely amazing like it was made that game don't have to lag there ^^

Do you guys make over locking on it does it worth it at that point ? Correct me if I am wrong but logically if you over lock your machine thats means more temp and tense to device what results in hotter hardware and less overall health of that bEast?
P.S sorry for being such noon lol that just my first big value laptop never paid more then 700 euro
thank you for all the replies

I don't mean an external monitor. Does it have the connectors for the internal screen to be replaced by 120 Hz? The panels are definately being made for it. Standard panel is horrible. Viewing angle sucks and on dark pictures there is a ton of lines in the image. Very poor for a laptop that costs 3000 euros.

The cost is not due to the screen though. And the internal connection definitely supports higher refreshcrates, considering people overclock panels.

The connector will not natively support 120hz displays no, but it does support the IPS display. 120hz displays would require a 40pin eDP connector as far as I am aware.

the internal display connection is "embedded display port". display port supports 120hz panels as of dp 1.2 DisplayPort - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

i am not sure what version dp is on the gt72

if you see horizontal lines on the built in display , its probably the drivers- several reviewers have run into the issue depending on the drivers: MSI GT72 Notebook Review - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

try updating intel and nvidia drivers to see if that fixes the lines. make sure refresh rate is 60hz.

as far as laptop doing stuff when you let it idle--- when i first got the laptop, it wanted a bunch of windows updates and to run maintenance on itself -- install windows updates, make the search index, defrag, antivirus, trim etc). i believe the default setting enables automatic windows updates, so the laptop will do stuff when you leave it alone initially util it completes that first maintenance cycle. i turned off sleep and hibernate and let the laptop idle overnight until it completed a full round of maintenance, by the time i woke up. i then rebooted and turned off automatic windows update installation in the morning. it seems that the first maintenance cycle is a beast-- there are a ton of windows updates to install and those catalogs etc take quiet a bit of time and processing power even on this machine.

so try to disable hibernate and sleep and let it idle overnight. reboot in the morning. consider not enabling automatic updates- only enable automatic notifications. that may fix your issue. later updates are alot less resource intensive.

on the same topic i think this sorta applies to win 8.1 on any machine, and gets worse as you install more windows updates....if you had your 8.1 machine for a while, and have installed many windows updates, try doing a "disk cleanup" on the os drive, and try to cleanup windows update files within that cleanup tool...on my gt72 with 512 gb crucial m.2 it took me more than 15 mins to complete the windows update cleanup with cpu at 40-50% load the whole time. i never expected windows update to load the cpu like that, but apparently thats how windows update works now.

    Hi guys!
I'm really undecided between this two models:

    MSI GT72-2QD
MSI GT72-2QD8H11B Gaming Notebook mit GTX970M 8GB RAM 128GB SSD (MSI Notebooks) günstig kaufen im Online-Shop von comtech.de

    ASUS ROG G751JT
ASUS ROG G751JT-T7005H Gaming Notebook mit i7 GTX970 256GB SSD und FHD Display (Asus Notebooks) günstig kaufen im Online-Shop von comtech.de

What do you think? I never have a gaming notebook so my judjment isn't clear. I don't know overall quality, dissipation..
    Pro to me:
    Asus 16gb ram(vs 8gb MSI); 256gb ssd raid(vs 128gb MSI); blu-ray

MSI GTX 970m 6gb (vs 3gb asus); TN screen panel; 6 usb 3.0 (vs 4usb asus)

    Help, please.

    Hey everyone :hi2:

been lurking around here for a while now.....finally bit the bullet and ordered a GT72 Dominator Pro (and joined the forum, lol). Not much choice available in the UK (damn import fees) but I've gone for the i7-4710HQ, 16Gb RAM, 980m 8Gb.

Should be a slight upgrade from my current 10-yr old Toshiba Satellite...Pentium 4, 1Gb Ram, Integrated mobility Radeon, 80Gb HDD. :D :D

If you already own a GT72 without the IPS screen then think about a 27" 4K IPS external monitor for $503.99 from Dell

Normally $699.99 - but using BOTH codes: $FHX1NQQR7ZG17 and CTCBFMG8$BF92F brings it to $503.99 with FREE shipping.

Can anyone tell me if the vBios on the GT72 has optimus disabled? Or does it not have to be disabled since the GT72 doesn't use Optimus anyways by design.

Just asking because I have a GT72 970m vBios that I want to flash to my Clevo card.

No everything has been playing nice and getting great performance. Using OSD shows clocks stay stable at full turbo boost the entire game and temps are super low. Haven't had anything weird going on. But I would like to not have to install using modded inf drivers.

I think ill take your warning and hold off for a bit on flashing he card with those MSI vBios. Unless I can always flash back after a bad flash? Will the laptop boot using the Intel graphics and allow me to re flash the clevo vBios?

Haha, reminds me of the "Redbull doesn't give you wings" class action that was just recently settled. I think if you bought a redbull drink in the last few years and thought it gave you wings, you're entitled to something like 10 bucks lol. You might end up on the NSA's list of mentally handicapped people if you do file a claim though.

The Optimus is not in the VBIOS but in the HW design & system BIOS.
GT72 has dedicated discreet GPU mode that you can activate by pressing the button.

Hello everyone! I'm looking to buy one of these laptops, and I had three questions that I couldn't find on google:
Will the GPU be upgradable to the upcoming 1000 series in 2016? I am wondering because these are based on the maxwell architecture as well.
And secondly; I heard the i7 4710HQ bottlenecks the 980m, is this true?
And finally; What difference does the crystal LCD make?

    Thank you for your time!
